Greetings Benz Friends, It doesn’t seem like it has been almost a year since I stepped into the President’s role for the Kansas City section. In addition to attending Star Tech in Birmingham this year, I have greatly enjoyed the events our own section has hosted, and hope you have enjoyed these as well. In this issue of Der Benz, you’ll find a ballot for officers and board members, please take a moment to fill this out and return it by the September Breakfast meeting. And Mark Moody, remember it’s never too late to get involved, this is your club, we President need your help. I also want take another opportunity to thank the Photo by Morgan Klepac members of our board, and all the other members who have given their time to help plan and execute our events, it wouldn’t happen without you. With your support, I look forward to another year of serving your club. Mark Moody President Mercedes-Benz Club of America | Kansas City Section

Saturday Garage Make Your Brakes Look Good Behind Those Beautiful Alloy Mercedes-Benz Wheels Steve Chase exchanges the rusty surface look for silver and black on his E500 4MATIC by Mark Moody
Saturday July 13th Steve Chase invited interested members to his garage to participate in a project to paint the brake calipers on his 2005 E500 4MATIC. Although none of us had any experience with this, we forged ahead with the instructions provided. Steve first explained about the brake technology, Mercedes-Benz “brake by wire” system. This system has to be disabled prior to beginning any work on the brakes. This system can perform a self-test based on any one of several triggers and this test poses a significant safety risk if the system is not properly disabled. After completing this, we were ready to get started. One of the things that Steve sought to remedy was a patina of rust on the hub of the brake rotor. While this did not pose any operational problem, it was visible through the wheel. Steve had purchased both silver and black caliper paint, the paint is a special high temperature paint containing a ceramic compound. After discussion, Steve A lot of help and supervision was on hand for Steve chose to use the silver paint on the hub, and the black paint on the Chase’s Saturday Garage event. Photo by Mark Moody caliper. First we began with preparing the hub and caliper for paint. This involved cleaning the caliper and hub with a brake cleaning compound and polishing the hub with steel wool and a fine sand paper. After cleaning, the wheel well and surrounding components were masked off for paint. The paint is available in both spray and brush forms, Steve primarily used spray paint for the task, and finished the caliper touch-ups with a brush. Be sure to have plenty of ventilation when working with this paint, as the fumes are very strong. Fortunately the paint is fast drying, only needing ten minutes between coats, and an hour total drying time. Although we only completed the one wheel Saturday, it was definitely a good learning experience, and Steve will be able to complete the remaining three wheels much more quickly. Steve is pleased with the results and we all came away with some new knowledge if we decide we want to tackle a similar project.
Left: Steve carefully removes the rust patina from the surface. Center: After masking the surrounding area the hub is painted silver and the caliper is painted black. Right: Ta-Daaaa. Behold the new look of class! Photos by Mark Moody

Saturday morning at the Blue River campus of Metropolitan Community College began with a continental breakfast and classroom instruction by Dudley and Ned Smith, performance driving instructors. At the track there were additional instructors from the Audi Club, the BMW Club and the Porsche Club.
Part four of the event was to drive on the autocross track. First we drove the track at a slow pace with an instructor to get familiar with the layout.
