SAILING THE AMERICA’S CUP WORLD SERIES

PORTSMOUTH The spectacular sight of America’s Cup Racing is coming to British waters this summer when the America’s Cup World Series (ACWS) takes place in Portsmouth 23–26 July 2015.

The America’s Cup World Series is a collection of regattas leading up to the 35th America’s Cup. Every race will count in the series with vital points being secured ahead of the America’s Cup in Bermuda come 2017. The racing will feature the best sailors in the world competing on sleek AC45 catamarans that ‘fly’ on foils at astonishing speeds of up to 40mph.

The racing in Portsmouth will take place within touching distance of the onshore spectator Fanzone Arena 10 MAYHEM! | SUMMER 2015

and cannot fail to be entertaining.

The event offers the chance to get under the skin of America’s Cup – see the sailors close up, learn about the racing, the history and the technology.

Southsea is the location for both spectator arenas and they will offer exhilarating views of the racing with live expert commentary giving a blow by blow account as the team’s battle on the race course with bars and food zones, providing the perfect place to relax.

Teams competing in the America’s Cup World Series in Portsmouth include the America’s Cup defenders Oracle Team USA and the four challengers including Swedish entry Artemis Racing, French entry Team France and Emirates Team New Zealand. How to watch From Thursday 23rd to Sunday 26th July 2015: Southsea is the place be to enjoy an incredible four days of fun filled, action packed and family friendly sporting action.

The fi rst day of the event and the opportunity to be the fi rst to see ‘The Cup’ arrive into Portsmouth for the fi rst time, see the official parade of sail and the boats on water for the fi rst time in the race area.

See the skippers close up as they walk through the Waterfront Arena and onto the Fanzone stage for the official press conference.

School’s out and it’s the fi rst day of the summer holidays with lots to do for all ages. In the evening is the official opening ceremony followed by the fi rst night of the South Coast Proms Royal Marines Band.

Friday is all about speed and flying – wings, water and wheels. Listen to the design and technology guests from the worlds of sailing and Formula One explain how the technology compares and how these boats can literally fly above water. Watch the Moths and Kitesurfing displays in the morning, see the incredible Red Arrows aerial display before the teams and boats start their preview races.

Pick your favourite sailors and team and pin your colours on them. In the evening enjoy the second night of the South Coast Proms Royal Marines Band.

Saturday is the big day – where sailing gets serious and points are won or lost with two races between 1.30pm–3pm. This is the opportunity to cheer for the home team, Ben Ainslie Racing, and see them notch up their fi rst race points. On Saturday evening; superstars Spandau Ballet joined

by Brit Award-winning rockers Bastille, boy band super group McBusted and international No.1 singer-songwriter, Carly Rae Jepsen, will take to the main stage to entertain the crowds until the sun goes down.

SUNDAY Super Sunday is the last day and the day the winner claims victory for this fi rst ACWS event. It’s double points scoring day so it will be all open until the last race.

A full day on the water and aerial displays culminating in the official prizegiving on the main stage in the Waterfront Arena.

While working in close proximity to other co-workers there are a few common-sense guidelines to take that may not be so common for some to comprehend. Here are a few things to avoid that will help in not driving your co-workers crazy:

BE QUIET

DON’T ASK

The office is already fi lled with the sounds of printers, ringing phones and those “loud” talkers so don’t add to it by listening to music or watching videos without headphones, banging extra loudly on your keyboard or being a loud talker yourself.

If there’s something you can figure out on your own or with a quick Google search, just do it. Don’t interrupt your co-workers by asking simple questions. Look it up yourself.

DON’T GOSSIP Refrain from talking about your co-workers’ or bosses’ personal lives behind their backs. You never know who may be listening and, more importantly, it’s counterproductive. If you do talk about a co-worker when they’re not around, keep it positive.

GROW UP When sending emails, avoid using text-speak like “LOL” or “OMG” or “SMH.” If you’re really mature you probably don’t know what any of that means, so you’re already ahead of the curve. It’s simply not professional to “snd emls lyk dis.”

AVOID PERSONAL LIFE Don’t make or take personal calls or texts unless it’s an emergency or brief in nature. No one wants to hear your drama, so clock out and take it outside. The same can be said about unloading your personal issues – like paying bills and dealing with children – on others when they simply ask, “How’s it going?”

SMELL GOOD Be aware of your personal hygiene, body odour and bad breath. If you ride a bike or walk to work, bring deodorant to re-apply before stinking out the office. On the fl ip side, there’s no need to empty the perfume bottle! The same can be said for foods – if you bring a tuna sandwich for lunch, take a quick break outside and chew some gum or suck a mint before breathing over everyone.

BE ON POINT Don’t show up unprepared or late for meetings especially those scheduled for days or even weeks ahead. Do everyone a favour by showing up five minutes early ready to deliver whatever part of the meeting you’re responsible for, otherwise, you’re wasting everyone’s time, and the company’s money.

