fliRting tiPs!

talK

Not sure if she’s interested in you? Want to find out if he’s giving you the eye or the cold shoulder? Mayhem! explains it all with this sex and body language guide to reading the signals…

leGs, toes anD hanDs an eye for an eye It’s the number one basic rule of fl irting, eye contact. Many women fi nd people who shift their eyes, off putting. Holding a gaze is sexual and oozes confidence from both parties. Women often look down and blush after a compliment but will reunite the stare if she likes you. Just remember, it’s often considered rude if you look away when you’re talking to them. 10 MayHeM! | SUMMER 2014

If a person’s shoes or feet are pointed towards you it’s a sign of openness and interest. Studies have shown that those people who sit crossed legged with knees and legs pointing towards a person they like demonstrates that they want a closer relationship. Men are found to fiddle with spherical objects when fl irting which subconsciously remind them of a woman’s breasts. When a woman is fl irting she will keep her wrists and palms in full view of her love interest.

face off the liGhtest of touches Women are often put off by men touching them. Golden rules with fl irting must include both males and females avoiding the cheeky bum pinch. However, it’s often more inviting when men put a gentle hand on the shoulder or take a girl by the elbow. Men respond well if a female brushes her hand on his skin playfully.

Men and women both touch their face a lot if they like what they see. It’s particularly evident with the lips, which women often use as a seductive tool, helping draw their interest’s eyes to their mouth. Lips also become ultra sensitive to stimulation, and if you have a drink in your hand you will subconsciously be taking more sips. Be careful though, this can sometimes be a sign of nerves. Now go forth and find love.

Whatever else you drink, balance it up with enough water – your body and skin will thank you for it and it will help reduce the hangovers! If you don’t want to bother with make up, get eyelashes tinted before you go, apply a decent facial fake tan (don’t forget SPF though as well) and just slick on some lip gloss or tinted balm. A face spritzer is good for hydrating the skin. To stay smelling good, as well as a decent deodorant, pack a scented body spray – plus it can double up as a handy air freshener for the toilets! A dry spray in shampoo like Batiste will help keep greasy locks at bay when you can’t wash your hair. If you get completely desperate then tie it up, wrap a scarf round it and pretend it’s a style statement! Don’t expect to look like the photos of celebrities at festivals – very few of them are likely to actually be camping unless it’s in a VIP tent!

We’Re all GoinG on a

summer holiDay A bit of summer sun is always nice, especially with the weather in the UK being so unpredictable. Mayhem! is here with a few summer suggestions, for those looking to get away.

city BreaKs

Beach BreaKs

culture BreaKs

Would you rather enjoy the hustle and bustle of a metropolitan community this summer? Then why not try Berlin and enjoy the hospitality and vibrant atmosphere that one of Germany’s most up-and-coming locations has to offer.

With miles of golden sand and crystal clear waters, Riviera Maya on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula coast will give you that relaxing summer atmosphere every-time you visit. Sit back and sip cocktails on the tropical, white sand beach, or enjoy the underwater scenery with a tropical scuba dive.

For a cultured summer break, Venice could be for you. With its unique layout and rich history, you can take a break with friends, or go for a romantic getaway this year. As a city surrounded by water, the roads are replaced by canals, so the best way to explore is on foot and by boat.

For the ultimate in relaxation, take an all-inclusive trip to Lanzarote. A short fl ight over to this volcanic island and you’ll immediately feel the intense rays of the African sun beating down on your shoulders.

You can visit the Main Canal, one of the most busy and popular water thoroughfares, and marvel at the stunning Renaissance palaces that line the watery streets. For the more adventurous, visit the back streets and search for hidden treasures.

Visit the Topography of Terror and see the site of the Secret Police from during the World Wars, or take a relaxed stroll through the beautiful surroundings of the Tiergarten, which provides a contrast with the urban sprawl of Berlin’s centre. Not for the faint hearted, you can always try to gain entry to the world-renowned club of Berghain. Sweet-talking the bouncers will not work, but if you look the part and want to experience another world of clubbing, then this is the location for you.

The resort of Timanfaya (part of the H10 chain) offers an adults-only, all-inclusive package that brings a sense of calm and relaxation as soon as you arrive. Sip your complimentary glass of champagne, and kick back while enjoying a view of the sea, right from your sun lounger.

From trinkets to mid-priced boutiques in the Mercerie street; or window shop at the designer stores Calle Larga XXII Marzo just west of the Piazza San Marco. However, Venice is famed for its local crafts, so be sure to check out the smaller, independent shops.

Wherever you go, be sure to look for deals on hotels and flights. Going on a late summer break can be a lot less expensive if you shop around, and find the right deal for you. It’s the perfect way to escape the monotony of everyday life, and give you a well deserved break from your daily routine. 14 MayHeM! | SUMMER 2014

Most of us want to prolong the life of our hair – it’s our very frienDly ProDucts own unique fashion accessory – so how can we ensure Sometimes dry, brittle hair is more that we keep our crowning glory for years to come? related to the products you use.

Gone TomoRRoW eliminate hair DamaGe

aGeinG anD the environment

The good news is that some of the most basic causes of hair damage can be uprooted. It’s been witnessed that dramatic shedding can be result of stress, while other cases of hair thinning include alopecia areata – a patchy thinning caused by an immune-system imbalance. Chemical processing of your hair or even anything that pulls it like rollers, ponytails, weaves or braids could also be detrimental. Avoid the inevitable by treating your hair with love.

Our harsh environment and the fact that we’re physically ageing all contribute to our hair becoming more fragile and less shiny. Myoxin is a great ingredient to strengthen existing hair and make it look fuller. Our oil glands shrink as we age which changes the way our hair looks. For younger people oil travels down the hair follicle and naturally coats the hair, but if you’re older you don’t produce as much oil, leaving your hair much drier. To remedy this, Argan oil is incredibly hydrating and can be found in a number of hair products.

