Hello friends! While spring is officially here according to the calendar, I don’t think old man winter is cooperating. Anyway, I certainly hope things warm up soon. Our winter months have kept us busy with indoor events and what your board of directors has in store for both spring and summer will give you ample opportunities to participate with your club. Be sure to mark your calendar for our First Sunday Drive on May 1st, as we travel to the Shatto Dairy. Consider bringing along a young guest (future M-B driver) to enjoy the tour with you. Remember, we’ll be leaving at 8:30am on that Sunday. Hope to see you there! As for other club business, the National Business Office, MBCA, in Colorado Springs recently advised of new requirements for certain club Jeff Klepac events that you need to be aware of. MBCA recently changed insurance providers, so as your section President, I had to send the NBO a form in advance listing all upcoming events. The events must fit into one of three categories: • Group A (e.g. Social) • Group B (e.g. Sunday Drives) and • Group C (e.g. Track Events) Group B & C events require that each of us sign a “Release of Liability” form prior to participating. Group C events also require that the section request an insurance certificate from the NBO at least 30 days in advance. For every event, except Group A events, a ‘Terms of Participation’ agreement must be included in the event registration materials but does not have to be signed. Further, if at any event an incident occurs that might result in a claim being filed, the section must submit an incident reporting form to the NBO within 24 hours of the incident. Yes, this new requirement will entail some minor adjustments and accommodations. However, I’m sure you can see it’s necessary and will not keep us from the pleasure of getting together to have fun, to exercise our magnificent Mercedes-Benz vehicles, and to see the attractions of this wondrous area as we proceed safely on the road ahead. Start ‘em up, Let’s go! Jeff Klepac President | Mercedes-Benz Club of America | Kansas City Section

ML Proves Blizzard-Worthy by Kevin Arburn

This most recent snow storm really drove home the value of having an ML. I’ve owned this 2003 ML 320 for almost a year now, and the performance in the snow has been great. During the first two big snow falls this season, nothing seemed to slow it down, other than having to drive appropriately for the conditions. Having a 4WD vehicle does not make you immortal, but with a little common sense it will take you almost anywhere. The ML really earned it’s keep during the two day ordeal this first week of February, when the record snowfall / blizzard came to the region. Besides using it to transport the snow blower to my son’s house to dig them out, I had to use it for a rescue mission of sorts during the middle of the blizzard on Tuesday afternoon [February 1st]. Our daughter was working her shift in the ICU at St. Lukes South Hospital on Tuesday. Her husband wisely decided to work from home, as I was also doing that day. He had taken their two little ones to day care in the morning, but by mid-afternoon he found himself snowed in. No one really could have anticipated the rate of snow fall, and they live in western Shawnee where large drifts are a problem even with a normal snow. Our daughter had taken their Jeep 4WD that he normally drives; leaving him with a Honda Odyssey. He could not navigate the deep snow in the street and was lucky to get the car back into the driveway. The grand-kids were stranded at day care, so he called me. I had just put the snow blower away, so I warmed up the ML and bundled up for the trip. From our place near 95th & Antioch, it’s a half-hour trip to their place...on a dry day. I flipped a coin and decided to try the highway, thinking that the snow crews always do them first. The ramp onto Alternate 69 south was like a bobsled run - packed with deep snow and just two ruts to drive in. Merging was fairly easy, since there were just three other cars within a hundred yards. I turned west onto I435 to swing around west and north to Shawnee Mission Parkway, and the whole highway was 6 - 8” deep with snow. Visibility was 50 yards at best. Lanes were nonexistent, defined only by which set of ruts that you wanted to drive within. I managed to stay around 30 mph for several miles, until I came up behind a Deffenbaugh garbage truck on the northbound leg of I-435. A quick cluster of cars developed, and it was heavy braking for all – there was no where to go. Dropping down to 20 mph turned out to be a good idea, as I started to see vehicles that had slid/driven off the road. It was hard to tell just where the road was. The challenge was to keep a safe interval for the conditions, yet keep the tail lights ahead in sight for

