Section of the Year ! Hard Work Pays Off - Section of the Year for MBCA|KC Left to Right: Bob Poduch, Board Member; John Ryan, Past President and Jeff Klepac, President, display the Section of the Year banner and plaque presented to the KC Section by the Mercedes-Benz Club of America.
A year’s worth of blood, sweat, planning and good times were recognized and rewarded last month, as our Kansas City Section was chosen as Mercedes-Benz Club of America’s Section of the Year. The announcement was made at the closing banquet of MBCA’s Fall Board Meeting at the esteemed Kemp Auto Museum in St. Louis, Missouri. Scott Suits, Southeastern Regional Director and National Awards Chairman, along with MBCA’s National President, Rodger Van Ness, presented the award to Kansas City Section President Jeff Klepac and Past MBCA |KC Presidents, John Ryan and Bob Poduch. Section of the Year is the top honor awarded each year by MBCA. The recipient is selected from the eighty-one local MBCA sections across the USA and Canada. Sections submit their application in July of each year, recapping the previous year’s accomplishments in the areas of Membership Recruitment and Retention, Newsletter and Section Communications, Social Events, Section and Cosponsored Section Events, Auto Related Events, Event Planning, Membership Promotion, Charity Events, and Fiscal Responsibility. The awards committee reviews the applications and renders a decision at the Fall MBCA National Board Meeting. John Ryan, Past President of our section proclaimed, “2009 was a great year for MBCA|KC. It’s good to know that our national organization has seen the things we’ve known for some time now; that Kansas City IS one of the shining stars of MBCA”!
Ryan also recognized the hard work of the many folks that contributed to the events that made this honor possible. Past President Bob Poduch added, “it’s a great honor made possible by the efforts of countless members and volunteers”. When asked of what he thought this award meant to the section, President Jeff Klepac shared, “I think it’s the recognition of the effort, dedication and teamwork of many KC Section members; a cooperative effort, for sure!” 2009 indeed, was a banner year for the Kansas City Section. The section boasted an 11.5 % growth in Membership and an award winning newsletter publication, der Benz! The section hosted nearly forty social, technical and autorelated events in 2009. MBCA|KC made generous efforts in support of their two designated charities, UPLIFT Inc., and McPherson College. And, the Mid-America Caravan, KC Section’s first National MBCA event, has to be recognized as the jewel of the Section of the Year crown. Please note that in 2010, more activities have been added, and there’s even more ways to enjoy your MBCA|KC membership. Your Officers and Board of Directors continue to work to bring fun and exciting ways for you to enjoy your Mercedes-Benz experience. Won’t you please join us soon, and share this amazing honor? You’ll soon discover why Kansas City Section IS Mercedes-Benz Club of America’s Section of the Year!

Update on Uplift at November Breakfast Meeting by Kevin Arburn
The speaker for the November breakfast meeting was Joe Kordalski, the Vice President of Uplift Organization, Inc., a Kansas City-based charitable organization that is dedicated to assisting the homeless in the metro area. Joe addressed a group of 34 members and guests to explain how they achieve their goal: “…to deliver to the homeless those basic human needs, care and compassion that are not usually received from other organizations.” Uplift Organization Inc. was founded in 1990 by Frank Fiorini, who serves as President of an all-volunteer organization that provides basic needs to those homeless individuals who for whatever reason are not able to take advantage of the more traditional, shelter-based charities. They operate a fleet of three Mercedes Sprinter vans that travel designated routes through the city, seeking out groups of the homeless to provide a modest meal, basic clothing items, personal hygiene supplies, etc., three nights a week. We were able to collect several large bags of clothing, including winter gear such as coats, stocking caps, ear muffs and scarves, as well as a good supply of socks and bottled water. These items were taken by Mr. Kordalski to Uplift headquarters that morning.
Joe Kordalski, (right) VP of Uplift Organization Inc. has the attention of his audience at the November breakfast. Mr Kordalski talked about the operation of the Uplift Organization. The needs of Uplift are great: their annual budget approaches $50,000 and they are not funded by federal, state or local government grants or sponsored by other organizations and/or agencies. Uplift survives by donations and the personal commitment of their volunteers to feed and clothe the area’s homeless. Mr. Kordalski explained that it is possible to donate via the United Way if a person is making contributions through their employer’s United Way effort, and also that it’s possible to make cash contributions directly to Uplift through their own website at www.uplift.org. The website lists items that are always needed, such as clothing, canned goods, hygiene items and miscellaneous supplies. VP Kevin Arburn reminded those present that any items for Uplift can be dropped off at Aristocrat Motors, as service manager Jim Schmidt is an avid supporter and volunteer. All members are encouraged to visit the Uplift website for more information. Uplift literature was made available at the meeting and will also be available at subsequent breakfast meetings.