Hair that is repeatedly treated with chemicals (bleaches, hair straighteners, permanent dyes) can become stiff, dry and prone to breakage. Give your strands some love by ditching these harsh chemicals and using protein-rich hair treatments instead: protein fortifies the hair shaft. It’s been proven that protein can actually help repair damaged ends. An alternative is to take a hair vitamin with biotin and silica. Dermatologists also highlight that water is highly dulling and drying to hair. Try to protect your hair by wearing a cap (an age-old habit) under the shower or applying a protector on your hair if you don’t shampoo every day.

heat stylinG Be aware that professional-grade heat-styling tools can cause a lot of damage to your hair and wet-to-dryhair straightening irons also wreak havoc. Limit use of these tools to no more than three times a week and make sure that when you use them you shield your strands with a heat-protectant spray and supplement with weekly deep-conditioning treatments. High heat and aggressive hairstyling techniques will strip the hair of natural oil. UV rays should also be avoided as they can strip your hair of it’s moisture, shine, and pigment. Length, style and colour are the ingredients to achieving the look you want. Love your hair and hopefully it’ll hang around for longer.

BRing life to youR HoMe It can be hard to bring a new lease of life to a smaller house or flat, but growing your own plants and vegetables indoors can add a much needed splash of colour. You don’t need acres of land, or even your own outdoor space to enjoy the colours and fragrances that you can bring to your home. With a few small pots and some imagination you can bring a new lease of life to unused window sills and rooms.

herBs for flavour Herbs are easy to care for, and if you enjoy cooking, they can bring a great sense of achievement when used. Not only have you created a luscious culinary dish, but the ingredients have been cared for and tended by your own hands. Something you’ve grown will always taste better than something packaged and bought from the shop. They come in a variety of species, with the most common including rosemary, thyme, coriander, chives and basil. Remember though, they can be more delicate than normal flowering plants, as some may originally come from Mediterranean climates.

cacti for style

inDooR GarDeninG what can i Grow? flowers for colour That depends on what you would prefer. You can have cacti, herbs or smaller flowering plants, dependent on what space you have available. Sometimes it’s a good idea to remember that even though you want to don your green-fi ngered gloves, you have to cater for the needs of the plants fi rst. 18 MayHeM! | SUMMER 2014

Some need direct sunlight, while others need partial shade throughout the day. Some plants – once fully grown and flowering – can take up more space than you originally imagined. Always check the instructions on seeds to fi nd out how best to care for your plants.

If you’re still not sure on whether you can fully commit to nurturing more common flowering plants, then you can always consider cacti or succulent plants. They’re easy to tend, and certain species – including the Christmas Cactus with its pink flowers, or the Easter Cactus with its red blooms – bring a splash of colour to your current interior décor.

taKinG care of your Plants Each plant needs its own special food, much like animals or people. Certain types of plant have specific composts and soils that contain the essential nutrients they need to live to their fullest potential. Always check the flowering instructions before planting, it will save you time in the long-run if your plants can eat what they need, when they need it. All indoor plants are easy to look after if you take the time and care they deserve. There are so many varieties that can turn your empty window sill into a beautiful version of an outdoor flower bed.

all Round funny guy!

interVieW by Hayley sMitH

The manY faCes of

simon BroDKin Medical Doctor turned comedian Simon Brodkin chats following his recent gig at The Spring in Havant, as alter ego Lee Nelson...

What are the perks of having so many alter egos? I never get bored or recognised! What advice would you give to aspiring comedians? Practice makes prefect. And never mock the justice system. Google it. You have a popular TV show for BBC3 – Lee Nelson’s Well Good Show. How did this come about? Show Basically by being funny at the Edinburgh Festival.

How do you describe yourself? Professional funny man and all round great guy. When did you realise that you were good at impersonating other people? I used to jump the queues and get me and my mates into night clubs for free by pretending to the bouncers I was from Spain and had flown over especially for this night. Your many alter egos including Lee Nelson, Jason Bent, Gary Sedgemore and Chugger. Who is your favourite? I honestly don’t have a favourite, all the characters allow me to act like a complete idiot just in different ways. Who do you think people like most? Lee Nelson has a lot of love coming his way – three TV series and three big tours. And Premier League footballer Jason Bent has defi nitely connected with football fans. 20 MayHeM! | SUMMER 2014

Talk us through the way you develop your characters… By people watching. Then writing. Then re-writing. Then tearing up that writing, Then watching some new people.

How much censoring goes on before the shows can be aired? Not that much, it’s on BBC Three! What do you like to do when you’re not making an audience laugh? A lot of origami. You’re currently touring the UK, selling out London’s IndigO2. What’s been the standout show so far? Cheesy answer but every date has it’s own standout moments. That and I can’t remember the difference between most of them. Do you ever get noticed in public as Simon Brodkin or are you only recognised as the characters? Always as a character, I’m not sure anyone actually knows my real name. Have you always been funny? Pretty much. Aged 0–3 were tough years but after that the laughs kept coming. Who influences your work? Any comic who can create and inhabit a fully-rounded and recognizable character. They’re my inspiration for going pro. What’s next for Simon Brodkin? At the moment the focus is fully on Jason Bent, with a new TV show.

Picnic

Pick your favourite veggies to eat raw and cut into dippers. Carrots are always good, but be creative! You can use radishes, cucumber, celery ... even cauliflower and asparagus.

This salad alternative is great to prepare in advance, it will keep well and the flavour will have time to infuse. Roast some vegetables in a preheated oven for an hour or so with some olive oil and seasoning; think butternut squash, aubergine, courgette, peppers and red onion. Meanwhile, pour enough stock to cover your couscous into a bowl and leave covered with a tea towel until absorbed. Sprinkle some curry powder and fluff up with a fork. Mix your roasted veg into the couscous and set aside in a container. Use an old jam jar to prepare your dressing ready to pour before eating. Incorporate the juice of two lemons, olive oil and a teaspoon of harissa paste (available at most Mediterranean shops). If you’re not keen on spice just replace with a basic vinaigrette.

