Latest COVID-19 Update Vaccinations by the numbers As of August 18th, 1.9 million doses have been administered to county residents. Those who are fully vaccinated are 914,000+, making 50.6% of the county fully vaccinated.

COVID-19 Booster Shots Now Available at County Vaccination Sites “Recent studies have shown that people with compromised immune systems do not produce the same level of antibody and cell immunity to the COVID virus and were having more breakthrough infections and illness,” said Dr. Michael Sequeira, Public Health Of cer for the County of San Bernardino. “These studies showed that a third shot, a booster shot, brings that level up to a safe zone.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced Wednesday a plan to widen eligibility for a third shot eight months after a second dose to all Americans who received P zer and Moderna vaccines beginning the week of Sept. 20.

The Bike Rodeo hosted by Healthy Rialto took place on August 14th. This free event provided bike obstacle courses, bike check and repair, helmet ttings and bicycle raf es! Rialto PD of cers participated in this event, which teaches children the skills and precautions to ride a bicycle safely.

Thank you to The Rialto Police Bene ts Association and Walmart for their generous donation of children's bikes for our community and congratulations to all the bike winners!

Redistricting Meeting San Bernardino County is preparing for the County’s Redistricting effort. The Rialto City Council chambers will be utilized for the meeting of the County’s Advisory Redistricting Commission on Thursday, September 2nd at 6:00p.m.

The meeting should be less than two hours and seven commissioners along with two staff members will be present.

NEW: EPA Appoints Mayor Robertson + Others on LGAC History Chartered in 1993 under the Federal Advisory Committee Act, the Local Government Advisory Committee provides independent policy advice to the EPA Administrator on a broad range of issues affecting local governments. The Small Community Advisory Subcommittee was established by EPA in 1996 to advise the Administrator on environmental issues of concern to the residents of smaller communities.

“Today, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Michael S. Regan announced the appointment of 34 new members to the Local Government Advisory Committee (LGAC). The 39member LGAC will include 20 women, 16 people of color, and representation from 30 different states, Tribal nations, and U.S. territories, representing a diverse cross-

section of cities, counties, towns, and communities across the United States. The Administrator also appointed 16 new members to the LGAC's Small Communities Advisory Subcommittee.”

Our very own Jewel of the Inland Empire, Mayor Deborah Robertson, has been an appointed member of this esteemed group of leaders. As a member, Mayor Robertson will advise the EPA Administrator on critical environmental issues that greatly impact local governments.

Allanah Mouton Allanah Mouton, a thirteen-year-old from Rialto, is now a college student through the Early Entrance Program for the Honors College at CSU Los Angeles. Though this is a major accomplishment, the journey described by her mother Vickie Davis, challenged her academic abilities and perseverance.

Interviewer: How did you nd out about the Early Entrance Program (EEP)?

“Her grandmother saw the program on channel 2.”

Testimonies of youth aged 17/18 that had graduated with bachelor degrees by this age were broadcasted and this prompted Allanah and her mother to apply. Both mother and daughter were interviewed regarding Allanah’s written work, extracurricular activities, volunteer activities, and more. After a lengthy application period, Allanah was met with a congratulatory letter welcoming her to their veweek summer program. The summer program is the preliminary step to the entrance into the program and included three college-level courses including calculus, social science, and natural science course. Typically, a college course is over the span of a semester, about 16 weeks, so a semester course crammed into ve weeks is going to have an overbearing amount of information.

Vickie stated, “This was her rst introduction to classes like this because, for her, she’s coming from the 8th grade.”

Interviewer: What were some of the challenges she faced?

“Since she is a very determined person, she thrives off of a challenge and I ask her why and she simply says she wants to be the best. But this was the rst time she was academically challenged. Allanah experienced what it feels like to be stressed and maybe not be at the top of her class.

But, this experience taught perseverance and intuitiveness and for her to empathize with herself. A program that challenges your academic ability wants to know when you are faced with a challenge, how will you react? And she

handled it very well.” During the ve weeks, Allanah was faced with her biggest challenge; calculus. At her age, her peers are typically learning about geometry and prealgebra. But, not being introduced to material such as calculus caused some frustration. Allanah instead acquired a tutor and did extra practice work to pass.

After completing the summer program, all of her hard work and perseverance prevailed. She was accepted into the EPP. Interviewer: Outside of her academics, who is Allanah?

“Allanah is very mature. As a four-year-old, she would attend college classes with me and take fake notes.

Professors were always amazed by her concentration.”

Allanah enjoys volunteering at a care facility for the mentally ill through her family’s non-pro t called Tomorrow’s World and Black on the Block. In addition, she is a big sister to Anessa, her eight-year-old sister and she admires her grandmother greatly.

Allanah truly exempli es strength and perseverance even at the early age of thirteen and we are truly proud of our young jewel from the jewel of the I.E.