FIX IT If there’s a problem that can be corrected don’t just complain about it repeatedly. Everyone knows who dropped the ball anyway, so bringing more attention to it is just counterproductive.

Be a team player and just fix it, so everyone can move on.

DON’T BRAG

NO WHINING

If you land a big account or promotion, don’t celebrate too wildly in front of others that may be struggling to get an account or a raise. Also, if you’re caught up on your work and have nothing to do, don’t brag about that as it may ruffle the feathers of a swamped co-worker. Instead, offer to help others get caught up.

Don’t complain about your job, your boss or your co-workers.

Every job has its pros and cons — just deal with it. No matter what you’re complaining about, there is someone who has it worse than you, or doesn’t even have a job to complain about. If you’re that unhappy with your job, it might be worth looking for something new.

NATURALLY DOES IT Cheapie baby oils may be much easier on the pocket but are generally made from mineral oil (look out for paraffi num liquidum on the label) which is derived from petroleum jelly. This can block pores and potentially irritate some skins rather than nourishing them. Try opting for a natural alternative – look out for almond oil, wheat germ oil, sunflower, olive and coconut oil for instance – the latter two also make very economic pre shampoo treatments for dry hair (cover hair with a warm towel after applying a small amount of warmed oil to the ends then shampoo out).

If you’re short of cash generally buy a bottle of natural base oil like almond from somewhere such as Holland & Barrett and add a couple of drops of your favourite aromatherapy oil to turn it into a scented body oil.

BENEFITS Running costs you nothing and you can practically do it anywhere at any time and best of all, you burn more calories than most other forms of exercise. Research has proven it can reduce the risk of developing strokes, diabetes and heart disease.

SLOW AND STEADY Despite being cost free, you should defi nitely consider investing in a good quality pair of running shoes.

Visit your local sports shop, try some on and get professional advice. You don’t have to spend a fortune, but do remember, the more you spend the better the quality.

If you have any injuries or health issues, visit your GP to get medical advice on training. If you’re just a bit out of shape or inactive, start with walks and slowly progress to power walking, jogging and eventually running. It’s best to start off gently and regularly with some short distances twice a week rather than a long route one week and nothing the next.

RUNNING AHEAD It’s easy to fi nd excuses like bad weather so staying motivated can be difficult. Why not start running with a friend? Or join your local running club? Keeping a diary will help you to stay focused and using a pedometer can help motivation by seeing how far you’ve managed and how many calories you’ve burnt. Find some inspirational music to help you stay in an up-beat mood. Set some goals, and monitor your progress.

WALKING WONGA Once you feel fit, you could always try entering a local charity event.

Not only will you be putting all your training to the test, but you’ll also help to raise money for a good cause.

Running the same courses can be tedious, but by running in an event you’ll enjoy a new route and maybe even make some new running friends along the way!

DON’T FORGET Always warm up and cool down before and after your run to avoid cramps and injuries. Plan your route before you go and tell somebody where you’re headed. If choose to run in the dark, stay on illuminated main roads and invest in some high visibility clothing. Most importantly, have fun!

TELEPHONE Perhaps the frustration of missing out on previous jobs thanks to phone interviews inspired Blondie to sing about being left hanging – but it doesn’t mean you have to make the same mistakes. With that in mind we present our handy guide to making the phone interview work for you and snaffling employment with the minimum of fuss!

THE LAY OF THE LANDLINE

RSVP WATER ON TAP We all know nerves are natural. So combat that mysterious outbreak of a soprano voice and dry mouth by making sure you’ve got a glass of water at hand. Calm sips between answers to any questions the interviewer throws at you may also help give the impression of cool, calm collectedness – never a bad thing to project in any situation.

SILENCE IS GOLDEN Should the call come, switch off any possible distractions and fi nd a quiet spot in which to conduct the interview. That means no TV, radio or computer, in simplest terms! You’ll be expected to give your all for however long they keep you on the phone, so eyes forward soldier. If your mind wanders at any point they can usually tell – which means game over, and nobody wants that.

Rhythm, Speed, Volume and Pitch.

Perhaps the simplest tip in the book. Speak clearly and vary the rhythm, speed, volume and the pitch of your voice. Mumble and the interviewer will be none the wiser about why you want the job or why they’re bothering to speak to you.

Simple steps but oh so vital in the move from the dole to the desk.

GO THE EXTRA SMILE Smile! You may have heard this one before, and usually when the camera is out, but it’s just as valid here. Believe it or not people can tell your mood from your vocal tone – so if you can sound happy and radiate positivity it just might be crazy enough to work and a more relaxed you can only be a good thing. Confidence is key and cracking a grin while adopting a positive mindset is a good way to go about getting it, and making it work for you!

We’ve all been frustrated by the poor quality of a mobile phone signal from time to time, so if you have a good old-fashioned landline, make good use of it! If not, make sure you dial those digits from somewhere you know your mobile signal will be strong. After all, why kick yourself over missing out on that dream job when the solution is so close at hand?

