Set yourself a number of realistic goals, start small then build up. there will be work involved, remember you’re working towards your dream so it’ll be worth it in the end, stick with it and with realistic aims they’ll be less room for disappointment.

motivation and determination go hand in hand and neither will work without the other when it comes to achieving your dreams. you need to make sure you’re motivated to stay on track. Once you’ve found your motivation, next comes the determination to achieve it. the most important thing is not giving up, stay motivated and determined and the process will feel easier.

Lastly but probably most importantly, you need to embark on this mission to fulfi l your dreams for you and you alone. you shouldn’t be crumbling to the pressures of others or letting other people influence you too much. it’s great to have support from family and friends but ultimately you have to do it for yourself and you have to want to do it for you to be successful.

eat wHole Grain BreaD not all carbs are bad. and yes, whilst eating white bread will give you a temporary boost, it’s usually followed by a full on sluggish crash.

Wholegrain bread, on the other hand, is attributed to being able to give you a natural and longer lasting boost of energy. But look out – less is, indeed, more as regards wholegrain as eating too much of it can also trigger a surge of serotonin which can make you feel drowsy. Balance is the key here.

look aFter Your liPS As the poet Ben Jonson once wrote, “A soft lip would tempt you to an eternity of kissing,” but lips are actually one of the quickest parts of the body to suffer in cold weather.

Keep them in good condition by gently rubbing off any rough skin with a dry toothbrush or using a specific product like the Lush scrub. Many cheaper lip balms are petroleum based but we prefers to opt for products with more natural formulations based on beeswax or shea butter.

Don’t be tempted to apply bright lipstick to chapped lips – it will look awful! If yours aren’t in the best condition stick to a tinted lip balm until they recover.

Finally if you want your lippie to stay on as long as possible, a good tip is to apply a light covering of foundation and touch of powder to lips before outlining and filling in with a soft lip pencil.

Then apply two coats of lipstick on top, blotting with a tissue between applications. We can’t promise it will last through a vigorous snogging session but hopefully by that stage you won’t care!

tHe miXture the basics needed for a pancake mixture are flour, eggs and milk but too much or too little of these simple ingredients can be disastrous. BBC’s good Food website suggests 100g flour, two eggs and 300ml milk for eight easy pancakes. But, the guardian online says a little more flour, a little less milk and one egg for eight perfect pancakes.

Why not mix it up and try peanut butter pancakes? Just add six tablespoons of smooth peanut butter to the mixture and bake on a low heat to give a nutty surprise for dessert.

Or for something a little healthier just add either slices of apple or pumpkin to make fruity pancakes.

arounD tHe worlD oN PaNcaKe daY Whether you know it as Pancake Day, Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday, it’s that one day where, traditionally, households grab all the fat left in their cupboards and make delicious crepes or pancakes before Lent begins.

Whether you enjoy yours with sugar, chocolate, syrup or lemon, you usually consume more than you intended, but what do the rest of the world do on this day?

Fun PanCake FaCtS

• The world record for cooking the biggest pancake was in Yorkshire in 1994! The huge battery cake measured 15 metres in diameter and weighed three tons!

• The world’s best tosser was Ralf Laue from Germany who broke the world record in 1997 by tossing a pancake 416 times in two minutes!

• The word ‘shrove’ is not used in any other context. Its origins derive from the verb shrive which means absolution, basically, the consumption of luxury food!

• Auzzie chef, Andy Wrobel built the tallest pancake stack made from a tower of 60 pancakes, standing 29 inches high.

• Health and safety rules were pushed to the limit when Ripon’s historic Pancake Day race was scrapped two years ago. School children used to run down a cobbled street flipping pancakes following the ringing of the cathedral’s ancient ‘pancake bell’ at 11am. However, organisers cancelled the event following hefty policing costs.

Pancake Day in Denmark is celebrated on the last Sunday before Lent, rather than the traditional Tuesday. The day is called ‘Fastelavn’ and it’s customary to eat Danish buns.

The middle of these is removed and filled with whipped cream and jam. Children are encouraged to play ‘hit the cat out of the barrel’.

While in olden times this was literally as it is called whereby kids bashed a barrel with a bat while a live cat sat frightened inside, traditions have now changed to include sweets rather than a kitty.

The French celebrate Pancake Day as Mardi Gras, which translated means ‘Fat Tuesday’.

This name originates from the ancient custom of parading a fat ox through Paris to remind people they were not allowed to eat meat during Lent. A carnival is held and people disguise themselves and put on crazy masks. The festival lasts in Nice for 10 days, with daily parades, concerts, street theatre and giant masks. Breaking tradition, the main pancake day in France is Candlemas on 2nd February. This holy day is six weeks after Christmas and is the day that Christ was presented at the temple by his mother. Pancakes at this time must be tossed with a coin in the hand to ensure prosperity throughout the year.

SweDen Known as ‘Fettisdagen’ which translates to Fat Tuesday, the Swedish eat Semlors which, similarly to Denmark, are round buns with the centre removed, but this country fill theirs with marzipan and cream. The top of the bun is replaced and then sprinkled with icing sugar. Another tradition is to eat pea soup with pancakes. The Swedes approach the making and eating of these buns very seriously, and many newspapers hold competitions to find the best ones in town.

