4 ’The Ance Catania Architecture Award is meant to be an award to creative value, on the condition that the legality and ethics of the constructive process are fully respected. The award is not intended as a tout court celebration, but as a special attention towards those who push forward their experience, their knowledge and their passion in their daily activity.’’

Andrea Vecchio

Ance Catania President

‘’Quality in the changes on the territory can be accomplished even through projects that are simple and smart, like the works selected for this years Ance Catania Architecture Award: detached housing projects, the refurbishing and redirection of industrial buildings, small intervention projects carried out with limited funding. Quality architecture is achieved not only through the creativity of the planners, but as a result of a complex procedure that involves a variety of actors, most importantly the commissioner and the constructor. Choosing the candidatures to be put forward for the evaluated of the jury has given us the chance to monitor the state of the architecture in Sicily. This has provided us with the chance of appreciating works of quality that have been built in recent years but not been given the attention they deserved because the media continues to give space only to the usual big names.’’ Giuseppe Nannerini

“L’Industria delle Costruzioni” editor

‘’Architecture is one of the principal activities of man. Man’s intervention modifies the land he inhabits, often contributing massively in its destruction, sometimes improving it or making it pleasurable or remunerative. We have many examples from the past that testimony how despite the wear and tear and the passing of time, many buildings are celebrated as positive examples. Unfortunately, I think the present will not leave us many positive testimonies of architecture because of the chaotic growth it is going through. Despite of this there are a few exceptions that we have tried hard to find so that we can give meaning to the activity of man, of planners, of constructors, but also of commissioners: the protagonists of these transformations. The award is not meant to be a celebration, but a special attention towards those who push forward their experience, their knowledge and their passion in their daily activity. All the projects participating, all these professionals have equal dignity and equally deserve to be awarded.’’ Andrea Vecchio

AWARD FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF ARCHITECTURAL CULTURE IN SICILY The award is assigned to the personality who has contributed most to the development of architectural culture in the region by publication of papers, projects and buildings in Sicily.

AWARD AWARD TO A YOUNG SICILIAN DESIGNER For this section dedicated to the Young Sicilian Designer, the winner is Davide Cammarata from Caltanissetta for his project on the refurbishment of detached housing in Caltanissetta. This project is an example of how it is possible to recover and transform an existing building that is devoid of any characteristics of quality and projectuality. One of its features is the original roof that has been boxed allowing for any form of alternative energy production fitted on to it to be unseen.

DETACHED FAMILY HOUSING IN CALTANISSETTA MOTIVATION This project is an example of how it is possible to recover and transform an ordinary building that was devoid in any feature of quality. The materials used are very traditional: white plaster, lavic stone, wood. The housing is protected from the excessive heat on the west wing by a full volume that is emptied only where the entrances of the two floors are. These are a square unique cut into the pure white façade. The original roof has been boxed. This allows for any alternative energy system to be hidden from sight. Very correct in scale and shape, the project is distinguishable for its immediate frankness expressed by the use of simple geometries and means. The building represents a happy integration into a difficult context. It is discreetly inserted into the landscape, despite it being representative of a clear contemporary sign. We hope that such a sign may trigger a virtuous process of regeneration of the building trade. For its size and manner we may consider it to be a therapeutic intervention of urban acupuncture. ‘’Ing Emanuele Rimini’’ AWARD FOR NEW CONSTRUCTION BUILDING The second section, dedicated to the memory of Emanuele Rimini who was the president of ANCE CATANIA between 1991 and 1996, has awarded the three persons involved with the construction of the council offices of Castelvetrano. This building is in fact the first Italian example of construction on lands confiscated from the mafia. The awards for the commissioner went to the mayor Giovanni Pompeo, the engineer Giuseppe Taddeo was also present, for the planner the award went to the learning association composed of Orazio La Monaca (team leader), Santo Giunta, Leonardo Tilotta and Simone Titone. The construction firm awarded is the Ingegneria e costruzioni srl in Messina.

7 COUNCIL OFFICES IN CASTELVETRANO MOTIVATION The building has been completed on land confiscated from the mafia in the northwest area of the city. This area of the city had already been structured but is still devoid of any social activity. The building is arranged on a horseshoe shaped plan. The ground floor of the building is very wide and from this area a parallelepiped shaped volume emerges neatly.

