Mayor Deborah Robertson’s NEWSLETTER
BY CHARLI LENAY
WORD FROM THE MAYOR The month of June is full of incredible opportunities to get involved in our community. As most of you are aware, the current status of our county has shifted from a global health pandemic to a human crisis; sparking peaceful marches in all fifty states and worldwide. Community members and I organized a peaceful protest of our own in hopes to continue the ongoing relationship building in Rialto with our community members and the Police Department. The march showed us what happens when a community, community leaders, and those who protect it come together for a meaningful cause. In addition to peaceful marches, June is Men’s Health Awareness Month; making men aware to regularly get prostate examinations and to stay healthy. Lastly, Juneteenth was Friday, June 19th; marking the ending of slavery in the United States. I just want to thank everyone who has participated in the BLM movement, in any form, in hopes to embark on change nationwide.

Mayor Deborah Robertson
Happy Birthday Mayor! On Juneteenth, Madam Mayor celebrated her birthday amongst family. For her birthday this year, she is asking for donations to Inland Empire Section National Council of Negro Women Inc. The organization was founded in 1935 by Mary McLeod Bethune, in an alliance with other organizations, standing for justice and a responsibility worldwide. The Inland Empire Section, chartered in 1968, for the Inland Empire, with beginnings in Rialto, adopted the last plank of her legacy, “And finally, I leave you a responsibility for our youth‌â€?! For
over 53 years, the Inland Empire Section, under the Bethune Center program, has delivered on this responsibility. Therefore, she has chosen this nonprofit because their mission means a lot to her, and she hopes you will consider contributing as a way to celebrate with her. Every little bit will help reach her goal of $5,000! Please donate from your heart. Today, more than ever, all young lives deserve a future, especially amongst Black youth, and their life! Click here to donate. 2

2020 Congressional Art winners announced! The 2020 Congressional Art Competition for California’s 31st Congressional District winners have been announced. Two of our very own from Rialto High School students, Ashley Cabrera and Eliana Jackson, were announced winners. Stated by Rialto Unified School District, her 1st place submission "Her Struggle," Ashely will have her photograph displayed in the US Capitol for one year. She will have the opportunity to travel with her family to Washington, D.C. to meet with other contest winners. What an outstanding accomplishment! Her incredible photograph was inspired by her mom. “The struggle my mother goes through inspired me to photograph her," Ashely said. "My intentions in this artwork was to portray the emotions that a mother is feeling. I wanted to make her facial expression powerful and be the main focus of this photo. I chose this media because I personally am able to tell a story through photography.”
Eliana earned 3rd place for her submission "Angelic," which will be displayed in Representative Pete Aguilar’s San Bernardino office. We are so proud of both Ashley and Eliana!
BY ELIANA JACKSON
Mr. Steven Rodriguez, Rialto High School Chair of VAPA said of Ashely's accomplishment: "This is big news for Rialto Unified. We celebrate Ashely for her hard work and talent!” BY ASHLEY CABRERA