CanaDa The Canadians add things to their pancakes including, coins, nails, rings and buttons. Yes, that’s right; they place (clean) inedible goods into their battery cakes for lucky finders. Of course they have meanings, the one who discovers the coins will be rich, whoever chomps on the ring will be the first to marry, the finder of the nail will be destined to become a carpenter and buttons or thimbles in your crepe symbolise a new career as a seamstress or tailor. These unusual pancakes are served with syrup, partridge jam and…sausages! mayhemmag |

auStralia The Australians make and share pancakes on Shrove Tuesday.

They sell pancakes to raise money for charity and proceeds often go towards support for low-income families who are experiencing tough times. Pancake tossing races are also often held by neighbours and families. Australia now holds a Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, where international celebrities fly out to sing at the event. A parade is also held featuring elaborate costumes and dance music.

Brazil Known as ‘Fatty’ the Brazilians refrain from pancakes but go all out and celebrate with a carnival lasting for three whole days; ending on Shrove Tuesday. Due to the long deprivation of Lent, this country decided to hold meetings of various festivities marking enjoyment of pleasures. Large parties were held in previous times, where people ate, drank and enjoyed carnivals in streets, squares and houses. winter 2015 | MAYHeM!

How muCH SleeP SHoulD we HaVe? Ever felt the need to nod off during a quiet day at work or tedious lecture?

We’ve all been there. Late night, warm room, heavy eyes. Well guess what?

There’s now a designated day for all of us sleepy heads which encourages us to do just that – and then some!

Mayhem! stifles a yawn and investigates the wonders of sleep.

a DeSiGnateD SleePinG DaY?

Broadly speaking of course, sleep requirements vary from person to person and depend on a whole load of individual issues, including general health and lifestyle. however – and brace yourself if you’re a party animal – most healthy adults are reckoned to need between seven and a half to nine hours of sleep per night to function at their best the next day.

wow, tHat muCH?

get your diaries out. it’s on 13th march this year and has been introduced to encourage people to take a nap in a public place or even at work. you could settle down in the classroom, the office, on the train or even a shop. the world, for one day, is your mattress!

you’d better believe it. that means if you’re burning the candle at both ends and not getting to bed until near midnight, you should be away in the land of nod until at least 7:30am the following morning.

wHat’S tHe Point?

Don’t be macho about it – boasting about how little sleep you need might make you feel tough, but it’s not doing you any good. if you are averaging even less than eight hours a night then there’s a good chance you might be suffering from sleep deprivation. a big no-no.

Sleep is, even today, a subject cloaked in more than its fair share of mystery and contradiction. But one thing most sleep boffins agree on is that it’s hugely important to our overall health and well being. and most of us, it’s fair to say, don’t get enough of it.

So i’m a Bit SleePY – BiG Deal Listen. Sleep deprivation can be a very dangerous condition, one that can genuinely be harmful to your health. Far more than you having to stifle a few yawns in a meeting.

SuCH aS? For a start it affects your health and waistline. When people are short on sleep they often crave sugary foods that provide a quick energy boost. thus sleep deprivation can be linked to a poor diet and subsequent weight gain.

On a more sinister note, sleep deprivation has been linked with a third of all industrial accidents while ROSPa have commissioned independent studies on the increase in road accidents, many of them fatal, that have been attributed to driver fatigue caused by lack of sleep.

Most of us have experienced a nightmare where we’re on stage, in front of a huge audience, with no script, no cues, and absolutely no clue what we’re going to say next. What’s an unwelcome nocturnal stress for most people is a daily fact of life for Ross Noble. When Noble takes to the stage on tour he has no more of an idea what he’s going to say than the bloke in row Q. He just wings it. We catch up with Ross following his show at the Portsmouth Guildhall earlier this year.

the result is invariably a bizarre, ludicrous and hilarious tour of Noble’s cheerfully twisted psyche, as he lurches from one surreal flight of fancy to another. Noble live and in full flow is a force of nature, if nature had bonkers hair and an anarchic way of looking at life. in conversation, noble is a slightly quieter version of his stage presence, less prone to wandering off topic but still enthusiastic, engaging and funny. and, true to form, the interview takes in subjects as diverse as playing harold Bishop’s love interest… just another meander around the wonderful world that Ross noble inhabits, then.

With tickets for your 15th tour, Tangentleman now on sale, what is it you enjoy most about touring? is it my 15th? i’ve no idea. it depends what you class as a tour. i started doing stand-up when i was 15, and now i’m 37. and i’ve pretty much been gigging relentlessly that whole time. it was 1999 when i stopped doing the comedy clubs and started touring on my own. But when you tour the UK and ireland, and then go off and do the rest of the world, and then go off to australia for six months, is that all one tour or not? i’ve just released my 9th DVD, and most of those have got a couple of different shows on them. i suppose i’m a bit like Bob Dylan, i’m just on one never-ending tour.

The second series of your show, Freewheeling, is coming back.

Freewheeling Viewers saw the first series take you all over the country on your motorbike, following suggestions from the public on Twitter. What were the oddest scenarios you found yourself in?

Probably the oddest, and my favourite, was when i went to investigate whether Lesley Joseph had been rude to a guy in a café in york. i tweeted “What celebrities have you seen, and where have you seen mayhemmag |

them?” and somebody tweeted and said Lesley Joseph had been in a café opposite where she worked and had been rude to someone in there, so i turned up there and heard the story. and obviously, legally, you have to be balanced, so i was sat there wearing the face of Lesley Joseph. that sounds massively sinister. i wasn’t wearing it in a Silence of the Lambs way. i got a tattoo artist to do a pencil drawing of Lesley Joseph’s face, and i was wearing it on my face… then she walked past the café, so i chased her down the street! that was just amazing.