Don’t let missed calls cost you more than just pounds on your phone bill.

STANDING TALL While the temptation to lounge in an attempt to give off a relaxed air to an interviewer might seem in practice to be a great idea, it really isn’t. Stand tall though and things could really start to look up!

It’ll really help to get you into a proper working mindset, so you’ll be on the ball when the questions keep coming. Roll with the intellectual punches and the world’s your oyster.

CAT GOT YOUR TONGUE?

You may well wish your beloved feline friend had, after you stop and consider the fine art of the tonguetwister, those spoken (or in some cases, sung) tests of verbal dexterity, which can leave even the best of us in mental knots.

A VERY BRITISH BEWILDERMENT Pleasingly, most early examples of the tongue-twister appear to originate on our own fair shores, perhaps a reflection of the beauty and variety of our native tongue and indeed sense of humour! Let’s start simple with a sentence which ought to give your vocal cords a decent warm-up – ‘The seething sea ceaseth and thus the seething sea sufficeth us’.

This has been identified by American humourist William Poundstone as ‘the most difficult of common English-language tongue twisters’, though we don’t know what he’s on about, that’s a walk in the park compared to some others!

Another more common one which surely everyone must know is ‘She Sells Sea-Shells On The Sea-Shore’.

Given life by songwriter Terry Sullivan, with music by composer Harry Gifford, it surely had music-hall punters in fits as they tried to plough through it after a few pints. Have a go yourself – count yourself in and 22 MAYHEM! | SUMMER 2015

simply say ‘She sells sea-shells on the sea-shore. The shells she sells are sea-shells, I’m sure. For if she sells sea-shells on the sea-shore Then I’m sure she sells sea-shore shells.’

More complex, granted! And there are countless other examples.

KIDS STUFF Surely everyone remembers similar ones from their days on the school playground? Whether as skipping rhymes or just a chance to show off your vocabulary, who can forget the classics like Peter Piper (sadly not related to the album track of the same name from Run-DMC’s Raising Hell, though most would surely love to hear Run and DMC have a go at it).

Indeed they and others within hip-hop have done their best to contribute, with lines like ‘This speech is my recital, I think it’s very vital to rock a rhyme that’s right on time, it’s tricky’, and they’re not wrong – so our congratulations to the MCs who’ve managed to master the skill!

There’s also Red Lorry, Yellow Lorry to transport you back to your school-days alongside oldies like A Proper Copper Coffee Pot and Pleasant Mother Pheasant Plucker, which has the potential to go very wrong, so it’s probably wise not to attempt to say it in front of your own or indeed anyone else’s mother, at any time, ever. Folks around the world have got in on the act, too!

Take a look at the likes of the Dutch ‘De koetsier poetst de postkoets met postkoetspoets’ (‘The stagecoach driver polishes the stagecoach with stagecoachpolish’), Croatia also making a bid for the Eurovision Tongue-Twister Contest with ‘Pop kopa prokop, kroz prokop kopa pop’ (‘The priest digs a ditch, through ditch the priest digs’).

That should keep you doing the Tongue-Twist for a while – though be sure to come back and twist again!

MEÄNKIELI Literally translated, Meänkieli means ‘our language’ and describes a Finnish dialect that’s spoken by a small community around the border between Sweden and Finland.

Until the beginning of the 19th Century, all of what is Finland today was still Swedish territory, meaning Meänkieli developed separately from today’s Finnish. Though it was oppressed at the time, the Swedish government nowadays recognises Meänkieli and tries to support it.

DO YOU SPEAK EUROPEAN? Europe is one of the most culturally diverse continents with 24 official languages. Mayhem! takes a look at five minority languages that you’ve probably never heard of before.

FRISIAN

Now you’ve probably guessed that English, French and German are the most used languages in the EU, but did you know that there are half a million people in Germany and the Netherlands who speak Frisian?

Divided into West, Saterland and North Frisian, this language belongs to the Germanic language family, with resemblance to Dutch and Low German. Nowadays, it’s threatened mostly by German, although the government puts effort into maintaining the language and appreciating its value.

This is spoken in North-East Italy, mainly in and around the area of Udine. Even though there are about 794,000 speakers, it’s used less and less often, which is in part due to the government: minority languages get the order of the boot, ironically in a boot-shaped country! Still, people are trying to keep their language alive with the help of private initiatives such as a Friulian radio station and a monthly magazine published in Friulian.

Walloon, which belongs to the Romanic languages, was widely spoken in Belgium and in some small parts of Northern France (and also, randomly, in Wisconsin) until the 20th Century.

Since Wallonia, the Southern part of Belgium, is mostly French-speaking today, Walloon is slowly dying out.

Its speakers try to promote it, for example, in theatre productions and other areas, trying their best to save it from extinction.

