BETTER together
About the Parkinson’s Foundation The Parkinson’s Foundation is working toward a world without Parkinson’s disease. Formed by the merger of the National Parkinson Foundation (NPF) and the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation (PDF) in August 2016, the mission of the Parkinson’s Foundation is to invest in promising scientific research that will end Parkinson’s disease and improve the lives of people living with Parkinson’s and their families through improved treatments, support and the best care.
Message from the CEO I am honored to introduce myself as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Parkinson’s Foundation, an organization with a rich history of serving the community. In August 2016, two legacy organizations, the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation (PDF) and the National Parkinson Foundation (NPF) merged to form the Parkinson’s Foundation. At the time of the merger, the PDF division was headed for more than 20 years by Robin Anthony Elliott. The NPF division was headed by Paul R. Blom, formerly the chair of its Chapter Advisory Council. Mr. Blom, after a brief hiatus, will join the Parkinson’s Foundation Board and Mr. Elliott, the emeritus chief executive officer of Parkinson’s Disease Foundation division, will retire at the end of June 2017. We have a shared purpose — working toward a world without Parkinson’s disease: • B etter Research: We support promising scientific research by investing in individual and collaborative research, as well as an extensive network of research and medical centers in the United States and around the world. • B etter Care: We continue to focus on the care and well-being of people living with Parkinson’s today. • B etter Lives: We will expand our advocacy and community outreach efforts to ensure that the response to this disease matches the urgent need.
BETTER together
We know that this is a pivotal time, one in which the needs of the Parkinson’s community and the potential of science are greater than ever. That’s why we are committed to accelerating the science and care for Parkinson’s on behalf of the millions of people across the globe living with the disease. We look forward to working with you to ensure that people with Parkinson’s and their families have the tools they need to live well with the disease today, and to ending the disease once and for all. We are stronger and better together. Yours in the fight,
John L. Lehr Chief Executive Officer Parkinson’s Foundation

The Foundation’s increased investment in early-career scientists is illustrated through the Stanley Fahn Junior Faculty Awards, named in honor of Ignacio Fernandez Mata, PDF’s longtime Ph.D., and members of the Scientific DirecLARGE-PD Consortium tor. The awards provide young scientists with $300,000 in support over three years for research focused on solving Parkinson’s. Among the awardees is Ignacio Fernandez Mata, Ph.D., Acting Assistant Professor at the University of Washington and a researcher at the Geriatrics Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) at VA Puget Sound Health Care System, whose project, “Parkinson’s Genetic Risk Factors in Latino Populations,” will expand upon genetics research previously funded by the Foundation that has already provided many important clues about the disease. In recent years, dozens of genetic mutations have been identified that either cause Parkinson’s
3
directly or increase a person’s susceptibility to developing the disease. All of these genes have been discovered in populations of European or Asian ancestry. Little is known about their role in Latinos, who carry a mixture of genes from indigenous Americans, Europeans and Africans. In earlier studies, Dr. Mata and colleagues used seed funding provided by the Foundation to create the Latin American Research Consortium on the Genetics of Parkinson’s Disease (LARGEPD), which has identified 2,000 people with Parkinson’s in six South American countries and matched them with 2,000 healthy controls. They will now genetically screen blood samples from these individuals to identify new susceptibility genes in Latinos. In families with many members affected, they will also sequence all known genes that cause Parkinson’s in order to identify new genetic variants that cause the disease. These data will be crucial in understanding the role of genetics in Latinos with Parkinson’s, and will allow Latinos to participate in clinical trials for potential treatments targeted toward individuals with specific genetic variants. Learn more about our investment in research at www.pdf.org/results_funded.
BETTER research
“At the start of my career, the Foundation provided seed funding to create LARGE-PD. The Stanley Fahn Award allows my team to take the research further — to perform the first-ever large-scale genetic study of non-European populations, so we can understand if the same genetic risk factors apply to Latinos and identify new ones to help us better understand the disease for everyone.” Ignacio Fernandez Mata, Ph.D.