reference. This was the scariest time: the visibility was nil, and when the tail lights ahead would disappear I’d have an instant but minor panic attack. Not knowing just where I was in relation to the vehicle ahead and to either side of the highway was unnerving. Every time the lights ahead would fade, I would go cold and await an impact that luckily never came. I made it off I-435 and onto the uphill, circular exit ramp to Shawnee Mission Parkway. I was relieved to be off of the interstate, but Shawnee Mission Parkway west of I-435 was worse - down to a single undefined lane. By the time I reached our daughter’s place, the roads had not been plowed at all, and I had to guess where the road was when turning into their subdivision. I picked up my son in law and we headed out to the day care center. The office park where the center is located was the worst yet: ontop of a hill with the wind whipping the snow everywhere. We drove through drifts that were close to two feet and made the turn into and up the driveway to the center. The only point of reference was the top of a fire hydrant – my son in law directed me to steer to the right of it. Good thing.... I had planned to go left. Once inside. the little ones were excited to see us - as were the employees at the center.... we were the last pick up of the day! The trip back to their house was still pretty harrowing, as we were making our own road most of the way. With snow this deep, every day traffic rules get bent – it there was no cross traffic at a stop sign, we went straight through. Keep moving. I dropped off my passengers and decided that I’d make the return trip via the city streets and leave I-435 to the snow plows. Good decision. Shawnee Mission Parkway was still one lane, but passable. I made it to Quivira and my luck continued to hold out: it had been recently plowed. The rest of the way home was still snow packed and littered with stuck, stalled and abandoned cars, but at least it was not quite the white-knuckle, halfblind ride of I-435. It just amazed me how I could just drive around obstacles and through the deepest of the snow. Maybe it was the situation – I was on a mission and the terrible conditions made my hyper-aware of the surroundings. The road crews were out doing the impossible, which made getting around possible during the blizzard conditions. It was also reassuring that I had one of the safest SUV’s available. I saw a lot of banged-up and high-centered cars on the run to Shawnee and back. This had been one of those “failure is not an option” situations, and I can’t say enough about how well the ML performed. ;) The best part besides getting home safely?

Gemutlichkeit 2011

Concours – Track – Rallye Featuring the…

SPORTLEICHT

Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts from across the country will be gathering in Mansfield, Ohio this May for Gemutlichkeit 2011, an MBCA National Event, with four days of fun and action, plus track and driving events. It all begins on Saturday May 21 with the Concours d’Elegance celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Automobile and also honoring all six generations of the SL. Driving events begin on Sunday, May 22 with defensive driving practice, autocross, and a road rallye. Our evening concludes with the Concours Banquet. On Monday and Tuesday, May 23 and 24, attend the MBCA performance driving school at the world-famous Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. You may choose to participate in the time trials and acceleration runs in your favorite Mercedes-Benz, new or old. Never driven on a track before? No problem – our experienced MBCA instructors will be with you every step of the way. If you’ve never been to an MBCA National Event, Gemutlichkeit 2011 is the one to attend, with dynamic and interesting activities that appeal to both veterans and first-timers alike. We expect a great turnout of SLs and a diverse cross-section of Mercedes-Benz models taking part in the Concours d’Elegance, with both judged and display-only classes (all years and models, including yours). In addition, there is the MBCA Road Rallye, covering the back roads and rolling hills of Ohio farm country. Many other gatherings, receptions, local tours and activities ensure time to mingle with friends and enjoy the sites. Your hosts are the Western Reserve Section which celebrates their 50th anniversary this year. And what about that word? “Gemutlichkeit” is the name of one of the oldest MBCA National Events, with a history dating back to 1958. The word was used to describe those early events, roughly translated from German as “good times with friends”. And so it has been ever since. For registration and more information go to: http://benzclub.org/info/gemutlichkeit-2011/gemutlichkeit-2011-registration/ _____________________________________________________________

2011 Greater Kansas City International Auto Show March 5-6, 2011 by Jeff Klepac

The annual Kansas City Auto Show was packed with families checking out all of the new models. Your club was well represented, with volunteers from the KC section talking to many current and future Mercedes-Benz owners about the wide array of benefits from membership in the Mercedes-Benz Club of America. I would like to personally thank Aristocrat Motors and Mercedes-Benz of Kansas City for allowing us table space among their new car exhibits. This type of cooperation displays a high level of support for our section and we truly appreciate it. Bob Del Popolo (left) and Bob Poduch, long time active members of the KC Section during their turn manning the clubs information desk in the Mercedes-Benz display area.

Special St. Patrick’s Spaßnacht – March 16, 2011 by Jeff Klepac Over thirty KC Section members and guests attended our St. Patrick’s celebration this year, as we enjoyed an Irish feast at O’Neill’s restaurant. Our own Irishman, John Ryan, recounted an old Irish story of his great grandfather. Although historic, somehow I thought parts of his story were filled with a tale of ‘blarney’.

