5. TRANSPARENCY IS THE KEY TO COMMUNICATION. Creating an environment of transparency, where you speak openly about your business to your employees and they feel comfortable coming to you with anything that's on their minds can do wonders for the collective motivation of your workplace. That's because transparency builds trust; when people understand that you aren't hiding anything, and that you'll listen to anybody, they're far more likely to respect you as an authority and appreciate you as a leader. It also opens inter-departmental channels, giving employees and supervisor’s greater clarity and more opportunities to openly communicate.

Use your own money. Don’t let your summer bills follow you into the fall by accumulating spending debt. Financial expert Shannon Lee Simmons, founder of the New School of Finance, suggests selecting debit to pay for fun activities. Not only are you spending your own money instead of accumulating debt, with a mobile banking app you can track your transactions in real-time to keep tabs on what you’re spending. Options like Interac Flash make it easy to make quick, small purchases and stay in control.

KNOWING YOUR BUSINESS MATTERS
Lending your company car? Maybe think twice Submitted by Mauro Di Tullio, SENIOR ACCOUNT REPRESENTATIVE, ASSOCIATIONS | www.federated.ca
Many people may not think twice about lending their car to someone, especially if they’re a friend or colleague. Some might also use their personal vehicle for business purposes, assuming it’s not a big deal. But in both of these instances, major problems could arise if something goes wrong. So it’s important to think twice before lending out a company vehicle, and know as much as you can about what risks you’re opening yourself up to. What could happen? Once you lend your car or truck out, you can’t control what happens to it, but you could be negatively impacted by someone else’s actions. For instance, if the person borrowing the vehicle is in an at-fault accident, your insurance premium may increase. Another thing to keep in mind is that third-party coverage may also be affected if the driver does something that violates your insurance policy and gets involved in an accident. You could be implicated in the third-party insurer’s recovery attempt as they could sue both the driver and vehicle owner. Your insurance coverage may not respond to the loss as a result of the violation, so you and the driver would have to pay for your own legal counsel. Let’s start with some questions Because of the potential negative ramifications associated with lending out your company vehicle, it’s important to ask some questions before doing so. And yes, this applies even when lending a car to your own employees. Some possible questions to ask include: Do you have a proper driver’s license for the type of vehicle you’re using? You may wish to obtain a copy for your records, but also keep in mind applicable privacy law requirements when it comes to collecting personal information. What will the car be used for? How long will you need it for? Where will you be travelling (out of province, out of the country)? Who will be driving? How many passengers will you have? Will alcohol be consumed socially? Some other things to keep in mind You can never be too careful in a situation like this. There are a number of best practices that you should perform, just to make sure you’re doing everything you can to avoid an unwanted situation. Some important things to know are listed below: There should only be as many people in the vehicle as there are seat belts. See if there are any restrictions on the license of the person you’re lending the vehicle to. Younger drivers especially may still be in some stage of their Graduated Driver License, which places restrictions on their driving status. page 24
Giving someone keys to your company vehicle gives them consent to drive it – even if there was no written or verbal agreement. Vehicles with company logos can be great advertising but may also be detrimental to your business’ image if the vehicle is used irresponsibly or gets in an accident.
Coverage, coverage, coverage You can’t control what someone does when they’re using your company vehicle, but you can be careful about who you lend it to, and determine the measures you have in place in case of an accident. © Federated Insurance Company of Canada. Encourage movement breaks Desk work involves long stretches of time when employees are not moving. Buying standing desks for your employees isn't the answer; the negative effects of desk work – like musculoskeletal disorders and increased risk of certain diseases – happen whether workers are sitting or standing. Instead, sedentary time should be broken up with periods of physical activity. "One way to improve office health is to use design that encourages movement throughout the day," said Rachel Lehn, business operations manager at Perfect Search Media. The company offers a private area for exercising and stretching, fit with foam rollers, yoga mats, kettlebells and bands.

Technical and industry knowledge The typical job requirements for a CIO or a CTO include technical, financial and organizational experience. Efforts over the last 10 years to more closely link IT to the business side of a company adds in-depth business skills and knowledge to the CIO and CTO job requirements mix. Gone are the days when a CIO or CTO could ignore the business and deliver IT on IT's schedule. CIOs and CTOs who don't fully support the organization's business goals could find themselves looking for work. Following high-tech industry websites and influential CIO/CTO blogs is a great first step to attaining this exalted role. Learn the lingo and see for yourself what working CIOs and CTOs are talking about and why they care about such things.