With the excitement of summer it’s the perfect time to start enjoying the beautiful outdoors. So what better time to find your beloved chequered blanket and start planning your next weekend picnic adventure? Picnics are about having fun with friends and family while enjoying the outdoors with fresh homemade treats, so don’t give in to the temptation of supermarket deals and set out to have fun preparing your own tasty treats for the day. Mayhem! is here with a few ideas that should help you keep organised. 22 MayHeM! | SUMMER 2014

Once cooked, squeeze the flesh into a food processor along with one tin of white pinto or butter beans, the juice of one lemon, a drizzle of olive oil, salt and a teaspoon of paprika. Don’t be scared of the amount of garlic; when roasted it becomes sweet and nutty. Blitz until smooth and season to taste.

For a fresh sweet treat, layer Greek yoghurt with fresh berries and granola into plastic cups. You can cover these with cling fi lm and chill in your fridge. These tips should have you covered and are all manageable in one productive morning, so get preparing! Put some mint sprigs and chopped orange in plastic bottles and freeze, fi ll your basket with plastic cups, napkins, cutlery, a small picnic knife and fresh baguettes, and set out to enjoy the sunshine!

It might not have taken much for Louis Armstrong to go on at length about what a wonderful world we live in, but he didn’t quite mean it in the context we at Mayhem! quite often rhapsodise over. Being a sentimental bunch and keen on travel (it broadens the mind, you know), we’ve decided that it’s high time we set off to explore the wonders you just can’t convey with the aid of a trumpet alone. Pack a bag and get ready to have your mind blown as we cross time itself in pursuit of truly awe-inspiring destinations!

ancient worlD Logic dictates that we should start with the oldest recorded similar list to our own – the Seven Wonders Of The World (now known as the Seven Wonders Of The Ancient World to minimise confusion). As it was made by Greeks – credit in particular going to the scholars Herotodus and 26 MayHeM! | SUMMER 2014

Callimachus – it won’t surprise you to learn that at the time they were in control of much of the known world and the list reflects a number of places their armies had conquered. Which of the no doubt many wonders they’d seen at fi rst hand made the cut? Let’s fi nd out! Bear in mind that their world-view then

comprised only the Mediterranean and Middle East regions. No surprises then when we tell you that fi rst on the list is the Great Pyramid of Giza (the only surviving Wonder on the list, built as a tomb for the Pharaoh Khufu in 2560 BC). That’s followed by the Hanging Gardens of Babylon (in modern-day Iraq), the Temple of Artemis (Greece), the statue Of Zeus at Olympia (Greece again), the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus (modern-day Turkey), the Colossus of Rhodes (a hat-trick for Greece) and fi nally the Lighthouse of Alexandria (Egypt – ordered to be built by the later Pharaoh Ptolemy). Of course you can still visit Giza – the other Wonders long since gone. But there are other lists forged in a similar spirit of adventure. Onwards and upwards it is then!

A sort of Greatest Hits tour, if you will! Lets take a look at some, with no threat that they might be ravaged any time soon. Of course there’s Stonehenge, the Roman Colosseum (the largest amphitheatre of the entire Roman Empire), the Great Wall of China (visible from space and built to keep invaders out of Qin Dynasty China) just for starters.

Holiday essentials

Going on safari can be an incredible experience – but before you head off into the wilderness make sure you’ve got all the essentials to ensure an unforgettable trip, Mayhem! is here with a few top tips!

Written by eMMa RoBeRts & cHantelle Wyatt

Batteries anD memory carDs walKinG Boots Safaris are not the place for flimsy flip-flops or fashion friendly footwear. The long days exploring and the uneven ground need to be faced head on with comfortable shoes or boots that will last your entire trip.

safari suit! Well, not an actual safari suit, but light, breathable fabrics for hot weather that are neutral in colour. Bring a sweater for the early morning starts when the air is much cooler.

camera A safari will almost guarantee unforgettable moments but having a good zoom on your camera is essential for great pics! The wildlife is often some distance away so a good zoom lens will ensure happy snapping from the safety of your vehicle. 28 MayHeM! | SUMMER 2014

Don’t underestimate the number of photos you’ll take on safari; you don’t want to run out of memory or battery power just as you’re lining up your next masterpiece.

Binoculars Overlooked and often left at home, binoculars are a great way to enhance your experience by getting up close and personal with animals.

GuiDe BooK Guide books are a great way to learn about the things you’ll see in more detail. Be sure to get guide books that are specific to the country/parks that you’ll be travelling to.

first aiD Kit It’s always better to be on the safe side. New surroundings, different foods and higher temperatures don’t always agree with us, so be sure include medication for all eventualities.

insect rePellent It goes without saying that insect repellent is a must have essential for exploring the world, bug-free! To avoid all the itching, scratching and unattractive bite marks, be prepared.

sun Protection It can get very hot out there especially in the dry season. Bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen (SPF 30) and lip protection.

water Very important! Make sure you have plenty to drink, especially in the heat – and it’s good for washing off the safari dust as well.

hyGiene There are no toilets in the great outdoors, so be prepared with your own toilet paper and hand sanitser. Essential before eating and after toilet breaks. Create great memories that you will never forget and do it in comfort.