AWARD FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF ARCHITECTURAL CULTURE IN SICILY This award goes to the architect Italo Rota who has worked very hard in Sicily. Paolo Buzzetti the national president of ANCE consigned the award. During his performance Italo Rota entertained the guests at the event by telling them about some of the current aspects of world architecture starting from emerging realities such as India, how everyone should be involved in the responsibility and attention to cities, and about his own experience in Sicily as a project planner, where: ‘’to work you must become Sicilian, you must think, hear and see like a Sicilian’’.

Italo Rota has been co-author with Gae Aulenti in the Gare d’Orsay in Paris. He followed important preparation of museums, amongst them Louvre, urban projects in Nantes and the project of the Lugano Casino. A confirmation of his talent is given to us also the mediateques carried out in Anzola and San Sisto, two of the most important things built in Italy in recent years. In both cases the spaces are winning, with an effect that you could only define homely, far from the intimidating libraries of the past, they are articulated into anonymous reading rooms with rows of tables organized in a perfectly geometrical figure. In the strategy Rota uses, the sensual-ness of the flowing shapes and the transparencies and colours in every range deserve a special mention. They make up a surreal habitat that goes beyond the modern and exceeds the post-modern. In Sicily Italo Rota has literally sculpted the seafront in Palermo. The seafront has been adorned with skittles, portals with rounded shapes and vivid colours, and benches with bright tones. The park was immediately adopted by the Palermo people because it touched the emotive chords of its public, especially the children who are entranced by the totem shapes hanging between dream and magic. The library, also done up in Palermo, has shown us that today it is possible to intervene on highly valuable pre-existing buildings with a baroque formality that respects the context but is not hindered by formal inhibitions.

AWARD

Perfectly integrated with the surrounding environment thanks to its essential stereometry and its planimetric organization, the volume skilfully creates an interesting relationship between the building and the public space around it, serene relationship that does not give way to any consolatory justification or populist rhetoric. The worthy objective of this project is to create spaces that may favour the collective life of a community that is trying to oppose itself civilly to degraded system. This objective is pursued through the respect towards the urban traits, the value of space and its hierarchic succession, and the efficient articulation of its parts.

MOTIVATION

8 An unconventional Approach Disruption MCA Group is a Knowledge Company actively carrying out, in partnership with its clients, supporting projects in Organization in the areas of Development and Human Resources, Training, Firm Consultancy, Advertising and Integrated Marketing Communications. The firm was born from the encounter of Consultants and Training Specialists with a professional and cultural background in Work Psychology, Organization Sociology, Communication and Semiotics, Economy and Engineering. This allows it to obtain a global and integrated vision of the organizations and to answer fully to any business demands the clients may have. During its partnership with Ance Catania, MCA has designed, coordinated, and carried out the ‘’Un Lavoro Sicuro Sempre’’ (A Safe Job Always) communication campaign in May 2007, and in 2008 a new type of marketing communication campaign based on the un-conventional method of the Guerrilla Marketing, which is a macro category of Social Marketing. By virtue of the consolidated partnership the decision was made to attempt a new strategic option for the promotion of the Ance Catania Architecture Award. This is based on the innovative concept called Mixed Media, a method born to unite different media for the creation of a disruptive and persuasive policy. MCA invited Ance Catania to an active approach to creativity. Using the ‘’Disruption’’ method Creativity emerges from the usual, it breaks conventions, it is noticed and talked about. This is an approach to integrated marketing that renews the levers of marketing and advertising with the intent of breaking static conventions and of going beyond them. It is an alternative to traditional marketing. Questioning what works and the tendencies in post-modern society, it favours a direct involvement with the Citizen/User promoting a process of generation, sharing and elaboration, which leads to the creation of new and ‘original’ products.

