TRENDS IN ELECTRONIC PAYMENTS: WHAT TO EXPECT IN

By Andre Malinowski The payments landscape is changing fast – and much of this fast-paced change is being driven by today’s digitally empowered consumers, whose expectations have been transformed by the smartphone and the services these supply.

the growing consumer hunger for payment convenience. And the ubiquity of mobile devices – and the emergence of wearable tech – means at some point that the mass uptake of mobile payment is inevitable.

This means that more than ever before, consumers expect payments to be fast, convenient and hassle-free.

But the mobile phone represents a tempting attack vector for criminals. Recent high profile data breaches have left consumers highly sensitized to the issue of ID theft and fraud. For mobile payments to take off, consumers will need to be certain that their transactions, data and devices are secure – and that means that mechanisms need to be in place to deal with a variety of scenarios – including device loss/theft, and the use of public Wi-Fi. It also means that payment instruments need to be developed to take account of the fact that the desire of smartphone users to personalize their devices does not expose them to malware or privacy violations.

And that’s set payment providers and other contenders in the payments ecosystem scrabbling to capture the hearts – and wallets – of today’s device-wielding consumers at the PoS. Which is why in 2015 we saw a plethora of mobile payment innovations, including the launch of Apple Pay and Samsung Pay, and the rollout of Google’s new Android Pay app. No surprise when you consider how global retail payments hit a record high in 2015 – and are predicted to exceed the $13 trillion mark in 2016. Clearly, getting the payment proposition right for consumers as they shop in-store, online or on the move generates commercial returns. And with POS transactions up 10 per cent in 2015, it’s a safe bet that consumer demand for card and digital payment technologies will continue unabated in the coming months.

What’s more, merchants will also need to be confident the payment industry can deliver bullet-proof frameworks to protect against mobile payments fraud and create a secure and trusted relationship with customers.

So, here are my predictions on what’s going to dominate headlines in 2016: Mobile commerce – we’re still waiting for mass uptake This time last year the media whipped up a frenzy of anticipation, predicting that the launch of Apple Pay would generate a mobile commerce explosion in 2015. But after all the hype, what really happened? Despite gaining some traction in regions like the US, there’s little evidence that consumers with an iPhone 6 device are choosing to use Apple Pay in preference to the other payment instruments available. Because, when you’ve got plenty of other payment options in your pocket, what’s the motivation to pay with your phone? And how does the mobile proposition play out in countries like Germany, where cash remains king at the POS? So, the Apple Pay launch showed us that not every new payment innovation scales or catches on as expected. And in 2016 we’re set to see yet more fragmentation in this space as yet more mobile payment and wallet solutions launch. Security is key to building consumer adoption – and merchant confidence The steady growth of contactless payment at the local convenience store and on public transport systems around the world demonstrates

Get ready for the connected home In 2016 we’re set to see the Internet of Things fuel online transactions as smart home automation products increasingly go main stream. With the 2015 launch of Apple’s HomeKit, the vision of connected appliances taking on the management of our heating, domestic security and lighting is becoming a reality. So, will having an Internet-connected fridge in your kitchen that’s integrated with your bank account or credit card represent a security

risk? And how will that play out in terms of extending real-time payment services into the e-commerce and m-commerce arenas? Only time will tell. Smart technologies will disrupt today’s payment culture, ushering in a future where digital commerce micro payments could potentially be initiated from multiple places – electricity meters, road sensors, car park number recognition systems, audio/visual systems. And that means consumers will need real-time visibility into fund transfers and receipts.

distinct breeds of online retailers the first being smaller companies and new market entrants who typically look for a full service e-commerce platform that incorporates a web-shop, payment and logistics/fulfilment. The second was larger more established players who look for as much diversity as possible, picking acquirers and vendors appropriate for each and every market and channel they operate within.

