A SKILFUL TECHNICAL MASTERPIECE

SHAW BUILDING GROUP

25 CESSNOCK STREET FYSHWICK ACT

Asset Construction Hire has proudly supported the MBA and our region’s construction industry since 2011.

As the official naming rights sponsor of the Building Excellence Awards, our team would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the finalists and winners in 2024!

WELCOME

This year’s Master Builders and Asset Construction Hire Excellence Awards showcase some remarkable commercial and civil projects that have emerged across Canberra, delivering the essential infrastructure and improved public spaces crucial for the city’s growth. From vital updates to iconic locations like the Sydney and Melbourne Building Laneways, to complex subdivision projects and incredible commercial builds and fit outs, our 2024 entrants have displayed exceptional skill, ingenuity and management across all projects.

Local school projects were prominently featured among this year’s winners, with three out of four Commercial Construction category winners delivering impressive education-focused projects. This includes Gungahlin’s new Shirley Smith High School by Icon Construction, the Collegian Centre at Radford College by FDC Constructions, and the multiuse Veritas Building at Marist College, along with the new administration and classroom building at Canberra Grammar School, delivered by Construction Control. Each project demonstrated an outstanding level of build quality and contemporary design, creating inspiring educational spaces that align with a modern approach to learning.

Our Project of the Year award went to Shaw Building Group for their comprehensive refurbishment of The Canberra Hospital’s Medical Imaging Department, skilfully handling numerous technical challenges while having a minimal impact on hospital operations. Built with quality and longevity in mind, this project will provide outstanding benefits for the hospital for years to come, significantly contributing to the health and wellbeing of our city’s residents.

Once again, our Excellence Awards judges faced a challenging task in selecting this year’s winning commercial and civil projects. We extend our heartfelt thanks to them for their time, expertise, and enthusiasm. A huge congratulations to this year’s winners, finalists, and entrants for delivering some incredible projects. Your outstanding achievements fly in the face of the broader challenges our industry faces, and we are exceptionally proud of your accomplishments.

SHAW BUILDING GROUP

The $5.6million refurbishment of the Medical Imaging department at Canberra Hospital was a huge undertaking, exceptionally managed and delivered by Shaw Building Group.

The first phase saw the transformation of an outdoor courtyard into a lead-lined scanning suite, control room, cannula bay, and holding bay. The second phase involved revamping the existing MRI department, replacing the scanner, adding new magnetic and RF shielding, and creating new control rooms, reception area, plant room, and change rooms. They skilfully handled the technical challenges by using a large structural steel landing platform to remove the existing MRI machine and employing a crane lift to deliver the new machine.

PROJECT OF THE YEAR

The $5.6million refurbishment of the Medical Imaging department at Canberra Hospital was a huge undertaking, exceptionally managed and delivered by Shaw Building Group.

Copper faraday cabin and silicone steel magnetic field shielding were used to protect against radio frequencies and magnetic artifacts.

Quality was a top priority, with strict installation and hygiene standards employed throughout the project. Copper faraday cabin and silicone steel magnetic field shielding were used to protect against radio frequencies and magnetic artifacts.

Across both stages of work, Shaw Building Group showed outstanding skill and technical prowess to completely overhaul the department, all with minimal disruption to hospital operations.

Hospital staff praised Shaw for their handling of the project, as well as their ability to accommodate key requests and needs of the hospital at critical points. The end result is a significant improvement to the efficiency of the hospital’s operations, and to the quality of patient care.

CIVIL BRIDGEWORKS

COMPLEX CO.

Pedestrian Bridges

Complex Co. successfully restored function and safety to the pedestrian bridges at Umbagong District Park, improving access to this beautiful heritage area and transforming it for the community to enjoy. The team at Complex Co. worked to replace the deteriorating timber footbridges with steel bridges with minimal disruption to the environment. The bridges were widened to 2.5m to accommodate cyclists and wheelchair users, without impacting sensitive environmental areas. To blend with the natural setting, Complex Co. chose a rusted steel finish for the new bridges, complementing the native grassland’s colours and improving the aesthetics.

CIVIL HYDRAULIC

CORD CIVIL

Cord Civil expertly managed this project to re-naturalise and restore stormwater drains in Calwell, leading to better water quality, improved amenity and ecological benefits. The team oversaw every aspect of the planning, design review, procurement, construction, and close-out phases of the project as part of the broader ACT Healthy Waterways initiative. This project was designed to filter and purify the water as it flowed through Tuggeranong Creek. A significant technical challenge was safeguarding the works and managing stormwater throughout the site.

To address this, Cord Civil installed an Aqua Barrier, a large plastic bladder equipped with internal anti-roll baffles, filled with water, serving as a temporary dam. Cord Civil kept this complex and challenging project on track with clever planning and proactive problem solving. They went the extra mile by engaging an external environmental consultant to keep the project compliant, and successfully managed water flows on the worksite to minimise damage during a period of significant rainfall.

COMPLEX CO.

Sydney & Melbourne Building Laneways Upgrade

The team at Complex Co. are behind the critical stormwater improvements at two of Canberra’s most iconic heritage buildings, the Sydney and Melbourne Buildings. In addition to bringing the drainage system up to modern standards to reduce flood risk, they have also helped improve the safety, beauty and appeal of Verity and Odgers Lanes connecting the two buildings, with new pavements, better lighting and safer pedestrian and vehicle access. They were able to achieve this with minimal disruption to businesses. Following preliminary works, Complex Co. undertook works to lower the 225-millimeter-high pressure watermain, and to construct precast concrete chambers on the downstream side of the network. At the same time, the design for the upstream network was being developed. Showing excellent commitment to environmental best practice, Complex Co. employed innovative strategies to work around the oversized root systems of the 100-plus year-old trees. These improvements mean that the community can now enjoy outdoor dining and events in the new and improved space for decades to come.

SAYS THANK YOU!

Our team is proud to have so many great customers and working relationships with you, the leading builders of Canberra.

Hunter and all the staff at Asset Construction Hire extend to you our deepest thanks for your support in 2024 and for the great years ahead.

BUILT

National Gallery of Australia - LED Lighting Upgrade

Built successfully upgraded all lighting at the National Gallery to LED lighting, enhancing sustainability and helping the Gallery reduce its environmental footprint. LED lights have a profound positive impact on the environment due to their energy efficiency and longevity. They consume significantly less energy compared to traditional incandescent and fluorescent lights, leading to reduced electricity usage and lower greenhouse gas emissions. By selecting Casambi lighting, Built enabled the Gallery to have precise control over lighting levels and schedules, optimising energy usage and reducing costs. In addition, even though much of the existing lighting infrastructure was nearing end of life, Built took a proactive approach to salvage some existing track and luminaires. The Gallery team were then able to donate salvaged track and luminaires to a community organisation, diverting material from landfill while contributing to community initiatives.

LENDLEASE CONSTRUCTION

Lendlease did an outstanding job managing the risks associated with installing the large precast Super T beams for the new gallery spaces at the Australian War Memorial. Through careful analysis, the Lendlease team identified that there would be too much risk involved with using extremely heavy propping towers to put the Super T beams in place. Consulting with relevant stakeholders, Lendlease devised a simplified approach to achieve the required outcome, eliminating the need for risky temporary propping. Through their considered and thoughtful approach, the Lendlease team showed a high level of commitment to safety and risk reduction which has resulted in an excellent outcome for all stakeholders.
