FRANNET OF THE HEARTLAND PROVIDES SUPPORT SYSTEM TO FRANCHISEES

The trajectory of so many entrepreneurial journeys is not often a straight line. For FranNet of the Heartland Franchise Specialist Blake Martin, the path to supporting the successes of other franchisee-entrepreneurs started with building a home care company in Michigan 20-plus years ago before home care was a common option.

As Martin tells it in his signature podcast, “Heartland Franchise Guy,” it was “induction by fire” into the franchising industry. Ultimately, working on the development of the franchise system for Omaha-based Right at Home resulted in his foray into consulting and the Heartland.

Martin noted two defining moments that convinced him that he needed to make a career out of franchising consulting.

“Almost every one of the prospective ownership candidates we worked with during those early years was dealing with a sick family member or some other personal tragedy,” he said, a nod to Right at Home’s initial steps toward the development of a franchise system. “Knowing that this home health care franchise concept was designed to help people through such situations was rewarding. I really felt like this was the type of work I was supposed to be doing.”

Martin said he may never have considered the career if not for

missing the second Easter in a row with his youngest son.

“At the time, I was traveling overseas in a country that doesn’t celebrate this holiday,” he stated. “When I realized I was missing these key moments with family, I knew I had to make a change because you can never get those moments back.”

Officially, Right at Home founder Allen Hager and then-CEO Brian Petranick played pivotal roles as mentors after he moved to the metro in 2004.

“One of the early lessons they both taught me was how to think introspectively,” Martin said. “They had a simple rhetorical question they’d apply to franchisors who were considering a change to their franchise systems: ‘Will it both improve the bottom line of our franchisees and enhance our brand value?’ If not, you should reconsider.’”

Martin moved forward with franchising and, in 2016, consulting with FranNet of The Heartland, and he has never looked back. In Martin’s seven years in his present role, he earned a prestigious industry award, “Top Performer,” in the franchise consulting sector. He said he is quick to link his successes with the successes of those entrepreneurs that he works with, day in and day out.

“Four of my previous clients that I helped become franchise

owners were recognized as top performers or ‘Franchisees of the Year’ by their respective brands,” he said. “I think it really demonstrates how the Midlands region punches above its weight class on the national franchising scene.”

Additionally, Martin’s online and community presence carries some heft; since formally launching the “Heartland Franchise Guy” podcast in the summer of 2021, nearly 100 episodes have been produced and he has also attracted considerable momentum from the business community with a series of other outreach efforts –from meetings and webinars to seminars.

“I helped co-found the Entrepreneur’s Education Collaborative back in 2017, and we’ve conducted roughly 70 webinars and seminars for the Midlands business community,” he explained. “These events help educate local professionals and aspiring entrepreneurs about small business startups and operations, but closing deals isn’t where my involvement ends.”

He stressed how it’s “very important for me to remain in touch so that I can help them grow, nurture, and succeed as business owners.”

But arguably the biggest achievement for Martin applies to his life outside of the office and day-to-day work with successful and aspiring entrepreneurs.

“I’m a family man at heart and nothing is more important to me than spending quality time with my wife and two sons,” Martin summed up. “Owning my own franchise consulting practice has afforded me a work/life balance that I could never have achieved working in corporate America.”

Furthermore, he has made the most of his interest in fitness and exercise, coaching his son’s little league team (his “true happy place”), participating in tennis, sand volleyball, and training for an upcoming 50 Mile March event from Lincoln to Omaha to raise funds and awareness for home veterans and vets with mental health challenges. Along these lines, both Martin and his wife are committed to volunteering and giving back.

“We want to make a difference in our community, even if it’s only a dent,” Martin said.

In part, he is a trustee with the Business Ethics Alliance, active with Small Business Administration coaching through Omaha SCORE, sponsors and judges the Children’s Business Fair of Omaha, represents Nebraska and Iowa’s “FranFit” program, is an advisory board member for SourceLink Nebraska (an online repository of resources for entrepreneurs), and volunteers with “Boots to Business,” the power behind the 50 Mile March and

other initiatives to help military service members transition back to civilian life.

Industry Marches Forward

The industry has made big strides, too. Notably, franchisors’ platform models allow for operational resource-sharing across brands.