November First Sunday Drive by Kevin Arburn
The great luck that we’ve had for most of the drives this year was with the Kansas City Section again on Sunday November 7th, as we had one spectacular, albeit windy, day for the Sunday Drive. Drive Master Phil King was greeted with a near record number of cars and participants at the designated meet point at 119th & Roe in Overland Park. There was another record of sorts: eight of the vehicles were convertibles or roadsters! We started out just a little after noon, heading for Baldwin City, Kansas. Phil planned an efficient but very scenic route south down Alternate 69 Highway to 199th street, then west to Old Highway 56 and on to our ultimate destination. The abundant sunshine and the fall colors made the drive even more enjoyable, as we had plenty of open road and a moderate amount of traffic. Even with the stiff winds and the temperature in the low 50’s, several of us were in “top down” mode to enjoy one more day of open car running. We’ve had a long run of good weather.
Participants arrive in Baldwin City after a sunny drive. Photo by Kevin Arburn
has traditional sandwiches, soups, salads, but also BYO (build your own) burgers, steaks, salmon, gyros, with eclectic sauces and sides. The decor is an equally eclectic mix of auction, antique, and re-used items. All of the furniture and the aforementioned decor is for sale as well! It was a very homey, very comfortable place to settle in for lunch – and settle we did. We invaded with a crew of about 25, filling two of their dining areas and spilling over into a very cozy sitting area. Even though we overwhelmed the kitchen, everyone had a great lunch -- the food was more than worth the trip. The Melange Apron is a family friendly restaurant complete Four Stars for the Melange Apron - 519 Ames St., Baldwin with a playroom for kids and an outdoor patio. The menu City, KS 66006 - (785) 594-0519 www.melangeapron.com After a minimal amount of stop signs, several long stretches of road and an adequate amount of twists and turns, we came to Baldwin City after about 50 minutes of driving. Our destination was “The Melange Apron”, a unique and really enjoyable restaurant located right on the main highway, near the campus of Baker University. Phil’s son is a Baker student, and he thought this restaurant would make for an interesting stop. He was right.
Several of us lingered in the parking lot talking about the great day; some “put the top up” for the ride home, as the sun was starting to go down a little earlier, thanks to the return of Standard Time that morning. The adjustment from Daylight Savings is always hard – it really cuts into prime drive time! As the last of us were getting ready to leave, we saw a sight that was definitely unexpected: a red 380SL cruised by; the driver and passenger looking wide-eyed at the lineup of SL’s parked near the street. We waved, they stopped, and the two women with the 380SL came over to meet us and look over our cars for a while. I had a spare MBCA brochure with me, so we did a little recruiting for the club while we were talking. You never know. The dining rooms at the Mélange Apron in Baldwin City have a nice, homey feel about them. Photo by Kevin Arburn
Kudos to Phil King and the Melange Apron for creating one of the best Sunday Drives to date. In November, no less.

Keep your Mercedes-Benz running its best with Aristocrat Motors everyday low prices. Synthetic oil change
Oil is the very life-blood of your Mercedes-Benz engine, and Mobil 1 with SuperSyn Technology helps extend engine life with exceptional lubricating properties. Synthetic oil also provides unequalled protection at both high and low temperature extremes. It’s the factory fill for Mercedes-Benz AMG, and required for vehicles with Flexible Service Systems (FSS or FSS PLUS). Synthetic oils even improve your vehicle’s fuel economy due to reduced internal friction. Your oil filter screens out minute contaminants that are normal by products of combustion and engine wear. Its capacity to do so, however, is not unlimited, and it must be changed before it becomes ineffective. Your Aristocrat Motors technician will drain your old oil, replace the oil filter, replenish the engine with Mobil 1 fully synthetic motor oil and check for leaks. Used engine oil and filters are disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner. Includes a 27-point inspection.