Digital currencies will come of age They’ve been around for a while now, but transaction volumes for digital currencies like bitcoin are steadily rising. Today around 100,000 merchants and service providers accept bitcoin – a peer-to-peer digital currency that eliminates transaction fees for retailers and guarantees payment. Bitcoin is appealing from a consumer perspective too – they can store bitcoins in their digital wallet, use them as cross-border cash for global online payments, or make peer-to-peer payments. And all in the knowledge that their personal data is protected and stays private. With central banks now exploring the use of cryptographically protected digital money and bitcoin transfers to enable cheap, relatively fast and secure inter-bank transfers, this may well be the year that digital currencies gain more widespread acceptance. Consumers will make more – not less – payment choices In the last few years we’ve seen a plethora of new payment innovations emerge – NFC, wallet, EMV cards, and mobile payment apps. It seems like today’s consumers have never had so much choice when it comes to payment. But what’s also clear is that they will continue to make more and different choices about how to pay, depending on what the transaction is, and whether they’re conducting it in-person or online – and where in the world they live. And that may explain why, in 2015, we saw the emergence of two

SECRET OF BECOMING RICH AND SUCCESSFUL

BY | MANSOOR NAQVI _______________

ecoming and being rich is a state which everybody strives to achieve. However the problem is that very few people know how to actually become rich and successful. Being rich is not just being wealthy in monetary terms; it is a combination of health and strength. If you want to become a real rich and successful person you have to maintain the following 7 points:

01 POSITIVITY

02 TARGET

04 HEALTH

03 DISCIPLINE

05 INVESTMENT

06 ENVIRONMENT

07 DEDICATION

POSITIVITY: Positivity is the basic criteria of success. Anything that you perform or any idea that you get, you have to approach it in a positive manner only then can you achieve what you set out to do. Your positive attitude will make a difference no matter what happens. For example: if you decide to invest your wealth in real estate and the value of the property goes down you should remain positive and look for alternatives such as renting out the property until the prices go up and you can look to sell.

MB BUSINESS MAGAZINE MARCH 2016

HEALTH: It doesn’t matter how wealthy you are if you do not maintain your health all your effort will go in vain. Daily physical and mental exercises will help your body and mind remain in peak condition. A physically and mentally healthy person will always make better decisions and will always be able to put in the extra effort that is required towards reaching success.

INVESTMENT: Investing correctly is crucial for maintaining wealth. Once a person has achieved good monitory results in their work it does not guarantee that they will be rich and successful in the long run. To achieve this one must be a savvy investor and know how to use their money to make more money. If one does not do this their wealth will lose value and they will lose all the rewards they had worked so hard for.

TARGET:

Setting a goal or a target is a crucial factor in achieving success. One must know what they are planning for and what end result they are hoping to achieve. This will help alleviate the pressures that come with being an employee or an employer.

DISCIPLINE:

If you are a disciplined person your path towards health and your wealth will be organized. For example if you know what you need to do between 9 A.M. and 5 P.M. and all the tasks are target oriented, discipline in your daily routine will help you face all sorts of obstacles.

ENVIRONMENT: Without the correct environment it is very difficult for one to become rich and successful. If the people around you do not motivate you and support you then their negative energy will always hold you back and will not let you reach your maximum potential. DEDICATION:

When you start work, you have to follow the steps towards your target. Your energy from the start to the end should remain the same. Without this dedication it will not be easy to reach your target. My message to you today and a conclusion to my article is that the secret to becoming rich and successful is hard work and dedication towards reaching a goal and the will to never give up.

Tips for becoming a successful Sales Person

By Mahmood Naqvi

The first thing I would like to emphasize is that if you are a sales person you should be thinking about yourself as a customer. Now ask yourself this paramount question, how would you like to be treated? A few thumb rules on how to interact with and how to treat customers can help you achieve the desired level of success in the sales and marketing arena. We’ve subsumed these rules into ten major categories:

DRESSING The importance of dressing in a job related to sales cannot be over-stated, your dressing shows how organized and well-groomed you are, sales is all about first impressions so if your personal grooming is not of the very best quality you are going to make bad impressions perform poorly.

OFFICE TIMING Your office timing starts when you wake up, because a well-organized day starts the moment your alarm wakes you up. If you’re late, you’re missing opportunities and an early start always helps you organize and schedule your day in a more productive way.

