CLUB UPDATE A NOTE FROM YOUR TRIAD REGIONAL DIRECTOR Even though spring technically begins March 20, I am doling out my spring wishes early, with the blessing of our local weather men. It seems every year - and every season for that matter - I hear a term from our meteorologists that I've never heard before, the most recent being climatological or meteorological spring, which runs from March 1 through May 31. Although the true astronomical spring (another term I had never heard) begins March 20, it's never too early to start celebrating this wonderful season that kicks off the golf year at our clubs. By the way, when I bestowed my spring well-wishes on the staff at Sedgefield, they were unamused, so I am hopeful that the members and staff at Old North State Club will be more intrigued by my new-found terms! Happy Spring!!
COOKIES OF THE MONTH MARCH: OLD FASHION OATMEAL COOKIES By Rhett Sorg - Executive Chef at The Reserve
The search for a new Club Manager is underway and I hope to have someone in place in the near future. In the interim, I would like to extend a huge thanks to the entire management team at Old North State Club for going above and beyond to handle their departments and more. You have a great group of leaders in place and I know they appreciate your support. Speaking of the management team, it is a pleasure to welcome Chris Callicutt back to Old North State Club after a 3+ year hiatus which he spent teaching and coaching kids ages 5 to 18. Chris is a graduate of Pfeiffer University with a degree in Sports Management and Athletic Coaching. He is currently in the final stages of obtaining his MAT in Health and Physical Education from UNC-Wilmington. Chris previously worked at ONSC at the tennis facility as well as outside golf operations. He was the Tennis Operations Manager in 2015-16 and then moved up to Tennis & Activities Director. We are excited to welcome Chris back to the Old North State Club team as our Activities and Communications Director to oversee tennis, fitness, and aquatics facilities and programming and eventually the newsletter and other various communications. Chris is happily married to wife Salita and they have two beautiful children; Johnathan (5) and Carli (1). Please join me with a big welcome for Chris Callicutt.

FROM THE KITCHEN A NOTE FROM YOUR EXECUTIVE CHEF Hello Everyone,
MARCH EVENTS 4 THRUSDAY
Spring is around the corner and that means it’s almost Blueberry Cornbread season. Man do I love this time of year! The weather changing, days getting longer, local farms starting to harvest spring crops, the ol’ pig smoker heating up, bees making honey, and Terrace Dining will once again be the best seat at the Clubhouse with the Badin Lake sunset. You may even catch me with my fishing pole on 18th green. I hope you all have enjoyed the food that the Culinary Team has been preparing for you and that you are continuing to enjoy our Winter Menu and Weekly Specials. We are planning to change to our Spring Menu in May, so be on the lookout! We are looking forward to visiting the local farms around the area as we enter one of my favorite seasons to cook in. With berries, spring greens, peaches, asparagus, radishes, peppers, and TOMATOES (I love a good tomato sandwich) ready for the picking I just can’t help myself. Also, it’s time to put some smoke in the air and some good eating on the table. The pig smoker should be back soon from the BBQ Hospital and ready to burn. We are also looking forward to taking advantage of the products this great state has to offer. We started with Cured Meats, Cheeses, and Beef from the Asheville area and Grits from outside Charlotte. We’re looking to add Carolina Gold Rice, Shrimp, Cheeses, Mustard, Poultry, Pork, and Cream Top Buttermilk. The Culinary Team is in the planning stages of some fun and tasty culinary outdoor events for members to enjoy. We are getting the burners, grills, and smoker ready to turn up the heat here at the lake. I can’t wait for the first Shrimp Boil on the Terrace and maybe a Beer Dinner on the Lawn. These events will give us a way to show off our talents in the most creative and delicious way. We are also looking forward to being able to utilize some new ingredients and culinary techniques that are trending.

A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF EVENTS Hello everyone! I don’t know about you but I am excited to say hello to spring, and goodbye to winter. Three weekends in a row of snow, sleet, and freezing rain were enough for me. Golf season will be in full swing at the end of March and we kick off a very busy event season starting in the middle of April. Food and Beverage and the Culinary team are working together to come up with some great ideas to enhance this year’s activities. For all our member events and activities, please be sure to keep an eye out for our weekly emails and follow us on social media.
Sincerely, Tara Wright

TEE IT UP A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF Greetings Old North State Members, I hope this finds everyone well and that you are ready to start playing more golf. By the time you read this, we will be preparing to kick off multiple season-opening day events along with multiple fitting days. The technology in the golf business is ever-changing, and I pride myself and my team on knowing the trends associated with this. For example, TaylorMade Golf has a carbon face insert, which has been highly touted as faster and more stable than traditional titanium inserts. Please make sure to mark your calendars for our upcoming events. For 2022 we are going to start a Men’s Interclub Team. This team will play in a pod with Highland Creek Golf Club, Providence Country Club, and Cowans Ford Country Club. If you are interested in competing please reach out to the golf shop. If you need to brush up on some fundamentals of the golf swing please make sure to reach out to the golf shop. We are always happy to assist in improving your game. Have a great golf season,
A NOTE FROM YOUR COURSE SUPERINTENDENT THREE PUTT! I can only think of one other two-word phrase that may send more chills through the spine of a golfer and that’s GREENS AERIFICATION! Unfortunately, it’s a crucial piece of the puzzle for promoting turf health. It’s been six months since our last greens aerification and we need to maximize root development this spring. Our first aerification and deep air injection this year will be March 7-9 and the second one will be May 3-4. According to the USGA, our sand-based greens should contain 45-65% solids, 20-30% macropores, and 15-25% micropores. Aerification followed by sand topdressing is still the best tool for maintaining these ratios. The macropore space promotes the movement of water, nutrients, air and therefore roots down through the profile. Most of the water and nutrients moving through the macropores isn’t plant available, it’s moving too quickly. It’s up to the micropores to capture, hold and supply the water/nutrient mix to the roots as they travel through the macropore space that is created by aerification. Something to think about next time you walk onto an aerified green. I’m sure we will have some great weather in the coming months for you to get out and enjoy the course. See you on the course! FITNESS, MARINA, & NEWS FROM THE NET A NOTE FROM YOUR DOCKMASTER Spring is just around the corner, we’ve almost made it! And with it comes all the joys of a new boating season. Did your boat or trailer registration expire? Is all of your safety equipment in good working order? Flares, Fire Extinguisher, Personal Floatation Devices, Horn? How’s your battery, is it dead? Now is an excellent time to think about these things so we can have your boat ready to go when you’re ready to. Not sure of the condition? No problem just give us a call and we will do a preseason inspection to get you up to speed. Don’t have a boat and want to enjoy this beautiful spring? Just give us a call and make some memories on one of our wonderful rental boats. With spring comes the notorious greenish-yellow pollen that sticks to everything, I can guarantee it will get on your vessels. But have no fear, we will clean and detail your vessel upon appointment and have it back to looking ship shape! Friendly reminder it’s getting that time to renew all marina contracts so get those into us as soon as possible! The contract date is April 1. So stop by and get that taken care of or email me at dhinson@oldnorthstateclub.com As of April 1 we will be back open on Wednesdays-Sundays from 9:00am-5:00pm. As always, I hope you all have a swell day!
