What was intended to be the inagural First Sunday Drive back in January of 2010 became the drive that concluded the first year of this popular new monthly MBCA|KC event. If you remember correctly, that first First Sunday brought a snow storm that blanketed the Kansas City area. Those that braved the elements to try this new event, quickly opted to “glove box” John Ryan’s prepared drive, and instead dine at the nearby Bravo Italian Bistro. Those drive directions rode around in JR’s glove box until December 5th, the final drive of 2010. December’s weather was very near January’s temperatures, but that pesky white stuff was absent, as our group traveled to Parkville, Missouri (the long way) following a route on the western edge of town via K-7 Highway. The group passed through the historic towns of Bonner Springs, Basehor, Lansing and Leavenworth, Kansas before crossing the Mighty Mo and heading South to Parkville. Participants shopped the quaint Downtown Parkvillle boutiques that were draped in their holiday decor, and some even picked up unique Christmas gifts while there. A short excursion to nearby Riverside, Missouri concluded the drive at the locally renouned Corner Cafe. Good ol’ “down home eatin” was the specialty fare, as well as homemade pies like Grandma used to make. The day was a delighful end to our first year of the First Sunday Drive. It was announced that the First Sunday Drive was so well attended, that it will continue on for 2011. Join us, won’t you, for a great drive with your Benz Friends.

President’s Message By Jeff Klepac
Hello Friends… It’s officially 2011 now and I’m still getting adjusted to both saying and writing the New Year in all my communication. The Kansas City Section is off to a grand start, having just finished our Winter Gala on January 8th. Once again we held this annual event at the Homestead Country Club, in Prairie Village, KS. About sixty guests attended this elegant evening as we celebrated a look back over what was accomplished during 2010 and presented awards to recognize both combined and individual efforts of many KC Section members. We were honored to have special guests in attendance at the Winter Gala. Rodger Van Ness and his wife Colleen drove in from the St. Louis area. Rodger is the current National President of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America. Also, Bill Denton and his wife Jeannie made the trek all the way from the Chicago area. Bill is the Regional Director for the Midwest Region of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America. Their attendance at our event sent a strong message of support for the Kansas City Section, and we were certainly appreciative of their presence at our first social event of the year. We have many events planned for 2011 and continue to work on our activity matrix, updating it each month with fun and exciting events for you to enjoy. Read about them