In all your travels, do you have a favourite part of the country to visit? i love Scotland, i absolutely love it. you get the best of both worlds, you get great audiences, but then you get the most phenomenal scenery. We’ve got some of the most picturesque landscapes and countryside, but most people, certainly in the south, go “Meh! I can fly to Greece in the time it would take to get there.”

Do you have a favourite venue to play? Do you prefer the enormous ones, or the smaller more intimate gigs? that’s a tricky one. Obviously playing newcastle City hall is special, because that’s my home crowd. that’s the place where, when i was a kid, i looked at and went “Anyone who plays there has made it.” i always get a buzz off that. the older theatres that were designed by Frank matcham are perfect for comedy. it’s fun to do a thousand-seater theatre where it’s quite intimate, but when i’ve played

So, weirdly, you can do stuff that’s even more intimate because even the people at the back can see you close up. But then you’ve got that odd disconnect of the fact that people are essentially watching it on telly. On the other hand, once you start to get 10,000 plus people laughing, there’s a noise and an experience that becomes really exciting. On this tour, they’re all theatres, and i think that’s the best, because no-one’s having to watch you on a screen.

Do you think a sense of humour is like an accent, and they vary with regions? no. i think that may have been the case once, but not now. i think in the Variety theatres, the audiences in different places used to have a certain sense of humour. i think now you’re much more likely to get different crowds on different nights in the same venue, who have totally different senses of humour. if you’ve got a crowd in seeing Roy Chubby Brown one night, and eddie izzard the next, they will be totally different crowds. it’s more about the mindset of the people going to see the gig. People used to say glasgow audiences were really tough – i think some southern comedians might find it difficult. For me, i find the glasgow audiences are some of the best. they’re rowdy, they’re lively, they’re great fun.

Anyone who’s ever seen your work before knows it’s not exactly what you’d call structured. Is there any point in asking what people can expect from Tangentleman?

Meets… i think what i try and do is put on the show that i would want to see if i went to see somebody live. i like to keep it interesting for the audience, and i like to keep it interesting for myself. i’m naturally quite playful in the way i approach life, and that’s what i try to bring to the live shows.

What that means is your show is basically different every night.

Do you get people who come back again and again? yeah, some do. the way that i work, i go on stage and i improvise stuff.

Somebody might say something that will spark five or ten minutes or more of improv, and then out of that ten minutes, there might be one nugget of an idea that i like, which i’ll maybe expand and kick around the next night. the best way to describe it is some comedians write out lists of words, to remind them what to say, whereas my show is like taking a bucket full of cartoon characters and melting them, then taking that melted cartoon sludge, putting it in a water pistol, and firing it into the air.

With a scripted show, comics will often leave their best material to the end. Do you ever worry that you might finish on something that doesn’t work? that’s why my shows are so long.

“No, that’s not good enough to end on.

I’d better do another five minutes.”

“Is that good enough? No. Five more.”

But in terms of ending the show, i’ve probably started ten different stories, so i’ve got to try and get back to them to wrap them all up. So the problem i normally have is remembering all the things i’ve started.

Do you ever wake up in the middle of the night and think “I didn’t finish that bit…”

Oh, all the time! the great thing about twitter is that now people will just tweet me and go “You never finished talking about that thing…” Very often i’m in the hotel bar or a nandos or a petrol station the day after the gig, 22 MAYHeM! | winter 2015

and someone will come up and go “I was at the show last night. What was that you were going on about?”

You say your shows can be quite long. How do you know when to finish the show? Are you able to keep track of the time?

Because my tour manager is at the side of the stage tapping his watch, going “Come on, come on. You’ve had your fun.”

You get really involved with the audience. Do people ever come up with something that throws you? yeah, all the time, but that’s the fun of it. Sometimes stuff happens that you think would completely ruin the show. For example, i did one gig where the fire alarm went off. that could knacker the whole thing. the audience had to be evacuated. But i went outside and just continued doing the gig while everyone was standing around. and there was a little kid there, probably about 12, with the fire engines behind me, and got people to take pictures of me, so it looked like i was saving a child’s life. then we all went back in, and i came onstage and brought the fire brigade out with me like a chorus line, and we all took a bow. and i was thinking “The firemen will be loving that,” and one of them just went “Don’t go thinking you’re special, I’ve already been onstage with Goldfrapp.”

People have also taken to leaving items on stage during the interval that you interact with later on. What kind of stuff do they leave? i have no idea where it started, but people just started giving little gifts on the stage. then it just became a thing where people tried to outdo each other. there are some nights where there’s so much i have to get a broom and just push it all off to the side. When people make stuff themselves, that’s amazing, the best one i ever had was somebody made me a proper suit made out of bubble wrap. it was great. and people leave

vegetables that they’ve carved into the shape of my face, stuff like that.

But i have to be careful, otherwise i’ll suddenly discover that i’ve done an hour of just talking about the stuff people have left onstage.

You’re a big motorbike fan. Will you take your bike on tour? yeah, i try and do as much as i can. that’s kind of how i got into bikes in the first place. the travelling is the most boring bit of touring. i biked around australia when i was touring, and decided to bike the whole way round. So i ended up doing 26,000 kilometres. it was brilliant.