“This advancement has allowed franchisors to marshal their combined resources to combat obstacles such as labor shortages, which CONTINUED

has been a pretty consistent problem in the Midwest,” Martin explained. “Now, brands and concepts have been designed and launched that require few, if any, staff to grow and scale territories.”

More recently, Martin described the industry’s response to the pandemic as “commendable.”

“The majority of franchisors swung into action quickly, devising new operating procedures that allowed their franchisees to adapt and weather the storm,” he said. “Many paused royalty payments but increased their spend on marketing and advertising. As for the after-effects, franchise brands have increasingly invested in innovative digital platforms and online services designed to streamline operations and build closer networks among their franchisees.”

Bankers have taken notice.

“I’ve seen many lenders who now look more favorably on funding for prospective owners, even in an atmosphere where we’re dealing with considerably higher interest rates,” Martin added.

He also said it’s safe to say that franchising has “leveled the playing field,” promoting opportunities across a wide swath of formerly underrepresented groups.

“Entrepreneurs come from all age groups, income levels and demographics, and the industry has responded by developing even more concepts that appeal to semi-absentee or semi-passive owners,” Martin said. “This aspect has generated a lot of attention and capital from a new class of investor-owners who see franchise ownership as a means to diversify their business portfolios.”

In fact, Martin said the first franchise system ever was female-owned: Harper Method Shops. Reportedly, the Buffalo, New York-born salons were started in 1891 by a former servant, Martha Matilda Harper.

In his firsthand experience over 20 years as a franchise consultant, Martin said he has found a certain mindset is well-equipped to succeed as an entrepreneurial business owner.

“There are three distinct qualities you should nurture and develop if you’re considering an entrepreneurial future; these include resilience, optimism and curiosity, or ‘ROC’ for short,” he remarked. “If you can set your mind to developing these qualities and you live by these ideals, I believe you have a much better-than-average chance of success in achieving your goals.”

OMAHA FRANCHISE COMMUNITY

We asked local franchise owners: What is your “why” behind owning a franchise and the specific industry you are in?

RYAN HAHN CO-OWNER, THE EXERCISE COACH

My wife Sommer and I were a part of starting a new church. The experience was very fulfilling and life-changing (not to mention we determined that we worked well together). We wanted to experience this again, but this time for additional reasons such as financial independence, flexibility, and vocational purpose. With those motivations along with the impact we saw happening through the church, our filter for identifying an industry and ultimately a company was our ability to transform lives and create community. The fitness industry and The Exercise Coach is a way to do both. Science-based strength training with our caring coaches and our proprietary equipment is making a difference for the 80% of individuals for whom the conventional fitness options and approaches don’t work.

GABRIEL RUIZ FIBRENEW OMAHA SOUTH

With a franchise, you’re in business for yourself, but not by yourself. You have a team behind you to help you get started and help you over any bumps along the way. Often times you’re also not starting at zero, as the master franchise has not only a proven business model but the tools to let you hit the ground running. Versatility. This particular franchise opens up the doors to a lot of different types of businesses, instead of being stuck in just one industry. With that, the model is fairly recession-proof, and pandemic-proof. It’s ecofriendly, and cost-effective.

KATIE DESANTIS OWNER, VITALITY BOWLS SUPERFOODS CAFÉ

As an Omaha native, I was motivated to bring something innovative and beneficial to Omaha when I moved back from the East Coast five years ago. My husband and I observed that despite Omaha’s rich culinary scene, there was a noticeable gap in the area of healthy, fast casual dining.

The merits of franchising are numerous. A primary advantage lies in the solid support from corporate, and the reassurance of a business model that has proven to be sustainable in multiple markets. The blend of corporate backing and our ability to input innovative leadership and ideas has proven to be a rewarding experience.

We are profoundly thankful for the warm reception and ongoing support from the Omaha community during our first four years operating Vitality Bowls in Aksarben and west Omaha. I continually seek collaboration opportunities with other local franchise owners, particularly within the wellness sphere. It gives me great satisfaction to provide healthier dining alternatives to the Omaha community!