The CompliCaTions of

PoPulation! The 11th of July is World Population Day. When we last took a head count it was estimated at 7.2 billion people. If you borrowed just one pound from everyone on the planet, you’d be very rich! PoPulation Decimation At no point in human history has there been a more catastrophic population implosion than the one caused by the Bubonic Plague, or by its more informative name, the Black Death. It did exactly what it says on the tin, a grizzly way to go for sure. During its peak in 1350, it had wiped out as many as 200 million people, that was almost half of the worlds population at the time.

animal maDness We share the planet with plenty of weird and wonderful creatures, there are actually 8.7 million different species of animal. The number of individual animals is impossible to tell, but it’s probably in the gazillions! It’s estimated that there are at least fifteen mice to every one person on the planet, you might want to tuck your trousers into your socks from now on.

say what? GrowinG Pains

seriously Dense

Counting upwards from the dawn of time to the 19th Century, the human race maxed out at a population of around 1 billion people. It’s only taken us the last 200 years to add another 6.2 billion to that number. At the current growth rate population would double every 40 years reaching an eye bulging 24 billion in 80 years time! Even more crowded than a Where’s Wally picture.

Singapore takes the gold when it comes to population density. With only 5.4 million residents it doesn’t sound like it would be more crowded than the UK, which is home to 63 million. However, you can fit Singapore into the UK an astonishing 344 times over, and that would be the equivalent of 1.8 billion people living on the British Isles. Just imagine the supermarket queues!

30 MayHeM! | SUMMER 2014

The most commonly spoken language in the world is Mandarin Chinese, which is hardly surprising when you think that China has a population of 1.8 billion. Second on the list is Spanish, followed by English in third. A lot of Spanish speakers can speak English as a second tongue, a lot of English speakers just point at what they want and say it a little louder! To see a real time population clock, head over to worldometers.info.

conserve our Planet

trees produce oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide and help clean our air and soil. Without trees humans would not exist. Give something back and plant a tree in your back garden.

recharGe instead of buying lots of conventional batteries, switch to rechargeables and you will save the planet from a lot of hazardous waste.

Bottle it!

DisPose eat local

use cloth

instead of driving, try walking, taking the bus or riding your bike. For every four-mile trip you avoid taking in the car, you can prevent approximately 15 pounds of pollution from entering our atmosphere.

Organically grown food may be healthy, but the environmental damage caused by transporting food long distances leaves a large and unnecessary carbon footprint. Studies show that a regional diet consumes 17 times less fossil fuels than a typical diet. try shopping at your local farmers’ market for fresh, in-season goodies. Or better yet, plant some veggies of your own.

clean Green

Get e-frienDly

Many cleaning products contain harsh chemicals that aren’t good for you or the planet. Did you know that baking soda, vinegar and lemon juice can be just as effective?

Lots of companies have an online option for paying bills which reduces paper waste. if every household in the UK paid bills online, we could save 18 million trees each year.

Did you know that for every minute you spend in the shower, you use five gallons of water? reduce your water usage by turning off the tap while you brush your teeth and shortening your daily shower.

Get active

next time you buy an electrical appliance make sure it has the energy Star label. these products can reduce the amount of energy you consume.

Plant a tree

Our planet is overcrowded and with ever an expanding population it’s important we take care in conserving what we have, not only for us now, but for generations to follow. Join Mayhem! in our quest to make the world a better place.

it takes more than 17 million gallons of oil each year to produce bottled water. that’s enough oil to fuel a million cars for an entire year. instal a filter on your tap at home and buy a reusable drinking bottle to carry with you.

Be efficient

instead of using paper napkins and towels, try cloth instead. it’s gentler on the environment and on your grocery budget too!

Power Down it’s hard to believe, but lighting alone comprises 5–10 percent of total energy use. Save energy by turning off lights when you leave a room.

save water

Sure, disposable packaging makes life easier in the short run, but it creates lots of unnecessary waste. buy reusable bags and containers to carry your lunch, groceries and other daily items.

Get creative before you throw anything away, think about how it could be used again. Old t-shirts make great cleaning rags. Cereal boxes and egg cartons can be turned into arts and crafts supplies. Fill your empty jars with rice or grains. Old cards can be transformed into gift tags. the possibilities are endless! Do your bit and make a change for a greener, healthier planet.

for BloKes

We all know who’ll end up hogging the tongs this summer! It’s time to start thinking about the delicate subject of the barbecues, so for the perfect steak, fellas, listen up!

Sorry lads, that comes later. it’s the question of gas or charcoal? For big events gas is the best option. this allows you to cook all day and keep food flowing with no time wasted waiting for coals to heat up. For old traditionalists however nothing beats charcoal. the smoke produced adds unbeatable flavour to food. try adding a few sprigs of fresh thyme, rosemary or even fruit wood chips on the coals for added ‘cheffy’ kudos.

Perfectly cooKeD meat this can take some mastering but simply put, don’t overcook beef or lamb and make sure poultry and burgers are cooked through. An internal temperature of at least 75 degrees is recommended, so a meat probe is a wise investment. be sure to keep cooked and raw meat apart too.

temPerature A hot bbQ should produce a medium-rare steak in just two minutes each side (depending on thickness). if you’re unsure about chicken and bangers you can cheat by starting them off in the oven. Decent quality meat is important as cheap cuts and economy products contain loads of fat and risk turning your bbQ into an inferno. Making your own basic burgers out of lean mince and onion is a doddle and you can add whatever seasonings you fancy – try coriander, ginger and chilli.

marinaDes Marinades are a must to avoid boring, bland food as well as keeping everything moist and tender. A homemade sauce will score added brownie points but if in doubt or short on time olive oil, lemon and salt is an easy and winning combination. be sure to take meat out of the fridge around an hour before cooking or the result will be the dreaded ‘raw and pink inside, cremated and black on the outside’ effect. rest your creations after cooking – chefs do this regularly to ensure the meat reabsorbs all the juices that would otherwise be lost.

veGetarians Make sure all guests feel catered for. Skewered chunks of peppers, mushrooms, aubergine etc, drizzled with olive oil brushed on with sprigs of rosemary show a bit more thought than just a token pack of veggie burgers. Oiled slices of Halloumi cheese can go straight on the grill too. Use a separate area away from the meat and different tongs to handle your veggie fare in addition. Now you’re ready to crack a beer and don that Hawaiian shirt safe in the knowledge your food will taste great. 34 MayHeM! | SUMMER 2014

Brush

uP! Cleaning your teeth is just part of your regular routine, but follow Mayhem!’s helpful guide and you’ll be able to flash your smile with pride and keep the dentist at bay!

