Across all projects this year, MBA Members have shown innovative and sustainable thinking by using recycled building materials and considering local flora and fauna in project planning. On the Namarag project, Complex Co, Major Projects Canberra and the Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate, created a restoration area for the critically endangered pink-tail worm lizard. The teams transformed this former bomb disposal facility into a memorable meeting place that honours the history of the Ngunnawal people.

WINNING PROJECTS MAGAZINE | 11
This out of this world project involved the construction of the ANU Physics purpose-built research laboratory building including one of Australia’s largest cleanroom facilities. This project required laser focus with technically complex elements including mechanical services that ensure a cascading positive pressure regime is maintained, using polished stainless-steel tubing continuously welded, heat traced or in coaxial secondary tubing to withstand the toxicity of a number of gases used in this lab and to monitor for any gas leakage.
PROJECT OF THE YEAR
An important part of vibration control was the use of 50mm isolation joints throughout the building structure, to ensure building movement or settlement would not breach the gap.
The outcome of this diligent work, is an extraordinary facility that defies expectations and the bounds of a typical project.

Guideline ACT delivered the Naas Road Bridge which is situated over the Gudgenby river and is used by motorists visiting the stunning Namadgi National Park. The project is an important piece of infrastructure delivered as part of the federally funded Bridge Renewal program. The new bridge spans 32-metres with no piers between abutments, making a clear opening for flood water and debris to pass underneath, unobstructed. The project required a temporary crossing for traffic which was carefully designed, planned and executed, demonstrating Guideline ACT’s management skills while under pressure. The result is a welcomed piece of infrastructure that greatly benefits the local community.

This project involved renewing and upgrading the three 800-metre lanes along Northbourne Avenue and in stage 3 of the project it required the milling and re-sheeting of three 1300-metre southbound lanes. To deliver this project it involved laying over 3,500 tonnes of heavy-duty asphalt, extensive planning and significant traffic management on an avenue that accommodates over 42,000 vehicles a day. Wodens showed excellent consideration for their client’s budget and the environment by reusing 4,100 tonnes of existing onsite material. Through outstanding traffic management and successful recycling of materials, Wodens was able to deliver a roadway with an extended lifespan of 20 years.