YOUR BEHAVIOUR WITH CO-WORKERS Your behavior with your co-workers is crucial because positivity and

keeping your head up goes a very long way. If you’re envious or jealous of a better performing or more experienced sales person within your team, it will diminish your chances of learning from them and their experience. Plus sales is always about interacting with people and a person who can’t deal with co-workers well can’t hope to achieve much success with clients.

YOUR DESK Of equal importance is your desk which should always be clean with stationery and supplies placed neatly where they belong, this will help you remember where you placed your keys or visiting cards and will save time when you leave for field-work. Also, a messed-up desk might cause embarrassment when a client decides to visit un-invited.

SCHEDULING Scheduling is a small word but a difficult practice. Making a schedule is about knowing how long it will take for you to make a trip, complete a job or attend a meeting. It is also about time-shifting and replacing things with one-another as you go to manage things as your day progresses.

MB BUSINESS MAGAZINE MARCH 2016

10

BEING ON TIME being on time is about keeping your word and showing that you are organized. Once you have set an appointment, show up and be on time. This shows you are committed, professional and well-coordinated. If you’re late, call the client, inform them the reason of the delay and politely apologize. This will build trust and trust is the cornerstone for any successful sale.

FOCUS ON THE RELATIONSHIP Relationships are paramount to sales. A good sales person is one who maintains healthy relationships with current and prospective clients. These relationships extend his reach and enable him to get more

business and plenty of referrals.

STAY CONNECTED once you have an impressive portfolio and a sizeable client base, you should draw up a plan to stay connected within your business circle through emails, text messages, and occasional gift cards on holidays, birthday wishes and anniversary greetings to give your clients a sense of personal touch and importance.

STAY UP-FRONT Transparency is also crucial to a good sales person’s performance. Try to be 100% honest and up-front with your clients and take up an approach that focuses on educating clients. Avoid obscurantist tactics and misinformation or you’ll soon lose the trust and reliance your clients have on you.

BE WITHIN REACH As I have already emphasized, you should always stay connected to your current and potential clients. One aspect of this connectivity is being within reach and being easily accessible, you should pick up calls, reply to text messages and respond to emails in a timely manner to prove that you are agile and always up to the moment. To sum it all up, I would again stress that a sales person should always think of themselves as a client and ask themselves how they’d like to be treated if they were on the other side of the table. Any sales representative who observes these ten basic steps will definitely increase their productivity, their chances of success and will be able to enhance their reach and relationship with clients.

PREVENTING FINANCIAL PROBLEMS Preventing Financial Problems Tips to Prepare for Financial Issues By David Sklar

A

t any time in our economy, financial hardship can enter our lives, unemployment rates are up in Canada, and this is forcing many families to live on less money each month.

If you are laid off, do you have enough money saved to help you weather the storm? Ideally you should look to have at least 6 -8 weeks of emergency funds in case of a layoff. This is cash on hand that you have in your bank. This is not including your RRSPs or your credit. Anytime financial problems encounter a family such as layoff or reduction in income, your spending habits have to change, as you can’t expect to keep up the same spending levels and not gain more debt. You need to work on living with less. Relying too much on Credit in times of financial hardship can only lead to increased debt levels. If your debt levels are increasing and your income level has declined, it will take longer for you to pay off these debts, and if it gets out of hand you may have to seek out a trustee. The Need to Save More Not enough savings saving on hand can be an issue. Not having enough actual money that you can access can be a problem. Options to help save. Setup a savings plan with your bank, and have money deposited each paycheck into your savings, and don’t touch it until needed. Try

switching using cash for your daily expenses, and have set amounts for your expense categories, and keep track of your expenses. Money Mismanagement Try going to cash only spending. Avoid the temptation to use your debit or credit cards. Using them in times of hardship can lead to increased debt levels. Avoid going into overdraft. If you are going into your overdraft often, you will need to look at this issue and determine why it is happening. How much are you spending on Coffee or Restaurants each month? This is a task for anyone, see how much you are spending on Coffee each month. Or if coffee isn’t your weakness, try tracking another expense. Track your receipts/spending for a month to get a real number on what you are spending. You may find it surprising. Save all your receipts for all expenses each month, and then review your budget each month. Doing this can help to spot any spending problem areas you may have that you are unaware of.