BERBER Berber languages describe a language family originated in North Africa. Everybody knows North Africa is not part of the EU, but Melilla is a city in Morocco which politically belongs to Spain, thus a Spanish exclave. Berber’s status as a minority language, of course, has to be regarded differently from the others – outside of the EU, there are approximately 20 million speakers of Berber.

These are just a few examples of a wider group of 40 minority languages – the fact that the EU recognises them is encouraging – as long as there are people and governments trying to maintain them there’s a pretty good chance they’ll survive a little longer!

ANTIOXIDANTS Antioxidant nutrients (vitamins A, C and E, some of the B complex vitamins, selenium, manganese and zinc) play a major role in destroying free radicals in the body. The main victim of free radical damage in skin is collagen, which keeps skin looking plump and elastic. Uncooked, highly coloured fresh fruit and vegetables are the best places to fi nd high levels of antioxidants. Choose dark berries, nuts, coloured organic vegetables such as broccoli, carrot, kale, spinach, sweet potatoes and tomatoes.

ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) come in two classes, Omega-3 and Omega-6, and it’s Omega 3 that have the most effect on skin.

The body can’t make EFAs, so they have to come from our food. Oily fi sh such as sardines, tuna and salmon are good sources of EFAs, as are nuts and seeds, organic eggs, and soya beans. A quick way to increase your intake is to use sesame, rapeseed, walnut, soya bean or flax oils in the kitchen. Add them in their raw state to your food rather than heating them which change their nutritional quality. At the same time, you should reduce your intake of saturated and processed fats because these can cancel out the beneficial effects of EFAs.

VITAMIN E Vitamin E is an antioxidant, which works with selenium and has a powerful action against free radical damage. It also helps the skin retain moisture. Premature wrinkles, pale skin, acne, easy bruising and slow wound healing may indicate a deficiency. Choose nuts such as brazils and almonds as well as seeds and avocados.

At a time when dieting and better health is in the forefront of people’s minds, it seems we’re prepared to do anything in an effort to shed those extra pounds. We’ve come across another bunch of crazy diets, which we certainly don’t recommend no matter how effective they may prove to be.

THE KETO DIET THE FAT BLACK DIET Full-fat milk, coffee, butter, oil? The combination of a dieters hell! But according to Silicon Valley entrepreneur Dave Asprey, the question we’ll be pondering on is “One lump of butter or two?”.

What’s known as the “bulletproof coffee”– a 460 calorie heart attack in a cup – will allegedly boost your energy, promote brain power and actually help you loose weight! Asprey attributes a daily dose of the caffeine concoction for his 36kg weight loss. To our surprise his invention is increasing in popularity.

One that’s actually been around since the 1920s by a doctor to rid seizures in epileptic patients.

It’s extremely low in carbohydrates but high in fat, much like a twist on the Atkins diet. Followers of the Keto diet tuck into slabs of meat, nuts, cream and cheese. The diet is high in protein therefore leaving you fuller for longer.

Scientists have discovered that if the body is devoid of carbs to use for energy it switches to burning up fat instead. Sounds like the perfect solution, except for the bad breath and possible constipation listed in the side effects.

EAR STAPLING

MONO MEAL DIET Participants of the mono meal diet are restricted to only one food per meal.

This regime is said to eliminate the risk of bad food combinations and leads to rapid weight loss. This diet does unfortunately come with exclusions. No you can’t just have a burger for breakfast, lunch and dinner, your meal must be based around the fruit and vegetable variety. Mono dieters have started trending on instagram where you can gawk over photos of fruit salads… how exciting!

Stomach stapling maybe, but ear stapling? How will this contribute to your goal of the ‘dream body’.

This new and invasive diet method is gaining popularity and involves a practitioner inserting a staple into the inner cartilage of the ear to target a pressure point which is said to suppress appetite. It remains in your ear for two months and claims to take away hunger and reduce sugar cravings. There’s no scientific evidence for ear stapling and some cases have experienced extreme side effects including pain in the jaw as well as ear infections. Is this really worth a ‘dream body?’

We recommend sticking to a healthy balanced diet with regular exercise and you’ll feel fit and healthy with no need for extremes, but if you do feel inclined be sure to check in with your GP before diving in.

Three decades a er the last instalment in the post-apocalyptic saga, Mad Max is back.

Resurrecting the franchise for one last blast – and probably two or three more – Mad Max: Fury Road sees director George Miller take his audiences on a wild ride through his dystopian desert of few words and many explosions. Tom Hardy takes the driver’s seat as Max Rockastansky, giving a superb performance as vulnerable human caught amidst mechanized mayhem. So far, the film is getting rave reviews and being hailed as the action movie of the decade.