TOM RIEDL OWNER / CEO, 101 MOBILITY

For me, owning a franchise made perfect sense. I wanted a business with an established model and record of success. The “why” behind why I chose 101 Mobility is that we have the opportunity to help people on a very personal level. Finding a solution so that someone can regain or maintain their independence and freedom is very rewarding. It’s a great feeling when our team completes a job and the customer is so happy with the result. A typical response we get is “Thank you so much - I haven’t been able to get up my stairs without being afraid of falling for several months. Now I can get around my entire house with ease.”

JAY FROSCHEISER CO-OWNER, CLUB PILATES OMAHA/PAPILLION

It takes hard work and dedication to build any business startup into a successful company but buying a franchise can give entrepreneurs a running start.

Why Buy a Franchise?

Froco Pilates, LLC, operates three Club Pilates studios in Omaha with a fourth opening in Papillion this summer, according to Jay Froscheiser, who owns the firm with his wife, Angelia.

“My wife and I were looking to diversify our income as my corporate job of 30 years started to show signs it was no longer aligned with my principles,” Froscheser said. “With the help of a franchise broker, we came across Club Pilates and fell in love with the business model. We liked the idea of having a proven system and brand that had shown success in multiple geographies and demographics.”

The Froscheisers have found marketing support is the biggest advantage of owning a franchise. While driving their own marketing initiatives, they have a vast amount of assets to draw from in creating marketing campaigns.

“Networking with other owners is an incredible advantage as well,” Jay Froscheiser said. “At least once per week, I have calls with other Club Pilates owners to collaborate on problem-solving or learning best practices from each other.”

Play It Again Sports started in the Minneapolis area about 40 years ago and now has almost 300 stores across the United States and Canada, according to Omaha franchise owner Richard Messina.

The company buys, sells, trades and consigns brand-new and quality used sporting goods and fitness equipment.

“There was no way I’d have been able to open up just Messina

Sporting Goods,” Messina said. “I wouldn’t know where to start. I didn’t have any retail experience or a business degree.”

Play It Again Sports was a good fit. The franchise was a proven model, and the franchisor offered training and many established vendor relationships. Messina opened his Omaha store in September 2014.

The Grounds Guys of Gretna and Elkhorn is a personal groundskeeping company for both residential and commercial properties. Its services include landscaping, wall gardens, lawn and yard maintenance, holiday lighting, snow and ice services according to Gary Maes, who owns the franchise with his wife, Tish.

After retiring from the U.S. Army, Maes wanted to own a business where he could make a positive impact on his customers’ lives.

“The Grounds Guys not only offered me to be part of a great structured system that has been successful, but it also offered the ‘family’ I lost when retiring from the Army,” he said. “Their core values matched my values and what I stand for.”

Mark Fredrickson owns two franchises — Clothes Bin, a clothing and textile recycling company, and Redbox+ Dumpsters of Omaha, which provides large roll-off containers for job sites.

“Going with a franchise helped ease the point of entry into a new business,” he said. “It gives you a lot of resources at your fingertips. It is really all laid out for you. You still have to execute but the roadmap is there.”

Nikki Wulff recently celebrated the five-year anniversary of her franchise, Assisted Living Locators. The company is a no-cost service to help primarily Omaha area seniors transition to another living

situation, whether it be independent living, assisted living, memory care, or a nursing home.

“I help seniors and their families identify what kind of place would be best for their care and finances,” she said. “I’m compensated by the senior living community, so that’s how it is free to them.”

Wulff chose to buy a franchise for the training support and because there’s a network of 150 other owners she can talk with and learn best practices from.

“[The company helps] you with your startup, your business cards and your branding,” she said.

Dustin Sparks opened the first KidStrong, a childhood development organization, in Omaha in January. There are 85 in the nation.

Sparks, a veteran of franchising, said he likes owning a franchise because the systems needed to run a business are already in place.

Getting Creative

While the Froscheisers use the franchisor’s guidance, they can incorporate their own local knowledge and preferences to create a Club Pilates unique to their locations.

Messina noted that aside from the hours the store must be open, Play It Again Sports, there is very little oversight otherwise.

“In the end, we know our local market best,” Messina said. “Each store across the U.S. has a different niche market. The ones in the mountain states do a lot of snow sports, the ones in California do a lot of surfing. For us, baseball and softball is by far our biggest category; that’s where we focus a lot of our time, attention, floor space, inventory and advertising.”

