WHEN YOU START THE

BUSINESS WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT

SEGMENT YOU WILL LOOK AT?

When you start the Business what is the most important segment you will look at? I know you are thinking about the cash, and how much you have to put in? And also how much profit you will make? You want to work hard, you emotions are very high and you want to become Bill Gates, and if someone asks you what is the plan of business, you always say” I am tired of my daily work and I want to do something new”

I will share my experience. First, you have to find your skill. How you find out? Ask yourself! Who you are? What can you do? Let’s take an example: you think you want to be a Builder and you will make good money in this business. Ask the question to yourself, do you have the ability to perform the work, or do you have the ability to manage someone to perform this work for you Let’s go back to first thought you can perform the work and you do not have the ability to manage someone else do this work for you. So make sure! Do not start the bigger project, start from the smaller project and put you’re all efforts into it and you will become successful. Just think about that if you start the bigger project and Unable to manage the people, you will lose everything. Second thought, if you cannot do it by yourself but you can manage the people, now you have to first do homework and test you skills, and just look around, how many helping hands do you have? Do you have anyone without financial Influence? Find one inside the home and one outside the home. If the answer comes yes, you just relax and you are already a millionaire. However if the answer comes no, you are bankrupt. Once you pass the initial test, now you can move forward and make the plan, what is the first thing you want to do.

My Message To You Today MAKE MONEY WITH MONEY IS NOT THE SMART IDEA

MAKE MONEY WITHOUT MONEY IS THE WEALTH MANSOOR NAQVI 06

MBE: Mr. Swami can you please start off by telling us about your childhood before you moved to Canada.

MBE: What was a culture shock you personally faced in your early years in Canada?

SWAMI: I was born into a middle class Hindu priest family in Sri Lanka and spent my childhood studying to become a priest. From a young age I had a desire to build temples and help my community. I have always believed that a good connection with religion, be it any religion, helps a person in every aspect of life including business and prosperity. At the age of 20 I completed all the studies required to be a priest.

SWAMI: As I mentioned earlier they major setbacks I faced were with food and language barrier. As the years have gone on I have learnt to speak English and adjusted my diet so that I can eat properly here also.

MBE: When you reached Canada how did you feel you could help the Hindu and Sri Lankan community in Canada? SWAMI: At the time they were very few Hindu Priests from Sri Lanka in Canada but they were many immigrant families. Therefore I started helping the community with various occasions such as weddings, funerals, house ceremonies and the birth of new born children. One of the things I pushed for the most was the building of temple made specially for Hindus from the southern part of India and Sri Lanka.

SWAMI: The biggest problem in running a Hindu temple is that in the HIndu religion there is no fixed congregation so therefore a Hindu can go to one temple one week and a different temple the next week. Because of this we do not have a fixed in flow of donations and some months we receive good donations and other months we do not. The only help we have received from the government is that it allows tax relief for those who donate towards the temple.

MBE: What problems do you face running a Hindu Temple in Canada and what help do you get from the Government?

MBE: Can you please tell us a specific instance where your temple was able to help your community.

MBE: How were you able to gather the required funds to build such a temple?

SWAMI: When the Tsunami struck Sri Lanka in 2007 many Sri Lankan's living in Canada had lost friends and family back home. The temple not only helped council these immigrants through this difficult time but we were also able to collect a lot of donations to send to the affected parts in Sri Lanka.

SWAMI: At first no one was willing to help out because of my language barrier. I went to other communities apart from my own and then eventually I was able to find people who were willing to donate to the cause. With the help of these people we were able to build a temple where people could come and practice the Hindu religion.

The temple was also to help other communities for example the Turkish community that was affected by the severe earthquake that took place in Turkey. Once again we were able to raise funds for those that were affected by this disaster.

At the time there were 10 temples for Hindus from the northern part of India but they was only 1 temple for Hindus from the South of India and Sri Lanka which practiced the same kind of Hinduism. There was a desperate need for more temples for these people.

MBE: How do you spend your personal time apart from helping other people?

MBE: What do you believe are the common mistakes immigrants coming from this part of the Asia make when they arrive in Canada and how were you able to advise these immigrants?

