YEAR-END LETTER Dear Holston Hills Country Club Members, We hope this letter finds you well and looking forward to wonderful 2024! Our team is looking forward to another great year with you and your families. As always, please let us know if there is anything we can do to make your experience better and everything you are looking for from the Club. 2023 saw another great year for Holston Hills Country Club. As of the writing of this letter, we have 631 members, welcoming 92 new (or returning) members to the Club, with a net gain of 27 (for 2023). We always like to thank our Membership & Communication Director, Dara Jenkins, for her outstanding efforts in helping us continue to grow our membership. She also does a huge job of Communications for our club.
We, again, saw tremendous growth out on the golf course and around the Club. Rounds of golf were up again. Our Operation36 golf programs under Taylor Watts and Christian Melson saw record highs. Congratulations to Taylor Watts for being awarded one of the 2023 Top 50 Operation36 Coaches! We had over 75 total participants, through our Men’s, Women’s and Junior HHCC Golf Academy programs. They posted 727 total rounds with over 46,000 minutes of practice logged using the Operation36 platform. The Holston Hills CC events and activities were well-attended and fun for all ages, thanks to our Activities Director, Carrie Pittenger, and the Activities Team, as well as the Food & Beverage team. We have enjoyed tremendous growth in tennis this year, through the efforts of our Tennis Director, Jacob Fuqua. It’s great to see all the courts packed with tennis players of all ages and skill levels. Everything at the club is growing and we cannot thank you, the members, enough for all your on-going support. We also want to take a moment, as always, to thank all of our team members for all the hard work they provide for you on a daily basis. You, as members, are so great about making us all feel like family. That environment then resonates amongst the team, and they are dedicated to providing you with a positive experience each time you come out to enjoy the club.

MEMBERSHIP UPDATES What a year, 2023 shaped out to be for membership? Welcoming 93 new (or returning) members to the Holston Hills CC and McConnell Golf families. 59% of them came from member referrals, with a net gain of 27 (for 2023)! We finished the year strong; in November and December, we welcomed 9 new members to the Holston Hills CC and McConnell Golf families. Thank you again for all the member referrals, it’s truly amazing! And makes me smile to know how proud our members are of their club. We have come along way since I started here in May of 2018, as your Activities & Wellness Director. At the time, my family was going through a lot of transitions ~ moving here from Kentucky, building a new house, the boys starting new schools, us living in a two bedroom apartment for the first six months with over half of our stuff in storage. I can honestly remember telling Chris Dibble and the team, that I would give them at least two years. But that I would most likely go back to the Education field, where I had been for over 15 years. Well, I’m glad they took a chance on me. This past May, while the Korn Ferry Tour was here, I celebrated my 5th Anniversary with Holston Hills CC and McConnell Golf. I’m proud of our team (aka Team AWESOME)! We have grown a lot, pushing one another to be best we can be! However, this comes with realizing we can’t be everything for everybody. That’s a hard one for me, as I’m a people pleaser and maybe a little of a dreamer. As we look ahead to 2024, there will be a lot of changes going on throughout our HHCC Team and Club. Please know we are here to serve you and your family. We want you to participate in upcoming events and create memories that will bring a smile to your face when you talk about them in the future. In April of 2024, we are budgeted to take an Initiation Fee increase across all of our current membership types. This will help with upcoming capital projects. We are excited about the Bunker Project that is slated to start in June of 2024. It’s important that you are receiving our emails and updates. The HHCC Weekly Happenings email will continue to go out every Tuesday afternoon to the whole membership. Please let us know if you are not receiving any of our emails? If you have any questions, suggestions and/or issues making a reservation, please reach out to us!