Operational flexibility is key to Fredrickson.

“It is your business to run,” he said. “Outside of doing something to tarnish the franchise or give other franchisees a bad image [you can] do what you need to do to be as successful as possible. When it comes to marketing there are brand parameters but it’s your flower to grow. There are marketing components that come with being part of a franchise. More than that [it] is the resources at your disposal. You don’t have to feel like you are on an island trying to figure it all out.”

Creativity is a must, and the franchisor gives its franchisees creative room.

“We have a lot of flexibility,” Maes said. “We can provide any services as long as it doesn’t cross our sister companies or do business that conflicts with The Grounds Guys in general.”

“[Assisted Living Locators is] very flexible,” Wulff said. “I basically can take care of my business and my clients how ever I see fit, so long as I’m not tarnishing the brand or doing anything negative. I really am running my own individually-owned business.”

Sparks said his franchise is able to cross-promote and have partnerships that allow for growth.

Growing Business in Nebraska

When Messina first opened, his biggest mentor was the owner of the Play It Again Sports store in Lincoln.

“She really helped me out with advice and suggestions, and we went in together on certain orders [to get some discounts],” he said.

Being part of a franchise enabled Messina to reach out to other Play It Again Sports franchisees, often at regional and national trade shows and conventions.

With well over 260 The Grounds Guys owners nationwide, there are

lots of resources for growing the business.

“They all have knowledge in every aspect of the industry,” Maes said. “All you have to do is call your business coach or another owner and ask questions.”

Having a national presence gives franchises a boost in branding and referrals.

“There are lots of owners in other cities who will refer [clients] to me because certain family members might live in their city, but their parents live in Omaha, or vice versa,” Wulff said. “[Also] if I have clients in other cities, I’m able to connect them with a local owner.”

Wulff likes Nebraska’s business climate because the state is fairly recession-proof.

“We do a really good job of making it through the hardest times, whether it is a recession or COVID,” she said. “[Those things] affected a lot of other places much more than [they] did Nebraska. I think our cost of living helps. You have competitive pricing in the senior living market.”

“The business climate in Nebraska, and Omaha specifically, continues to amaze me,” Froscheiser said. “Our community thrives off of and is starved for good food, entertainment and services. The population growth, strong economy and low unemployment continue to drive a need for more businesses to serve them.”

Buying a Franchise

“When shopping for a franchise, do not take the discovery process lightly,” Froscheiser said. “If it’s your first time, consult with someone with experience in addition to your franchise broker. Talk to as many current and, more importantly, former franchisees of the brand as possible.”

Messina suggests following a passion.

“Otherwise, you may not be able to give it the full commitment it takes to get it through the very tough initial stages,” he said.

Do your due diligence and listen to what other franchise owners have to say about their experience with the business model and the franchisor’s support or lack of support.

“Have an exit strategy before even starting the business,” Messina said. “Is it something you plan to open, grow, then sell in five to 10 years or do you plan to keep it until you hand it off to your kids, or something in between? Having in mind a long-term plan will affect how you operate your business for tax purposes.”

Know yourself, know your weaknesses, know how or who can help you overcome your shortcomings, Maes said.

He suggested making a good budget plan to pay for wages and know your employment pool—it’s more difficult to find employees today than it was eight or 10 years ago.

“Always stay hungry,” Maes said. “Learn the business and not just the money part, and you will be successful.”

Wulff suggested looking into a couple of different options in your chosen industry.

“Get a feel for the corporate team, the training and the support they will provide,” she said. “Call other owners who already have a business in the franchise. Call high performers and also low performers to get their perspective.”

In the end, you’ll know it’s a good fit if you’re willing to do the tough parts.

“You’re going to have bad days and hard conversations, and it’s easier to have those if you’re truly passionate about the business,” Sparks said.

SYNERGY BRINGS WORKFORCE SOLUTIONS TO FOREFRONT

Editor’s note: This is the second in a series covering mental health in the metro.

Besides raising funds for the new $110 million Behavioral Health & Wellness Center on 89th and Dodge streets, the Mental Health Innovation Foundation (MHIF) had another major challenge to contend with: staffing the 107,250 square foot center.

Nebraska, not unlike other states, has been lacking adequate behavioral health care providers for decades. The Human Resources and Services Administration found that of Nebraska’s 93 counties, 80 are classified as mental health shortage service areas.