SWAMI: I like spending my free time reading books and watching TV dramas. Apart from that I like spending time with family and two sons. I have given my children the freedom to chose whichever path they want in life. This means if they do not want to become priests they do not have to.

SWAMI: The biggest mistakes and difficulties immigrants face when they arrive in Canada is integrating into western society. Even the leaders of the community some time do not do enough to help these immigrants integrate into society. I took a personal initiative to give lectures every Friday to my community in which I not only preached about religion but I also spoke about how immigrants could integrate into Canadian society.

MBE: Any last message for the readers of our MBE Business Magazine? SWAMI: An important message for the immigrants of Canada especially that is that it is vital for you to contribute to the society in which you live. Contribution means culturally and economically. As a gratitude for the Country that has given you a home and has now become your mother land you must do whatever you can to give back to the country and community.

The most important advice I gave to new immigrants was to learn English because it was integral in living in Canada. I also set up classes for immigrants to learn English.

DEALING

WITH SELF WORTH AND

HOW TO INCREASE IT Self-worth begins at a very young age. If you have ever observed a toddler, you will have noticed how they jump, make noises and scream; all without any fear of judgment. They seem to give little attention to the clothes they are wearing, the style of their hair, and even to who are watching them. Children, simply, have not developed the notion that they are being judged by others. As these toddlers grow, they start to become aware of what society expects them to be. The beginning of school encourages children to be like each other. Sitting in the same chairs that are at the same desks, learning the same lessons and writing the same tests with the same pencils; at this age little to no individuality is promoted. This is the starting point to where these children begin to understand the “importance” of how society expects each and every one of them to act, think and behave. As children grow up and begin high school, being like everyone else becomes a necessity. They begin to wear the same clothes, the same shoes, and even speak in the same slang as their peers.

Growing up children are consistently reminded as to “what is and what is not acceptable.” This is when their self-worth becomes tainted, should these individuals not fit into any/all of the categories that their culture/society expects of them. Judgment is developed and insults, abuse or bullying can begin. If repeated enough times, the unsupportive and sometimes offensive messages received from others, subconsciously transmutes itself into our own personal, and sometimes limiting, beliefs.

(Should we repeat something to ourselves, whether it be good or bad, an adequate amount of times, our brain picks up on these signals and is programed to believe it. This is why affirmations and incantations have worked so well for so many people.)

10

In my opinion, today’s standards of self worth and popularity have drastically changed from those expected in the past 10 years. Before we had things like Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, people would develop a sense of significance or popularity on the number of friends they had, how many phone numbers they had saved, or how many people would talk to them. Many teens today base their popularity on how many friends they have on their social media lists, how many followers they have and even how many “likes” their status updates get.

repairman that the strings will adapt to the correct positioning. The same is true for self-worth. I have put together a few methods one may use to increase, adjust and reshape their self-esteem. Being around people who are supportive and positive is a great way to increase self worth. As mentioned earlier, repetitive insults can cause an individual to believe them to be true. Using the same method, only in a positive way, hearing compliments and other supportive mantras, can help one in forming new positive beliefs about themselves. If someone does give a compliment, make sure to accept it by saying “thank you.” Accepting a compliment is a form of accepting that particular opinion or view about you, and seeing the truth behind it.

Should one week they get 100 “likes” on a status, they feel a great sense of recognition or importance but if the next week they end up with 40, their sense of purpose and significance drastically decreases. Teens can then develop a great sense of insecurity and begin to feel self-conscious, worthless and sometimes even depressed.

Daily exercise and healthy eating are other great examples of increasing self-worth. The body and mind are interconnected and after exercise a sense of empowerment is felt and can increase ones mood. Making better choices with food intake can also provide the energy needed to help one feel great and be the best possible version of themselves. Even something as simple as physically smiling can help with self-worth; it increases the blood flow to the brain and can also increase ones attitude.