Hardy replaces Mel Gibson in the titular role, whose distant, deranged performance in the fi rst three fi lms made him a star. Over recent years, Hardy has gained critical acclaim for his success in a diverse set of roles, including a pumped up fi ghter in Warrior, the unhinged super-villain Bane in The Dark Knight Returns and, more recently, the soft ly spoken protagonist in Locke. However, it’s his much revered performance as violent prisoner Charles Bronson in the Bronson biopic that bears closest resemblance to this latest MAYHEMMAG |

role. Hardy speaks of being “drawn to characters who frighten me”, which is easy to believe when watching Bronson, and Mad Max for that matter. Hardy is incredibly adept at conveying an ominous sense of impending danger though his characters. His heavy physique and muscular movements do just as much talking as his scripted lines. The characters seem to constantly teeter on the brink of impetuous violence, dragging any fleeting moment of dialogue back into the next action sequence.

MAYHEM! MEETS… Hardy does incredibly well in Mad Max, confidently traversing Miller’s landscape of chaos and destruction. Along with his fellow lost souls, Hardy’s Max struggles to come to terms with “who was more crazy” in “a world without hope.

Off-screen Hardy speaks of the self-sabotaging side of his personality, something he’s had a tough time fighting in the past.

It’s this, which he terms his “400-pound orangutan”, that we see glimpses of in the difficult roles on-screen. “I’m very peaceful in real life now, but because of all the hell I went through in the past I can use all that in creating very dark characters.”

Growing up the son of an advertising writer father and an artist mother, Hardy attended public school but was an indifferent student. In his late teens and early twenties, he went on wild drug and alcohol binges. Soon after, Hardy was expelled from his school for theft, whereupon he began sinking deeper into his addiction and troubles with the police. Waking up one morning in Soho in a puddle of his own blood and vomit, Hardy finally realised he’d reached the point where he needed to check himself into rehab. That was in 2003 and he’s remained clean ever since.

Speaking openly about the incident, Hardy admits he’s “lucky to be alive.”

With his role in Mad Max drawing him further into the public eye, Hardy has taken the opportunity to speak about his past problems with drugs. For someone in the micro-managed PR world of Hollywood stardom, the move has been an undeniably brave one.

Hardy cites his acting work as the driving factor that has kept him from falling back down the rabbit hole of addiction. For him, 32 MAYHEM! | SUMMER 2015

self-destruction is “part of my addictive personality and something I will probably always have to be on guard against. But it feeds my work and I confine it to that space instead of letting it ruin my life. Having to deal with that makes you stronger – it makes you want to be better.”

Hardy speaks incredibly highly of “genius” director George Miller.

There’s a respect for Miller’s confident return to the story after so long away. Hardy admires the fact Miller has “spent half his life living with these characters and had the whole story in his head.” Though much updated since the last fi lm thirty years ago, Miller has retained a profound and complex visual understanding of the saga.

For Hardy, who used to watch the fi lms as a child, Miller has stuck to a clear understanding of “what he wanted to do in the film”. Watching Mad Max, you’ll realise that what Miller wanted to do in the fi lm, was create a sequence of almost continuous chaos. Coming home to Mad Max is, for Miller, a release of three decades worth of pent up desire for pandemonium. In that way, Miller and Hardy are much alike. MEXICO On the other side of the world we stop in Mexico for a barbacoa. Lamb is traditionally cooked over a hole in the ground. Served with warm tortillas, guacomole and salsa. Cool down with raspberry peach aqua fresca. In the US a barbecue is usually referred to as a “grilling”. In Latin America the meat is roasted over a longer period of time and further away from the coals.

ARGENTINA There’s no free for all at Argentinean barbecues where the meats are cooked and served in a very set and specific order. Barbecues are called Asados and the national dish, Embutidos, are various kinds of sausages served along marraqueta (bread), followed by meats such as flank steaks, chicken and chivito (the meat of a young goat), a simple mixed salad, all washed down with beer, wine and soda.

The Chinese marinate their meat in honey prior to it being cooked by means of a long, hand held fork over a fi re.

SOUTH AFRICA The Cape of Good Hope is the last stop on this culinary journey. The South African ‘Braais’ includes lamb or mutton sosaties, kebabs, marinated chicken, steaks and sausages as well as pap, a thickened porridge made from fi nely ground corn. Braais are sometimes also called ‘dop en tjop’; a ‘dop’ is slang for an alcoholic drink while ‘tjop’ is an Afrikaans word for lamp chop. This expression is used when there’s lots of drinking going on during the barbecue. Bottoms up!

WOMEN: Often perceived as masculine but there’s nothing wrong about a pretty girl with a big fat pint in her hand and a moustache made of froth.

FOR POSITION Being sporty types, we couldn’t help but notice that wrestling will be making a comeback at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo – though we may be in touch with the International Olympic Committee, as we have an idea that could really draw in the punters. Instead of traditional Greco-Roman grappling (as is currently practised by the hulked-out behemoths hoping to win by pin for their countries), we’d love to see everything done in professional wrestling style!

Part performance art, part combat sport, it’s gloriously over the top, and would make for a fantastic spectacle.

