Samira Salau is an 18-year-old California Military Institute graduate who started her entrepreneurial journey during the COVID-19 pandemic. During our interview, I asked her a few questions about her journey, inspiration, and what it is like being an entrepreneur at her age. She stated, “During the beginning of quarantine, my siblings and I developed a liking for roller skating, but my younger brother did not own any skates. With a few alterations to an old pair of shoes, he was able to join the fun of roller skating. My story was shared on Facebook and received so much attention that I decided to create my own business; Sammy's Skate Shop, a custom roller skate shop. I taught myself how to create skates out of any shoe and receive orders from all around the world including Australia. I have a passion for roller skating and having the opportunity to share my passion with others is unexplainable. This quarantine has been very stressful for my family, however, making skates is highly therapeutic and I am glad to share my creativity with others. Taking advantage of this dif cult time and using digital media to my ability has been an experience I will cherish. I am honored to operate my small business to express my creative skills as a young black woman.” Samira Salau has created dozens of custom skates for local, state, and international customers. She will be headed off to UC Irvine but, she plans on continuing her business to share her passion with others. To place an order, you can visit her Business Instagram here Personal Instagram here Depop Shop here

State and Local Rental Assistance Program

To help people stay in stable housing during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued an order that means you may be protected from eviction if you can’t afford to pay your rent. To be protected, you must sign and give a CDC Declaration to your landlord.

The CDC just extended its eviction protection order until July 31, 2021. If you already gave your landlord a CDC Declaration and your situation hasn’t changed, you don’t need to do it again to be protected until July 31. If you haven’t given your landlord a Declaration yet, nd out if you're eligible and see the steps to take here.
