President’s Message by Mark Moody
Greetings Benz Friends! I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving Holiday. I’m happy to report that at our November breakfast meeting, we were able to collect over $525.00 for Uplift! Plus many of you brought donations, Jim left our meeting with a truckload of clothes and food that they will be able to put to good use helping the homeless in Kansas City. I'm also pleased to report that our annual Oktoberfest Concours d'Elegance once again exceeded our expectations. We had so many cars, we started running out of places to put them. My thanks to the judges, the team manning the registration booth, and our chief concours judge, Rich Carlson for making this such a successful event. I also want to thank Sharon Angotti, Branch Manager of US Bank at 119th St. & Roe, for continuing to allow us to use their parking lot. Plus a big thanks to Mercedes Benz of Kansas City for sending the beautiful new SLK55 AMG and of course, the SLS AMG. They both were stars of the show. Don’t forget we still have plenty of events coming up. Every month we have our First Saturday Breakfast, First Sunday Drive and Spaßnacht. Coming in January we will once again be hosting our annual Winter Gala. This formal dinner will

be held this year at the Hallbrook Country Club in Leawood, KS on Saturday January 12th. This event provides us with an opportunity to gather with fellow members and recap all the great events we’ve shared in the past year. This is also when we will present our awards for the Oktoberfest Concours d’Elegance. I look forward to seeing you there!

KC Section and CAR CLUB NETWORK by John Ryan In our effort to bring value to members and increase participation in our club, we are pleased to announce that the Kansas City Section has joined forces with the Car Club Network. The Car Club Network is a customized video player that we’ve added to our club website. The network has a variety of channels updated constantly with content designed just for automotive enthusiasts like us… Think of it as YouTube just for car guys. Included in the playlist is our own customized channel, Kansas City MBCA TV, where we can add videos from our events, recaps of our meetings and anything else we want to add. We’re excited about Car Club Network because it will help us increase traffic to our site, and help get the word out about our great club. And to top it all off, it’s completely free to us with no maintenance or other fees. So check it out on the home page of our site http://www.kcmbca.org and let us know what you think. And, if you have suitable YouTube videos of our events and happenings, please forward their YouTube addresses for review to webmaster@kcmbca.org
StarFest 2012 by Jeff Klepac
StarFest 2012, the biennial convention of MBCA members, was held this year in Phoenix, AZ commonly known as the ‘Valley of the Sun’. Celebrating their 50th anniversary, the Desert Stars Section hosted this premier event. Kicking off with a welcome reception on Friday evening, StarFest was full of activities for it’s guests. The itinerary of events included Defensive Driving, AutoCross, a Safe Driver-Safe Families Teen Driving Class, Technical Workshops, a Road Rallye, Concours d’Elegance, Acceleration Runs and Time Trials. On hand for both the Concours d’Elegance and it’s award banquet was Wayne Carini, a passionate ‘Car Guy’ and host of his own TV show, “Chasing Terry Kawala, KC Section Classic Cars”. Member, received the MBUSA award. The majority of MBCA’s sections were represented at this event, including several members from the Kansas City Section. Tuesday evening’s Grand Awards Banquet honored winning participants of the events that included our own Dudley Smith. In Class 45 he was awarded 2nd Place in the AutoCross, 3rd Place in the Time Trials, and 5th Place in the Acceleration Runs. My First Mercedes by Kevin Arburn
My first Mercedes was a genuine hand-me-down. My mother had traded in the family Buick five years after dad passed away for a car she described on the phone as a “little four-cylinder economy car”. I remember feeling a little sad; thinking that she really shouldn’t have to sacrifice the luxury of the Buick to save a few bucks. She didn’t. On that same phone call I asked just what kind of car she got and the answer prompted a vision of any inheritance vaporizing before my eyes: “Mercedes-Benz”. Those two words and the word “economy” seemed mutually exclusive to me, but...it was her money and she was entitled to a major extravagance at this point in her life. This was 1978, and I had a lot to learn about Mercedes-Benz.
It took less than two hours to sell the little diesel. The local market for the car was terrible, so I posted the details in the MBCA.org web forums in the diesel section, and within the hour I got an enthusiastic email from a teacher in Amarillo, TX. I was asking $2,000, which was over double what the car would have brought locally. His email was short & very sweet: “If I send you a cashier’s check for $2,000, will you
The 1978 240D was perfect for her. It was classy enough to make all of her friends envious, slow enough to avoid most traffic tickets, and it really did sip diesel fuel compared to the near single-digit MPG of the traded-in gas-hog Buick Electra. In the mid-1980’s she did have one pretty serious accident involving the back end of a stationary city bus on an icy winter day, but even though she was injured in the crash (no airbags and one BIG steering wheel) she insisted on having the car rebuilt so that she could hand it off to me when the time came. Bless her heart. When that time did come in 2007, the little 240 had a whopping 65,000 miles on it; hardly a proper break-in time for a Mercedes diesel. While the engine and drive train were in great shape, the body was another story. The cobbled-together, non-Mercedes body shop job after the accident eventually let the rust come creeping in: the rocker panels were history and all four fenders were showing signs of rust-through. We didn’t discuss all of the welds on the floor panels underneath. The interior, however, was perfect. Regarding these flaws, my son summed it up the best: “Who cares? It’s still a Benz.”
Kevin Arburn’s mother informed him that she bought a “little four-cylinder economy car” which later became Kevin’s first Mercedes-Benz. A 1978 240D. Photo by Kevin Arburn
hold the car until I can fly up there go pick it up?” Gee...I suppose. No haggling, just a full price payment. It turned out that the young man from Texas had a 300D that badly needed a new motor drive train, as well as some interior refurbishing and our rusty but low mileage Mercedes was a perfect match for his needs. His check cleared and we had After changing the oil a couple of times and getting the a deal. injection timing re-set, the 240D was a decent driver. It was OK around town, but highway speeds required patience and Two weeks later I took the final drive in the 240D when we careful planning. I drove the car regularly for several months delivered it to the Terminal A lot at KCI. We met the buyer’s – until I found the 560SL that I just couldn’t pass up. With the plane, and before he began the long drive back to Amarillo, purchase of the 560 came a severe lack of garage space, so I tried to go over all of the car’s faults and peculiarities once we decided the family heirloom had to go. again, but he cut me off with a response that I’ll never forget: “Who cares? It’s still a Benz.”