Lastly, is it really true that you once played the love interest to Ian Smith, who played Harold Bishop in Neighbours? yeah! i did. i’ve always been a stand-up through-and-through. Some comics just want to act. i’ve always thought “If I ever do that, it’s got to be fun.” two years ago, Peter Richardson asked me if i wanted to be in the new Comic Strip. So of course i did that, and it was so much fun that i wanted to do a bit more. So i then did a horror film, Stitches, playing a murderous undead clown out for revenge. So i got a taste for them, but didn’t write either of them. then a friend of mine who makes an australian show called It’s a Date, a drama about people going on dates, suggested i co-wrote and starred in an episode. it can be anything you want. now, i could have chosen anyone to star with, instead i said “I know exactly what I want to do. I want to play a gay fella who’s on Grindr, looking for a guy, and he thinks he’s going to meet somebody who looks like Antonio Banderas.” and my mate said “Right. And who would you be on the date with?” and i said “Ian Smith.

Harold from Neighbours.” So i wrote the script and that was it. even as it was happening, i couldn’t get my head around the fact that harold was my love interest. maybe one day it’ll get shown over here.

Understanding why your dad enjoys tinkering with his classic car all the time and instead of going to your room after meal times, engaging in conversations about life, the universe and topical debates. you can now connect with them as adults because you get them and in the not too distant future they’ll be looking at you for help and guidance. this makes the whole moving home process that much more easier and interesting. they still won’t mind doing your ironing, if you put it on their pile of clothes already in need of a pressing session!

CureS Many of us enjoy a couple of drinks at the end of the week, or mid-week if you’re like us, and we all know what happens when you get the flavour. One or two becomes four or five, a bottle of wine and a couple of stiff ones for the road. Before you know it you’re out for the count and waking up with kebab stuck to your face. As you peel open your eyes it hits you. The hangover! We’re here with a few simple tips on how to get back on your feet and ready to start again!

Vitamin B my mother used to always insist that the best way to beat a hangover was prevention. this came by drinking a pint of water for every pint of alcohol consumed. While there’s logic in this – alcohol dehydrates the body, which is why you’ll wake up with gandhi’s fl ip flop in your mouth. instead of this precautionary nonsense, invest in a tube of Berroca’s from Boots. Pop one of these fi zzy treats into a pint of water, and watch it fi zz away. glug this down, and the vitamins contained (B Vitamins especially) will get to work metabolising the alcohol, whilst dilating blood vessels which will bring all of last night’s energy back to the body.

With the success of her international number one anthem, ‘all about that Bass’, meghan trainor is fastbecoming one of the most talked about voices of her generation, promoting positive messages wrapped up in the most infectious new pop sound of recent years.

What was it like finding out you were nominated for two Grammys? epic. a person who makes music only dreams, and i’ve done it at 21 years old. to win is a whole other game, but just to be nominated means for the rest of my life i’ll be introduced as ‘grammy nominated meghan trainor’. that’s fricking epic!

It’s an incredible achievement at just 21 years old – writing for other artists, having one of the biggest selling songs ever, ‘‘All All About That Bass’ Bass’,, over 6 million copies! yeah! i’ve lived… all of my friends are songwriters and producers and i’ve lived all their dreams. they all say to me ‘you’ve accomplished what we try to do everyday’! as songwriters our goal is for other popular singers to sing our songs, but the real goal inside is to be singing them ourselves.

You get to do both. ‘‘Sledgehammer’ that you wrote for Fifth Harmony is becoming massive too. i wrote that with michael Keaton’s son. isn’t that mind blowing? Sean Douglas, he’s a fantastic writer. he also wrote Glow by Demi Lovato. he’s crazy, he’s great.

What was your highlight of 2014? my birthday was everything. i had an arena of 20,000 people sing happy Birthday to me because of nick Jonas – who i’m the biggest fan of. i also just performed on the Jimmy Fallon show. afterwards Jimmy came to talk mayhemmag |

to me and my parents about how he just loved my album and wants to play it and, i remember i was acting so cool, but once he turned around i was like ‘oh my god’!

You’ve also had artists like Beyoncé saying that they’re fans of your music, and Michael Bublé did a cover of ‘All About That Bass’ on Instagram. i’m obsessed with him. One of my goals in life is make sure michael Bublé knows i exist. i saw it on instagram – i remember i was laying in bed and i just got up and was like ‘mum did you see it?’ – she said ‘I saw it, I saw it!’ it!’.. i went to his concert thinking ‘oh he’s so good on track, he’s probably terrible live’ live’,, but he was even better live. he’s so funny. ‘ ‘All About That Bass’ has become a global hit and was #1 here for four weeks. Did you know it was going be successful when you were writing it? i spoke to my favourite songwriters and they said ‘how do you know you’ve got a hit?’ and i said ‘it’s the ones you never guess‘. We wrote ‘All About That Bass’ and shelved it. i thought it was a ‘cool song’ song’, but, ‘whatever! – no ones gonna hear this. no pop star can sing this because they’re all size zero’s and no one can rap and sing’.

So the fact this was probably the biggest song of my life, it was one of those, i had no clue. What you hear today is exactly the same as the demo. no auto tune or anything.

Have you ever been anywhere in public and it’s being played? yeah, it’s weird. i remember the only time that i got really weirded – i was home on my island and i went to a sushi place. i walk in and ‘Lips Are Movin’ is playing and five minutes later ‘Bass’ plays, and then ‘Lips’ plays again. i was like ‘damn I’m famous.

Like it’s real’.