Pearly whites Dentists, Diseases anD Dentures! Did you know teeth cleaning is thought to be as old as 5000 BC! The Egyptians are thought to have cleaned their teeth with twigs and leaves. Thankfully times have changed, and we now have toothbrushes, fluoride toothpaste, mouthwash, toothpicks and dental floss. It’s important to choose a toothbrush that suits you, either electric or manual, as long as you use it correctly it doesn’t matter, but make sure it has round bristles of different sizes and is either medium or soft . Pick a toothpaste that does what you need, whether it’s for sensitive teeth, whitening, protecting enamel or child friendly. Shop around, you’re sure to fi nd one that suits your needs! 36 MayHeM! | SUMMER 2014

A common misconception is that dirty stains and yellow teeth can be brushed away with vigorous force. Stop! By brushing hard you’re likely to push your gums up and expose nerve endings which could lead to gum disease. Brush gently twice a day with whitening toothpaste and visit the hygienist to banish those grubby marks often caused by tea, coffee, wine and cigarettes. Drink acidic juices through a straw to avoid enamel erosion and pop some chewing gum in your mouth after eating anything that may stain.

Get a routine! Your teeth cleaning habits are just that, a habit. Did you know that many people only brush their teeth once a day and end their routine there? Studies have shown that it’s far better to brush your teeth twice a day for three minutes each time.

Do you floss? A whopping 70% of us don’t bother, but flossing can help to remove missed plaque and food remains. Simply run a length of floss between each tooth to remove the bits your brushing missed. Remember to use a mouthwash afterwards to help keep your breath fresh and fluoride present. If you fi nd that mouthwash leaves you with a dry, stinging mouth, try an alcohol free one.

nothinG But the tooth! Make sure you visit your dentist every six months and book an appointment to see the hygienist too. Many people think they only need to visit the dentist when there’s problem. Not all mouth issues will arise in discomfort or pain, so your dentist can spot them and help advise on prevention and cures.

tRuffle sHuffle! Alarm bells should be ringing, particularly in the Midlands – said to be top of the country’s Premier League when it comes to such matters. Tamworth in Staffordshire is believed to be the biggest contributor to that fact, with a 30.7% obesity rate. But how have things got this way?

Written by cHRis MoRley

Popular opinion would suggest that unhealthy diets and a lack of physical exercise are to blame. But before you join the angry mob, there’s a dissenting voice! It belongs to Professor Jimmy Bell of London’s Imperial College (an obesity specialist) and he says “We’re being bombarded by the food industry to consume more and more food. It’s a war between our bodies and the demands our body makes, and the accessibility that modern society gives. And as a scientist I feel really depressed, because we are losing the war against obesity.”

fat chance Surely everybody knows life’s two golden rules – never get old and never get fat – but obesity is rapidly becoming a big problem, no pun intended! Put down that pie read on… 38 MayHeM! | SUMMER 2014

a BiG ProBlem Health professionals in both the UK and US have long fretted over the many problems associated with carrying more than a little excess weight. A study undertaken in 2012 estimated that by 2020 – six years from now – one third of our nation’s population could be obese. As it stands the rate of adult obesity has nearly quadrupled in the last 25 years alone.

Of course in some cases it’s a genetic or medical factor that helps weight gain proceed – think of diabetes, as an example of a health concern that can hinder attempts at losing a few pounds. Medically speaking, treatment courses such as anti-depressants can also inhibit shedding some excess fat.

slim oDDs That said, it really isn’t difficult once you put your mind to it. Take a look at the National Obesity Forum for a comprehensive walk-through of the latest advice and guidance from Britain’s top fat fighting-minded medics. Even the men from Westminster have mucked in, with Prime Minister David Cameron supporting the idea of a ‘fat tax’ as a possible solution. With an eye on the younger generation the Department for Education and Skills also established the Children’s Food Trust (formerly known as the School Food Trust), injecting £60 million into ensuring kids get the chance to explore healthier options than mere chips or Turkey Twizzlers. Take a look at childrensfoodtrust.org.uk and you’ll see they might never have had it so good, to paraphrase Harold Macmillan. So, exercise, eat right and the weight will simply fall off without you noticing – good luck!

All you need is determination to conquer the summer seas, and the ability to swim. The Portsmouth Water Centre has expert instructors who can help – not only will they be able to teach you the basics, but if you’re a seasoned sailor, they have more advanced courses available.

One of the fastest growing watersports in the world, stand up paddle boarding is an ideal way to get more exercise, but still enjoy the great British outdoors.

40 MayHeM! | SUMMER 2014

For the more adventurous thrill seekers, you could spend the warm summer days giving cable wakeboarding a try. Southcoast H20 in Hilsea is an ideal place to try your hand at this strenuous yet adrenaline-fueled water sport. There are areas for all levels of experience, from beginners to seasoned pros. For the beginners it’s the best way to learn, hands down. With accurate speed control, constant supervision and coaching you’ll be up and riding within a matter of minutes. With the high pull, one-on-one instruction and perfect speed control by the operator, you can’t fail to get on your feet and it’s the safest way to learn.

Going to the gym during the summer months can be a soul destroying process, especially if you’re missing the much-loved sunshine. Have you ever thought about what summer water sports you could be enjoying instead?

Sailing can be strenuous but it’s perfect for those seeking a new challenge while making the most of the sunshine. If you fancy giving sailing a go, all you have to bring is a sense of fun and adventure, all equipment is provided, including buoyancy aids to keep you safe.

fliP, floP, fall

Imagine gliding smoothly through the water, without having to worry about ropes being twisted or whether your sail is catching the wind. SUP boarding can be as relaxing or as competitive as you like. Take part with your friends or once you’ve completed a short training course, head out into the harbour, solo. Just keep a keen eye out for boats and other SUP-ers.