FOOD & BEVERAGE DEPARTMENT LETTER FROM THE CHEF As we are ringing in a New Year, we have some new exciting changes going on in the Food & Beverage department. With Jim Disney stepping away / semiretiring from the day-to-day operations, my role with the club has changes. I have accepted a dual role of Food & Beverage Director and Executive Chef. I cannot say enough good things about my time working with Jim Disney. He has been an amazing mentor and friend for the last 7+ years. We all will miss having him around the club and restaurant on a daily basis. Cynthia Burrell and I will now be handling the booking of events, member parties and non-member parties. You can email me at Pbudniewski@holstonhills.com or Cynthia Burrell at Cburrell@holstonhills.com, with any questions about dates for parties, menus, or general Food & Beverage questions. We both will be glad to assist you. Another change we’re bringing to the club is expanding our Formal Dinner service nights. We are adding Wednesday evenings. This means that just like on Fridays, when our All-day Menu switches over for dinner, service we will be switching over to our Dinner Menu on Wednesdays as well. The starting time of Dinner Service will now begin at 5:30pm on Wednesdays and Fridays. We are also returning our monthly Birthday Night to be offered twice a month on selected Wednesdays. Those dates will be released and posted on the HHCC website calendar and in the HHCC Weekly Happenings emails. Please come out and celebrate your Birthday month with us, and receive a Free Entrée and Club Dessert. We have also been working on some other changes, and are proud to announce the Holston Hills CC Wine Society. We will be opening this exclusive club to members on a limited basis. Keep an eye open for more details and when the Wine Society will begin! This newsletters recipe of the month is for a piccata sauce. This sauce is versatile and can be used on pan-fried chicken, grilled chicken, pork chops, or even a nice white fish like Halibut. It is a white wine, lemon and caper sauce. You get a nice balance of bitterness with a little salty and tart. ~Patrick Budniewski, Executive Chef | Food & Beverage Director
PICCATA SAUCE INGREDIENTS: 4 TBSP Whole, unsalted Butter 1 TBSP Neutral Oil (Canola) 2 TBSP Garlic Clove (minced) ¼ Cup Small Dice Sweet Onion ¼ Cup White Wine (use a white wine that you enjoy drinking, like a nice unoaked Chardonnay) 2 Cups Chicken Broth 2 TBSP All Purpose Flour 1½ TBSP Lemon Juice 1 TSP Lemon Zest 3 TBSP Capers (with juice) 1 TBSP Parsley, fresh (chopped) ½ TBSP Kosher Salt 1 TSP Ground Black Pepper
METHOD OF PREPARATION: In a medium size sauce pan, heat the butter and oil over medium heat for 2-3 minutes until butter is melted. Add in onions and cook for 3 minutes, while stirring. Add garlic and cook for 3 more minutes. Add flour and stir to make roux. Add in white wine and lemon juice while stirring to make a paste. Whisk in white wine and reduce heat to low. Add lemon zest, capers and fresh parsley, cook for 4-5 minutes. Taste and season with Kosher Salt and black pepper Serve sauce right away or keep on warm for up to 1 hour.

TURF TALK 2023 YEAR END FROM OUR SUPERINTENDENT As 2023 has come and gone, it is hard for me to believe another year has passed. Each December, I look back over the goals we had set for the year and reflect on the past golfing season. This past year, we started out the golfing season hosting our third Visit Knoxville Open. Having the tournament so early in the growing season can be a challenge, and this year we were fortunate that the Tour moved our date two weeks later into May in the 2023 Tournament Schedule. Rico Hoey birdied the 18th hole on Sunday to become our third tournament champion, carding a four-day total of 14 under par on a much firmer and faster course than years prior. Rico finished 4th overall on the Korn Ferry Tour and is now playing on the PGA Tour. As we moved into the months of summer, we once again saw an increase in rounds played resulting in a much busier course than we have had in the past. I am very proud of the work my staff accomplished this year as we all embraced more changes to our normal daily schedule. With labor shortages being the new normal, we have continued to change the way we schedule and prepare the course daily. For example, in 2001, when I worked on my first labor budget we had 14 full-time staff members, today that number is all the way down to 6 full-time staff! As we continue to lose more and more full-time staff, we have had to change the way we staff our department and focus more on multiple part-time staff compared to full-time employees. By comparison, we now budget for 6 full-time crew along with 15 part-time staff. We are focused more on a higher number of parttime staff members that are here earlier to mow and prepare the course daily and then leave around noon as play really starts to increase. We were able to make progress on our turf goals this past year, as we continue to strive for improvement each year. We were again able to verticut the tees and aprons, increased our putting surface aerification, and started to incorporate a fertilizer and fungicide application plan on the fairways and tees. Overall, we had a great year and the one major takeaway I will remember from this past year is the change in operations of the staff. Next year looks to be another busy year with the Tournament quickly approaching ,and then right into our bunker project... I am excited for what looks to be an amazing year on the horizon.
2023 Season Goals Reviewed Continue to prepare for future bunker renovation project by keeping in touch with architects and possible contractors for future project. Happy to report we are scheduled for a complete bunker restoration project this upcoming summer! We will be working with Kris Spence on this exciting project where we are going to be updating all the bunkers with new drainage, sand, and more up to date bunker construction techniques. We set a goal to set aside a week for maintenance practices like verticutting, aerification, and selective topdressing on the tees and greens surrounds. Unfortunately, we were not able to add a specific week to the calendar for these tasks this past year with the ever-growing amounts of play. Hopefully in the future we can work into the calendar. We wanted to continue to build on the success of the Korn Ferry tournament, and work with PGA officials on small changes we could make to improve the course. This year’s Tournament was another big success. We were able to really improve the build out of the tournament this year with help from our new Tournament Director. The new tees added on the 3rd and 15th holes really had an impact on play along with playing the 9th hole from its full yardage for the first time. Staffing worked out great for tournament week with numerous McConnell Clubs sending volunteers. We set a goal to increase the amount of light and frequent topdressing we do over the course of the year. We have reduced some in past years with greatly increased play. Unfortunately, we were not able to increase the amount of topdressing this past year, but we were able to maintain the previous year’s total. We set a goal to improve our preventative applications for Poa and were looking into new strategies to prevent contamination. We were able to increase the number of Preventative apps we applied this year while also adding a new granular application applied around the putting surfaces this past Fall.

