TURF TALK
Dear Members,
As I sit and write this update the first frost of the year is in the forecast for tomorr morning. It is hard to believe the season is coming to a close and another year h gone by. The project this summer took longer than I thought it originally wou but I am excited with the finished product. As we worked our way through t summer months, our focus was not only on our normal day to day task, but mai on getting all the bunker construction completed before the first frost of t season. As the contractors pack up and we are finally done with construction I lo forward to getting back to a more normal daily operations schedule.
I am very happy with the finished bunkers in both functionality and in regard architectural intent. From a functionality standpoint there are absolutely comparisons between the old bunkers and the new ones. Kris Spence and his
team did an amazing job working to make sure surface water was diverted around the bunkers while at the same time remaining true to their original design The addition of the Capillary Flow to the bunker floors has also created a bunker that has a tremendous drainage potential During construction it was amazing to watch as we would flood the bunkers while watering the sod and we still could not make them hold water The construction method was put to the test at the end of September when we received close to 6 inches of rain with no washout or standing water of any kind We were able to go out and hand rake the bunkers the following day
From an architectural standpoint, minimal changes were made to the course. I am a big history enthusiast and can assure you I have spent many hours researching the history of the Club and the course I really wanted us to stay as true to our past as possible but I also realize change is part of life. There have been a lot of changes in the game of golf over the past ninety years and not too many changes to our course. Is it exactly the way Ross built the course or would he make changes today if he was still alive? These are all questions everyone has their own opinions about, but I am confident we have done everything in our power to preserve and promote Donald Ross and his architecture I also know this would not have been possible without Kris Spence, Jim Harbin, and their team so for that I am th
Now that the bunker project is completed we can finally start to work at maintaining and preparing the bunkers on a daily basis In a staff meeting with my team the other morning, I made the comment that bunkers are now almost more important than the putting surfaces themselves I never thought I would say that, but that is just how the game has changed This winter the grass on the bunker faces was left intentionally taller to provide insulation for the new sod over the winter months
Next spring we will be returning the faces to a shorter height of cut so balls do not remain lodged up in the grass We will also be mowing down some of the sod we installed around the bunkers where we had to repair some rather large areas For example, the sod in the fairway around the 1st fairway bunker at the start of the 12th hole, or the sod in the front of the 18th green complex We will also be packing the sand again with a plate compactor to help firm up the bunkers The construction crew packed each bunker as they were built, but as the sand settles we will pack them again to promote a firm surface as possible
Lastly we will be working on the sand edge right up against the bunker face to promote a ball rolling away from the face
Thank you to everyone for enduring the months of construction It was a long summer for sure but it will all be worth it now that we can maintain our new bunkers at a much higher level and will not be tasked with constant repairs from rainstorms
~ Ryan Blair, CGCS I CourseSuperintendent