Alka Sahai

Oakville's Alka Sahai named one of Canada's Outstanding Principals for 2015 OAKVILLE PRINCIPAL ALKA SAHAI WAS NAMED ONE OF CANADA’S OUTSTANDING PRINCIPALS FOR 2015 BY THE LEARNING PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM.

he principal of Captain R. Wilson Public School says she’s proud to have won the award and credits her students and staff for the recognition. “It’s such an honour to be recognized by The Learning Partnership and my community as one of Canada's Outstanding Principals. I am proud to represent the Halton District School Board, which continues to set high standards in educational practice for all staff to ensure student success,” said Sahai. The recognition honours the “unique and vital contributions” of principals in publicly-funded schools, according to The Learning Partnership. “I don't stand alone in accepting this award, as I have also had the support and encouragement of many mentors, staff and my family. However, students ultimately empower me to embrace my role. The ability to work with our young people and our future leaders is truly rewarding.” Alka is an exceptional leader and administrator, involving her school community in creating inviting and safe environments for students to learn. She feels that the most important role of the principal is to set the vision of the school, to provide a safe and MB BUSINESS MAGAZINE MARCH 2016

inclusive learning environment where students, staff and the community feel valued and feel a sense of belonging. Sahai says “the integrity of everyone involved in our schools should always be held with respect. Only then can learning happen in a risk free environment”. She is data-driven and uses

perceptual data to assess if student engagement aligns with the school’s direction. Her enthusiasm and genuine interest in her students create a positive energy in the school. Under Alka’s leadership, teachers co-learn and explore strategies for 21st century learning to increase student success. Students are invited to bring their own devices, as well as use the school’s 3D printer to encourage creativity and inquiry. Results are consistently improving, with math assessments at 10% above the provincial level for both Grade 3 and 6. Alka is an

empowering principal who works on realizing possibilities. Sahai said the position of principal is fulfilling and satisfying in so many ways, whether it’s meeting with students with special needs who visit her in her office to show their latest work or by making a difference in student’s academic, emotional and social development. “It’s heartwarming when you see students demonstrate their accomplishments and be proud of what they have achieved” she said. Alka has made a wonderful effort to promote inclusion and multiculturalism by hosting events such as “Newcomer’s Tea”, which connects new parents (to the Country and/or the Community) with other parents at the school as well as to community resources. Each Spring a “World Tour” event is hosted by families from Captain R. Wilson P.S.. This is an opportunity for the school Community to celebrate and embrace their unique cultural differences through picture displays, food and dance. Not only has Ms. Sahai made an impact on her school community, she has also been able to share her educational experiences and beliefs when she was selected to speak at an International Women's Day Breakfast. International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. The event brought together students, teachers, and community members from across Oakville.

BRITISH COLUMBIA TO ADD

OMPUTER {OD!NG < TO SCHOOL CURRICULUM

T

he B.C. government unveiled plans Monday to introduce computer coding in its school curriculum, addressing a chronic skills shortage in one of the few areas of the Canadian economy that is doing well-technology. “Every kindergarten to grade 12 student will have…the opportunity to learn the basics of coding,” Premier Christy Clark said at the opening of a two-day provincial government-backed summit on technology in Vancouver. Ms. Clark announced the change, first revealed Sunday by The Globe and Mail, as part of a broader strategy to deliver more support to the province’s tech sector. It’s a shift for a government whose economic agenda has largely focused on natural resources, though B.C.’s flourishing tech sector employs 86,000 people-more than forestry, mining and oil and gas combined. The government unveiled the first piece of the strategy last month, creating a $100-million venture fund to finance startups. Canadian political leaders have increasingly championed the digital economy after largely overlooking the sector in recent years. With oil and other commodities trading at multiyear lows, the economy teetering and a new class of startups gaining traction and disrupting traditional industries, Canadian politicians are hearing they need new, effective approaches to foster innovation and support tech startups. A group of successful Canadian tech entrepreneurs, for example, recently warned Ottawa that a Liberal election pledge to fully tax stock-option gains above $100,000 would stunt their ability to attract talent. Meanwhile, a chronic skills and talent shortage is expected to worsen, with Canada forecast to be short more than 180,000 information, communications and technology workers by 2019, according to one recent report. “Computer science skills … are increasingly critical as technology is where all future job growth lies,” said Jeff Booth, CEO of Vancouver’s BuildDirect Technologies Inc., a web platform for ordering construction materials with 330 employees. “There is already a war for talent in technology that has companies like ours searching the world for the best engineers. … It’s very possible that computer coding and other technology skills may become as critical as reading and writing.” Last week, during a visit to Google’s new Canadian operation in Waterloo, Ont., Prime Minister Justin Trudeau acknowledged, “We need to do a lot better job of getting young people to understand what coding is and how it’s important.”

