STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Patrick Ames Ames has spent most of his adult life building things. He naturally thinks about how things are made and how to make them function better. Ames has been a yacht captain, coffee shop owner, property manager and general contractor. All the time building and fixing things both personally and professionally. Construction work is very strenuous and Ames needed to find a way to use his skills without the physical toll construction work requires. This led him to Metropolitan Community College and the noncredit courses in Upholstery. After taking five courses and workshops at MCC, Ames has opened a growing business out of his home in Elkhorn, Skyline Upholstery. “My background in construction and attention to detail makes upholstery particularly appealing,” Ames says. “I really enjoy working at home and transforming people’s furniture into pieces they can continue to use and love.”

Ames found the classes at MCC flexible and fun. He has gotten to know others in the field and stays in contact with teachers and classmates. He credits MCC instructors Kathy Foust and Steph Keene for much of his success. “It’s a great group of colleagues to bounce ideas off of and problem solve when you are working on a difficult piece,” says Ames.