For the more advanced wakeboarder, it’s the best place to learn and practice. The carrier is supported by two vertically parallel cables, allowing for greater tension and a smooth pull. The riders rope length can be changed very quickly meaning you can use a short line to learn new air tricks. Unlike full size cables you can take advantage of the 180 degree turns and learn new tricks on the corner. There is almost an infi nite amount of tricks to learn. The best thing is that when you crash it picks you straight back up and within a few seconds you can try again. Whatever your preference, you can fi nd plenty of water-sports that can keep you entertained and active during the summer months. The UK might not be renowned for its sunshine, but you can guarantee that when it does come out, taking a dip (intentional or otherwise) is one way to cool down.

MAYHEM! Meets…

Filmgoers may know him for slaying Orcs as Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit, or helping solve crimes as John Watson in Sherlock, but Freeman was already famous in the UK for playing Tim in The Office. More recently he’s starred as the downtrodden Lester Nygaard in the TV adaptation of Fargo, the Oscar-winning Coen Bros. classic. Freeman’s mild-mannered acting persona is ideally suited to playing the unlikely middle-class salesman turned criminal. “When we meet Lester, he’s a 40-year-old man who’s been pushed around for most of his life,” Freeman explains. “He’s in a loveless marriage. He’s henpecked, to say the least. He’s not brilliant at his job. He’s one of those people who life happens to. He gets a lot of life thrown at him, and he doesn’t deal with it very well.” Produced by the American F/X network and shot in the cold climate of Calgary, Alberta, the series co-stars Billy Bob Thornton as the low-life career criminal Lorne Malvo whose chance meeting with Nygaard sets in motion a series of grim events in the unsuspecting town of Fargo, Minnesota. It was precisely the ugly side of Lester Nygaard that appealed to Freeman who’s been trying to extend his range as an actor and distance himself from his perpetual “nice guy” image. What drew you to Fargo? The scenes with Billy Bob were so fantastically written, I kicked it around in my head and showed the script to my wife – she told me, “You gotta do it. It’s so good.”. I didn’t know anything beyond what was revealed in the script for the pilot episode, the rest of it was on trust and I was right to trust, because the rest of it has been fantastic. It’s one of the best-written projects I’ve ever done. I wasn’t interested in simply rehashing old territory. With Fargo, I feel we’re covering ground that hadn’t been covered in the fi lm and stands on its own. MAYHEMMAG |

Did you have similar fears when you were offered the role of Watson in Sherlock? Yes. Even with Sherlock, I wouldn’t have played it if I hadn’t felt that we were doing something unique. I thought it was very risky to try to update Sherlock Holmes but I was willing to discuss it. The problem was, the day I met the people who were doing Sherlock I was feeling stressed and irritable and I left the impression that I wasn’t that anxious to do it. But then I told my agent to call them back and tell them I was very interested. The next time I went in I read some scenes with Benedict which went very well and that’s when I saw that our rhythms were naturally suited to worked together. Were you also attracted to the idea of playing a darker figure given that you’re so well known for playing more timid and meek characters and you have this “Everyman” image? That was one of the major attractions of playing this role. You want to do different things and you want to challenge people’s perceptions of you, and you want to challenge your own work and your own perceptions of what it is you do. So, certainly the overt dark side of Lester was something very attractive to me. People certainly don’t associate me with being a sort of murderous killer!

“I was a little disappointed Billy Bob and I didn’t have more scenes together” nice to give yourself and the audience a reminder of just a different flavour. I believe that within one nonspeaking reaction shot you can play three different things. I’ve always liked to sort of do that, not to just play the one thing. I like to try and reflect the complexities of how we are in real life, which is we’re always thinking at least two things at the same time. Was the writer Noah Hawley determined to give the series the distinctive Coen Bros. tone that was so evident in the original Fargo film? I’m sure he was anxious to create a Coen-esque feeling which I imagine was a major reason the Coens gave their blessing to the series. I also appreciated how Noah added new elements which surprised me and will surprise audiences that distinguished the series from the film. Noah is very good at dark, and very good at ‘funny dark.’ He has characters do things where you’re always saying, ‘Wow, I didn’t see that one coming.’ It’s always nice to be surprised as a reader, knowing that you’re going to act it out – and as the viewer, seeing things that actually make you gasp.

Sometimes you believe your own reviews and you go, oh, maybe I am an “Everyman.” I think actually, no, that’s rubbish. I know I’m not. So, it’s

MAYHEM! Meets…

How bad a salesman and husband is Lester Nygaard? He’s a pretty decent person. I don’t think he’d go out of his way, short of what happened in Episode 1, to hurt anybody. He’d probably go out of his way to help people actually. But he’s a bad salesman, yeah. Clearly his sales technique is bad. He’s not good at his job. And he’s probably not a great husband, but part of that is because he’s allowed himself to be bullied. When people bully us, we’re complicit in it in some way. We do allow it to happen to some extent. And Lester has allowed it to happen. How does Billy Bob’s character, Lorne Malva, manage to inspire or otherwise manipulate Lester? Malvo is magnetic and everything that Lester is not. They talk, and he kind of switches a little lever in Lester’s mind. He seems to say, “You can look at your life in a different way, if you want.” That little bug just stays with Lester. It’s not immediate, and it’s not overnight, but it needles its way into him. Malvo is the catalyst for what follows in Lester’s world aggravated by the fact that Lester is having a bad day. I was a little disappointed Billy Bob and I didn’t have more scenes together, but the couple of scenes we did in the fi rst episode were two of my favourite days of work. I just loved working with him. 44 MayHeM! | SUMMER 2014

This is the first time in your career that you’re playing an American character. How did you approach playing a Minnesota native and how difficult was it for you to master the infamous Minnesota accent? Even some Minnesotans from the big city fi nd those accents funny but you have to be careful not to be condescending or patronising. You need to walk a fi ne line there and I was concerned about not taking comic liberties with the manner or the accent of the character. I was careful not to patronise these people whom even most Americans are probably unfamiliar with in terms of how they speak and interact. Is it exciting to playing a deceptively wicked character like Lester? I was fascinated by Lester’s transformation over the course of events. At first his actions are borne out of necessity. He develops a survivor’s mentality and is determined to fi nd a way to cover his tracks like a hunted or wounded animal. Then he learns to adapt to his survivalist skills and becomes much better at lying and manipulating and playing the game he needs to in order to survive. This is where I found so many interesting levels to Lester.