The new B.C. coding curriculum will be introduced across all grades over the next three years, featuring new standards in mathematics and sciences and a new and redesigned “applied design, skills and technologies” (ADST) component to improve students’ abilities to solve problems and think creatively. The way students are taught will change starting in kindergarten, through “exploratory and purposeful play” that stimulates an aptitude for ADST. As they age, B.C. students will learn about computational thinking and learn the various aspects of programming. By the end of Grade 9, the government “students will also be able to experience basic coding,” a government source said. Ms. Clark said it’s her goal to ensure coding education “doesn’t just become an opportunity for every child to take part in, but to ultimately make it mandatory for every child from kindergarten to grade 12 to learn about coding and how it works. Students in middle grades will learn how to code, debug algorithms and use various coding techniques, including visual programming, while high-school students will have the opportunity to specialize in particular areas of technology. B.C. follows Nova Scotia, which announced last October it will introduce coding to the curriculum this fall. Coding was also recently added to school curriculum in Britain and is coming in Australia.

While most Canadian provinces offer some computer-science classes and technology in classrooms, the net result is a patchwork, bolstered by outside initiatives aimed at addressing the coding deficiency in schools, such as Google-backed program Codemakers, which seeks to expose 100,000 Canadian children to programming.

curriculum. … Whoever figures out how to teach computer literacy first will have by far the most prepared work force. It’s hard to overestimate the potential of that.”

Members of the Canadian tech community praised the coming B.C. initiative. “Providing a science, technology, engineering and math curriculum early in a child’s education is fundamental in advancing Canada’s innovation agenda,” said John Ruffolo, CEO of OMERS Ventures, a leading Canadian venture-capital fund. “Hopefully, the rest of Canada will follow [B.C.’s] lead.”

The B.C. government announced other initiatives to support the tech sector, including making it easier for tech firms to sell to government.

SEAN SILCOFF

Canadian tech entrepreneur and investor Jevon MacDonald said, “It’s amazing to see different provinces taking the initiative to include computer programming in our public-school curriculum,” and called on provinces to jointly develop national coding education standards. “This would mean that no Canadian child would miss out.” Tobi Lutke, chief executive officer of Ottawa-based Shopify Inc., one of Canada’s most successful startups, said it’s essential to vanquish “one of the greatest generational divides in history” by encouraging widespread computer literacy. “To the initiated, computers can solve nearly any workflow problem,” he said. “There is a reason why almost all entrepreneurs are ‘techies’ these days-they are the only ones that can teach computers new things. It’s an unfair advantage and entirely unnecessary. Computer programming is not hard and it is a whole lot of fun. “Essentially every company in the world is either turning into a software company or is in the process of dying because of a software company,” Mr. Lutke added. “In this great reshuffling of the business world, we need Canada to end up with a good share of the newly created and scaled companies. There is tremendous upside for Canada in making computer literacy part of the core

Canada’s housing sector, which seems to be holding up the economy right now and which survived the housing bubble and economic collapse suffered in 2008 by Canada’s largest trading partner and neighbor, the USA. Canada’s ‘other’ economy, manufacturing and exporting, has suffered long term decline and decay but, ironically, might see a renaissance thanks to the low domestic currency. You can bet that a lot of US corporations in both the manufacturing and services sectors are looking to outsource more and more to Canada to take advantage of the relatively low price of Canadian-Dollar denominated labour. Beyond energy price linkages, the USDCAD pair seems to follow very long term trends. Trend up for 5 years, trend down for 5 years.

