Porters Neck members, Liz Coville, Karin van Drumpt, Roberta Smith and Patty Screen recently visited McConnell Golf sister property, The Reserve They said, "We had such a fun time playing golf at the Reserve in Pawleys!"

Over 100 Breakfast BundlesDonated

We are SO PROUD of PNCC junior, Adley McCall for her community service efforts Her mother Leah had this to say, "Thankful for incredible, generous neighbors and my wonderful girl for making and donating well over 100 “breakfast bundles” and more to Nourish NC . She really enjoyed this, and Nourish NC was beyond appreciative! They said they give so, so many of these out."

AdoptAHighway

As part of our ongoing community outreach efforts, Porters Neck Country Club recently signed up to 'Adopt A Highway' Many of you have asked about Dennis, the gentleman we often pass on the way to the club, who is consistently picking up debris along Porters Neck Rd and Bald Eagle Lane Jason reached out to Dennis and invited him to join our team as well as join us for dinner, as our guest, at the club. Yesterday was our inaugural 'pick up' day for 2023 and while Dennis couldn't join us, (this time) he did greet us outside of his home to see how we were doing. We look forward to having him join us next time!

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS

What made you apply for your first job at Porters Neck?

I was working at Woodlake CC outside of Pinehurst and I resigned around the beginning of December. While I was OK taking some time off from a job that was basically a 7 day a week job, I was needing to find a job because I was getting married in May. My future wife and I decided we would like to live in Wilmington. I applied to a few courses in town and eventually got an interview at PN. Ron Thomasson was the head pro at the time, and he hired me to be the First Assistant. I don’t think it was 2-3 months and Ron left to take another job and soon after that I was named the Head Golf Professional.

When was your first official day and do you remember much of it?

Around the 1st of March in 1998 It was a long time ago so don’t remember too much, but I do remember how dark the pro shop was

What are the biggest changes to the golf course since your first day?

The course itself has really changed very little Hurricanes and tornadoes have changed the look over the years due to the loss of hundreds of trees I have seen a few renovations done, greens twice, bunkers multiple times, addition of the new practice areas All have been great for the Club Probably the biggest change is the amount of homes that have been built along the course When I got here in 1998, there were no or only a couple homes on holes 13-18

What's your favorite memory of the last 25years?

I should have kept a journal! There are so many In the early years we had movie stars, sports stars, famous coaches, vice presidents visit PN, that was a cool time

How has the job of a Golf Pro changed over the past 25 years?

The role has transformed from that of a shopkeeper doing the odd repair job and giving an occasional lesson to one that’s far more dynamic with PGA pros involved in at least some, if not all areas of golf club management as well as coaching, PR, finance, retail and sharing general golfing expertise in equipment, technique, rules and golf technology

Today’s PGA pros must be well versed in technology and not only when it comes to instruction or club fitting. In an ever more digital world, tee bookings have moved online, as have competition draws, score entry, and the World Handicap System. A PGA professional must have a full grasp of all of these and be able to explain to members and visitors who need some guidance.

Switching from everything being done by done and handwriting to almost everything being done online has been quite a change. It takes some getting used to for many members and us more ‘seasoned’employees. We’re always happy to walk people through new apps and the functions within them but it’s certainly time consuming.

What's your favorite part of the job?

I just like coming to work every day. I have been lucky through the years to have a good staff, and the membership has always been enjoyable to be around. Who wouldn’t want to work here every day?

Final Question: How have you managed to look the same??

A case of PBR a week

Peanut Butter Fudge

Over the past several years, I’ve noticed I'm becoming more and more like my father I can recall that he had a passion for peanut butter and chocolate, typically a peanut butter chocolate milkshake Below is a recipe that blends the two together perfectly While you’re at it, a glass of milk or even a scoop of vanilla ice cream sandwiched between two of these cookies might be just the thing to satisfy your sweet and salty cravings

Ingredients

2 Cups All-Purpose Flour

1/2 Cup Dark Cocoa Powder

1 TSP Baking Soda

1/4 TSP Salt

Directions

1 Cup Butter, at room temperature

1/2 Cup JIF Peanut Butter

1 1/2 Cups Granulated Sugar

2 Large Eggs

2 TSP Vanilla Extract

4oz Semi-Sweet Chocolate, melted

2/3 Cup Milk Chocolate Chips

2/3 Cup Peanut Butter Chips

In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt; set aside In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat butter, peanut butter and sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes Add eggs, one at a time, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed Add vanilla and beat until combined Reduce speed to low and add flour mixture, beat to combine Add melted chocolate and beat until combined Fold in milk chocolate chips and peanut butter chips

Transfer the dough to a sheet of plastic wrap, wrap it up and refrigerate for 3 to 4 hours

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line 2 cookie sheets with parchment paper.

Roll a heaping tablespoon of dough into a 1½-inch ball and place it on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining dough, spacing the balls about 2 inches apart.

Bake until cookies are set in center and begin to crack, about 10 minutes. Let cookies cool on sheets for 2 minutes before transferring cookies to wire racks to cool completely.

GolfCourseCare

Taking care of our course is not the sole responsibility of our maintenance staff. The players are an integral part of how the course is maintained. Here are a couple of things that as players we should always do.

Always repair your ball mark on the green If you hit a shot of more than 10 yards, you are making a pitch mark on the green Please take the time to repair your ball marks An unrepaired mark takes almost 2 weeks to heal

Fill in your divots in the fairway with sand. This acts like a topdressing for the grass and allows for a more uniform surface for the grass to grow in. If you are walking and do not have sand, at least try to kick in the sides of the divot as best as possible

Rake the bunkers – Who gets mad when they hit in a bunker and it is unraked? Have respect for your fellow member and rake the bunker after you play out of it Also, other than the greens, the bunkers are the most labor intensive part of the course So, the better we rake the bunkers, the less time the staff has to be in them

Pull Carts – Pull carts should stay at least 10 yards from the putting surface at all times. This allows for better growth of the turf in compressed areas thus making it easier to play a shot from. Everyone likes a little grass under their ball to chip from Golf Carts do most of the damage to the course, especially when course is wet When we are cart path only, stay on the path at all times! Don’t try to sneak into the natural areas or don’t try to go around the cart in front of you That’s when most of the ruts appear The cart path in many places keeps the water from draining and therefore is extremely soft in areas near the path.

Soon we will be playing all 18 holes Yay! Please remember to follow the guidelines on all holes We are still in early Spring and all the sod has not taken root yet

1 Please enter and exit the bunkers at the lowest point This may not be near your ball, but this helps with minimizing deep footprints and helps keep the new sod in place. This procedure should always be used when in a bunker.

2 Please DO NOT play off newly sodded areas The sod has not had a chance to grow and root to the ground

3 Keep carts of all newly sodded areas

PLEASE RAKE THE BUNKER BEFORE EXITING