Do you remember where you were when you first heard it on the radio? i was with my producer in nashville. i was just balling, not because it was the fi rst time, but because it sounded good! i thought it was gonna sound so bad on the radio, but sounded great!

Are there any songs that you listen to and think ‘damn I wish I could’ve written that’?

‘Halo’ by Beyoncé. What a song! i was thinking about it this morning – those lyrics! ‘Remember those walls I built, baby they’re tumbling down’. also ‘Mistletoe’ by Justin Bieber. i thought that was one of the best Christmas songs i’ve ever heard!

So how’s it been, flying around the world visiting loads of places? it’s amazing. it’s one of those things that at 21 years old, i can say i’ve been to australia, germany, italy, Sweden and the UK. What home comforts do you take with you on the road? i have a stuffed Penguin named Paddles, he’s kinda famous on instagram. i take him everywhere. also my mums jewellery, because my parents can’t always come with me – i love looking at them to remind me of them.

Your dad must be very proud of you, considering he was a musician too? he was a band teacher at one point but he has always said ‘make sure whatever job you choose, just be the best at it’. So getting the grammy i’m kinda like, ‘best song of the year’! Did it!

Mayhem! gets the scissors out and takes a fun coiffured look back at the bad hairstyles through history, but be warned it may bring back some painful memories!

tHe moHawk tHe FawCett FliP For those that remember the 70s, Farrah Fawcett literally revolutionised the way women styled their hair when she appeared on the tV series Charlie’s Angels. her big bouncy hairstyle, nicknamed the “Fawcett Flip”, was achieved by using a curling iron and plenty of hairspray to give that effortless pin-up salon look.

although originally dating from the ancient indigenous people of north america who lived in the mohawk Valley, hollywood (and later the punk scene) would revive the style. there are many variations from the classic mohawks with simple shaved central strips of hair and “liberty spikes” to the more elaborate “frohawk”, where hair is twisted on the side like that popularised by mr t. “i pity the fool!”

tHe mullet tHe Perm the permanent wave or perm was quite literally huge in the 80s for women. it was all about crimping, curls and chemicals to help achieve the biggest hair made famous by stars like madonna, Cyndi Lauper and Whitney. tHe SHaG the 90s was huge for the tV comedy Friends and a young then unknown actress called Jennifer aniston. getting inspiration from 70s rockers like Joan Jett and mick Jagger, her take on “the Shag” or “the Rachael”, coupled with her on screen character, charisma and personality, created one of the most asked-for haircuts of the decade. it was all about casual and effortless choppy layers and texture. the just got out of bed look that took hours to perfect!

tHe FroSteD tiPS in contrast understated for the guys in the 90s was all about going completely over the top! the “frosted tips” spiky look was created using as much hair product and gels as possible, combined with bleached tips. it was all about getting in touch with a guy’s metrosexual side, looking like they’d just stepped out of a boy band (think early take that or a young Justin timberlake!).

That’s right, Ferrero’s famous chocolate spread is so popular around the world, it has its own appreciation day. On 5th February we spread the love in celebration with some not-so-common recipes.

Created in italy, the home of pizza,we present the nutella pizza. all you need is some pizza dough (self- or ready-made), unsweetened whipped cream, toasted hazelnuts and, of course, your favourite chocolate spread. Bake the pizza dough thoroughly, spread on the nutella and decorate with the whipped cream (which is supposed to resemble mozzarella). Spead the hazelnuts to fi nish. Buon appetito!

i loaF it! nutella on bread is already pretty good, but how awesome would it be if nutella was mixed into the bread itself?! to achieve this delicious treat, you’ll need yeast, butter, sugar, eggs, milk, flour and a pinch of salt mixed together. Roll out the dough and then spread the fi lling (nutella with butter and cinnamon sugar) before baking in the oven. Simple as that!

Pasta and nutella? For this rather obscure sounding but amazing meal, you’ll need butternut squash ravioli that will be served with a sauce made of butter, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg, whipping cream and nutella. melt the butter and then stir it with the other ingredients until you get a smooth, creamy sauce. add to the ravioli and dig in!

AstronoMicAl! Take your eye from the telescope for just a second as we dance to the music of the spheres in celebration of Pluto Planet Day! Marked every year on 13th March to commemorate the initial discovery of what was first known as Planet X, a proposed ninth planet in the solar system.

So, let’s take a starry walk down to the Mayhem! observatory and look at the facts...

Pluto PLaNet or PLaNot tHe nintH Planet the quest for Planet X began in 1906, when Percival Lowell (founder of arizona’s Lowell Observatory) threw funds at a project to fi nd the proposed ninth planet. Just three years later he and noted astronomer William henry Pickering had proposed several possible celestial co-ordinates for Planet X, but were no closer to fi nding it when in 1916 Percival died.

What he didn’t know was that two surveys by his own observatory had actually captured faint images of what would come to be known as Pluto. they just weren’t recognised as such and were hastily dismissed; an oversight which extended to the ignorance or lack of knowledge of at least fi fteen other successful attempts to discern it. the oldest 38 MAYHeM! | winter 2015

dates back to 1909, made by the yerkes Observatory in Wisconsin. a ten-year battle of wills with Perce’s widow, Constance, following his death forced the hunt to be postponed until 1929, when things really got interesting! the brilliantlynamed director of the search, Vesto melvin Slipher, gave the job of fi nding Planet X to a young man named Clyde tombaugh, who’d displayed promise in his astronomical drawings. it would have a spectacular pay-off with massive ramifications for the wider perception of the solar system.