he last time the Canadian Dollar had a 60-something US cents handle the calendar read 2003. Most retail forex brokers we know today hadn’t yet been founded. Affectionately known as the Loonie thanks to the picture of a loon on one side of the coin (Canada’s two-dollar coin is called a Toonie), the CAD is rapidly approaching a dubious milestone, as its value relative to the USD continues to deteriorate. Late Friday the USDCAD was trading at about 1.4173, meaning each Canadian Dollar is now worth just 70.6 US cents, down from 72 cents at the beginning of this month and from more than 85 cents at the beginning of 2015. Not so long ago, in early 2011, the Loonie (Canada’s oneo-dollar coin is called a Toonie) was worth MORE than the USD, trading as high as USD $1.06. The question many traders (and worried Canadians) seem to be asking is:

How low will it go? And, when will it turn around? The Loonie is clearly tied to the price of oil, which also continues to plunge to new depths. However it isn’t just that. Part of the problem is that Canada’s entire economy is tied to energy prices, including

Canadian Dollar in USD, past 10 years. Source: XE.com

So the question for those who follow the Loonie simply is:

ARE WE FINALLY NEAR THE END

OF THE CURRENT 5 YEAR DOWN

CYCLE, WHICH STARTED IN EARLY 2011? OR WILL THIS CANADIAN WINTER FREEZE LAST EVEN LONGER?

HOW TO TRAVEL THE WORLD TOGETHER WITHOUT K ILLING EACH OTHER

Taking your relationship on the road can be a rewarding shared experience-if you can avoid driving each other crazy.

T

raveling with your partner is terrifically satisfying. Shared experiences are fulfilling; your relationship can find itself strengthening in new ways.

However, stress and challenges are a reality in all relationships, and especially so when traveling full time. Many people have asked how we manage our relationship on the road, considering that we are not only life partners but traveling and business partners as well. We gave this question some thought and reverse-engineered our approach. Here’s what we came up with. We imagine many of these will resonate with you-whether you plan to take them around the world or just around the block.

1. DITCH THE “PERFECTION NARRATIVE”

“What’s the perfection narrative?” you ask. It’s the storyline you see in books or on TV that implies marriages are supposed to be perfect. Anything less and you’ve failed. We counter with this: Manage your expectations. No relationship is 100 percent perfect; each of us is human. Marriage (or any committed

MB BUSINESS MAGAZINE MARCH 2016

long-term relationship) is hard work. Sometimes it thrives, sometimes it falters and sometimes it inches along toward shared goals. Recognize that you are not perfect and neither is he; perhaps you can accept your partner’s faults and he can love you for all of yours.

2. COMMUNICATE ACTIVELY

After all this time together, it’s easy to believe you can read one another without having to speak. Active and honest verbal communication should never go out of style. Ask questions and share, particularly if something is bothering you.

3. KEEP CHECKING IN

Before you begin any journey (travel, life, business, etc.), it is crucial that you align your individual and shared goals. This is often obvious. What’s less obvious: Don’t assume this alignment will remain forever. People change over time; goals change. Check in with your partner periodically to confirm that your goals are still aligned. Keep in mind that you don’t need to wait for occasions like anniversaries and the new year to do this.

Ways To Be Interesting During Your Interview By: Kim Eisenberg Congratulations, you’ve scored the interview! But now what? You’re going to do your homework to research the company, practice your elevator pitch, and pick up your suit from the dry cleaner’s... Exactly like your competition. Getting an interview is a huge hurdle to clear, and a wonderful sign that you’re on the right track with your job

1.

GET YOUR INTERVIEWER TALKING We know that the more you make me talk, the more interesting I’ll think you are. Humans are funny like that. Use this knowledge to your advantage, and immediately engage all the people you meet in conversation – about them. Whether it’s the receptionist, the HR manager, or your future boss, ask people questions about themselves, and do as much as you can to draw them out. At the end of your interview, they’ll have a much more positive impression of you.

search efforts. Now it’s time to shift your focus to becoming a rock star candidate.

During Your Interview Approach your interview with the expectation that your competition is equally well qualified. Having the skills and wanting it badly aren’t going to cut it in today’s market. You need to figure out specific ways to stand out and be interesting. Here are some strategies to do exactly that:

2.

