TURF TALK

COURSE UPDATE "Good Looking Greens"

One of my favorite comments I hear often from Members is how the greens are “looking good”. Of course this ranking scale of greens is a subjective scale that is going to fluctuate depending on the person doing the ranking. Unfortunately, many people associate the health and vigor of the putting surface based on its color alone. From a playability standpoint color has no effect on how the surfaces play. Due to this fact color is in not a major factor in any of the greens practices that we do on a weekly basis. In fact, the color of the putting surface actually has the opposite effect on playability than what most people think. When you see a dark lush putting surface you can be assured that it is going to be a very soft and slow surface from a playability standpoint. On the opposite side of the scale when you see an off colored to light brown putting surface you know it is going to be a hard fast playing surface. The three main factors involved in maintaining a firm and true putting surfaces are the amount of water in the root zone, the growth rate of the grass, and lastly the organic matter accumulation. From a management standpoint the easiest way to maintain a putting surface would be to keep them on the soft and slow side. By just watering the greens heavily each night and applying large amounts of fertilizers this can easily be done. The more difficult management style is going to involve monitoring conditions daily and adjusting inputs to promote a firm true surface. To accomplish this, we are constantly monitoring moisture levels, growth rates, and organic matter. Moisture content in the rootzone is checked multiple times a day using a TDR soil moisture meter. By using these meters, we can pinpoint areas that require moisture, allowing us to apply the minimal amount of water that is required. The growth rate of the grass is checked daily by monitoring the amount of clippings we catch when mowing the surfaces each morning. We then adjust our weekly fertility levels to achieve our desired clipping amounts. Lastly organic matter accumulation is monitored and adjusted thru aerification practices and frequent light topdressing. We are also able to measure putting surface firmness using a device called the TruFirm. The TruFirm measures the firmness of the surface by dropping a weighted ball a set distance onto the surface and measuring the resistance. The TruFirm gives us numerical data we can use to track and evaluate our progress over time in surfaces firmness. Over the past four to five years we have been working on increasing our topdressing and aerification frequency to improve our surface firmness. This steady increase in the amount of sand we apply to the surfaces each year will continue to improve firmness and playability. As an example in 2016 we applied 5 truckloads of sand to the putting surfaces over the course of the season. In 2017 and 2018 this number was increased to 8 loads each season. Last year we improved yet again applying 10 loads of sand or close to 250 tons over the season. This management system allows us to keep the putting surfaces drier and firmer each year, which in turns creates a smoother, quicker, surfaces. Remember the next time someone ask you how the greens “looked” when you were out playing, remind them that it is not a matter of how they “looked”, it is a matter of how they played. Hopefully the answer will always be that they played great. ~ Ryan Blair, Certified Golf Course Superintendent

Wearing a mask has become a new daily fashion statement for most of us when we go to the grocery store, going to pick up our takeout at a restaurant, and in our fitness facilities. After working out with a mask myself and training my clients with masks I have found that these masks might be the best tool that I have never thought of. Many people have been complaining about breathing while wearing the mask. However, the mask may not be the cause of their problem. Proper breathing technique is to inhale air through the nose and exhale through the mouth in a controlled way. When exercising with moderate to high levels of intensity our oxygen exchange rate increases causing a need for more air to get out of our lungs. In terms of anatomy, our nose is a smaller cavity to exhale all that carbon dioxide out of the body, so our mouth becomes the natural choice to exhale with. When not in control, you also begin to inhale through your mouth. The mask can get pulled into the mouth this way and make it feel like you cannot breathe. The lesson? Use the mask to help control your breathing and learn to force air in through your nose and out your mouth.

SUN EXPOSURE AND BLOOD PRESSURE It has been noted by many news outlets and social media influencers that getting outside is an amazing way to boost immunity and increases health. Is there truth behind these claims or are they just words meant to give us a way to cope with being stuck in-doors? Some research done by a Scottish dermatologist, Richard Weller, looked at the effect of sunlight on blood pressure. It found, in a nutshell, that the UV light in direct sun exposure releases nitrates in the skin and can lower blood pressure. Similar findings back up his findings from The American Heart Association. The main take away for you right now, is that blood pressure can be reduced by direct sun exposure for up to 10 minutes a day, or up to 10 minutes before burning your skin. Lowering blood pressure is the first step in a long line of preventatives towards lowering the risk of heart disease.

Holston Hills Country Club 5200 Holston Hills Rd. Knoxville, TN 37914

HOLSTON HILLS GOLF PRO GOLFS 180 HOLES FOR CHARITY! Tuesday, May 28th Joey Batuello woke up early Tuesday morning. After consuming the breakfast of champions, a few donuts and some pre-emptive Advil, he made his way to work, Holston Hills Golf Course, on his day off. “What’s Joey going to do on his day off,” Batuello rhetorically asked. “He’s going to play golf.”Typically it’s a round of golf, maybe two if he’s feeling adventurous, on Tuesday, May 28th he played 10 for more than just his love of the game. The Golf Pro and several assistants, at the Country Club of Asheville invited others to join them in a golf marathon to benefit Folds of Honor, a scholarship group whose purpose is to aid spouses and children of fallen or disabled service members. Batuello quickly joined the cause. “I have some family that served and two of my best friends served in the Navy,” he explained. “So it’s an absolutely perfect reason to do it. So I was like yanno let’s just do it.”Holston Hills Country Club quickly jumped on board sending an email out to their patrons explaining what Batuello was doing and asking for donations. Batuello set out with a goal of raising $5,000, the equivalent of one scholarship, the club had met that in donations in less than 48 hours. At last glance Batuello has raised just shy of $16,000 enough to aid in supplying three full scholarships.“It’s just awesome to see how they rally around our troops, our soldiers, and our country,” he said. Midway through the fifth round of the day, the aches and back pain began to creep in enough to take some more Advil, but the why behind the marathon more than enough to encourage him to keep going. “You gotta think about it you got soldiers, they’re going all day,” he said. “They can’t stop. It’s not like they have away if they’re going through the desert or they’re going through anything why should I stop because I’m in a little pain.”