Jacob Fuqua USPTA I Director of Tennis Cell: 828.808.3122 I Tennis Shop: 865.523.4131 Email: jfuqua@holstonhills.com
Hello, Holston Hills CC Members! I wanted to start off with a big thank you to all of you for a fantastic 2023. This year has been our biggest year yet, with tons of tournaments and events. I also want to let you all know that we have had so many new faces out on the courts within the past few months, and it will only continue to grow thanks to you all. Some highlights from this past year would include all of our club championships. These tournaments have been so much fun for everyone including myself. To see both returning players, plus new players who are eager to get better has been amazing to watch. Another highlight that will also continue into 2024 is member trips. We had our first trip to Old North State, and a fantastic Ladies Weekend at Country Club of Asheville. Looking forward to 2024, I could not be more excited to get this new year started. With the influx of new players, I am able to create a better schedule of clinics along with structuring events to make everything more level based which is very exciting! The tennis event calendar for 2024 is almost complete, along with a new clinic schedule. These will be released soon! As always, Winter is here! Clinics will continue to run throughout the Winter months, weather permitting. I am also rolling out lesson packages to begin immediately.

THANK YOU HOLSTON HILLS CC BUCKY’S BIKES An 11-year Christmas tradition that happens on the first Sunday in December, Bucky’s Bikes of Knoxville, takes over the Holston Hills CC Ballroom. This year, we had incredible donations, totaling 403 bikes and over 100 helmets. All being donated to the Mission of Hope, in honor of Bucky Jones. Bucky Jones, a former HHCC employee, believed that every child should have a Christmas present. For years, he would donate a bike to Mission of Hope in your name for your gift from him each year. Family and friends wanted to keep up the tradition after Bucky passed away. They started back in 2013, with 23 bikes being donated. Each year the number has grown. Just last year, they broke into the 300's and had a goal for this year of 350. They blow past that goal and got to over 400 bikes. Since they started back in 2013, they have donated a total of 2,258 bikes.
HARPER FAMILY CHRISTMAS DRIVE The Harper Family Christmas drive for students has been going on for 10 years. They have teamed up with the social worker from Mooreland Heights Elementary to bring Christmas to children whose families are just above the cut-off line to receive help from local charities. These are working families who would struggle to make Christmas happen for their children without our help. This year, they added Sunnyview Primary and Chilhowee Intermediate School for what they thought was a total of 240 children this year. As donations started to come in, so did additional students. As of December 13th, with the help of family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, Facebook friends, church members, complete strangers, the Harper Family Christmas Drive were able to give Christmas to 300 children. And touch the lives of so many more! When the parent’s of these students came to the school on the 13th, they were seeing their children’s Christmas gifts for the first time with tears in there eyes. These are parents who are working hard, most working two jobs to just stay afloat, and to provide a life for their kids. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart! God is so good, and he loves giving us glimpses of what happens when we make the choice to serve. Maybe not on this side of Heaven will we ever see those children’s excitement and surprise, but one day God will show us every life we have touched.” Sincerely, Nykky Harper & family
