A Rainye Rallye By Joyce Smith
An afternoon of rain did not stop the annual Smith Rallye. Six teams braved the wet weather and went in search of clues and answers to question on unfamiliar roads. The clues took them into Jackson County to such places as Longview Lake, the Truman farm and the military grounds of the old Richards Gebaur Air Force Base. The rallye ended at Wil Jenny’s restaurant where tales of the adventure were exchanged and One stop on the route awards were presented. John and Donna Ryan was the Harry S. Truman won the rallye with the most correct answers and home near Longview the shortest mileage. Bob and Barbara Smith The Rallye ended at Wil Jenny’s Restaurant Lake. Classic Window Stickers By John Ryan
I was putzing around the Internet the other evening, and ran across this tidbit of information. I’m going to try it out, and would like to compare results with anyone else that ends up doing it, too! You can fax a letter requesting a copy of your car’s original window sticker to: Mercedes-Benz Customer Relations at 201-476-6313. Copies can also be requested by mail to: MBUSA Customer Relations 3 Paragon Drive Montvale, NJ 07645 Include in your request your car’s basic information (year, model and VIN number) plus some proof of ownership (copy of registration card, proof of insurance or title) as well as your return address. Copies of the window stickers are generally available for current model years and those going back into the early 1980s. For older vehicles, they can sometimes get a copy of the vehicle’s original dealer invoice.

Alfa Romeo 8C Racing Cars by Bob Smith
While on vacation in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho we discovered by chance, a lineup of 33 vintage Alfa Romeo cars parked in the garage of the Coeur d’Alene Resort Hotel. The cars, all in running condition, were at a two day stopover while on the Alfa Romeo 8C Tour of the Rockies. The tour started in San Diego, California and was on the way to British Columbia and Alberta in Canada including Lake Louise, and Waterton-Glacier National Park on the Montana border with Canada. The cars are extremely collectable and fewer are in racing condition. Therefore their value continues to increase. The cars on the tour carry a “window sticker” value in the range of millions to tens of millions. We may have been looking at a billion dollars worth of cars parked all in a row. Some, being supercharged 8C models, raced and won many competitions in the 30’s such as the 24-hours Le Mans. Still today, these Alfa Romeos can easily reach 120 MPH.

New Members Attend September Breakfast It’s great to go to the regular monthly breakfast and see so many new members, all in attendance. Aaron and Kim Anothayanontha also joined the group for dinner at Arthur Bryants’s BBQ for the September Spaßnacht. John Foster showed us his 2006 E350 4Matic, and Chris Moran and his son Tim showed us the 1971 280SL that Tim (age 12) will eventually drive. It’s never too soon to get behind the wheel. His car won the 1st Place award for Best Vintage Sports Car in this years Concours d’Elegance.

Uplift Saturday is November 2nd The regular breakfast meeting of Saturday, November 2nd at First Watch in Shawnee is when members bring donations for Uplift Organization Inc. Be sure you attend this breakfast and please bring donations such as suggested in the list below. Jim Schmidt, Service Manager with Aristocrat Motors, will be there to tell us about the needs of the people that Uplift serves in the Kansas City metro area. Jim has been an active volunteer at Uplift for many years. Steve Chase, a KC Section member, is also an active supporter. Steve cooks for Uplift at least once a month. What items would you think could make a homeless persons day just a little more livable? Here are a few. New or gently used socks, gloves, underwear, shirts, T-shirts and other clothing, toiletries, canned food, blankets, coats and hats, etc., etc.

How I Restored the Cabriolet Top on My 1966 W111 By John Ogilvy The canvas top on my 1966 W111 convertible was in sad shape. I started to look around for someone to replace it that I had confidence in doing the job right. After looking into several shops in the area I was not encouraged. I have done quite a bit of mechanical and general care work on my vehicles over the years but nothing like replacing a ragtop but I was now determined to go for it. I began by searching in the Star for suppliers that specialized in convertibles and parts for them. I located a shop in California that was well recommended and after talking with the manager I ordered a pre-made replacement top at a good price. I also did an internet search on how to replace a convertible top and found a site that described, by a fellow MBCA member, how he had replaced the top on his 190SL. Stripping off the top was not difficult, there are many bits and pieces that need to be removed, tagged and carefully stored. Beneath the top is a pad and below the pad is the headliner that is cemented to the crossbows of the frame. The top I removed was easily 25 years old and the original pad was replaced back then as well. The original headliner was a material called “stretchwool”, mine however was not stretchwool but broadcloth, obviously a replacement as well. The pad was somewhat chewed up at the end that attaches to the rear bow owing to hundreds of staples that had been placed and subsequently rusted and rotted the material.
The interior wooden elements in the car have been restored to their original beauty. Photo by Bob Smith
The cloth top has been beautifully restored on the Ogilvy’s 1966 W111, as can bee seen in this photo. Photo by John Ogilvy I took the pad to a upholstery shop, explained the problem and the upholsterer very nicely sewed fresh material on the ragged end that would accept fresh staples. After carefully removing the headliner so it could be reused I was left with a bare frame. The 45-year-old frame was sturdy but thoroughly blighted by surface rust. The only thing I could do was to remove it and get it sandblasted. Everyone predicted that it would never go back together properly but with care and patience the frame was removed, blasted and repainted. The paint color for the frame was a bear to reproduce, as it was a European coded color. The repainted and well-lubricated frame was lowered back into place and carefully relocated as to front to back and side to side. The rear wooden bow that the headliner, pad and top are stapled to was repaired and put back into place. The assembly was a reverse process with headliner first, then pad and finally the top. The top needed to be loose fitted first and carefully secured. I have left out many steps in this description but in the end I was able to achieve success. If you do your homework and take your time it can be done. Editors Note: The Ogilvy’s, KCMBCA members, reside in Springfield, Mo. They have traveled in their trouble-free Mercedes-Benz from coast to coast and border to border during their thirteen years of ownership. Their car was entered in the Oktoberfest Concours d’Elegance this year.