Was the fact that Fargo was written as a limited 10-episode series another element that attracted you as opposed to making a longer-term commitment? That was another big attraction. I knew that this was going to take up four or five months of my life rather than seven years. I like moving on, I like going on to the next thing. I like having something else to look forward to as well. Your career has been very successful, but you’ve often mentioned how you find it difficult adjusting to your fame? It’s not something I was ever seeking and of course I understand that it’s the nature of this business that with success comes recognition. It can be pleasant to have people acknowledge your work and express their appreciation but sometimes the attention can be difficult to bear and I admit I’m not that good at that sort of thing. I like having my little world to myself and for my friends and family.

Has playing Lester affected you in any way personally? I don’t know yet. I think a lot of the time you play parts or the things that you learn, you don’t quite know what they are until years later maybe. They sort of fi lter back into your work years later. I remember at drama school people saying this isn’t necessarily going to make sense to you now, but in five years the pin might drop or whatever. And that was true. I’m not quite sure what I’ll take away from this “Lester” year. I’m going to have to let it live with me for a bit and then I’ll probably get some perspective on it in a year. So, it will inform me in some way.

THE LION KING

facts • It took approximately 37,000 hours to build all the puppets and masks; which is over 1,542 days!

• There are 232 puppets in the show, including rod, shadow and full-sized puppets. Some of these were even inspired by Japanese Bunraku puppetry. • Mufasa’s mask weighs 11 ounces, Scar’s mask weighs seven ounces and Sarabi’s mask is just four ounces. The masks, along with many others used in the show, are extremely lightweight and are comprised of silicone rubber with carbon graphite overlay – the same durable material used to build airplanes. Over 750 pounds of silicone rubber were used to make the masks.

Disney’s award-winning production of The Lion King is coming to the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton from 11th July 2014. Playing for nine weeks as part of the show’s record-breaking tour of the UK and Ireland, giving you the opportunity to experience this global phenomenon. Four years in the making, this production brings together a cast of over 50 actors, singers and dancers, from 18 different countries, supported by a backstage team of over 100 people. The touring production is the biggest musical production ever to tour the UK. With hundreds of masks, puppets and more than 700 elaborate costumes representing 26 different types of animal, 23 giant trucks are used to transport everything across the country. Disney’s The Lion King is based on the beloved Academy award-winning animated fi lm which was entrusted to Director and Co-Designer Julie Taymor to adapt the fi lm for the stage. Taymor brought a vast array of disciplines to The Lion King which draws upon her immeasurable experience of various 46 MayHeM! | SUMMER 2014

theatrical styles and cultures to tell the compelling tale of Simba, the young lion cub, as he journeys through life and struggles to accept the responsibilities of adulthood and his destined role of King. The acclaimed stage adaptation of Disney’s 1994 film was first seen on Broadway in 1997, where it recently became the highest grossing show in Broadway history. The production has now been seen by over 70 million people across six continents and the acclaimed West End production continues to sell out at London’s Lyceum Theatre in its 15th triumphant year. The Lion king is playing from 11 July– 6th September 2014. For tickets call 02380 711811 or visit Mayflower.org.uk. For more information visit lionking.com.

• The tallest animals in the show are the four, 18-foot exotic giraffes. Two actors trained in stilt-walking, climb 6-foot ladders to fit inside the puppets, mount stilts and enter stage left to cross the stage. • Pumbaa the Warthog is the heaviest costume weighing in at 45 pounds. • The yearly upkeep and maintenance of the 20 Grasslands headdresses requires over 3,000 stalks of grass (roughly 60 pounds). • Worldwide, nearly 1,700 people are directly employed by The Lion King, including 20 whose sole mission is artistic upkeep of the show. • Lighting Designer Donald Holder used nearly 700 lighting instruments to create the show’s lighting plot. • The most complicated set piece is Pride Rock, which appears five times during each performance. In the non-touring productions Pride Rock rises 12’ high from below the stage and rotates in a circular motion. • The spiritual role of Rafiki is based on the Sangoma, the South African herbalist, healer and truth teller. They are almost always women, with the traditions being passed down from mother to daughter for generations. Their job is to interpret messages from the spirits and use herbs to heal and to divine the future.

Running from 12th–27th July, the Festival of British Archaeology is a chance to really get to grips with the building blocks of our great nation! the Past in the Present

Don’t worry, you won’t need a TARDIS either. Perhaps historian Dr Bettany Hughes puts it best when she says “Every time we walk through a street, across a field, down a country lane or hurtle along a motorway, the ghosts and fragments of the past are all around us. Archaeology is a brilliant way of understanding and appreciating this massively important connection.” “The Festival of Archaeology gets us even closer and celebrates Britain’s incredibly rich archaeological inheritance. There are a whole series of events organised across the country for everyone from budding archaeologists, and historians to those who just want to have fun learning more about the world we live in. ” Brought to you by the Council for British Archaeology, this year’s staging will be the 24th such event – a nationwide opportunity to get ‘hands on with history’ and celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Council’s founding.

