Join us on Cinco de Mayo for some Round Robin Tennis followed by a social hour complete with margaritas, non-alcoholic Cincoinspiredbeverages, andchips&salsa!

We are excited to announce what we have in store for the tennis program here at The Country Club of Asheville over the next couple of months! First we’d like to announce that our outdoor clay tennis courts are officially open for play. The entire team here at CCA has worked hard to open them even earlier this season, so everyone can enjoy them for as long as possible this year. Next time you visit the outdoor tennis court area you’ll notice an improved viewing experience, and significantly less debris on the courts as we have cut down/ trimmed many of the problem trees around the tennis facility to improve your tennis experience and, most importantly, your safety.

We are also very excited to announce that we will now be carrying lululemon apparel at the tennis pro shop This will make the Country Club of Asheville one of only two places in Asheville that you can find lululemon merchandise Keep an eye out for the announcement of the launch party we will be hosting in the coming weeks. Alongside the new lululemon apparel entering the shop, we will be having a clearance sale of our current inventory that includes items that are great for both on and off the court

Some events we have coming up that we would love to see you at include our Cinco De Mayo Round Robin May 5th where you can expect themed music, drinks, and snacks to go along with a fun social tennis outing and opportunity to make some new friends, our Try Tennis clinic May 26th is for anyone that is interested in learning about our amazing sport and seeing if it could be for them Our Memorial Day Round Robin 27th will kick off the pseudo summer season, and you can expect food, drinks and celebration of the holiday as we recognize those that served our great country. Our annual USTA Junior Tennis Tournament is June 15-16th and we encourage you to come out to watch some of the best North Carolina has to offer and a few of our very own juniors compete Finally we will commence true summer with our 1st of 4 Sports Camps of the year from June 24th-28th if you have a child that’s 612 years old and is looking for a week of fun in the sun, check with Danielle if there are any slots remaining.

As we progress into through spring and into summer things will get even busier here at CCA To meet the demands of our growing membership we will be adding to our staff with both permanent and seasonal workers that will help us continue to grow our program into the vibrant tennis community we envision for the near future. Keep an eye out for the new faces and much more to come from Tennis at Country Club of Asheville.

Sincerely,

THE HICKORY STICK PAGE 10
COURTSIDE NEWS

ToStretchorNottoStretch,Thatisthequestion?

In today's world, we are gleaning information from multiple sources and trying to do our best. So when we see a research paper stating that stretching affects athletic performance, we jump to it, and do not stretch Then we see post after post talking about how we need to stretchourhipflexorstoalleviatethebackpain.Whichisit?

Like most answers in life, it depends. It depends on what the goal is: are you warming up for a round of golf, cooling down from a run or hardgymsession, orareyoujustgettingmovingfortheday?Stretchingcanbebrokenupintothreecategories:static, dynamic, andprecontraction stretching I know, you're thinking, "We have 3 categories of stretching?" but they're really not that different from what you probablyknoworhavedoneinthepast.

Static stretching is the most common type of stretching. This is where we lengthen a muscle and hold it for a period of time, 10 seconds to a minute or more Dynamic stretching can be thought of as a quick stretch or moving stretching; think of leg swings or kicks Precontraction stretching consists of activation of the agonist muscle or the antagonist with a subsequent stretch after a short contraction period

So what is the right way to stretch or not to stretch? When you get down to the nitty gritty of the research, we go back to “it depends” Different individuals will require different protocols for their bodies. As a general rule, I like to prescribe a short warm-up period, walk or bike, then a dynamic stretching session with a few static stretches thrown in. I tend to leave most static stretches and pre-contraction stretchesfortheendofworkoutsorformorningmovementroutines

Thereasonforawarm-upispurelyduetoresearchshowinga15%decreaseinmuscleactivationwithstaticstretchingpriortoanathletic event. With a warm-up this decrease is eliminated and even shown to improve the athletic performance of the muscle. This means that you should arrive for your round a little early next time and get some warming up done in the wellness center It does not mean do your stretchesonthesecondhole,withthefirstholebeingyourwarm-up.Hitthemwelloutthere.

Directions:

1

Rinse lemons, dry, and roll firmly against the counter to help release juices Zest lemons, being careful not to get into the pith. Reserve zest in a small bowl. Juice lemons and reserve juice in a second small bowl.

Preheat oven to 350F and line 2-3 large baking sheets with parchment paper.

3

2. Cream butter with sugar for 1 minute until just combined, but don't beat too much air into the mixture

4

5.

Add egg and 2 teaspoons of the lemon juice and mix until combined

In a clean bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, salt, and lemon zest. Add dry ingredients to butter mixture in 4-5 additions, mixing until a few flour streaks remain.

6

7

If dough appears chalky or dry, mix in 1 teaspoon of milk You want the dough to be moist but easy to work with - not too sticky

Turn dough out onto a floured work surface and roll out to 1/4-inch thickness Use a 2-inch round cookie cutter to cut cookies Place onto prepared baking sheet spaced 2 inches apart. Gather up remaining dough scraps, roll out again (flour surface again if needed) and cut out more cookies.

Bake on center rack 9-11 minutes or until cookies are just set. Don't wait for them to get too brown, or they will taste dry Let cool on pan 5 minutes, then transfer to cooling rack Repeat with remaining baking sheets Let cookies cool completely 8. Lemon Glaze Directions:

Stir together powdered sugar and lemon juice until fully combined Pull a fork or knife through the glaze. The line you make should hold its shape for about 5 seconds. If it's too thin, add a little more powdered sugar. If it's too thick, add a little more lemon juice. Make additions in very, very small amounts, mixing well between each one, to test consistency

MARCHEMPLOYEEOFTHEMONTH BRANDONAVALOS(F&B)

Throughout the month, Brandon has shown what a great asset he is to the culinary team. He worked multiple stations, such as garde manger to help out the team, and he stayed late to get everything ready for Easter He came in early to help with prep work and worked on his day off filling in for another staff member on short notice He can always be counted on to be a team player.

APRIL EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH KYLE WHITE (CART ATTENDANT)