Mixed Media Advertising SYNOPSIS Ance Catania, in partnership with its consultants, has always been committed to an unconventional type of integrated communication marketing. This year for the occasion of the prestigious Ance Catania Architecture Award 2009 it has decided for a mixed media approach, where the relationship with the beneficiaries is direct and explosive. The creative process has been designed around the following methodological deductions: IDENTITY Given the importance of the award, as an award but also as a sculpture, the identity was built around the representation of the award itself, an object intended and structured as a symbol and as its own negation in terms, citing Magritte and De Saussure, that mark the award/prestige dichotomy favouring the content and not only the sign. REPUTATION All action has been structured within a strategic multi-channel plan that favours the new media (advergame), viral strategy (word of mouth, idea infection) and traditional media. RELATION A web unit press has been dedicated to power an intense relationship with people through the use of the 2.0 web technology (blogs, forums, chats, Youtube, Facebook, Myspace, Gmail, Wordpress, Twitter, etc.). In conclusion, the focus of any kind of marketing campaign is always on You, the beneficiaries, the people to whom our campaigns are directed, using the newest communication technologies, the daily spaces, the unusual, hoping to grasp and to transfer the enthusiasm that ANCE has always pushed forward so that we become more active and aware.

10

Viral Advertising Viral marketing is a kind of non-conventional marketing that exploits the communicative ability of a few interested subjects in order to convey the message to an exponential number of final users. It is the evolution of the word of mouth but it is different because it is the voluntary intention of the promoters of the campaign. Initially viral marketing was based on the originality of the idea. Something that in virtue of its content or nature would be able to expand a lot more quickly throughout the population. Like a virus, the idea that may be interesting for one user is passed on to other users, and so on. This way it expands very rapidly by principle of word of mouth, the knowledge of the idea. The strategic choices inherent to the project: An idea apparently not of ANCE Catania to raise the wait and restless curiosity. Viral Video concerning the false discovery of the Award statue. Highly creative Postcards in limited number distributed strategically on a national scale into the official Promocard circuits. Ubiquity of action on the web (social networking, etc)

CLAIM: THIS IS NOT AN AWARD VISUAL: STYLIZATION OF THE AWARD CHANNELS: WEB, POSTCARDS, STICKERS

Social Network Contacts From mass culture to a massively parallel culture. MCA’s press office consists of copywriters, buzzers and identity keepers who have created different virtual identities based on the following lines: MEDIUM-HIGH EDUCATION, AGED BETWEEN 23 AND 60, SPECIALISED IN ARCHITECTURE AND CORRELATED THEMES, SOCIALLY INCLINED. With the object of individualising, connecting and sharing architectural content within protected and private contexts that are hard to reach through conventional communication channels. These guidelines have created the following identities: CARLO WATT – 53yrs – ARCHITECT – MILAN, ROME, CATANIA GIULIO RAVATI – 32yrs – ARCHITECT – MILAN IRENE PUGLISI – 38yrs – ARCHITECT – NAPLES, CATANIA GIORDANO CARDUCCI – 40yrs – ENGINEER – MILAN – ROME LORENA CACCIAPUOTI - 38 yrs – ARCHITECT - NAPLES FRANCESCO COSTA - 41yrs - ENGINEER – RAGUSA NADIA DE ASCENTIS - 31yrs - ENGINEER - VERONA GINO TENCO - 43yrs - ENGINEER - LECCE CARLO GRASSO - 37yrs - ARCHITECT - SIRACUSA MATILDA RADICE - 48yrs - ARCHITECT - BOLOGNA GEMMA SPINELLI - 41yrs - ARCHITECT – REGGIO CALABRIA

Social Network Carlo Watt

A likeable subject who writes and shared cultural content. Up until today, Carlo Watt, an avatar created by one of MCA’s teams specialised in copy strategy and identity keeper, has more that 500 friends and answers to dozens of e-mails, friend requests and blog feeds a day. The reasons for the success of this false user are to be found in his typicality and fortunate creativity. Democratic, open, adult, mature, he chooses the words to write and the events to share and the friendships to favour with extreme care, exactly like a real person would. This confers to the social spectator the features of authenticity and trust. Following up we have a visual representation of the enormous network generated by this user alone, but lets not forget the other users cited that have also been a success, even if not as intensely.

Website/advergame ‘‘The web is primarily a subjective cognitive experience that is perceived as a group’’ (Mcluhan) The advergame is an advanced type of advertising. It is crated to steer the message in advertising to the point that without the message the game would be pointless. We may also talk of advertainment, or the union of advertising and entertainment.

