CLUB NEWS I hope this finds everyone well and rested from the holidays. We are excited to begin this New Year as we have a lot of new events, programs and camps to roll out. We cannot thank you enough for your support of the club and our staff. Your generosity with the Holiday Fund is so very much appreciated by every member of the staff. Our Wakefield Plantation Family has grown over the past few months as Matt McConnell and his wife Karah welcomed baby daughter Jacquelyn into this world on November 5th. Nine days later on November 14th, Kasey Olive married Stewart Outen. On December 15th, Erica Britt and her husband Jake welcomed son Louie into this world. We are excited to welcome Jacquelyn, Stewart and Louie into our Wakefield Plantation Family. We are very fortunate to have a veteran staff with lots of experience. Please do not hesitate to reach out should we be of any assistance to you and your guests. We are anticipating Covid-19 being an issue for at least the first half of the year. You can be certain that we will be putting on fun events while continuing to host them in a safe manner.

MEMBERSHIP Dear Members, 2020 may not have been the best year for many but it was a great year for Wakefield Plantation junior golfer Liam King. On January 1st, Liam started 2020 with a hole-in-one on #8 at Camelback Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. From 113 yards out, the then 8 year old struck the ball with his 3 wood for his first hole-in-one. But one wasn't enough. While playing in the Wakefield Plantation Junior Club Championship on Sunday, October 18th, Liam hit his 2nd hole-in-one on #11 with his 4 hybrid from 127 yards out. In addition to his 2 hole-in-one this year, Liam also qualified for and played in the U.S. Kids World Championship in Pinehurst this past summer. The now 9 year old had a great golf year and we look forward to many more ahead from Liam at Wakefield Plantation. Please help me welcome our new members! WHY CAN'T WE PLAY ON FROZEN GREENS?
When a green freezes, the plant and underlying soil becomes one hard unit. As the sun warms the green, it begins to thaw from the surface. This is a very critical time because the upper portion containing plants and roots has thawed and the lower portion containing the root mass is still frozen. At this time, any movement on the green (golf play) serves the roots from the plant. The damage that occurs leaves the plant with a short root system that will take several months to grow back. In the winter, when the soil temperatures are below 50 degrees, the roots grow very little. Therefore, any repair to the damaged roots will not begin until spring. Instead of adding onto the root depth established in the fall these areas will be starting over. They will be limited in root mass and more susceptible to the stresses of summer. For this reason we do not allow any play until the greens are completely thawed. Depending on the depth to which the greens are frozen they will need several hours to several days of sun and warm temperatures to completely thaw. By allowing the thawing process to take place we eliminate the damage that would occur. The stronger the root system gives the plant a greater opportunity to survive the stresses of heat and disease in the spring and summer that means healthier greens. Todd Lawrence, Director of Maintenance Operations

January Cookie of the Month: Cocoa-Molasses Drop Cookies I Bruce McIntosh - Country Club of Asheville From 1985-2015, H. Robert Sharbaugh was a member of the Country Club of Asheville and had served time as a member of the board for a number of years. He was very well-known and admired by club members and staff alike. He meant a great deal to me, especially during my earlier years at the club. One memory of him that stands out to me in particular was the year that, this self-proclaimed chocoholic, gifted me a very old, yet pristine Hershey's cookbook from 1934 that had been revised and reprinted in 1971. I think of him fondly every time I open the binding to see his name on the inside cover. Thank you for your service to our country and the many laughs throughout the years. This one is for you Mr. Sharbaugh!