Saturday Garage Wax on–Wax off ... The Art of Exterior Auto Detailing by Jeff Klepac
Mr. Miyagi had the right idea, well sort of – but Daniel–san would have achieved better results on Mr. Miyagi’s prize auto collection had he known a few ‘tricks of the trade’. Now this subject has been well represented over the years by numerous articles and detailing guides, so I’ll only give a high level review of our session. To prepare for the upcoming Oktoberfest Concours d’ Elegance, we invited KC section members and friends out to ‘Your Classic Ride’ on Saturday, September 15th to not only ‘watch’ the process but get some ‘hands – on’ instruction from those who’d been down this road before. I too used to be one who had great fear of using any type of electric buffer to clean and shine up my cars’ paint, afraid that doing so would burn or remove the finish and make the ‘after’ look worse than the ‘before’. But, after a little instruction from a fellow KC Section member I soon realized – “hey, I wish I’d known about this sooner.” That was the same reaction we had from the ‘first timers’ during our detail clinic. It was very rewarding to give them some hands on instruction and later hear them say, “wow, you were right – a random orbital buffer makes the job so John Ryan is just a little more proud of his SL after the detailmuch easier while achieving better results – and without ing job at Your Classic Ride. causing any damage to the cars’ finish”. Quick tips to follow; · Wash your car first - when the body surface is cool and out of the sunlight. · Unless you really want to remove all of the old wax – don’t use dishwashing liquid (leave it in the kitchen) – instead use a quality car wash soap. · Use three buckets – one strictly for the wheels, one for soaping the vehicle and one with clean water for periodically rinsing the dirt from you car wash mitt. · After washing, dry the vehicle with some micro-fiber drying towels – leave the bath towels in the bathroom (it will keep the Missus happy too!) · Next, go over the cars’ finish with the clay bar, doing a section at a time and turning the clay bar as you go.
· Now, get out the paint ‘cleaner’ and the random orbital buffer and you’ll begin to see the ‘dull turn into shine’. · When finished with the paint cleaner, change pads and apply a quality carnuba wax, again using the random orbital buffer. · Finish up using micro-fiber polishing cloths - paying attention to the details – the difference is always in the details – so be sure to clean any traces of wax left in body seams. · Clean your windows – inside and out - then enjoy the fruit of your labor. Again, if Daniel–san had know some of these tips, his hands, arms and shoulders wouldn’t have been so sore the next morning – and yours won’t either.