DEAD WEIGHT!

UP FOR THE FIGHT Wrestling won its battle to be reinstated as an Olympic sport in a ballot of IOC members in Buenos Aires – receiving 49 votes to beat off a combined attack from baseball/softball and squash, which achieved 24 and 22 respectively. It had been due to hang up its sweaty garb after the 2016 Games in Rio, but won out after proposed reforms to the sport’s administration at Olympic level.

If it was down to us the whole thing would have a little more razzmatazz, in common with its more theatrical cousin, which started out as carnival entertainment in post-Civil War America. Onlookers invited to try and beat combatants with amateur experience by pin or submission, President Abraham Lincoln’s patronage and enthusiastic practice of the sport no doubt helping somewhat!

Though there’s no evidence that ‘Honest Abe’ used his scrapping skills to settle votes on the tough issues of the time, we’re sure we’re not alone in hoping that he might have.

PIN-HOLDS IN PORTSMOUTH Professional wrestling has a long and rich history in both the United States and good old Blighty – Portsmouth itself was formerly home to the Fratton Wrestling Alliance (FWA), founded by Mark Sloan in 1993 before becoming the Frontier Wrestling Alliance in 1999. Certainly a shot in the eye for those who think it begins and ends with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) or Total Non-stop Action Wrestling (TNA)!

While our American cousins may have perfected the formula for ‘sports entertainment’, which was initially kept under lock and key but is now something of an open secret in line with the carnival traditions from which it comes, combining theatrics with actual athletic ability, another important component has a solely British origin.

CATCH-WRESTLE ME IF YOU CAN

LIKE GOLD DUST

Catch wrestling is a style based on classical Greco-Roman grappling, though it’s doubtful history books carry records of Milo of Croton, a great exponent of the sport, winning many of his bouts with the flamboyance we take for granted watching the best of modern professional wrestling.

We still wouldn’t mess with him, though, he won six Ancient Olympic titles.

Moving into the 1920s, we now step into the ring with three men known to hardened wrestlemaniacs as the ‘Gold Dust Trio’ – wrestlers Ed ‘Strangler’ Lewis (above) and Joseph ‘Toots’ Mondt, and Strangler’s manager Billy Sandow. The three men did much to shape the early years of pro wrestling through their ‘Slam Bang Western-Style Wrestling’, which looked to add a little pizazz to the Greco-Roman template, body slams and suplexes among the moves added to the standard grapples.

And his legacy lives on today, albeit with a few tweaks courtesy of J.G Chambers, who called it the ‘catch-as-catch-can’ style – carnival wrestlers adding their own submission holds to the mix as they looked to take on all comers from the audiences who gathered to watch them.

It quickly grew from a bottom of the bill music hall event to bigger sports arenas, with the addition of scripted elements – surprise finishes to matches being just one example – adding even more to the overall package which the likes of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and Total Non-Stop Action Wrestling (TNA) adhere to this day, and we hope will add weight to our call to the IOC!

Several English counties also had their own local styles – Cornwall and Devon, Cumberland and Westmorland and Lancashire all lending their names to brawling schools of thought and ensuring their pub fights could get hairy rather too quickly!

CYCLE Bike Week, the UK’s biggest mass participation cycling event, takes place between 13–21 June.

Offering something for everyone; from families, schools and companies, to seasoned cyclists and those who have never cycled before, it is an annual opportunity to promote cycling and to show how easy it is to become part of everyday life, by encouraging ‘everyday cycling for everyone.’

In 2012, almost half a million people took part, joining in events and taking part in the celebrations of cycling across the UK. This year, Bike Week is asking the nation to dig out their bikes, get back on the saddle and fall in love with cycling all over again.

Demonstrating the social, health and environmental benefits of cycling, the week aims to get people to give cycling a go all over the UK, whether this is for fun, as a means of getting around to the local shops, school, and work or just to visit friends.

Pack away your itsy-bisty-polkadot bikni and your mankini’s to take a step back through history of swimwear past to present.

Back in the 19th Century, women wore big bathing dresses and were taken directly to the water in a changing room on wheels. Men, on the other hand wore “Urekas” which were huge suits with paddle gloves and emergency flags.

In the Victorian times, women wore smaller dressers but also sported stockings when going for a swim.

Luckily, after the Olympic Games, once swimming became popular as a sport, swimsuits were soon modernised to accommodate and bathing suits were more like a short sleeved and legged onesie.

The era of the 20’s soon came and so did Hollywood glitz and glamour. The sleeves became shorter and the legs were reduced significantly to above the knee. However, certain beaches in USA had regulations on lengths.

The original public reaction wasn’t too kind but the look was soon a huge hit which we still love today.

Shortly after the 1950’s the famous Hawaiian print trunks were introduced for men.

The 1930’s saw men wearing short that were tight but regular lengths.