Ingrid Pretzer-Aboff, Ph.D., R.N.
The Foundation’s increased investment in care is illustrated through its professional education initiatives, the cornerstone of which is the Edmond J. Safra Visiting Nurse Faculty Program.
Nurses are critical to Parkinson’s care. In light of a growing number of people with Parkinson’s and a shortage of neurologists specializing in the disease, it is even more pressing that nurses be prepared to fight Parkinson’s on the front lines. The Edmond J. Safra Visiting Nurse Faculty Program is designed to fill this gap. The 40-hour program improves nursing care in Parkinson’s disease by training faculty leaders across the United States so they can, in turn, educate nursing students. Since 2009, the program has trained nearly 190
5
nurses who in turn train 18,000 nursing students each year. This program is crucial in preparing the next generation of nurses to care for the growing population of people with Parkinson’s. This is evidenced by the work of program Scholar Ingrid Pretzer-Aboff, Ph.D., R.N., of the University of Delaware, who leveraged her training to create the Parkinson’s Clinic at the University of Delaware Nurse Managed Primary Care Center. This center is staffed by nurse practitioners who — thanks to recommendations from Dr. Pretzer-Aboff — have all undergone training through the Edmond J. Safra Visiting Nurse Faculty Program. The clinic not only provides specialty Parkinson’s care, but also offers the only telemedicine-supported nurse-led Parkinson’s disease clinic in the country. This means that Dr. Pretzer-Aboff and her team of nurses can provide outstanding Parkinson’s care to people who have no specialty clinic close to home. Learn more about our investment in nursing educators at www.pdf.org/edmondjsafranursing.
BETTER care
“As nurses, we can make a significant impact on the lives of people with Parkinson’s, and The Edmond J. Safra Visiting Nurse Faculty Program is ensuring we are prepared to do so. It enhanced the knowledge and confidence of my team as we expanded our clinic and services for people with Parkinson’s disease.” Ingrid Pretzer-Aboff, Ph.D., R.N.
The Foundation’s increased investment in improving lives is illustrated through its Women and Parkinson’s Initiative, the first national coordinated Robin Morgan effort to improve the health and well-being of women with Parkinson’s disease. It all started with an innocent question, insists Robin Morgan, a Research Advocate. She was attending one of the Foundation’s Parkinson’s Advocates in Research Learning Institutes when she asked, “How do we know that Parkinson’s is primarily a men’s disease?” That question and the divergent responses inspired Morgan and several other women at the session to work with the Foundation to launch the Women and PD Initiative. As with many other chronic diseases, there is clear evidence that in Parkinson’s, women and men experience differences in disease presentation, symptom severity and medication response. For example, women are underrepresented in clinical research studies, and experience a longer duration of time than men between the onset of
7
Parkinson’s and the first time they see a neurologist specializing in movement disorders. Women with Parkinson’s may be more prone to depression and have more difficulty than men with daily activities, such as walking and getting dressed. This is to say nothing of the societal norms that are challenged as women living with Parkinson’s struggle to fulfill traditional roles as partners, mothers and daughters of aging parents. There has been little effort to understand these differences, despite the fact that doing so could benefit both women and men. This need became clear when the Foundation surveyed women with Parkinson’s and 72 percent reported that women have unique needs, but 91 percent said they have never received resources related to those needs. In September 2016, more than 25 inspiring women joined the Foundation in launching the Women and PD Initiative, with a conference in New Jersey. These women, all living with Parkinson’s, learned from experts in the fields of neurology, psychology and physical therapy about the unmet needs of women in Parkinson’s. These women are now organizing similar events for women in their local communities. Learn more about the Women and PD Initiative at www.pdf.org/womenpd.
BETTER lives
“We have begun investigating ways to understand and end inequalities in research and treatment, and to better meet the needs of women. The Women and PD Initiative is a first step toward connecting the power of our vision, energy and resolve to change this situation. Robin Morgan