In order to counter act these negative feelings, people may turn to alcohol or drugs to mask their pain, while some may even begin to induce self-harm in different forms. Their limiting beliefs begin to take over and they begin saying things to themselves such as, “I’m useless, I’m over weight, I’m irresponsible, I’ll never succeed, I’m worthless…” etc. Approaching adulthood, those whom HAVE THE POTENTIAL of going into business for themselves and succeeding, creating the enterprise they have dreamt of, or obtaining that position they’ve always wanted, will be held back if they have a lack of self-confidence. Imagine how many more Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg’s or Warren Buffets there would be if only people had the confidence to create a vision, take action and follow through with it. Low self-worth can literally destroy a life, while the opposite is also true. Someone having a high sense of self-worth can achieve their vision and create the life of their dreams. (While there are many other factors that play a role in our own personal success, self-worth, in my opinion is ranked the highest in terms of importance.)

Keeping a list of your accomplishments and positive qualities is a great tool to increase your self worth. Whether someone is a great poet, storyteller, business person, or artist, write down what you are good at and keep the list. Anytime you feel uncertainty in yourself or your work, the list will always be there to give a sense of reassurance and increase your self-confidence. Exploring a passion or a hobby can certainly increase self worth. When an individual does something that they enjoy and feel passionately about, they can surely develop a sense of purpose or significance, thus increasing their feelings of worth.

There is no quick cure for low self-esteem, it is something that needs to be consistently developed and worked on over a period of time. Think of a grand piano that is out of tune. You call a repairman to re-tune your piano and when he is finished, he tells you that he has to return next week again to re-tune your piano. How is this possible? He just finished re-tuning! Being a new piano owner, what you do not realize is that the strings on the piano have been stretched in the wrong direction under the wrong tension for so long that they have conditioned themselves in a way in which they will go back to their original positioning. It is only after a few visits from the

Regardless of the path you choose to increase self-worth, it is still something that needs to be cared for, reconditioned, and built upon every so often. The world’s expectations are constantly changing at an incredible speed. If you are feeling inferior, inadequate or fearful of others opinions, take the time to re-evaluate yourself and understand the importance of working and living at your peak performance because you are worth it!

The title of this Article sounds like a conundrum does it not? I think so.

I am assuming that it is common knowledge that the standard of proof in a civil matter is different from that in a criminal matter. In a civil matter, the standard of proof is based on a “balance of probabilities” whilst in a criminal matter, it is based on proof “beyond a reasonable doubt”. In the present Article, my focus is only on civil proceedings. I believe that there are four versions of the “truth” in a civil matter. These are the four “truths”:

1. The Plaintiff/Applicant’s version of the “truth” (“Plaintiff’s truth”) 2. The Defendant/Respondent’s version of the “truth” (“Defendant’s truth”) 3. The Judge’s findings of fact (“Judge’s truth”) 4. The TRUTH.

USUALLY, A CIVIL MATTER IS A BATTLE BETWEEN:

the “Plaintiff’s truth” vs. the “Defendant’s truth”. The Judge or Trier of fact (“Judge”) has to determine who to believe between these two competing camps. As noted above, the Judge has to determine on a “balance of probabilities”, whose “truth” is more believable. Just to be clear, the Judge’s decision is based on his/her findings of fact between these competing “truths”. I am just going to call out the “elephant in the room” and respectfully submit as follows: the Judge’s decision may or may not be based on the TRUTH. In my opinion, we may or may not know the TRUTH. In my humble opinion, I have seen cases decided “wrongly”. Does it mean our justice system does not work? Absolutely Not!

It just means our justice system is not perfect. Not surprising, you cannot expect perfection from imperfect beings. I am going to leave all of you with a quote I saw recently: “Most people don’t really want the Truth. They just want constant reassurance that what they believe is the Truth”. P.S.: If you get value from this Article, please feel free to send me an e-mail at: olu@ogunniyilawoffices.com. I like feedback! By Olubunmi Ogunniyi, LL.B. Why do human beings do the things they do? How it is that one person will sacrifice his own life for another, while another will murder a stranger for sheer pleasure? What creates a Charles Manson or a Nelson Mandela? What is the force that drives and shapes all of our emotions, actions, qualities of life, and ultimately, our destinies? While each human being is unique, we also share nervous systems that function in the same way. There are also six fundamental needs that everyone has in common, and all behavior is simply an attempt to meet those six needs. CERTAINTY: assurance you can avoid pain and gain pleasure UNCERTAINTY/VARIETY: the need for the unknown, change, new stimuli SIGNIFICANCE: feeling unique, important, special or needed CONNECTION/LOVE: a strong feeling of closeness or union with someone or something GROWTH: an expansion of capacity, capability or understanding CONTRIBUTION: a sense of service and focus on helping, giving to and supporting others