“I think even more staggering is that a third of counties don’t have any behavioral health provider at all,” said Dr. Marley Doyle, executive director of the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska (BHECN).

Limited providers to oversee clinical students, unpaid internships, and a lengthy training process are all major barriers for potential behavioral health care professionals.

Cross-Institutional Collaboration

Ken Stinson, who leads MHIF as chairman, said when planning began in early 2021 the workforce shortage was one of the first items flagged.

“We said we can’t go out and plan a facility, raise money for it and build it and then hope there’s people who can work there,” he said. “We had to do something more proactive.”

Conversations with inpatient mental health facilities and hospitals identified mental health technicians and mental health nurse practitioners as two in-demand careers that could drastically improve the landscape.

Together, with the help of CHI Health, MHIF brought together the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Metropolitan Community College, Bellevue University, Creighton University, and Iowa Western Community College to find solutions.

On the education side, staffing to support students through their clinical experience on their path to becoming mental health nurse

practitioners was a significant bottleneck.

Dr. Tina Chasek, chair of UNO’s Clinical Counseling Department and associate rural development director for BHECN, explained that due to accreditation rules, student positions are limited. UNO is unique in that it has a clinic on campus where students get 40 hours of experience before transferring into an internship.

“We can only have one faculty member to six students in their practicum experience,” she said. “We had 100 applicants for this round of admissions and based on our ratios we could only take 37.”

She said that of the 200 students in graduate-level counseling programs, roughly 150 are in clinical counseling.

Students looking to move into an internship also face similar challenges as well as the prospect of working 260 hours for free.

“Most internships aren’t paid because practices can’t bill for an intern’s work,” Chasek said. “Plus, they’re taking time out of their billable hours to supervise the interns. That’s why the ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) grants were game changers.”

Opening the Floodgates

In 2022 the Nebraska Legislature dedicated $25 million in ARPA funding to address the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the shortage of behavioral health professionals. As Nebraska’s workforce development center, BHECN was tasked with distributing the funds.

“When we got the funding our initial thought was we were going to have quarterly applications over three years,” Doyle said.

“What ended up happening is in the first round we got nearly 200 applications. Nearly $50 million in funding requests. We awarded about $20 million.”

The second round of funding, which closed in April 2023, also finished with $25 million in requests and winners have yet to be announced.

The first round of funding provided funding for 83 unique projects focused on four categories: behavioral health training and education opportunities, telebehavioral health in rural areas, behavioral health workforce COVID-19 projects, and funding for the supervision of professionally licensed providers.

For UNO this meant a clinical supervisor could be hired bringing the number of students supervised in their clinic to 12 at a time.

For CHI Health it provided a pathway for current nurse practitioners to become certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (NP’s) through Creighton University. Robin Conyers, CHI Health division vice president of behavioral services, said this will allow NPs to treat their regular patients whom they already have a relationship with.

Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners are able to diagnose a mental health illness and treat the illness, whether that’s through prescribing medication, psychotherapy, or a combination.

“That then creates access because our partners are comfortable caring for folks in a primary care setting,” she said. “That then allows for those really specialty appointments to be available for individuals that need specialty care.”

The grant will cover tuition for 15 students over the course of three years. The program spans about a year and is 100% online, and CHI is able to complete the hands-on training in-house, eliminating common barriers for full-time professionals.

Dr. Catherine Todero, Creighton College of Nursing dean, said there also may be travel stipends.

“We’re trying to mitigate anything that might be perceived as a barrier to students taking this opportunity,” she said.

Accessible Entry

While upskilling the current workforce is an essential piece of the puzzle, the coalition of higher education institutions also recognized time and money as a barrier.

Common careers in the field – psychiatrist, physician assistant, psychiatric nurse practitioner, licensed psychologist, professional mental health counselor, marriage and family therapist, and clinical social worker –require a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree.

That’s one of the reasons MHIF and its institutional partners zeroed in on mental health technicians. Not only was it one of the most requested positions, but it also doesn’t require a degree or certificate to start.

What Bellevue University, Metropolitan Community College, and Iowa Western Community College wanted to pursue were betterequipping technicians.