The holidays sure did fly by this year, and we so appreciate all the amazing support from our members with the 2020's new and improved Halloween event for the family, our Take-Out Thanksgiving Meal, and our safe and socially distant Christmas and NYE Events. I am looking forward to what's to come for the year 2021, and I feel so blessed to be part of the McConnell Golf and Wakefield Plantation family. February Cookie of the Month: Chocolate Dipped Coconut Macaroon Cookies I John Crawford ~ Providence Country Club This has been one of my favorite cookie recipes for as long as I can remember. As a kid my grandmother would make these for us when we would come home and visit. While all of the others would devour the chocolate chip cookies, I had these all to myself. If you like coconut and chocolate, this recipe is for you! With the toasted outside, creamy inside and smooth chocolate to tie it all together, it cannot get much better!
Ingredients: 16oz. Sweetened Flaked Coconut 1 Cup Sweetened Condensed Milk 1 TSP Vanilla Extract Pinch of Salt 6oz. Semisweet Chocolate Chips 2 Large Egg Whites Directions: Start by mixing the coconut, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla and salt thoroughly in a mixing bowl. Next, separate the egg whites from the yolk and beat the egg whites until they form a stiff peak. Gently fold the egg whites into the coconut mixture. Using a small scoop, scoop the mixture onto a parchment lined sheet pan spacing each about two inches apart. Place the macaroons in a 325 degree F preheated oven for 25 minutes, rotating as needed to prevent from burning. While Macaroons are baking in the oven, melt the chocolate in a double boiler or a microwave, stirring frequently. When cookies have cooled completely, dip the bottoms in the melted chocolate and place them on a clean sheet of parchment paper. Enjoy! TENNIS TIME A new year, a blank slate and thoughts of normalcy is what many of us are hoping for as we move into 2021. It is still too early to tell if life will get completely back to normal but our hopes are high and our staff is prepared to offer a full array of tennis and pickleball events for our members. From juniors to adults there is an opportunity for everyone in the family to get involved and have fun around the tennis center. While January might be a little slow, don't let that fool you because when February comes around it will be pedal to the metal. We will start the year off with our "Couples Therapy" Mixed Doubles pickleball social. You can expect a full afternoon of pickleball fun, food and plenty of laughter. Also coming in February Wakefield will once again play host to many of the top junior players around the state as the USTA tournament season begins. These tournaments are a great opportunity to show off our club and allow our junior members to compete in a high level tournament right in their backyard. To close out this month we will invite all our player's juniors and adults to attend the bring on the spring family social hosted by the Wakefield tennis Staff.
There are many questions surrounding the USTA leagues and if we will finally be able to get back to local competition with other facilities. We do not have all the answers to that yet, but we are preparing for a full spring league schedule. If the USTA gives the green light to participate in league play, we will do our part to make sure our members both adults and juniors have the opportunity to participate. While we are planning for a full event and league calendar in 2021, please know that our number one goal is to keep our members and staff safe during these unprecedented times. The tennis courts have provided some normalcy for our members over the past year and our staff would like to thank you for your support of our program. We hope to see back on the courts soon!

We have put together the golf schedule so make sure to mark your calendar for the various tournaments and events that we have scheduled this year. As we move into the winter months hopefully we will have our share of mild days so that we can keep our
games sharp for the upcoming season. In January and February, we will continue to have double tee starts on #1 and #10 from 9:30am to 11:30am on the weekends. This has allowed us to maximize the number of players. Please be mindful that we may have frost delays and that we may start play off #10 to get play on the course earlier during the winter months. Please contact the golf shop if you have any questions on start times or conditions. Over the past year, we have implemented the Operation 36 Program to grow the game of golf at Wakefield Plantation. This program has been a huge success and we will continue to grow these programs in the future. Erica Britt has been a major factor in the success of the program. Erica was recently recognized as an Operation 36 Top 50 Golf Coach. Congratulations to Erica on her deserving reward and a job well done! As we start a new golf year, I would like to thank the entire membership for your support over the past year and willingness to make adjustments with some of the challenges that we faced. I appreciate the tremendous patronage that our members have shown to the golf operation at Wakefield Plantation. As always my door is open with any questions or concerns. FROM THE LESSON TEE
Winter Golf is unfortunately something we have to succumb to annually, January and February are not typically ideal and we often find ourselves lacking motivation to play golf and improve our game. Taking advantage of the few nice days we get during the winter will only subside the urge temporarily. Don't let the winter discourage you from improving your game for the season, there are many drills you can work on to keep from plateauing. Work on tempo - Address a ball with a 5-iron. Place another club immediately behind the clubhead so the shaft on teh ground is pointing down the target line. As your start your backswing, push the club on the ground straight back away from the target. You'll need to turn your body and swing your arms in unison to have enough strength to move the club back smoothly. This slow, controlled tempo is the pace you want for all your clubs. If you can take the club back smoothly for the first few feet, you'll notice it helps you to complete your backswing before starting down. Putt/Swing in front of a mirror - Standing in front of a mirror will work wonders for you this winter. A mirror will help you improve posture, alignment, ball position and swing path which are all imperative on the number one concern for golfers: Distance and Direction. With putting a mirror will help refine the path your stroke and alignment. You can work on putting almost anywhere and if you want to shave strokes off your handicap dedicate this winter to improving your putting. Invest in Fitness - Exercising can be a key component into a drastic improvement in your golf game. Exercising will boost speed, power, flexibility, and stamina to perform at an optimum level on the golf course. Our very own Andrew Hodges is certified by the Titliest Performance Institute. AT THE TURN
Several years ago, at one of our annual corporate meetings, an idea was brought to the table that we needed a Lagniappe of our own that would show our appreciation to members and their guests for dining with us. This idea quickly grew to a collaboration of our executive chefs, their staff members and other club staff submitting cookie recipes to be used in our monthly rotation. These cookies would be a bite size sweet treat for everyone who had lunch at one of our properties in the dining room. As McConnell Golf has grown we have been able to feature a club each month, in addition to recipes from our CEO John McConnell and COO Christian Anastasiadis, the Easter bunny and Santa Claus. Beyond baking and serving these delicious treats in our clubs each month, we also share the recipe in our newsletter and online blog that includes a special story or meaning behind them. Our culinary teams have embraced this idea and continue to showcase their talents with these delectable sweet treats, from our kitchens to yours.