THIS DRIVE IS ENCODED IN OUR NERVOUS SYSTEM

The means by which people meet these six human needs are unlimited. For example, one of the six human needs is the desire for certainty that we can avoid pain and gain pleasure (i.e. comfort). Some people pursue this need by striving to control all aspects of their lives, while others obtain certainty by giving up control and adopting a philosophy of faith. Variety makes us feel alive and engaged. Then there’s the desire for significance a belief that one’s life has meaning and importance. Some individuals will pursue this need by competing with others, or by destroying and tearing down those around them. Others may strive to fulfill this need through connection with other human beings.

The force of life is the drive for fulfillment; we all have a need to experience a life of meaning. Fulfillment can only be achieved through a pattern of living in which we focus on two spiritual needs: 1) The need to continuously grow; and 2) The need to contribute beyond ourselves in a meaningful way. All dysfunctional behaviors arise from the inability to consistently meet these needs. When our attempts to reach fulfillment fail, we will settle for comfort or for meeting our needs on a small scale. Look to replace any dis-empowering ways of meeting your needs with things that empower and support you and others.

UNDERSTANDING THESE NEEDS, AND WHICH ONES YOU ARE TRYING TO MEET IN ANY GIVEN MOMENT, CAN HELP YOU CREATE NEW PATTERNS THAT LEAD TO LASTING FULFILLMENT. 13

IF YOU

ELLING YOUR HOME IN THIS

PRING SELLING THIS SPRING

Are you considering selling your home this spring? As we head into the year's busiest real estate season, ensuring that your home is in its best condition will help attract maximum interest. Here are some tried and true steps to follow:

BEGIN THE PURGE

Put your house on a diet. Give consideration to the appeal of a tidy and organized house and begin removing or donating both the things that clutter your home and the things you don't want to move with you. Choose a drawer, shelf or storage bin, and begin streamlining, room-by-room, a little bit at a time. Seasonal changes can create great opportunities for sorting unworn clothes. You'll be happy to have less on moving day and your closets will look bigger to potential buyers. A garage sale is a great way to purge before your home's first showing.

26

CONTACT YOUR REALTOR We your partner in selling what is likely your largest asset. We can assist you in getting your home prepared for sale and in helping you understand the current buying and selling real estate markets. As an experienced, attentive and committed Realtor, we know the market and can put the strength of an established, leading real estate brand to work for you. It's our goal to help you sell your home in the shortest amount of time possible and at the best possible price.

FIX WHAT'S BROKEN OR DAMAGED Determine what house maintenance is in order. To pass a home inspection, certain repairs may be unavoidable. Taking care of these issues now will ease your burden later and improve your sales opportunities. Simple repairs are also well worth the effort. Painting those chipped shutters and replacing the broken banister rail will provide a return in creating the right impression for a timely sale.

THINK LIKE A BUYER This can be the hardest step since we love our homes and generally assume others will too. Accept that potential buyers have different tastes and consider hiring a house staging professional or 'fluffer' who can objectively determine what needs to change. Consider basic staging techniques such as removing clutter; putting away personal items like photos and trophies; cleaning and sanitizing inside and out, from top to bottom; freshening and neutralizing your colour scheme; making your entrance way appealing; eliminating pet and food odors; enhancing the illusion of space, beautifying your backyard. See the 2006 Royal LePage House Staging Report for more information.

Alternatively, if you have a friend, relative or colleague, who is considering buying or selling, please tell them about us. Your referrals are genuinely appreciated. We will treat your friends and family with the good care they deserve so you can be proud you referred us.

27

Did you know that your home can sparkle this spring without using any chemicals? Choose from a wide array of eco-friendly cleaners on the market or simply make your own with household ingredients such as vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice. Here are a few tips to help you become a natural when it comes to spring cleaning:

THE BATHROOM Want to bring out a natural shine to your sinks, toilets, and tubs? Create a gentle scouring paste by mixing 4 tbsp. baking soda with 1 tbsp. water. Generously sprinkle either table salt or baking soda into the sink or tub and use the cut end of half a fresh lemon as a scrubby-pad. Rinse with hot water and your ceramics will be gleaming! Undiluted lemon juice can also be used to dissolve soap scum and hard water deposits.