of salad, corned beef and cabbage, grilled chicken, roasted potatoes, mixed vegetables, rolls, bread pudding and cobbler will be served at 7 PM. A cocktail hour with a cash bar will begin at 6 PM. Reserve your place by sending a check for $28 per person to Joyce Smith, 4344 W. 124th Terr., Leawood, KS 66209. Credit cards also welcome.
Gemutlichkeit An invitation from the Western Reserve Section by Joyce Smith
Dear Kansas City Section Friends, The Western Reserve Section of Ohio invites you to our Gemutlichkeit, an MBCA national event to be held May 21-24 in Mansfield, Ohio. We had such fun at your Mid America Caravan, and would enjoy having members of your section share that same kind of fun with us. We’ll be using the well-known Mid Ohio Motor Sports Car Track for time trials and the acceleration run. We’ll also be having defensive driving, an autocross, rallye, banquets (one German), an Amish tour and much more. There will be something for everyone to do. Our host hotel is the renovated Holiday Inn in downtown Mansfield at $89 a night including breakfast. (Phone 1-419-525-6000). Our
Concours d’Elegance will be nearby at a beautiful location on Saturday, May 21, but we’re allowing some extra time in the morning for cleaning. And our reception that evening will be at the Historic Mansfield Carrousel and will include unlimited rides on the carrousel. Please join us and bring some friends! We can’t wait to see you. For information, call Sue Morrison 330-673-7885 or email gobenzing@aol. com . Or information will be kept current on our website, www.benzclub.org. We look forward to seeing you in Ohio in May! Unique Custom Crafted Trophies Will Suit the Automotive Achievements of KC Section Members While enjoying the weekend last year at McPherson College I was presented a trophy for participation in the Concours d’ Elegance. The trophy was crafted by students using auto engine and transmission parts. The award was such a unique and individual keepsake that we had more trophies made for future presentations to those KC Section Members lucky enough to earn such honors. The three trophies, painted gold for first place, silver for second place and bronze for third place, were presented to the top three finishers in last years’ ‘Funcours’ after the Autocross and Defensive Driving sessions. It was suggested that the awards be “traveling trophies” and were put on display at the Winter Gala for others to see what could be theirs for a year after the 2011 ‘Funcours’.
Above: On display at the Winter Gala, crafted from actual engine and drive train components, these trophies were presented to the top three finishers in the ‘Funcours’ last summer. The “traveling trophies” will be presented to next years winners, too.
Smart-Phone Users,
Here’s a quick and easy way to reach our Kansas City Section Website. Just point the camera to this image, click it and the website will come uo on your browser. Try it.
Plan for an Early Departure for the May Sunday Drive For May’s First Sunday Drive, we’ll journey to the Shatto Milk Company in Osborn, MO. This will be a unique opportunity to tour a working dairy and see the milk production from start to finish. They have agreed to give the KC Section a private tour on Sunday, May 1st. Now, since the workers (actually, the cows) are on
a strict schedule, we’ll have to leave earlier than our normal time. That day we’ll need to leave the bank (119th & Roe) at 8:30am so we’ll have plenty of time to ‘drive & arrive’ when our tour starts at 10:30am. I’m sure this will be quite an educational visit, so you might want to invite a future Mercedes-Benz driver (young child or grandchild) to come along with us.
NTB Offers Discount to KCMBCA Members NTB National Tire & Battery is offering a discount for KCMBCA members. Our friend, Brandon Ebert, the manager at the 119th & Metcalf store arranged for that generous discount for our members. Keep your Mercedes-Benz running its best with Aristocrat Motors everyday low prices. Synthetic oil change
Oil is the very life-blood of your Mercedes-Benz engine, and Mobil 1 with SuperSyn Technology helps extend engine life with exceptional lubricating properties. Synthetic oil also provides unequalled protection at both high and low temperature extremes. It’s the factory fill for Mercedes-Benz AMG, and required for vehicles with Flexible Service Systems (FSS or FSS PLUS). Synthetic oils even improve your vehicle’s fuel economy due to reduced internal friction. Your oil filter screens out minute contaminants that are normal by products of combustion and engine wear. Its capacity to do so, however, is not unlimited, and it must be changed before it becomes ineffective. Your Aristocrat Motors technician will drain your old oil, replace the oil filter, replenish the engine with Mobil 1 fully synthetic motor oil and check for leaks. Used engine oil and filters are disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner. Includes a 27-point inspection.
$79.95
Cooling system service (every 3 years)
Your service manual will tell you that the use of aluminum components in Mercedes-Benz engines requires an anticorrosive coolant specifically formulated to protect those parts. And aluminum in the radiator makes it lighter with better heat transfer characteristics and more environmentally friendly (no lead solder). To prevent severe damage requires coolant of the correct formulation, quantity, and condition. The glycols used in the coolant don’t wear out but the vital additives that prevent corrosion do. Visual checks of the coolant cannot detect this critical loss. Your Aristocrat Motors technician will inspect the fan, belts, and hoses; pressure test the coolant system and cap; drain depleted coolant and refill the system including the engine block and heater core; and replenish the system with Mercedes-Benz approved coolant for protection down to 25 degrees F below zero.
Brake pad replacement
$74.95
It would be difficult to overstate the importance of good brakes in keeping you and your passengers safe on the highway. The front brakes accomplish approximately 70 percent of the work in stopping your vehicle and they are physically larger to be able to meet that challenge. The rear brakes are unique because they incorporate the parking brake function. All are subjected to very high temperatures generated from the friction of the brake pads rubbing on the brake discs to stop the vehicle. The brake dust that can accumulate on the wheels in normal service is evidence of the ever-so-slight wear that occurs with each brake application. Your Aristocrat Motors technician will remove worn brake pads, inspect the discs for condition and wear, inspect calipers and lines, and top off the brake fluid. Front brakes from Rear brakes from
$240.00 $226.00
Brake fluid flush (every 2 years)
Brake fluid leads a demanding life in a high-performance automobile and asks for very little in return. Just a few pints are tasked with transmitting the force to haul a 3,000- to 6,500-pound Mercedes down to a dead stop from Autobahn speeds. Your brake calipers can reach temperatures of several hundred degrees in severe service and the fluid is directly exposed to this fierce heat. Modern brake fluids are hygroscopic, meaning they actually attract moisture, which can lead to corrosion and reduced braking performance. In time they become contaminated and can fail to protect sensitive components such as brake boosters and ABS. Your Aristocrat Motors technician will flush contaminated fluids, clean the reservoir, install fresh Mercedes-Benz DOT 4 Plus-spec fluid, and bleed and inspect the entire system.

Mercedes-Benz Sales Increased 18% in 2010 by Donna Boland, MBUSA News Media
MONTVALE, N.J. – Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) reported December sales of 21,469 vehicles, its highest monthly volume of the year, bringing the company’s 2010 total to 225,007, an increase of 18% over 2009. Ernst Lieb, president and CEO of MBUSA said: “Despite the challenges of a slow recovery, we see good indicators in terms of our sales volume throughout the model range. This is certainly due in large part to the customer-directed efforts we’ve undertaken here at MBUSA over the past few years and the extraordinary commitment of our retail network to provide an unmatched ownership experience. As virtually all third-party indicators show, customers are confident about the Mercedes-Benz brand and we think that will translate to even stronger momentum going forward.” The 9th generation E-Class was the volume leader for both the month and year, with December sales of 5,638, bringing its annual volume to 60,922 – a 41.4 % increase
over its volume in 2009. The C-Class – the gateway to the Mercedes-Benz brand for younger and first-time MercedesBenz buyers – followed with monthly sales of 4,924 and a yearly total of 58,785, a 12.1 % increase over last. Rounding out the top three volume lines was the popular M-Class SUV which posted monthly sales of 3,783 bringing its annual volume to 29,698, a 15.1 % increase over last year. Sales at the high end continued strong for 2010 with the commanding G-Class up 38.8 % for the year and the flagship S-Class sedan up 21.5 %. The company sold 48 of its top-of-the-line supercar - the SLS AMG – in December, bringing its annual total to 499. Separately, through the Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned (MBCPO) program, MBUSA sold 6,338 vehicles in December, up 24.3 % for the month, bringing the annual total to 80,698, up 12.3 % over 2009.
