PROJECT OF THE YEAR
CONSTRUCTION CONTROL AND AMALGAMATED PROPERTY GROUP Civic Quarter
This project involved the design and construction of a high-end office building equipped with six levels of split-level basement parking, a business centre, business lounge and café. The building is cleverly designed with a glass façade and minimal columns to maximise on the incredible view overlooking Veterans Park. The building achieves high Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) performance with a 5-star NABERS energy rating and Silver Core and Shell WELL rating. The project was designed with adaptable floor plates to allow for tenant flexibility, as well as a specially designed and tested fireproof wall, to suit this project. The building is equipped with advanced features that make it a very impressive and functional modern office space. The V-columns in the foyer provide functional structural stability as well as adding to the architectural brilliance of the space.
The team’s careful approach to the installation process reduced the safety risks and ensured they delivered a high quality finished product.
The Excellence Awards judges noted the, ‘State of the art monitoring and communication throughout the building’ as particularly impressive features of the building. The team displayed innovative practices by manufacturing and assembling the up to 12m long prefabricated metal risers offsite. The assembly process included mechanical ductwork, chilled and hot water pipework and the incorporation of access platforms to help the rigging team safely install the risers. The team’s careful approach to the installation process reduced the safety risks and ensured they delivered a high quality finished product.

They also created test columns to check that they had the best concrete mix and installation method for the feature V-columns. Every facet of the project shows an exceptional calibre of work and an architecturally brilliant design. The high attention to detail and the commitment to quality, makes this project an exceptional addition to Canberra’s urban landscape.

LFX GROUP AND PELLE ARCHITECTS LFX Group HQ This project utilised high-quality materials to deliver a combined showroom/workspace for the LFX Group. The team used recycled timber and Corten finishes to add warmth to the existing concrete features. The finishes and coatings across the building were carefully chosen to create an incredible finished product, including the flaking volcanic rust and Venetian plaster. The feature staircase was cleverly designed with concealed steel fittings, to create a floating tread effect. The fireplace utilises recycled timber and is framed with a concrete finish which produces a high-quality and consistent overall look.

CIVIL BRIDGEWORKS
GUIDELINE ACT Bridge 4004 The project involved the strengthening of bridge B4004 on the Tuggeranong Parkway, as part of a larger bridge renewal program across the ACT. The work included the construction of four new concrete piers, the tallest reaching just over 9.5m high that was poured in four stages. It was a high-risk project because a significant amount of the works needed to be completed at heights, with the team needing access to the 12m high underside of the bridge. To combat the difficulties accessing the underside of the bridge, the team created and certified custom compact lifting brackets that could be temporarily affixed to the underside of the bridge and a builders wrench attached, to help raise formwork as needed.

WODEN CONTRACTORS Molonglo 3 DN600 Water Supply main This project involved updating the 1.57km long water supply main that travels from Weetangera reservoir down to the new Molonglo Valley development area. This included three separate cut ins to the existing infrastructure, construction of two cast in-situ complex valve chambers and enlisting the services of specialised contractors to complete the highly critical welding activities. The construction team had to carefully consider the environmental factors of the project, as the water main passes through the Pinnacle Nature Reserve. The team worked closely with local nature authorities to ensure that the over 100 bird species, eastern grey kangaroos, echidnas, bearded dragons and over 150 local flora were not harmed throughout the project. CIVIL OTHER
GUIDELINE ACT Curtin ACT Healthy Waterways This project involved two stages of restoring and stabilising the embankment between Cotter Road and McCulloch Street, which involved installing mass block walls, renovating rock mattresses, and stabilising planting. The team cleverly installed custom valves to allow for pumping out of any low points along the job site. The soft centre of the channel presented a challenge because of the initial plan of using heavy concrete agitators. The team overcame this challenge through innovative thinking and scheduling the concrete to be delivered to each site in segments and using a 24 tonne excavator that had tracks that evenly distributed weight. This smart thinking greatly reduced the onsite risks for the team and the project overall. WINNING PROJECTS MAGAZINE

LANDSCAPE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION COMMERCIAL
ABLE LANDSCAPING Mort Street Public Realm Improvements This project is part of the City Renewal project which involved revamping the eastern footpath on Mort Street. This included updating amenities, large format granite paving, new street furniture, street lighting and adjusting the existing urban infrastructure to provide better access for pedestrians, the new office developments and the adjacent taxi rank. The landscaping was carefully considered with the Zelkova Serrata plant chosen because it’s fast growing, and it has an instant impact on the streetscape. The yellow and grey toned bark was chosen for its flaky appearance which reveals tones of orange, brown and pink. A four-metre-long root barrier was installed 1m below the surface, to protect government fibres and communications from root expansion. WINNING PROJECTS MAGAZINE

The project is a joint initiative between the Federal and ACT Governments to protect, improve and increase the long-term water quality and sustainability of ACT waterways. The project involved the construction of 19 unique water quality control systems using three different water quality control methods. One of the key priorities for the project was to reuse material, which included creating the largest bioretention garden in the southern hemisphere from geosynthetic clay liners made out of recycled clay to help retain water. The teams also reused 54,000m3 of onsite topsoil, and the project was awarded the Excellence in Design Rating by the Infrastructure Sustainability Council Australia (ISCA).

LENDLEASE BUILDING ACT Lendlease Building ACT Lendlease Building ACT have undertaken a number of projects across the Canberra Region over the last 12 months, including the Chifley Library Upgrade, Australian Parliament House, Poppy’s Café Carpark Extension and the R5R6 Upgrade to Defence. The projects involve high risk elements including work near complex live services. Lendlease’s Global Minimum Requirements Framework (GMRs), is considered best practice and is currently higher than the industry requirements. They have created custom Flexible and Inclusive Team (FIT) plans across all of their projects, which helps establish clear cultural charters from the beginning of the project. Lendlease Building ACT were the pilot company for the OzHelp Wellbeing Empowerment Program, the program was so successful that it is now being rolled out across Lendlease Australia. DOWNER EDI WORKS Looking in the Mirror
Downer EDI Works have implemented the ‘Looking in the Mirror’ process across their projects to help identify areas of improvement and ensure compliance across the company. The process, which is often used by sporting teams, involves a jobsite being randomly selected and a short video taken of the work being completed. The supervisor then reviews the video with the team before the next shift and problems are identified. The team then discusses the appropriate solutions. It is also a chance for supervisors and managers to identify the safety measures that the team is succeeding at. The process is now incorporated into the everyday communications between the teams and it forms part of the KPI’s when goal setting for middle managers. 54
