FROM THE CLUB FROM DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS

We hope you had a wonderful summer with your friends and family. It was quite busy around the club, to say the least, and was certainly a pleasure to see members continue to socialize together. However, considering the new concern of the delta variant, and the updated guidance from the CDC, we will be taking the following measures to keep both our members and employees safe at Members Club (Ocean Club). Thank you for your patience and kindness as we continue to work through these uncertain times. · Effective immediately, all employees (regardless of vaccination status) are required to wear masks indoors at all facilities, and employees are strongly encouraged to get vaccinated. · At this time, we strongly encourage, but will not, require guests, members, or visitors to wear masks. The above guidelines may change as the pandemic and advice from the relevant authorities evolves. We greatly appreciate how our teams have managed through the pandemic over the past 16+ months, especially focusing on safety as a top priority. I’m excited to announce that we have an accepted offer for a new Food and Beverage Director at the Members Club. We are still finalizing the details, but we anticipate him beginning in the next two weeks. I plan to share more information in the coming days about our new F&B Director. I will also be focused on transitioning our culinary staff at The Members Club and Ocean Club.Unfortunately we are having to say farewell to our Executive Chef, Michael Marques. Chef Mike had returned to the Grande Dunes Members Club last September after spending a couple of years managing all of the food outlets for Coastal Carolina University. Prior to Coastal Carolina, Mike spent six years with McConnell Golf as the Corporate Chef and Executive Chef at Grande Dunes. Recently Chef Mike received an excellent opportunity to become the Sheraton Resort’s Culinary Director. We thank both Chef Mike for his many contributions to Grande Dunes and wish them nothing but the best in his future endeavors. Ocean Club Chef, Jackie “Tanaka” McMillan will resume as our Executive Chef, in the interim, as we begin our search for a new Executive Chef. We also say farewell to Virginia Hitchcock who has been our Anchor Café Manager for the past 6 years. In addition to managing the Anchor, Virginia has worked behind the scenes with all of the F & B outlets.Virginia has decided to move to Raleigh, NC to pursue a new career and be closer to family. Current Assistant Manager, Cory Thomas, will be promoted to the Manager’s position at the Anchor Café. Please join me in thanking both Mike and Virginia for their many years of service to Grande Dunes.I look forward to working closely with our new Food and Beverage Director, as well as the rest of the team, as we transition the club into the future. Brian Vest, Director of Operations I Brian.Vest@GrandeDunes.com

TEE IT UP Golf Report

July and August have had their fair share of extreme weather days. We have seen drenching rain and scorching heat. All things considering, the golf course has never been in better shape. The end of August marks one year with our new greens and the feedback has been great. We held two major championships in the last two months, The Tradition in July and our annual Club Championship in August. The Gross Champions were a father-son duo of Anthony T. and Anthony M. Fauci combined to shoot minus eleven in the two-day eclectic. Husband and wife combo of Ed and Sue Renicker scored a two-day eclectic score of 58! It was an exciting two days of golf for both champions. Our Club Championship had an exciting start and finish. Defending Gross Club Champion, Bob Ramsey played an exceptional two days of golf and ultimately came up short trying to three-peat. He did however find himself in a playoff for the Net Title. He would end up prevailing on the sudden death playoff beat Philip Palmeri on the 18th hole. The Gross Title was a two-horse race from start to finish. Billy Belair and Mark Wright battled each other over 36-holes only to find themselves in the same position as they started, tied. Both competitors score three under par over two days and also found themselves playing extra golf to determine the winner. With a par on the 37th hole of competition, Mark Wright claimed the title of Club Champion. Adding to his stellar play this Summer, Anthony Fauci raised the hardware to claim his first Men’s Senior Championship. He shot a two-day total of 148 (six over par) to beat Edwin Boyd by four strokes. In the Ladies Division, Ann Edwards and Katie Brownschidle engaged in a 36-hole battle for Gross Champion. With scores of 81 and 80, Edwards’ consistent play claimed herself a two-stroke victory over Brownschidle. Not all was lost for Brownschidle, with net scores of 76 and 77, she beat out Britni Gaddy by two strokes to win the Net Club Champion Title.

FROM THE GREEN It is no secret that the club is busier than ever. Membership and rounds are up which is great for the club, but does present challenges for the golf course maintenance department. It means that we’ve got to get as much as possible completed ahead of play if we want to be productive and successful. Unfortunately it is not possible to get everything accomplished in front of play, every day. Productive Monday’s are vital to our success for the week, really gives our department the head start we need on certain tasks such as mowing rough. It takes 3 full days to mow rough and when it’s hot we mow rough all day every day, Monday through Friday.