Cooling system service (every 3 years)
Your service manual will tell you that the use of aluminum components in Mercedes-Benz engines requires an anticorrosive coolant specifically formulated to protect those parts. And aluminum in the radiator makes it lighter with better heat transfer characteristics and more environmentally friendly (no lead solder). To prevent severe damage requires coolant of the correct formulation, quantity, and condition. The glycols used in the coolant don’t wear out but the vital additives that prevent corrosion do. Visual checks of the coolant cannot detect this critical loss. Your Aristocrat Motors technician will inspect the fan, belts, and hoses; pressure test the coolant system and cap; drain depleted coolant and refill the system including the engine block and heater core; and replenish the system with Mercedes-Benz approved coolant for protection down to 25 degrees F below zero.
$74.95
Brake pad replacement
It would be difficult to overstate the importance of good brakes in keeping you and your passengers safe on the highway. The front brakes accomplish approximately 70 percent of the work in stopping your vehicle and they are physically larger to be able to meet that challenge. The rear brakes are unique because they incorporate the parking brake function. All are subjected to very high temperatures generated from the friction of the brake pads rubbing on the brake discs to stop the vehicle. The brake dust that can accumulate on the wheels in normal service is evidence of the ever-so-slight wear that occurs with each brake application. Your Aristocrat Motors technician will remove worn brake pads, inspect the discs for condition and wear, inspect calipers and lines, and top off the brake fluid. Front brakes from Rear brakes from
Brake fluid flush (every 2 years)
Brake fluid leads a demanding life in a high-performance automobile and asks for very little in return. Just a few pints are tasked with transmitting the force to haul a 3,000- to 6,500-pound Mercedes down to a dead stop from Autobahn speeds. Your brake calipers can reach temperatures of several hundred degrees in severe service and the fluid is directly exposed to this fierce heat. Modern brake fluids are hygroscopic, meaning they actually attract moisture, which can lead to corrosion and reduced braking performance. In time they become contaminated and can fail to protect sensitive components such as brake boosters and ABS. Your Aristocrat Motors technician will flush contaminated fluids, clean the reservoir, install fresh Mercedes-Benz DOT 4 Plus-spec fluid, and bleed and inspect the entire system.

StarTrek to StarFest 2010 by Jeff Klepac & Gary Anderson
Early this year, Denise & I planned to drive to StarFest, a biannual National event held by the Mercedes-Benz Club of America. The site for this year’s StarFest was historic Winchester, Virginia. While gathering details about the event, I happened onto information about an interesting ‘side trip’ that would eventually lead us to StarFest. The route, for us anyway, would not be the routine Kansas to Virginia – ‘Go East Young Man – Go East’, but rather take us into the deep south through some beautiful places with breathtaking scenery. Gary Anderson, STAR editor, who along with his wife Genie also enjoyed this drive, described it in this manner. “Members drove from as far as Kansas and Florida and even flew in from California to join Jim Roberts and members of the Alabama and Peachtree sections in Birmingham, Alabama, for a 1200 mile tour to StarFest. Highlights included Little River Canyon, the Tail of the Dragon, Biltmore House, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and Monticello. We started with a tour of the Mercedes-Benz museum and factory on Monday morning, then got on the road after lunch in their cafeteria.
Jeff & Denise Klepac approach the Fryingpan Tunnel along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Photo by Jeff Klepac Vanderbilts in 1895, and the largest private home ever built in the United States. Wednesday was a full day of driving, but what driving! Along the Blue Ridge Parkway, with mile after mile of gentle curves through wooded avenues, broken by views to the west and the east from the top of the spine of the Appalachian Mountains.
Our first scenic drive was along the rim of the Little River Canyon, the deepest canyon east of the Grand Canyon before we arrived in Sweetwater, Tennessee.
Evening finally found us in Charlottesville, Virginia, where on Thursday morning we toured Thomas Jefferson’s home at Monticello then had dinner (the mid-day meal) in Michy’s Tavern nearby, where we dined on early colonial fare, served by ladies in bonnets and gentlemen in breeches and hose.
On the second day, our group divided, with one intrepid crew heading for the fabled Tail of the Dragon followed by a visit to Silver Star Restorations before arriving in Asheville, North Carolina.
From there a choice of the Skyway or the interstate took us into Winchester, Virginia, where Mercedes-Benz automobiles were already filling the parking lot in anticipation of StarFest, due to start on Friday.
A smaller group took the fast route to Asheville in order to spend the afternoon at The Biltmore, built by one of the
As Gary said, this trip was full of visits to beautiful sites. I also have to mention the wonderful new friends we made along the journey. While it was quite a few additional miles out of the way for us, it was worth every one! Denise & I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. A huge ‘Thank You’ to Dr. Jim Roberts, President of the Alabama section for all of his effort to plan and organize this drive.

If perhaps your schedule wouldn’t allow you to join in this time, let me encourage you to look ahead and plan to attend the next Mercedes-Benz club event. Whether it’s a sectional, regional, or national event, I’m sure it will be one to remember.