Venetia, GiVer oF nameS having sent a copy of one of tombaugh’s clearest photos showing a moving object in the night sky to the harvard College Observatory, the

race was on to name it and the Lowell Observatory opened the doors to the public to have their say. the winner was proposed by an eleven year old from Oxford by the very english name of Venetia Burney.

Drawing on her interests in both astronomy and classical mythology, she put forward Pluto (a god of the underworld, ruler of hades, or hell, in greek myths). apt, considering the planet was thought to be dark and chilly! it was officially named on 24th march 1930, having won the vote of every member of the observatory. What were the other names put forward, you may well ask? and since you do, they were minerva (the Roman goddess of wisdom, whose name had actually already been given to an asteroid) and Kronos (the first of the greek mythological titans). there’s a nice nod to old Perce, too, in that the first two letters of the name are his own initials! it takes 248 of our earth years for Pluto to complete an orbit around the Sun and the planet is served by five satellite moons (Charon, nox, hydra, Kerberos and Styx).

Since 2006 it’s only been classed as a minor or dwarf planet thanks to an iaU (international astronomical Union) resolution on what constitutes a planet. harsh considering it only misses out by virtue of failing the third criteria on the list: 1) the object must be in orbit around the Sun. 2) the object must be massive enough to be a sphere by its own gravitational force. more specifically, its own gravity should pull it into a shape of hydrostatic equilibrium.

3) it must have cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit.

Harsh indeed, but keep watching the skies!

maratHon these still exist of course – but are now called Snickers bars. the irritating change of name from tried and tested favourite to irritating new one came about because the manufacturers found it more economic to give their brands the same name and packaging worldwide – so marathon in the UK had to adopt the american name of Snickers.

Similarly, the much loved and chewed Opal Fruits (‘made to make your mouth water’) became Starburst.

We did win some of the rebranding battles however. Raiders bars in the US were renamed twix over there, the familiar name in the UK.

SweetS SPaCe DuSt SPanGleS these were a brand of boiled sweets that helped rot children’s teeth all over the UK from the 1950’s to the late 1970’s. Wrapped in paper or cellophane they had the same shape as today’s tunes medicated sweets – but tasted a whole lot better and were made for crunching! among the most nostalgically remembered flavours were Fizzy Orange and Coca Cola (these hurt your nose if you sucked too eagerly) and the Olde english type which included Pear Drop and Butterscotch flavours – and were, without exception, disgusting!

this was an orange flavoured concoction made to look like – well, dust – that consisted sugar, lactose, corn syrup and artificial flavours.

So not the healthiest! it pretty much tasted of nothing as well, the gimmick being that, when you put some in your mouth it caused a noisy and rather explosive reaction as it dissolved. its popularity swept through school playgrounds in the 1970’s was as virulent as Chicken Pox – and probably less healthy. One urban myth claimed that mixing Space Dust with Coca Cola would cause your stomach to explode and such a degree of hysteria built up around it that the sweets were banned in some schools!

if you had a loose tooth that you really wanted to get rid of – or just wanted to lose a fi lling or two, this one was for you. it was a nougat and toffee bar covered in chocolate and was just about the hardest substance known to man. you COULD attempt to bite a piece clean off – but you would have needed a jaw of industrial strength to succeed. invariably devotees of the texan bar settled for just sucking the chocolate off, using the unyielding nougat underneath as a crowbar.

Sweet CiGaretteS yep, you could really pop into your local shop and ask for a packet of 20 cigarettes, even if you were ten!

Picture the scene, hoards of young children playfully imitating the act of smoking – comparing brands and swapping the collectable cards that invariably came with them – the sugary sweet ciggie lookalikes even having a red colouring at the tip to indicate that it was ‘lit’. the rather obvious connotations with smoking ultimately led to the sweets being banned in many countries else renamed ‘candy sticks’ – not that anyone was fooled!

Proudly unveiling their new album ‘Kitty, Daisy & Lewis The Third’, three years on since their hugely acclaimed ‘Smoking In Heaven’. having been away for three years, building a new 16 track analogue studio and with mick Jones of the Clash now on production duties, the band knew they could take their third album to another level in terms of songwriting, instrumentation, style, production and sound.

Swift ly granted Record Of the Week status by huw Stephens on BBC Radio 1, championed by Jo Wiley on BBC Radio 2 and receiving airplay on BBC 6 music, their track, ‘Baby Bye Bye’ rapidly garnered traction across the globe, accompanied by a mesmeric video – the fi rst in a unique trilogy – shot by award winning director tom Coles. Mayhem! talks past, present and future with the trio…

Having been away from the music scene for three years was it a conscious decision to take your time with this new record?

Lewis: after the release of our previous record, “Smoking In Heaven”, we toured for a couple of years and started to build a new recording studio. in the meantime we were playing and rehearsing our new songs. apart from having the privilege of our own recording facilities, we haven’t been pushed or forced to do stuff, which is the benefit of not being on a major label. although saying that, there comes a point where you can’t wait to get it all wrapped up and see it in the shops.

With so many exciting genres to your music from swing and R & B to blues and country, how would you describe your sound to new fans?

Lewis: i think our sound comes from when we were at home as kids and exposed to all different types of music. We always used to play and sing and have fun. When you’re young you don’t really think about genres or where music is from, you just enjoy it. So, we heard everything from jazz to glam rock and i think certain elements come out in us.

