Are you looking for a stepping-stone to improve your life and employability skills? Our Progression Studies department focuses on meeting the needs of students with a range of additional and special educational needs, including students with learning difficulties or English as a second language. These courses are designed to help you prepare for adulthood and develop your independence, community participation and employability skills.

Upon completion of a course in Progression Studies, you may have the opportunity to progress onto an appropriate vocational programme or Supported Internship.

Studying with us

Our dedicated and experienced team are on hand to support you throughout your studies. Our Additional Learning Support Team can also help with a range of special educational needs. We also offer daily drop-in sessions to students who need a little extra support. You’ll develop your communication skills and confidence through a range of community projects and take part in enrichment activities.

Taking you higher with work experience

You’ll have the opportunity to participate in meaningful work experience as part of your course. This will help to develop your confidence, self-esteem and other employability skills which are essential in the world of work and highly regarded and valued by employers. Work experience will allow you the opportunity to develop your communication skills. You will also develop and build skills working as part of a team, problem solving, time management and motivational skills.

Your tutor and placement coordinator will work with you to find a suitable placement and ensure reasonable adjustments are in place to help you build and develop employability skills in a vocational area to meet your needs. In some cases, 1:1 support can be offered so that you are able to achieve a work placement.

Our Vocational Steps programmes are designed to prepare students to move on to a course in one of our many vocational areas across College or progress to employment. Each pathway will help you develop your qualifications, skills, and confidence to move into your chosen subject area at Level 1. The programmes are designed to be practical and will involve you getting hands-on experience to develop your specialist skills. We will support you to engage positively with all aspects of the programme, focus you towards achieving your ambitions and will be on hand to help you in a variety of ways both in and out of the classroom.

You will also be given regular feedback in your practical sessions to ensure your skills are always developing and meeting the high expectations of industry professionals. If you are working towards maths and/or English, you will complete exams as part of your qualification but you will also get regular feedback from your tutor so we can make sure you are as ready for your exams as you can be. 1 year