Gary Stessman, who is an associate professor at Bellevue University, said burnout happens quickly when technicians don’t understand how a mental health issue manifests. Stessman knows firsthand; he’s a licensed independent mental health practitioner and provisionally licensed alcohol and drug counselor with over 14 years of experience.

He said if a technician doesn’t understand a person’s trauma

response or underlying mental health issue, it’s easy to take a negative reaction personally.

“If they understand trauma and its impact on brain function, or if they understand developmental disabilities and psychiatric disorders, they can separate the behavior from the patient and not personalize it,” he said. “When you don’t personalize it, then you can stay focused on making sure the patient receives the treatment they need.”

The mental health technician certificate program that Bellevue University, as well as IWCC and MCC, have launched teaches students those foundational skills and more.

The hope is that by better-preparing technicians they will stay in the field longer, providing stability, and possibly deciding to receive more training.

“It’s an entry-level job, but if they’re working at a hospital they might have benefits like tuition assistance, which allows them to take a look at other avenues they could explore,” said Dr. Michelle Eppler, dean of Bellevue University’s College of Arts and Sciences. “They could go the counseling, social service, or psychiatric nursing routes.”

In the end, it all comes back to creating a better future for Omaha, and the greater Nebraska area.

“The key here is, the larger the pool, the better off everyone in our community will be,” Stinson said.

WHAT ELSE IS possible?

Welcome, 2023! I love the New Year. New beginnings, new adventures, new possibilities, new choices. A blank canvas for us to perhaps choose something different and create another masterpiece along the journey of our lives.

As I look back over the past 30-plus years I’ve been in the publishing/media business, I realize where I am today is largely because of the choices I have made. Some of them created more ease and more joy in my life and business, and some of them did not.

We are all a work in progress and constantly evolving. There are hundreds, thousands—make that millions—of choices we can make at any given time.

We all are making choices. Every moment in every day there are choices to make. We are choosing what we wear, what we eat, what we do, who we do it with, where we work, how we nurture our bodies or how we don’t. We choose happiness and joy and we also choose sadness and struggle.

What I love about CHOICE is that you always have a CHOICE. If you choose something and it doesn’t work out or you change your mind, you can choose again. When I hear myself saying, “I have no choice,” that is a choice. Gary Douglas, founder of Access Consciousness, encourages us to choose in 10-second increments. There is no right or wrong choice, good or bad choice. There is just CHOICE.

Ask yourself, “If I choose (fill in the blank), what will my life be like in a year, five years, ten years? (Or perhaps, in keeping with the above admonition, in the next 10 seconds?) Will this choice create more in my life or less?”

Only you can answer that question. My life continues to change by asking such questions. What are you choosing in 2023? And remember: If it isn’t working out or feeling light—choose again!

What else is possible (in the next 10 seconds, 10 minutes, months, years?) That begins with your next CHOICE!

What else is possible? ~ ANDEE

CRAFTING DRINKS WITH PURPOSE

BRICKWAY BREWERY & DISTILLERY PUTS DOWN ROOTS

After spending more than two decades immersed in the beer industry, Zac Triemert’s passion for beer and distilling remains.

Triemert got his first taste of the brewing world in 2001 when he began working at Upstream Brewing Co. He enjoyed it so much that he decided to pack up and move to Scotland where he received a master’s degree in brewing and distilling. Upon returning to Nebraska, Triemert got to work on his next undertaking — opening a distillery. He founded Lucky Bucket Brewing Co. and eventually sold the company before embarking on his latest endeavor, Brickway Brewery & Distillery.

Prior to becoming a brewmaster, Triemert was a microbiologist. The career change was prompted by the passing of his father, which made him realize life is too short to not be doing what you love. In honor of his late father, Triemert crafted a home brew dubbed Jerry’s Pale Ale.

“I gave everyone in the family two bottles: one to drink and one to save,” Triemert said. “I gave a little speech, and some people laughed and some people cried. It was then that I realized I had changed the moment with

EO NEBRASKA: SUMMER FAMILY FUN DAY

EO Nebraska members believe the best life is the right balance between business, personal connections and family. Maintaining that balance can become tricky and often one or two get left behind. Above all, the hard work and sacrifice is for our family.