ADVERGAME

In this case, the success of the game is proportional to the diffusion and fame of the award, boosted through the activity on the social networks and collateral support (viral video). However, for the game to be a success two ingredients are necessary: the possibility of playing fro free and a final prize. The game has been made of simple steps to follow that are graphic and intuitive, in flash programming. After these simple steps the visitor is asked a simple question:

’What is a prize for you?’’

The game and the players have given us excellent results form different parts of the world thanks to the interconnection of the web. Many replied with enthusiasm to our simple question. One young adult, a Chilean student replied, winning for her simplicity and sagacity, as follows:

Name: Aurora Email: aurora_espinoza@hotmail.com Place: Traigue - CHILE Message: SI, IO QUIERO UN PREMIO. Sum laboreprovid maionseditia nobis et, sectio. Innovation in respect of the law wins by Rosanna Di Mauro Ance Catania The night of Tuesday the 14th of July at the Cortile Platamone chosen for the award ceremony of the Premio Archittetura Ance Catania (the Ance Catania Architecture Award) was full of artistic suggestions and thoughts, thanks also to the winners chosen by our jury out of the 44 selected projects that our advisors picked out.  The Award consisted of a statuette made in melted bronze, an original piece created by the artist Antonio Santacroce especially for this occasion. For the section reserved to the Young Sicilian Designer, the architect Davide Cammarata from Caltanissetta won with his project of refurbishment of a detached family house in Caltanissetta. The project is an example of how it is possible to recover and transform a pre-existing building completely devoid of any features of quality and projectuality. One of the winning traits of this project is the boxed roof that can, if wanted, house any type of alternative energy production while keeping it away from view. The second section, dedicated to Emanuele Rimini’s memory (he was the president of ANCE Catania between 1991 and 1996), awarded the three subjects involved with the construction of the council offices in Castelvetrano. This building is the first example of building on the lands confiscated from the mafia in Italy. For the Council the mayor Giovanni Pompeo was awarded, the Head Engineer Giuseppe Taddeo was also present. For the project Orazio La Monaca (team leader), Santo Giunta, Leonardo Tilotta and Simone Titone were awarded; the construction firm Ingegneria e costruzioni Srl of Messina was the third award. The awards were given by Irene Rimini and her daughter Stefania. The engineer Nicola Colombrita, who worked with Emanuele Rimini for many years, gave a moving speech on his figure within Ance Catania. A special mention is due to the project by Pasquale Culotta,

23 who recently died, for a system of three squares in the centre of Castelvetrano. His daughter Tania was called upon the stage and recalled the passion and enthusiasm that accompanied all Culotta’s work as an architect, a professor and an academic. At this stage in the vent we also the precious contribution of Giuseppe Nannerini, the engineer chief editor of ‘’L’Industria delle Costruzioni’’ (the construction industry), and the architect Luigi Prestinenza Puglisi who started a debate on stage with all present. The award for the development of architectural culture in Sicily was given to the architect Italo Rota, who has worked hard for Sicily’s development. The statue was given by the engineer Paolo Buzzetti, national president of ANCE. During his performance Italo Rota entertained the guests by telling them about his experience in India as an emerging reality, by talking about the responsibility and care towards cities that should involve everyone, and, lastly, about his own experience as a planner in Sicily where, he says, ‘’ to work one must become Sicilian, one must think, feel and see as a Sicilian’’. As the evening went on there were various artistic moments. The actress Elisa Di Dio recited some excerpts from Italo Calvino’s ‘’Le Città Invisibili’’ (the invisible cities). The accordionist master Nunzio Belfiore played a selection of popular pieces. The ballad singer Paolo Zarcone sang his composition written for Ance Catania, ‘’Saruzzu e Masino’’, about two friends from a different social class but united by the common passion for architecture. And finally the journalist Elvira Seminara intervened with her monologue on the recovery of cities, their liveability, and how we should repossess spaces, rhythms and routes that have been forgotten. An excellent performance by Marta Francocci, a roman journalist who has worked with Rai Educational Channel with Giovanni Minoli’s staff. In conclusion to this edition of the award, Andrea Vecchio declared that:’’ the Ance Catania Architecture Award wants to be an award to the creative quality of architecture where the respect for the law and the ethics of the entire constructive process are always in place. It does not want to be a tout court celebration but signify a special attention towards those who push forward their professionalism, their experience, their knowledge, their passion.’’