BE PREPARED WITH INTERESTING QUESTIONS Don’t ask the same old tired questions as every other candidate. You can combine this strategy with #1 and ask your interviewer about his experience at the company or perspective about a hot new product or

MB BUSINESS MAGAZINE MARCH 2016

20

service. You can also use this as an opportunity to flex your creative powers and ask questions that show you’ve not only done your homework, but that you went above and beyond to creating solutions.

5.

USE THE BRIEFCASE TECHNIQUE When preparing for your interview, create an overview of how you plan to tackle your first 30, 60, and 90 days on the new job. If you’ve done your research on the company and position, you’ll have sense of what kind of strategy you’d employ to start adding value right away. Write it down in a page or two, and pull it out (of your briefcase – hence the name) at the end of the interview to leave behind as a form of marketing collateral for product “you.”

3.

BE PREPARED WITH INTERESTING ANSWERS Most people will answer situational & behavioral questions with straightforward examples from their careers. Differentiate yourself by being prepared to share stories from other areas of your life that are equally impressive. Did you survive a solo ride on your motorcycle to the Arctic Circle? Create a hip-hop website that gets hundreds of thousands of unique visitors per month? Create a non-profit to save a historic building in your hometown? Share those tales in ways that highlight your problem solving skills, internal motivation, and unique style.

6.

MIND YOUR BODY LANGUAGE: MIRRORING & POWER POSES Interviews are stressful, and it’s easy to get tense and physically awkward. Pay attention to your interviewer’s body language and do your best to mirror it. Mirroring tends to disarm people and make them feel more comfortable with you. To really impress them, use power poses immediately before your interview, in private, and avoid weak poses at all costs. Everyone’s subconscious will perceive you in a more flattering, confident light.

4.

SHOW OFF YOUR STYLE Conventional wisdom says you should stick to neutral, conservative styles for your interview appearance. In general, it is best to go with classic suits and subtle accessories. But if you’re the type of person who normally has some artistic flair to your look, you don’t need to stifle it completely. Choose one or two ways to let that style shine through – a bright accessory, unique jewelry, or moderately funky hair. As long as you look professional, it’s okay to have an accent.

PREDICTIVE MARKETING ANALYSIS TOOL (By Sulaiman Khan)

Companies these days face big problems of handling huge amount of customer data. This information is only useful if this can lead to maximize the revenue and generate profit. E-Commerce is playing a vital role in eradicating the monetary or information loss by introducing Predictive Marketing Analytic Tools. These tools help companies understand the customer’s behaviours of their buying nature in future, for instance, the products they are the likely to buy, when will they buy it and how much would they like to spend on that based on their past behaviours.

Demand for such instruments exists since companies battle with how to transform huge information into important bits of knowledge. Marketing consulting firm Milward Brown has conducted a survey in 2015 by the name of “Getting Digital Right”. According to that, there were only 14% respondents were good enough to mention confidently the use of big customer data. Companies hire a marketing specialist to make use of this information which is very expensive and only big firms can afford to have such internal resources. Existence of companies is there in the market that provides cloud-based alternative solutions for the predictive marketing analysis, which to an extent reduce the cost being faced by the companies to hire the data analysis scientist. Out of so many reasons, below are the main reasons why a company should use the Predictive Marketing Analysis:

1

Profit Maximization by getting involved with the customers:

We have an exemplary existence of companies such as Amazon, Netflix, etc. using the same predictive analysis tool offering their customer suggestion for the products similar to what they

MB BUSINESS MAGAZINE MARCH 2016

have already bought. Day-by-day, analytics are adding up the algorithms understandable to the machines pertaining to the customer’s behaviour which are now becoming affordable even for the smaller companies.

2

Targeting the segmented markets for the promotion:

3

Lead generation for B2B markets:

Analysis tools help bifurcating customers in different segments according to their age, gender, geographic location, buying power, etc. and to target them for promotions of similar products and maintaining the communication between companies and customer.

These tools are making a huge impact on Business-2-Business market as well as the companies can reach to their desired buyers by their business nature, the size of the company, buying requirements etc. Showcasing analysis tools will turn out to be all the more effective in the coming years as machine learning moves forward. Both B2C and B2B vendors can likely pick up an upper hand at this early selection stage by utilizing these administrations.