28

THE KITCHEN Fabrics and Carpets Vinegar, a natural antibacterial, has a high acid content Have a stubborn fabric stain? which makes it an effective alternative to caustic cleaners for the kitchen. Mix together 1 part water to 1 part vinegar in a new spray bottle and you have a natural solution that will clean stovetops, appliances, countertops (except marble), and floors. For troublesome stains, add a touch of baking soda to the mix. To help remove finger marks from stainless steel appliances use a microfiber cloth or try a dab of baby oil on a clean cloth. For microwaves, put a few slices of fresh lemon in an uncovered bowl of water and cook on high for about three minutes. Grease and dirt should wipe away easily.

WINDOWS Let the sunshine in by washing away winter’s grime. Fill

a bucket with 25 per cent vinegar and 75 per cent warm water. Put on rubber gloves and soak an old cotton towel in the solution. Rub on windows, and then scrunch up some old newspaper to buff up a shine. If there are any streaks, simply finish off with a dry cloth.

29

Dab white vinegar onto the stain followed by a mild soap solution such as all natural dishwashing liquid and water. Rinse with a clean damp cloth and blot with a dry towel. Salt can also be used to soak up fresh carpet stains such as red wine, coffee or ink. Simply pour salt on the wet stain, let dry, and then vacuum. Natural ingredients can not only get rid of stains, they’ll help eliminate odors from fabrics too!

COW’S MILK PROTEIN ALLERGY IN INFANTS < 6 MONTHS ABOUT COW’S MILK PROTEIN ALLERGY? A cow’s milk protein allergy (CMPA) occurs when the body mistakenly sees milk protein as something bad and will start to attack it. Symptoms generally appear within the first few months of life, typically within days or months after introducing an infant formula made with cow’s milk. Breast feeding protects against development of a CMPA. However, a small percentage of sensitive infants will also show’s symptoms of CMPA when exclusively breastfed if mom ingests milk and milk products. A CMPA typically resolves by 3 to 5 years of life. However, in practice most infants seem to tolerate some milk products by 1 year of life A CMPA is not the same thing as lactose intolerance, the inability to digest the sugar lactose. Lactose intolerance is extremely rare in infants and more typically found in older children and adults. If you think your infant has lactose intolerance speak to your doctor or dietitian.

DONATE

SYMPTOMS OF CMPA IN BABIES Skin rash • Blood in stool Irritability after feeding • Mucous in stool Frequent vomiting/spit up

DIAGNOSIS There is no single lab test to diagnose a CMPA. Your doctor will take medical history, physical examination, and available tests to make a diagnosis.

TREATMENT The treatment for CMPA is to eliminate all sources of cow’s milk protein in the infant’s diet. A child’s symptoms will improve significantly once it has been removed.

BREAST FEEDING If you are breast feeding, your doctor or dietitian may recommend you avoid/restrict milk products in your diet. A small percentage of the milk proteins you ingest cross into the breast milk. Fluid cow’s milk, cheese, yogurt and butter are most common sources of milk protein, however many products contain milk ingredients. It is recommended to read all nutrient labels to ensure they do not contain:

MBBS, DCH, MRCPI, FRCP, FRCPCH If you are formula feeding your baby with a cow’s milk protein formula (eg. Similac, Enfamil, President’s choice, Parent’s choice, etc) you will have to change to a hypoal lergenic formula. These hypoallergenic formulas have protein that’s been broken down into smaller pieces and don’t trigger an allergic reaction in the body. The hypoallergenic formulas available on the market are Nutramigen and Alimen tum. It is unsafe to feed your baby partially hydrolyzed formulas (eg. Goodstart or Similac Partially Broken Down Protein) or homemade recipes made with goat, sheep, soy, rice, almond or coconut milk. Many infants allergic to cow’s milk protein can also develop allergies to other mammal and plant proteins. Also, homemade recipes can be nutritionally inadequate for an infant. Soy formula may be an option for your baby, but should be discussed with your physician or dietitian prior to trying with your baby.