On June 3rd, EO Nebraska is excited to host its 2nd annual Summer Family Fun Day. A day full of fun activities for all ages. Featuring food trucks, sports courts, the world’s largest slip ‘n slide (maybe not the largest but it’s huge!)

It will be a day your family will not soon forget.

This is just one of the many amazing events Nebraska entrepreneurs experience in addition to great learning events, networking, practical experience shares and so much more.

If this sounds like and an organization you would love to be a part of, reach out to Julie Hockney, EO Nebraska membership chair. She’d love to have coffee with you and share more about what EO Nebraska has to offer.

What are you waiting for? An exciting entrepreneurial experience is waiting for you!

that beer. And that’s the reason we do what we do — it doesn’t matter if you’re celebrating, commiserating or commemorating, Brickway is going to be there for you.”

Today, the brewery and distillery, which produces beer, vodka, gin and whisky, offers group tours for those who are curious to learn more.

Triemert, who has been a member of EO Nebraska for over a year, said the organization and its members have helped him succeed as a business owner.

“In preparing for each monthly meeting, I need to figure out what my biggest challenge is at the moment,” Triemert said. “And, before our next meeting, I solve that problem. Having that accountability is really helpful.”

Iowa Legislature Adjourns 2023 Legislative Session

FOCUS SHIFTS TO DEVELOPMENT OF 2024 PRIORITIES

As we move on from the 2023 State Legislative Session, it is important to not only celebrate some of this year’s legislative successes but also note the importance of being strategic and deliberate in how we go about setting, educating our members and Legislators, and advocating for the Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce’s State Legislative priorities.

This year, we saw several of our priority issues addressed, including the passage of medical malpractice reform via a $2 million cap on noneconomic damages, a $5 million cap on noneconomic damages for commercial trucking companies, childcare assistance that expands eligibility, and increases reimbursement rates for half-day childcare, internet/sports gaming receipts to allot $7 million in sports wagering funds to the state’s general fund to strengthen the Endow Iowa Tax Credit, creation of a levee improvement fund, the Registered Apprenticeship Act, positively impacting the Governor’s state reorganization bill, and IEDA’s technical budget, which includes changes to the renewable chemical tax credit and the innovation fund and adds an Iowa distillery representative to the renamed “Wine, Beer, and Spirits Promotion Board.”

On the opposite end of the spectrum, we saw a few bills fall short this year, meaning a renewed focus on them in 2024. These include the Mega Sites Program, Land Redevelopment Trusts, and Port Authorities, to name a few. These, in addition to property tax, will be focal points heading into the 2024 Session and will require additional advocacy and education in the interim. Proactivity and a unified approach from business advocacy groups and our

CHAMBER GROWTH

partners will be key to ensuring we achieve our objectives and impact these issues in the most meaningful way possible.

This places the CB Chamber and our partner organizations in a great position to lead in advocating for each of these policy issues. Chambers and economic development organizations can be the convener of all interested and affected parties to ensure all Legislators are armed with the best information possible to move these issues forward. We will all need to lead in this effort to bring applicable parties together to discuss the implications and benefits of these complex issues and provide an immense value-add to our members, investors, and partners in the process.

Therefore, expect the Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce to empower the Public Policy Committee and membership, even more, to provide their thoughts and insight regarding priority issues, and take that information and create the best priorities and strategy possible heading into the 2024 Session.

The 2023 Legislative Session was a very productive one, but we feel 2024 can be even more productive and impactful for Southwest Iowa and the State of Iowa.

In closing, this Legislative Session showed us many things, but the importance of being thoughtful and proactive in advocating for our priority issues, while being the mission-driven community convener and voice of the local business community, will be of the utmost importance.

We look forward to these policy discussions and are honored to advocate on behalf of our 650 members and amazing community. We do not take being the voice of the Southwest Iowa business community lightly, and we appreciate all our members and communities do to support our work!

We are extremely fortunate to have a strong and supportive Board of Directors, membership, and community, and we are excited to work with our partners to grow our footprint in a way that will allow us to have an even greater impact in our region.

As a way to continue to serve and demonstrate value to our members, the Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce a new strategic partnership with Livability Media, a premier community marketing partner to promote Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie County, and Southwest Iowa on a national stage in an effort to attract new residents and employees to our great employers and community!