Women’s swim suits developed straps and hotpant styles. Curvy women such as Marilyn Monroe posed in these outfits and ensured that curvy women were embraced for their fuller fi gures. By 1942, the original bikini was fi nally invented

by French Designer, Louis Reard.

THE ARMED FORCES Made up of three divisions; the Naval Service, the British Army and the Royal Air Force, the armed forces all swear allegiance to Queen Elizabeth II. At present, there are 195,690 personnel available for British Service. The British Armed Forces’ job is to protect the UK and its overseas territories as well as supporting international peacekeeping and Britain’s security interests.

THE NAVAL SERVICE The Naval Service compromises of both the Royal Navy and Marines and is the oldest service within the Armed Forces.

Currently the UK has 77 commissioned ships and 170 aircraft . It also boasts to have had a submarine service for more than 100 years. Who said Britain was behind with technology?

THE ROYAL AIR FORCE Often perceived as the ‘posh boy’s service’ the RAF operates around 827 aircraft and independent flights are deployed to facilities in Afghanistan, the Falkland Islands, Iraq and the USA. British Aerospace developed the second most expensive fighter aircraft in the world, The Eurofighter Typhoon which costs a staggering £64.8 million!

Possibly the most wellknown service, this division is made up of the Regular Army and the Territorial Army and is made up of 50 battalions, organised in to 17 regiments. The British Army has been managed by the Ministry of Defence since 1964 and active since 1707 in which it has been involved in a number of major wars including; WW1 and WW2, the Seven Years War, the Napoleonic Wars and the Crimean War. Well, a gap year can offer a variety of advantages. It could be a way of reconnecting with yourself, to take stock of what’s important in your life or simply to offer a once in a lifetime experience. Here we offer some short tips and advice on how to make those dreams a reality, to say goodbye to the mundanity and throw yourself into a world of the unknown...

GO TRAVELLING! Three months to dart through the well-trodden spine of South-East Asia, taking in the delights of Angkor Wat or the insanity of Thailand’s beach parties. Or maybe a year traversing through South America, discovering lost tribes, steaming rainforests and vast cities. Travelling is in one breath life changing and completely terrifying but the experiences and memories gained can last a lifetime.

Get past the time spent away from family or, if travelling solo, the initial pangs of loneliness and you could be well set to have the time of your life. It takes a huge amount of sacrifice to save the money to make it attainable, but the amount will naturally depend on what you want from your adventure.

VOLUNTEERING If travelling all seems a bit self-indulgent and not enough about adding something to the world, then you may consider volunteering as the perfect alternative. From teaching English in Cambodia, helping distribute medical supplies in Guatemala or working in an orphanage in Ghana, there are a staggering number of opportunities out there. Of course volunteering doesn’t necessarily mean leaving the UK, but if you are looking for the chance to push your boundaries then volunteering abroad could be the thing you need to re-evaluate your life.

A CHANGE OF CAREER A gap year, for all of its potential to offer experiences and fulfi l lifelong ambitions, may also be the time you need to take a career break. A fractured economy and lack of prospects may lead you to think otherwise, but in some respects there has never been a better time to take the plunge. Further education courses are plentiful and relatively cheap and cover an abundance of subjects.

Although fi nancially the prospect of changing career may seem daunting, the benefits both personally and also to your career could be huge. That lifetime ambition to become a photographer may not be out of your reach yet!

These fish are a long way from water.

“It’s an exciting time”

“You need to bring something to the party” David Poole fi rmly tells me when I enquire into the urge of originality in their music. Beside him his music-partner, Dominic Peters, prepare humming along to the muffled live electro draped in a baggy V-neck and golden tended hair. Both reek of cool, the faces behind the mask of a neo-swing sound. A knock arises from the backstage door of the Coronet Theatre and a grinning, perplexed assistant shuffles in, “There’s three women here that say they know you, MAYHEMMAG |

The duo, laid-back surfers hailing from Cape Town, have been riding the wave of acclaim since 2005 merging electronic-dance with the atmospheric suave of live-jazz performance. They’re two halves of the same brain whose variation of organic, fluid tracks either take one feeling relaxed on the sand of those placid foreign beaches or pulsating the mind with a tip of chill through the heart of an EDM-rave merging singing saxophone solo’s and smooth bass-lines. “Jazz was cool” Dave says on the reinvented genre, “but it wasn’t something people our age as a group were jamming to”. Goldfish extinguish the monotonous subject of lazy, two-hands-raised DJ performance, cracking to the stage with the sleek-provocation of funk and often breaking into improvisation so that every audience gets a unique experience.

I could call them Moby with a pulse or the grooving cousins of Parov Stellar – however comparisons are futile. These musicians take their craft as a limb of integrity making the music they want, fi lling every gig with an impressive number of fans from minimum promotion. Dom leans proudly forward, “People don’t go, ‘Oh, you sound like this band’ – they say we sound like Goldfish”.