If that doesn’t have you packing your trowel and heading on down to sign up as a member, the chance to help solve some of the mysteries that have lain waiting since the world was young just might.

If it’s a true passion you can even volunteer to join digs and see the professionals at work. We should warn you though – you won’t be finding the Ark of the Covenant and beating up Nazis every week! Unless that is a certain Dr Jones comes calling for you…

And if you’re 8–16 you can join the Young Archaeologists Club while you’re there; (www.archaeology festival.org.uk). Bring a torch now as we delve into one of the greatest such puzzlers on our own sceptred isle… we’re going to Stonehenge!

50 MayHeM! | SUMMER 2014

Presumably you already know that Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument. Or is it? Some theories suggest that it might have been a place of worship or even a sort of field hospital/burial ground. Regardless of which side of things you believe, it was built between 300–200 BC and remains a site of great spiritual importance to Druids. Druidry itself on these shores dates back to the beginning of the 18th Century as a continuation of the Romanticist movement, which was itself based around the Celtic cultures of Iron Age Britain – indeed, the title ‘Druid’ is a modern reference to the original title given to the priests of the Celtic faiths. Look deeper, though, and you’ll fi nd that the modern and ancient Druids have little in common other than a shared name. Both did and do still see/use Stonehenge as a focal point of their Summer and Winter Solstice ceremonies. To find out more take a look at the International Grand Lodge of Druidism (www.igld.org) and the Druid Network (www.druidnetwork.org). There’s also the small matter of Geoff rey of Monmouth, a cleric who helped to spread the popularity of Arthurian legend through his tome Historia Regum Britanniae (History of the Kings of Britain, for those with little knowledge of Latin). Where does the Henge come into all of this? Well, Geoff wrote a little story suggesting that Merlin himself may have helped in its construction… mysterious, no?

WelcoMe to tHe Jungle!

interVieW by cHRis MoRley & daniel tidBuRy

As these girls celebrate the release of their debut album, Welcome to the Jungle, Mayhem! chats exclusively to find out who’s who... Amira: tell us about the audition process and how you all came together… We were all scouted even though it was an audition process. Myself and Jess were found in London – I was shopping and Jess was waiting for her sister in Brick Lane. Shereen and Asami were found on YouTube. How did it feel in the early days – things must have started moving quickly? We had no idea how quickly things would progress but we were all ready for the hard work! It helped that we all got on from the get-go. Who decides on the style of music you’re creating? We all have equal input considering we all like different genres of music. 54 MayHeM! | SUMMER 2014

How did you come up with your name? It was a long process – so long that we even did shows without a name. Neon Jungle was the first one we all agreed on, but Jess originally came up with the idea. What’s the most exciting thing to happen so far? Performing in New York for Victoria’s Secret. Shereen: what are looking forward to this summer? I’m really looking forward to all the summer festivals we have coming up, especially T in the Park as it’s in Scotland! Where would you really love to perform? Everywhere we perform is a privilege but I think a stadium would be amazing!

Who is the worst for forgetting the words? We’re pretty good at not forgetting words. I think it helps we sing our own songs so we know the parts very well. Who causes the most arguments and what are they normally about? I’d say we all have our moments and it’s usually silly stuff like... who hasn’t cleaned the dishes! Jess: are you missing your friends, or do you get time to see them? I defi nitely miss my friends sometimes, however they all completely understand and support Neon Jungle and couldn’t be prouder. The time I do get off to see friends, we just make it extra special!

What’s the most fun? Performing, making videos, recording, photo shoots? Performing, making videos, recording and photo shoots in that order. Photo shoots are a lot of fun but it comes with the job. Performing on stage is where we’re in our element and nothing can compare to that. Who is your inspiration? My inspiration comes from all over the place. A lot of my inspiration comes from children though. I adore the carefreeness and the enthusiasm kids have for the things we all take for granted. I always want to be in tune with my inner child. Who would you love to perform with? To perform alongside the likes of Pharrell Williams, Drake, Rihanna, Beyoncé would be incredible!!!

adveRtise WitH us » 023 9229 4408

WelcoMe to tHe Jungle! Do you have a name for your fans? Our fans are Neons (like us) but our fan base is called ‘Ohana’. ‘Ohana’ means family, and family means no one gets left behind or forgotten. What are each other’s most annoying habits? Shereen is so heavy handed and clumsy – always breaking things. Asami and her farting! Amira is always losing and misplacing things. She’s got a memory like a fish. Who’s the best cook? I would like to nominate myself as I’ve had the most experience and cook a mean curry. However, Amira probably enjoys cooking the most. I will happily let her make me one of her seafood concoctions. Asami: who is the daredevil and why? I’d have to say we are all daredevils, it just depends what day you catch us on! But we all have a thrill for adventure and sort of egg each other on to do stuff ! If you weren’t pop stars, what would each of you be doing right now? I think we would still be singing but if singing wasn’t an option at all I’d say Shereen would probably be training to become a sports instructor. Amira would be dancing.

Jess would be acting or she’d be a really good TV presenter or radio host. I would be training to become a crab fisher-woman on a crab boat. I’m not joking! Who is the clean freak? Jess is defi nitely the clean freak – like she has OCD. She’ll be in bed and she might touch her phone or the bedside table and will have to get up and wash her hands. What is one unusual thing in your suitcase? It’s not so much unusual more so that I can’t travel without it, and that’s my stuffed chimpanzee called CC which stands for cheeky chimpanzee. I was five when I named him! If offered a drink – what is your tipple of choice? I’d defi nitely go for a Guinness or JD and coke. What’s your earliest musical memory? These weren’t the earliest songs I can remember but the ones that had the most impact when I fi rst heard them, they’d have to be White Flag by Dido and Razor by Foo Fighters. What’s next for Neon Jungle? Just continuing to grow as a group, travelling the world, getting our music out there, meeting new people but mostly enjoying ourselves and having fun!
