project 1 | Site analysis

[3127] SS15 is a central business area under the municipality of Subang Jaya. Well known as an educational district, there are numerous higher education institutes such as Taylor’s College, Inti and Metropolitan College in the area. The majority of the population which consist mainly of students, results in a huge proliferation of eateries and cafe.

architectural design project Building on design brief and preanalysis of context, user and programme presented in Project 1a, design a building that delivers a strong relationship to place, people and time. It is imperative for your design to be environmentally sustainable and be knowledgeable of the materials, services and construction systems employed in the building, while adhering in principle to regulatory bylaws (UBBL) and fire regulation. The building must be no larger than 2000m2 and no lesser than 3, and not higher than 5storeys, including covered circulation.

SS15 is dynamic and vibrant, with the students constantly dictating the changing trends and tastes.

programme a bustling education hub being home to several eductational institutions namely Taylor’s College Subang Jaya, Inti College, Metropolitan College & Sri KL International.

The proposed programme is a public library. A library that serves as a learning hub as well as a place where the community of SS15 which are the students can go to after class.

a popular go-to place for youth ages 13 to 23 to hang out or have meet-ups with friends due to the familiarity they have with the place as well as convenience.

It is a sanctuary of sorts that allows the user to escape for a few hours into the world of books and attain higher knowledge. Rather than spending hours and money in crowded cafes or shopping malls, they can choose to hang out in The Living Library which is safe and a conducive place for growth and development.

a place where new eateries thrive as there is a strong market of students who are wiling to try just about anything new, creating a dynamic space that is ever changing.

a place for leisure as entertainment such as karaoke (RedBox) and board game cafe (Meeples) that are great for gatherings with friends or for celebrating a relative’s birthday.

public courtyard in the Living Library; a place for social interaction and conversation between the youth of SS15 comprising of students from different institutions of learning

It is also a place of interaction whereby students from different educational institutions can convene with one another as there is no such place or building with a purpose to unite the student population of different institutions yet. With the library as a symbol for communal activity in SS15 via the public courtyard, it will give rise to a stronger community structure within SS15.

a place for business as a wide variety of goods & services are available to the masses for example, banking, shopping or getting your driver’s license.

When dealing with a complex site such as SS15 with a large student population, it goes without saying that the needs of these students should be met in order to create a more conducive learning envrionment for mental & physical growth & well-being. youth centre

When you think about it, SS15 has almost everything from a wide range of cafes to printing shops & mamak stallls. HOWEVER SS15 is lacking a place where students can call their own; a peaceful haven or a ‘third space’ whereby they can escape from the stress of university life or to just simple chill, so to speak, after a long, loooooong day. Moreover, SS15 is also lacking open spaces that belong to the public. When combining the need for more open spaces as

The Bigger Picture WHEN. WHY. HOW. WHAT. WHERE. WHO.

architectural design project

I

I have always been one to question the order of things. WHEN is it you should trust your gut instincts instead to follow your initial design concept, despite having your tutor advise you against it? WHY is it some regard Minimalism as the highest form of pure thought and design thinking while some simply see it as plain architecture? HOW is it socially acceptable for men to be shirtless in public and women can't? WHAT is it that makes up a sustainable community in an age where virtual interaction is becoming more and more apparent? WHERE exactly am I guiding you with these seemingly pointless random questions? I guess what I'm trying to illustrate is, the innate curiosity I have when it comes to figuring out how things work. In architecture, we are thought about the existence of the tangible and the intangible and how these two elements come together to form an experience or an existence. In my projects, I tend to gravitate towards the intangible aspects first, to get to know their intangible form first before dissecting how it came to be by looking at their tangible counter-parts. For example, I have always been fascinated by the term 'marketplace'. It is a place where people gather, forming a community and therefore does not exist without the people. For one project, I decided to find out more about what makes a marketplace sustainable as I feel this element should be extracted and inserted into buildings in an urban context. I feel strongly about this as growing up in Subang Jaya, a 'mall town' that is experiencing a boom in service apartments cum lifestyle shopping malls in recent years, there are buildings that were initially made to accommodate the growing populace now left struggling to find tenants. There are malls that existed prior to new malls now undergoing renovations or a complete concept makeover just so to keep attracting customers whereas some have become household names where Subang-ites have become regulars to. Why is it can some buildings sustain humanity and some can't? This element of sustainability when applied in a smaller scale will give rise to a positive change in a bigger scale. I have always been fascinated by the architecture of cities. I wanted to know how a city is planned therefore influencing the community, resulting in the birth of a civilization. In one of my projects, I studied the architecture of Tokyo. WHY is it one of the world's most famous capitals? WHO were the ones responsible for its construction? WHAT were they thinking? HOW has it maintained its reputation over the years? In another project I analysed Heeren Street, a prominent heritage street renamed Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock after the Independence, by documenting via photography the essence of the street. WHAT gave it its culture? HOW did place-making take place there? "You can't let urban planning be dictated by market forces alone. People should always be the starting point for good design. Not money or your portfolio. These days, city-making is all about managing people and processes. I'm wondering if architects and urban designers realize they should familiarize themselves with this new way of thinking. Design-thinking is over. -Caroline Vrauwdeunt, co-author of Pop-Up City : City-making in a Fluid World.

when why

how what where

I guess I'm always asking myself : WHO am I as an architect? That is THE question. And I guess, before one can ask oneself the bigger questions, one must first answer all the smaller questions first. It has always been about the bigger picture.

project I | CCM minutes documentation

[3612] from this project I learnt how to document CCM minutes and how to handle myself in a Client Consultant Meeting. I learnt the proper procedure of chairing a meeting as well as taking down formal. proper meeting minutes.

project management The objectives of this project are as follows: : To understand the application of management techniques in the control and direction of project resources s To evaluate the dynamic changes which occur during a projectts life cycle and the nature of a project projectts success. . To understand the means of evaluating success and failure in a projectts performance.

A full report was produced to document the entire project from an architect’s perspective. We acquired the necessary skills to handle clients in a meeting.

project 2 | Documentation of a medium sized project

For this project we were required to document the duration of our Architectural Design Project (Final Design Studio Project) from a CLIENT’s point of view. By doing so, I learned the many ups & downs of designing and constructing a Public Library in SS15. I had to do research on my Programme Viability, Design Suitability & Maintenance Strategies in order to make my proposed programme & design intent viable.

A 7-page report was produced, including GANTT Chart & Work Breakdown Structure.

project 1 | Submission drawings

[

] In this project, we had to produce submission drawings in groups of 5. We learnt the proper format and procedure in producing submission drawings, including creating formal title blocks and drawing order schedule.

building technology II Working Drawings are an integral part of the construction industry and the architect’s chief means of communication with the various levels of the authorities, clients and consultants. A comprehensive knowledge of the format and conventions of working drawings, as well as an overall awareness of its importance in practice is crucial for the student.

In this project, we were assessed by how well we applied the standard drawing conventions & clarity & quality of lineweights in order to produce legible drawings. Types of drawings produced are detail drawings, section, elevations, plans, & water supply system, door & window schedules.

project 2 | Integration

In this project, we had to produce construction drawings based off our final design studio project for our final semester. I applied my knowledge of detailing from Project 1 in order to produce legit construction drawings.