British pop music has featured all sorts over the years, the cultural diversity in London is a special thing. mayhemmag |

You’re all extremely talented and play a variety of instruments, is there anything you’d like to have a go at – widening your potential sound.

Kitty: i’ve always loved the harp, i used to watch a lot of marx Brothers fi lms (and still do) and when i fi rst saw harpo marx playing the harp i fell in love with the sound and i’ve always wanted to learn. We had an incredible harpist, tara minton, come and play on our new record, i’m hoping she’ll give me a few tips when i have the time!

Your music features a mix of styles, who are your influences past and present?

Daisy: Our mum always played records at home, mainly 7" singles from her impressive collection.

She had a lot of great 60s and 70s stuff. We’re influenced by so many great artists – t-Rex, the Velvet Underground, Bert Kaempfert, Johnny Cash, Louis Jordan and Stevie Wonder… the list goes on all the way through to the pop music of today.

What influence did your folks have on your musical interests growing up?

Kitty: a huge influence. my Dad came from a big family in india and they used to play and sing together. mum has always loved music and played drums in a band when she was a

teenager. they never pushed us to play or said we must learn, we just did it for fun. the house was always full of music, and instruments too.

So naturally we picked them up.

Famously you perform as a whole family, how did your mum joining the band come about?

Lewis: it’s actually pretty simple, we needed a bass player so we asked her. She couldn’t play the bass but we’d had one in the house for years.

We showed her the basics and she picked it up – she’d mess around with it when we jammed. She learned it pretty quickly and started rocking the gigs with us. the double bass we use came from our local dump yard – someone was about to throw it in the skip and we saved it. the neck was broken off and it was in a very poor condition, but we glued it all back together and painted it up.

How were you first discovered and connected with Rob Da Banks label Sunday Best?

We played a gig for topshop nearly 10 years ago and Rob Da Bank was djing. he saw our set and really liked it. We’ve been with Sunday Best ever since. they never interfere musically and have a lot of patience but most of all they’re enthusiastic about our music.

Mick Jones (of the Clash) produced your new album, ‘Kitty, Daisy & Lewis the Third’, What has he brought to the band’s sound?

Lewis: mick rehearsed with us for about six month before recording and that had a massive influence on the music. Just playing and rehearsing meant we became tighter at playing the songs. he was a fresh set of ears which we’d never had before, it made the vibe kind of interesting and more focused.

How did the collaboration come about?

Daisy: We’ve known mick for a few years – we played a club night that he put on. he’s one of those people who has many connections and likes getting involved – we’d bump into him here and there. We decided to get a producer involved but it was hard trying to find the right person.

We were all drunk in a bar in italy somewhere on tour, and our manager 46 MAYHeM! | winter 2015

said “What about Mick Jones”, we all thought it was a great idea, so we spoke to him at the notting hill Carnival and he was really keen to hear us play. the rest is history.

What was the idea behind the album artwork?

Lewis: the idea came from seeing how album artwork is displayed on itunes. Someone said, “Its literally the size of a postage stamp!”. So we thought, lets make the album a ‘postage stamp’.

We did the photos and liked the look of them together on screen so we mocked that up. the stamp of King george the 6th has a crown graphic hovering above his head so that’s what we did for me. i flipped my image upside down because my photograph was shorter and for a bit of anarchy!

Do you have any favourite tracks on the new album?

Lewis: each song is so different and after working on them for so long it’s

difficult to listen without being critical but i like the “Baby Bye Bye Dub Version” which is an instrumental. We recorded various parts of the song onto 1/4" tape from the master multitrack – the drums and bass, then the guitar and vocals on a separate bit of tape and so forth. then we chopped it up and taped it in different places to create a kind of collage of sound.

What’s been your most memorable festival experience?

Lewis: turning up to Secret garden Party and having to walk all our gear through rain and deep mud about 100ft to the stage. the gig was great. another was when security at glastonbury wouldn’t let us into the festival. We were due on stage in 15 minutes, and we’d been stuck outside for a few hours before that. We ended up driving past security and somehow made the show.

A cHAt witH… You’ve supported diverse acts such as Amy Winehouse, Coldplay, Stereophonics and Jools Holland, who would you love to perform with?

Lewis: i’d say i’m already dreaming, to have edward “tan tan” thornton, the trumpet player who plays with us. he comes from Jamaica where he studied music in a convent for poor boys run by nuns. Lots of the Skatalites also went there. he moved to england in the 50s and started playing Jazz clubs around London. he’s sessioned for tons of hits since the early 60s. he played on Stones records, Beatles records... his stories are unbelievable – he’s part of the family and definitely a dream to play with.

You built a 16 track analogue studio for the new album, how important is tradition in the way you approach the recording process?

Lewis: We use an older technique of recording for the sound that can be achieved. Digital doesn’t quite capture the energy and magic that can exist in music. i’ve had a passion for and been interested in electronics and audio since i was a teenager. i started making phonograph records and if i’m not playing music, i’m repairing amplifiers or building equipment or designing something.

my approach is purely technical and i find the design, build and sound quality of professional equipment manufactured between the 40s and mid 60s generally surpasses that of todays.

Where do you find your vintage style clothing?

Kitty: Daisy and i design and make our own jumpsuits – a lot of our stage gear is hand made. most of my day to day clothes are vintage items accumulated over the years and stuff mum had when she was younger.

How do you relax on tour?

Lewis: Being on tour is actually one of the most relaxing times. Right now, we’re gearing up for touring so there’s lots to sort out, its a full time job! Once you get on the road, you can just play music and chill.