I thought it was important to write this article at this point because I do realize that our department is encountering more play while working on the course than ever before. We are having to work around and between groups and I’m sure it can seem at times as if we don’t care about your round, but that is absolutely not the case. In fact we care enough to continue to find whatever gaps present themselves to work in. We try to work in a manner that hopefully only affects your round once if possible but that is certainly not always possible. It takes approximately 5 ½ hours to mow fairways, if we begin first thing, but we like to keep them free and clear of clippings if at all possible. It takes considerably longer to blow fairways and it’s far louder and more invasive. The tractor blower is a necessary evil if we want clean conditions. We attempt to blow where play is not, but it isn’t always that easy or possible, especially during steady play, we are forced to be opportunistic in and around play. Early play or Diamond Lane play has also had its challenges for our department, as well as for early golfers. Diamond Lane play is typically utilized primarily by singles and twosomes, obviously playing the course much faster. Extremely fast pace of play can cause our staff to rush in order to stay in front of play, which can at times lead to mistakes. I realize that on the surface it does not seem like one or two extremely quick players would have a significant impact on our morning setup but believe me it can, it typically has a domino effect on our entire operation. On a normal morning we mow greens, then roll greens and ultimately change hole locations, this process normally takes approximately 4 hours to complete. We are also required to make applications to the greens for health and fertility at least once a week and occasionally the conditions require multiple applications a week. Having said all of that our goal is to work around play, however it is not always possible to allow play through our morning setup as it has a negative impact on the setup for the entire day. So we would ask that you please keep that in mind as you’re playing at an unbelievably fast pace, one that we would never be able to keep in front of. Even if we started in complete darkness every morning. Please remember that we’re setting the course up for everyone and some days take longer than others. I truly hope that everyone is enjoying the course, our staff has been working extremely hard to keep it in as good of shape as possible, but it’s always a work in progress. As always please contact me with any questions or concerns or feel free to stop me on the course. I’ve been spending an awful lot of time on the tractor blower as of late so that’ll be a good place to find me. Sincerely, Ryan Gamble Golf Course Superintendent, Grande Dunes Members Club ryan.gamble@grandedunes.com 843-903-3484

MCCONNELL GOLF NEWS His top 30 effort earned him a check for $41,013 and a spot in the Korn Ferry Tour Finals, the three-event series that determines PGA Tour eligibility for the 2021-22 season. Smalley has made the cut in all five of his PGA Tour starts and earned enough FedExCup points to finish inside the top-200 and qualify for the Korn Ferry playoffs. Smalley joined Sedgefield in June of 2020 and estimates he has played 75 rounds or more on the classic Donald Ross design. “I feel pretty comfortable with the lines on each hole,” he said during the week. “The course is always in really good shape. It’s playing a little different than it usually does for us. There’s a little more runout in the fairways, which has changed a couple of the clubs that I hit off of the tee. The greens are a little quicker, but other than that, it’s the same golf course.” Photo Courtesy: John Gillooly/Wyndham Championship

KEVIN KISNER WINS WILD 6-MAN PLAYOFF AT THE WYNDHAM CHAMPIONSHIP Kevin Kisner birdied the second extra hole to end a six-man playoff and capture a thrilling 2021 Wyndham Championship at Greensboro’s Sedgefield Country Club. Known as a dogged match-play competitor, Kisner stiffed his approach shot on 18 and calmly rolled in a 3-foot putt. For the victory — the fourth of his career and first since 2019 — the former University of Georgia Bulldog banked $1,152,000.

Smalley enjoyed plenty of local support during the week. Along with his father and his mother, Maria — both of whom have caddied for Smalley throughout his career — his sister, Katie, and numerous friends and playing partners from Sedgefield followed his group and rooted him on. “It was nice to hear their cheers out there,” Smalley said. “I don’t get to play in front of a whole lot of people very often. It’s pretty cool to have people scream at you after you make a putt. To have an opportunity to play a PGA Tour event on your home course is pretty special. I think it helped me out quite a bit. I know my way around. I’ve played out here numerous times, so I felt comfortable on the course. To have that finish was pretty cool.”

Adam Scott shot 65 in the final round to make the playoff. He had a chance for victory on the first playoff hole, but his 4-foot birdie putt never threatened the cup. Kisner and Scott were joined in the playoff by former champion Si Woo Kim, Braden Grace, Kevin Na and Roger Sloan. It marked just the third time in PGA Tour history that six golfers have gone to a playoff. Kisner began Sunday’s final round four shots behind leader Russell Henley, but he birdied Nos. 16 and 17, eventually shooting 66 to reach 15 under and the playoff. “My first playoff win,” said Kisner, who was previously 0-5 in playoffs prior to his Wyndham title. “To be standing here is pretty sweet.” Henley held the lead after the first three rounds. He recovered from a slow start on Sunday to reach 17-under after a birdie on the 10th hole, but the Georgia Bulldog bogeyed three of the next four holes and came to the 72nd hole needing par to stay at 15 under. He fell short of the playoff after narrowly missing a 5-foot par putt. It proved a brutal ending to what had been an otherwise amazing performance from Henley. McConnell Golf member Alex Smalley didn’t quite play his way into the six-man playoff, but the former Duke University star gained plenty more along the way. Playing on his home course, Sedgefield CC, the 24-yearold Smalley carded three rounds in the 60s, including a sizzling 64 on Friday. He responded to the heat of Sunday’s final-round pressure in equally torrid fashion, finishing his day with three straight birdies and a 4under 66. In just his fifth PGA Tour event, playing on a sponsor’s exemption in a fullfield event on the last weekend of the PGA Tour regular season, Smalley finished at 10-under par and tied for 29th.
