Preferred Builders and DNA Architects delivered the 2022 House of the Year, with the home being colloquially referred to as The Nest. The home earned its name from its position amongst the treetops in Red Hill, with sweeping views of Canberra. The home brings in the best elements of nature with a central atrium delivering an abundance of natural light and fresh air.

A standout feature of the home is the highly detailed basement car museum. When you look past the impressive four-wheeled distractions, you see what one Excellence Awards judge described as “eye-straining meticulous workmanship.” This isn’t a first-time House of the Year win for Preferred Builders and DNA Architects who previously delivered a home for these clients in 2017 which took out House of the Year. The home is a fantastic collaboration between client, builder and designer.

Master Builders ACT and Asset Construction Hire are celebrating another year of collaboration on the Excellence Awards and we’re looking ahead to the exciting things that will come from the next 5-years of partnership.

Green is the colour of the year for many companies this year but going green is also a key focus for Canberra residents. The environment is the ultimate winner of this year’s Excellence Awards, with sustainable materials and technology being prominent across all projects, even new homes are utilising reclaimed materials. For example the Crace home delivered by MegaFlora Group, is a new build that features 150-year old structural timber that was rescued from old sheep salesyards in Goulburn. While the parquetry floor is a blend of ash, brush box and grey ironbark that was saved from demolished Canberra homes, over many years.

This year we also saw the 10th collaboration between 360 Building Solutions and The Mill: Architecture + Design, an impressive 8-star NatHERS rated home which utilises solar-passive principles. This home is an especially memorable project for both teams because the home is for the Director of The Mill Architecture and Design.