“It’s harder that way” Dave nods, “But what’s happening when you’re making something original, that’s it, that’s yours forever”. The pair met as trained jazz-musicians, sparking inspiration from three-hour gig trips that turned from simple jams that integrated into a electric-dance scene which at the time “just wasn’t there”.

Goldfish quickly spiced the globe, “We love Amsterdam and Amsterdam loves us”, while touring an America where EDM was barely crowning.

They are a band moving on Newton’s

law, every action of their career later ripples with a reaction. Their fi rst album was showered with praise, getting them an invite to reside in Ibiza superclub Pacha for a stint that saw them develop their second album, Perceptions of Pacha, in 2008.

“We were no longer asking people if we could play, they were asking us!

Everybody wanted us – we’d gone from being a niche newspaper to a niche toilet paper. We were thrown from Cape Town onto the dance floor of Pacha and being told to rock it!

We went back to DIY. I think every musician needs that refreshment”.

Two stylish men wander in cheering happily with friendly handshakes, “You made it!” Dave smiles. In a time when musicians are evolving from artists into commercial-brands the pair reflects on the industry that “the big guys are struggling to make music, so they’re looking to successful artists as a quickfire... the producers think”, Dave snaps a fancy accent, “Okay, we’ll throw in sugar and mix that with flour and” – he proceeds to name a long list of metaphorical, food-related music ingredients – “And then they release it and presume people will love it”. His tone quickly drops, “That’s where the music industry is”.

They have an edge of premature wisdom to their position as musicians. “Of course it’s still surreal – even if you don’t realize it” Dom admits, “we went to Brazil and there were massive billboards of us – it was weird man; only this year we realized we’ve been to five continents!” Though all the changes and stress, Goldfi sh push that it’s not a time to complain, “It’s an exciting time, the best thing you can do if you’re scared is dig right in there and grab life by the horns”. So there you have it, folks: When life feels heavy on your back just recall this chilled advice from two surfer-dudes that dared to follow the beat. Check out www.goldfi shlive.com.

LINE-UP ANNOUNCED

The Proclaimers; 10cc; Billy Bragg; Wilko Johnson; Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel; and The South are among the headline acts confirmed for this year’s Wickham Festival in Hampshire.

6th–9th August 2015 Over 20,000 people are expected to attend the four-day festival which takes place on fields near the historic village of Wickham near Fareham in Hampshire over the weekend of Thursday 6th to Sunday 9th August.

Other artists booked to appear include Tom Robinson; Andy Fairweather-Low and many top folk and celtic music stars including Seth Lakeman; Eliza Carthy; Kathryn Tickell and The Side; Show of Hands; Roy Bailey; Martin Carthy; Edward II; and, from Ireland, ex-Waterboys star Sharon Shannon and Luka Bloom.

World music artists include The Spooky Mens Chorale from Australia;

De Temps Antan from Quebec; the world-renowned piper Carlos Nunez from Galicia in Spain; and Banjo-Vie from France.

The Wickham Festival features live music on three stages plus a host of other attractions including the ‘Groovy Movie’ solar-powered cinema tent; a digital funfair; storytelling; puppet theatre; dance displays; playbus; laser arena; Punch and Judy; shanty singers, bouncy castles and childrens entertainers.

Wickham Festival organiser Peter Chegwyn said that this year’s line-up is the strongest yet in the Festival’s 10-year history and ‘earlybird’ ticket sales had broken all records.

“Wickham is the biggest live music with camping festival in Hampshire and also the most friendly, relaxed and safest with not a single incident of trouble last year. The festival is believed to generate over £5 million for the local economy with people travelling from all over the world to attend.”

New Theatre Royal is offering residents, local businesses, groups, schools and other organisations across the region a once in a lifetime opportunity to become part of this beautiful Victorian theatre’s history.

The theatre will open later this year following a £4.5m rebuild and refurbishment programme which includes a fantastic new creative learning centre.

The campaign has support from personalities including musician and BBC broadcaster Paul Jones; acclaimed singer-songwriter Beatie Wolfe; the Minghella family; actors Sheila Hancock CBE, Joanna David, Edward Fox CBE, Tim West CBE and Prunella Scales CBE; BBC fi lm critic Mark Kermode; International ‘Hoofer’ Lee Payne; Sir Alec Reed CBE, and many more.

Beatie Wolfe, comments: “I am so delighted to be supporting New Theatre Royal who have such a pioneering approach to the arts which encompasses all mediums and for all ages. This campaign is a fantastic opportunity for anyone to get involved and support this innovative new chapter for the theatre.”

New Theatre Royal is scheduled to reopen in Autumn 2015, with a range of world-class performances and events.

The opportunity to name a seat is available during the opening year at the special cost of just £215. The seats will display each sponsor’s name on a plaque for the life of the seat. Open to everyone, the seats can be used as a unique gift , as a dedication to a loved one, to promote a business or as a way of showing your support for the theatre.