IS THE PERSONALITY OF INSURANCE CHANGING?

BY

One of my favourite anecdotes on the culture or personality of insurance in general and insurance executives specifically is from when I was invited to talk to a group of students about digital communities in FSS. [1] The audience was a group from a specialized elite course for financial services, very smart young people groomed for management positions in the banking and insurance industries. I was very nervous before the presentation; after all, my audience were all digital natives, i.e. exactly the people who were supposed to be using those digital communities, and who should be much more knowledgeable about them than I was. But guess what? Not only did I know a lot more about the topic than my audience (phew!), they pretty much all felt that using digital communities was a waste of time. My conclusion: it seems a conservative mindset is a prerequisite for joining the industry in the first place. That was 8 years ago, and the tide might just be starting to turn. When in 2012 I could still blog about “7 Reasons why Financial Services Providers Don’t Get Social Media”, a year ago some were already working on the goal of becoming a social insurer. And now consider this:

|

Compared to their financial professional peers in other regulated sectors, today’s insurance executives are faster moving and are more extroverted, according to a study by executive search and leadership firm Russell Reynolds Associates. And contrary to popular belief, “insurance executives’ psychological attributes showcase the dynamic personality that in many ways defies the industry’s stodgy stereotypes,” said Limore Zilberman, executive search and assessment consultant for the global firm. Being a researcher myself, I would really love to have a look at the raw data here-87 is a fairly small sample size. The results do feel right; especially with younger execs, it certainly feels like insurance has become more “modern”-but my personal theory is that this is not so much infusion of “young blood”, but rather of insurers hiring execs from outside the insurance industry. If true, that in itself would already be a culture change. (And I don’t have the data to back it up.) In our IBV studies we repeatedly stress the increasing disruption of all industries by technology, demographics, economics etc. Is the culture of insurance starting to respond?

DRIVERLESS CARS

By Andrew Lo

C a n a d i a n s Wa n t I t , Te c h n o l o g y M a ke r s B u i l d i n g I t The results of a survey released by Kanetix.ca last week revealed that one in four Canadians are ready and cannot wait for the arrival of the driverless car. In addition, Canadians felt that driverless cars would improve safety and greatly reduce collisions and drunk driving. We took to the streets of downtown Toronto to ask how people felt about driverless cars to get more colour on this survey. I had the opportunity to join the CES 2016 (formerly Consumer Electronics Show) media team in Las Vegas last week and heard major announcements by automakers, electronics manufacturers, and software developers on their progress toward making the driverless car a reality.

sense of that data. It promises to give cars a cognitive ability to navigate complex situations and to avoid collisions. Blackberry – Did you know the Blackberry operating system QNX that powers smartphones also powers 50 million cars’ infotainment system worldwide? It does! The QNX software technology is the ideal operating system for cars because it has a small footprint and can process in real-time. For example, it is embedded in all Audi cars. It can be the premiere platform for makers of driverless cars to run their software.

Ford – Ford is looking to triple the size of their driverless car testing fleet. They believe more testing will make the technology safer. They are also testing a new LIDAR sensor that is super small Using lasers, LIDAR allows cars to be aware of their environment so they can navigate without human intervention. Toyota – Toyota believes that artificial intelligence is required for cars to navigate complex environments. They are setting up two research centres in the U.S. to further this research and are investing $1 billion into the effort. Kia – Kia is jumping into the race by investing $2 billion by 2018 to develop driverless car technology. They recently obtained a driverless car licence in the state of Nevada to begin testing. Volkswagen – The CEO at Volkswagen makes the promise that the company is being reimagined to deliver cars that have zero emissions, mitigate accidents, and will be smart and comfortable. To start, their first priority is to fix the 11 million cars affected by the emissions scandal worldwide. General Motors & Lyft – General Motors announced a $500 million investment into the ride-sharing company Lyft. They believe that the first commercial application of the driverless car is ride-sharing. IBM – IBM has made available the Watson Developer Cloud. They believe that in order for driverless cars to work, cars must be connected and collect data about the environment. Watson can process and make