The room was filled with spirited KC Section members and friends at O’Neill’s in Leawood.

Spectacular Colorado Mountain Roads & Scenery Star Trails 2011 You are invited to participate in Star Trails 2011, a very special driving event in Ouray, Colorado in August 2011. The Pikes Peak Section, based in Colorado Springs, is the host for this national special event. Nestled in the majestic San Juan Range of the Rocky Mountains, Ouray is known as the Switzerland of America and is a popular destination for many outdoor activities. This is a unique MBCA driving event that showcases the off-highway capabilities and versatility of the Mercedes-Benz M- and G-Class vehicles. We will have guided off-road excursions over national and state forest roads, for every level of expertise. From never-left-the-pavement-before to experienced 4-wheelers, you’ll find a mountain drive for you. You’ll venture over high mountain passes, following trails carved first by miners and then by railroads, in their quest for gold. You’ll see ghost towns and hidden lakes and the stark landscape above the treeline. You’ll experience firsthand the difficulty and the grandeur the early settlers faced and you’ll come away

with a new appreciation for the term “Pikes Peak or Bust.” Most of all though, you’ll appreciate the capabilities of your Mercedes-Benz vehicle. For those who prefer to stick to the more civilized paved roadways, we will have a whole range of activities for you too. We’ve got daily scenic drives including sightseeing trips to some of the many natural wonders in the area - the Black Canyon of the Gunnison and the San Juan Scenic Byway are just two examples. We’ve identified off-the-wall places to go and interesting things to do to make your stay in Colorado one you will never forget. Visit http://startrails.mbca.org/ for more information.

Date: Wed, 08/17/2011 - 12:00pm - Sun, 08/21/2011 - 12:00pm Location: Ouray, Colorado Contact: Charlie Bennett 719.576.9737

Plan for an Early Departure for the May Sunday Drive For May’s First Sunday Drive, we’ll journey to the Shatto Milk Company in Osborn, MO. This will be a unique opportunity to tour a working dairy and see the milk production from start to finish. They have agreed to give the KC Section a private tour on Sunday, May 1st. Now, since the workers (actually, the cows) are on

a strict schedule, we’ll have to leave earlier than our normal time. That day we’ll need to leave the bank (119th & Roe) at 8:30am so we’ll have plenty of time to ‘drive & arrive’ when our tour starts at 10:30am. I’m sure this will be quite an educational visit, so you might want to invite a future Mercedes-Benz driver (young child or grandchild) to come along with us.

NTB Offers Discount to KCMBCA Members NTB National Tire & Battery is offering a discount for KCMBCA members. Our friend, Brandon Ebert, the manager at the 119th & Metcalf store arranged for that generous discount for our members. KC Scout Intelligent Transportation System The Kansas City Section breakfast meeting on March 5th featured a guest speaker representing KC Scout, the system of message boards throughout most of the interstate highway system in the greater Kansas City area. Our guest, Rusty James, Incident Management Coordinator, gave us interesting and helpful information about the KC Scout System. Tours of the Scout headquarters near I-470 & Colburn Rd. in Lee’s Summit, Missouri are available. There are 85 message boards which are coordinated from Kansas City eastward to St. Louis, north to the Iowa line, west to Topeka and on to the Colorado line.

Uplift Organization, Inc. accepts donations of goods and funds. See the Uplift website at www.uplift.org for a list of needed items and how to donate them.

It is a 24/7 operation using a huge wall which shows live video of highway traffic at strategic locations along 160 miles of highway within the metro area. The videos of traffic are not recorded. Navigation technology is used to assist in managing traffic incidents. The organization also trains police and emergency medical technicians on how to work more safely within traffic incident sites. Warnings of incidents are displayed on the information boards throughout the metro. Also pink warning signs are placed along the highway approaching incident sites. WDAF TV-4 uses the Scout technology. It is Scouts biggest partner. In many drivers’ opinions the latest, best, on-time traffic information can often be found on Channel 4. Closing a highway is the least effective and most dangerous thing to do. The average long term incident is cleared 2 hours faster now that Scout is in service. Ramp meters onto I-435 along its south loop have proven to reduce collisions. Scout is not an acronym; it is named after the famous Indian scout monument in Penn Valley Park overlooking downtown Kansas City from the hill near Liberty Memorial. It is a joint cooperative between the Missouri and Kansas Departments of Transportation. For more information contact the KC Scout traffic Center, 600 NE Colbern Rd. Lee’s Summit, Mo. 816-275-6636. Tours can be scheduled at www.kcscout.net