Releasing your music on 7" and 10" vinyl, do you feel a responsibility to champion the vinyl revival?

Lewis: For me it’s great because the record factories are busier than ever. i can remember speaking to friends who owned record factories a couple of years ago with many shutting down. there’s only one thing that drives people to work in the phonograph record business – and that’s passion!

Right now the business is strong but for how long, i don’t know. as for us, we’ve always released on phonograph records. the 10" 78s started out as a technical exercise, but it’s still ongoing.

Going back a while, how did you choose the order of your names in the title of the band?

Daisy: We were due to play our first ever festival, tapestry goes West, we had no name for the band, it hadn’t even occurred to us that we were a real band. it all happened so naturally and people just wanted to watch us play. Barry, the guy who ran the festival, needed to have a name for us to put on the lineup, so he just put us down and Kitty, Daisy & Lewis.

We ended up just sticking with that!

Finally, 2015 brings a worldwide tour for the band, where are you most excited to be playing?

Lewis: We have fun everywhere we go. Once i’m playing i forget where i am, so it doesn’t matter when i’m caught in the moment. it’s one of those things when you’re doing something you love. however, i’m really looking forward to Japan. We went there twice before their disaster and haven’t been back since. it’s a really crazy cool place and we had some great times.

into tHe wooDS The greatly anticipated film combines music, fairy tales, action and romance. With an all-star cast including Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Johnny Depp and James Corden. It’s no surprise that the film is set to be a huge success and has already been nominated for numerous awards.

Intertwining well-known fairy tales characters including Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Bean stalk , Cinderella and Rapunzel, the story centres on reversing an old family curse, the wicked witch can only consider after she receives certain hard-to-get items.

2015 2014 was a year to remember in film. We had the latest instalments from the Planet of the Apes, The Hunger Games, The Hobbit and X-Men. this year’s stakes are equally as high, with too many to fit on a page here are just a small selection of films you should see in 2015.

JurraSiC worlD Who didn’t love Jurassic Park the fi rst time round? 22 years later it’s back. Starring Chris Pratt, Katie mcgrath and Bryce Dallas howard, isla nublar has now transformed into a public theme park. after struggling for ten years with decline in sales, the park introduces a new attraction to try and regain visitors. this back fi res and i’m sure you can guess the rest, huge, dangerous and scaly, dinosaurs everywhere! an action packed picture with lots of nostalgia from the fi rst fi lms all them years ago.

FiFtY SHaDeS oF GreY Released in cinemas in time for Valentine’s Day, and pre-booking being open since late last year, the novel adaptation will grace the big screens this year. taking the world by storm, the first of the trilogy written by e.L James, centres around a young student and a slightly tormented young billionaire. Christian grey’s love for erotic romance boasts for a new kind of experience for innocent anastacia. the main roles being played by Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, the first instalment is set to be a hit!

Cake Starring Jennifer aniston, and hailed an Oscar worthy performance from the usual chick-flick and former Friends star, CAKE follows the life of Claire. Claire suffers with chronic pain and treats it with illegal substances. aGent SmitH if ever there was a reason to regularly run antivirus software on your PC, this vindictive computer virus is it. his weary calling card to Keanu Reeves in The Matrix trilogy of “Mis-ter An-der-SON” was an inevitable prelude to cyber carnage in an attempt to destroy what was left of life outside of the matrix. Smith was also quintessentially polite and immaculately dressed, the sort of movie villain any father would be proud to see his daughter marry.

With celebrities openly admitting to having plastic surgery as a quick fix, it’s allowing people to think that having cosmetic procedures is the perfect solution. more people in the UK are having plastic surgery to fix body hang-ups or even surgery in order to help them progress in their careers. But what happens when the perfect solution doesn’t go to plan?

Many celebrities today have gone through so many procedures they’re barely recognisable. So when does it become too much, and will it ever stop?

Jocelyn Wildenstein is famously known as ‘’the cat woman’’ after undergoing more than 4 million dollars worth of cosmetic procedures to look like a feline for her husband.

Joan Rivers had never been secretive when it comes to plastic surgery.

She admitted to having over 700 procedures during her life getting practically every surgery you can think of. Janice Dickinson, the world’s fi rst supermodel, recently admitted that she lives for plastic surgery. But why carry on when your own lip Botox has gone wrong leaving you with the famous duck pout?

these are just some of the celebrities today that have had a procedure turn out wrong. But this isn’t dissuading them from having more work done and it’s not stopping people in the UK doing the same. Celebrities that end up with botched boob jobs or duck pouts are endlessly spending money on repair procedures – it’s a vicious circle that many struggle to get out of. according to the British association of aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BaaPS) they’ve seen an increase of 13% since last year just on breast augmentations, which also remains the top surgical procedure in the UK for both men and women.

Other cosmetic procedures also seeing an increase are rhinoplasty up 17%, liposuction up 41% and fat transfer up 14.5%.

With a little nip and tuck here or there, some people think it will help improve their body image and maybe even their lives. But has the thought of plastic surgery become over rated? People that are thinking about cosmetic procedures are no longer considering the disadvantages of a botched job and endless amounts of money to correct it, instead they’re blinkered by the idea of a better body and maybe a step up in their careers. elective plastic surgery is nothing to be taken lightly, and should always be strongly considered and discussed with trusted professionals as there will always be an element of risk. So, before you go under the knife it might be worth another look in the mirror.
