CLUB NEWS Cheers to 2021! We cannot thank you enough for your support of the club. Member referrals were at an all-time high. Member events were mostly back to normal as we took full use of outdoor spaces in many cases. The Breaker Bar & Grill at the pool was a huge hit and continued to get a lot of use after the pool closed. Your support of this year's Holiday Fund was amazing and so very much appreciated. It was a great way to say thank you to the staff for all their efforts over the past year. Your continued support of this fund goes along way and touches every member of the staff. A great way to end 2021! We are so excited for 2022 as the golf course renovations continue to move forward. The goal is to have all 18 holes open by the end of March. The project will include redoing the bunkers while at the same time eliminating some of those that are not in play. Additionally, we will be repairing some of the cart paths, adding a few tees and addressing a few other issues on the golf course. Should you have any questions, and want to learn more, please do not hesitate to reach out. Just about the time we are finishing the golf course renovations, we should be underway with the construction of our four pickleball courts. We would love to start as soon as possible, however in order for courts to cure properly, we need to have several weeks with temperatures above freezing. Although it will take a little bit longer than expected, it will be worth the wait. The excitement level with this sport among our members is amazing. More details to follow. Your continued support of the club is very much appreciated. As always, my door is always open. Michael Thomas, Club Manager
GOLF COURSE RENOVATION PHOTOS These pictures show the evolution of a brand new bunker on hole number 1. Pretty neat to watch a bunker being built from start to finish. The first picture shows the footprint of the newly dug out bunker. The second picture shows the drainage that was placed inside the bunker. The capillary concrete liner was then added. Lastly in the third picture, you will see the final product. As we document the progress moving forward, we will be sending out more updates.

MEMBERSHIP Dear Members, I hope you are having a prosperous New Year! We are extremely excited about the capital improvements being done to the golf course but not as excited as Superintendent Todd Lawrence. Todd who has been our Superintendent for over 20 years continues to rave about the hands on project he and his team are overseeing. Land Innovations working around the clock to rebuild our bunkers with new drainage and capillary concrete liners. This technology will control the moisture of the bunkers to rapidly drain rain events while keeping the sand dry more consistently. Even if you are not a golfer please ask Todd to explain this technology to you and he will make you a big fan too! What Todd seems most excited about is the final product after he adds the G Angle sand and Zoysia grass surrounds to the bunkers. The G Angle sand is the same sand we have at Treyburn Country Club which will be bright white. Going from the brownish sand we have had to this G Angle sand will really add the wow factor to these new bunkers visually. The contractor will also be adding 2 new tee boxes, repairing cart paths and much more. If you get the chance please thank Superintendent Todd Lawrence for his hard work and enthusiasm on the project which should be complete by April 1st. Besides the golf, The Country Club at Wakefield Plantation will also be adding 4 lighted Pickleball Courts at The Sports Club. With the capital improvements we will be increasing our Full Golf initiation fee to $30,000 and Sports Club initiation fee to $5,000 this spring! If you are interested in upgrading to Full Golf or have a friend, neighbor or colleague who may be interested in joining please let me know. Wishing you a great start to 2022! NEW BUNKER SYSTEM
Our bunker project is moving along well and we are really excited for the new bunker drainage system being installed. During this project we are redefining the bunker edges, installing new drainage, adding a capillary concrete liner system and new G Angle sand. The capillary concrete system is a patented and engineered polymer-based concrete installed at a two-inch depth throughout the entire bunker. Once in place, the concrete has to cure for 48 hours and then the new sand is installed. The way the new system works is when we receive rainfall, the water will move down through the sand and into the capillary concrete liner, then travel laterally to the drainage lines. With the water travelling through the liner and not through the sand, the bunkers will not wash out. With this new system in place the maintenance staff will be able to put the bunkers back in play in a matter of hours instead of days. Todd Lawrence, Director of Golf Course Maintenance

DINING EVENTS & INFORMATION What a difference this year's Holiday Season was from last year in 2020! It was so wonderful having everyone back with their families and businesses to celebrate the holiday season. I am so thrilled to say that my sweet nephew, Robert Raymond Tatum III, was born in December! My brother and his wife are settling in wonderfully to being new parents, and it has been the joy of my life thus far to watch them on this new journey with my sweet new baby nephew! We rang in the
New Year here at Wakefield with a spectacular New Year's Eve Party that everyone enjoyed! Coming up in the months of January & February we have some of my favorite club events to look forward to, such as our Valentine's Couples Dinner, and our Sweetheart Brunch, as well as our always popular Father/Daughter Dance! Each year in January with McConnell Golf, all department heads travel to our sister property, Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro to attend our annual Symposium in order to review the past year and highlight our successes! I always look forward to catching up with colleagues from our sister properties. Thank you all so much for such a wonderful 2021 here at Wakefield Plantation! It is such a pleasure to be able to serve you all and be part of the Wakefield family. As always please contact me with any and all of your event and catering needs here at Wakefield. February Cookie of the Month: Marbled Valentine Sugar Cookies Sean O'Neill ~ Executive Chef at Treyburn Country Club
This is a simple cookie recipe that will last for generations. My Nonni used to make these cookies for me when I was younger; at first to be her valentine, then to give to my valentine. Now I make them with my daughter and tell her she is my valentine. Enjoy! Ingredients: ½ Cup Unsalted Butter, softened ½ Cup Granulated Sugar 1 Large Egg 1½ TSP Vanilla Extract ¼ TSP Salt ½ TSP Baking Powder 2 Cup AP Flour Red Gel food coloring Directions: In a large bowl or stand mixer, beat together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Mix in egg and vanilla, followed by salt and baking powder. Scrape the bowl as needed. Gradually mix in flour, increasing speed as needed until dough is fully combined and no streaks remain. Divide dough in half, transferring half to a clean bowl, set aside. Add a small amount of dark pink gel food coloring to the remaining dough. Beat until fully tinted and no streaks remain. Pinch off golf ball sized portions of dough, rolling into balls. Create a pattern of alternate colored balls of dough on your work station. Gently, knead all dough together until swirls of color are visible. Do not over mix. Shape into a disc and wrap in plastic. Chill for 30-60 minutes. Preheat oven to 350°F. Prepare a baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper. Roll out dough to ¼-inch thick, on a lightly floured surface. Cut out heart shapes. Space two inches apart on a prepared baking sheet. Freeze cookies for 15 minutes. Press together remaining dough and scraps, re-wrap in plastic and keeping chilled until ready to roll and cut again. Bake at 350°F for 12 minutes. Allow cookies to rest on the pan for two minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

TENNIS TIME It's time to get the 2022 ball rolling at the tennis courts. Spring teams are beginning to form and it is looking like another busy season on the Horizon. In February our courts will once again play a host to a state wide USTA junior tournament. Being one of the first tournaments on the USTA calendar we are sure to see some of the best juniors in NC take the courts. Also in February it will be time for the pickleballers to break out their paddles and compete for a parking spot during our Mixed Doubles Club Championship. The current update on the pickleball courts is that we have finally made it through the permitting process. We should be breaking ground in late March with estimated completion date of May 27th. The reason we are not breaking ground sooner has to do with the temperatures in the current winter season. Once the playing surface is poured, the courts needs 4-6 weeks of settling with the average temperatures being about 32 degrees. This 4-6 week settling period is very crucial to longevity and structural integrity of the courts. We know it has been a long time coming but we are so excited to finally see some light at the end of the tunnel for this project.
Kyle Thortsen, Corporate Director of Tennis
WELCOME ASSISANT TENNIS PROFESSIONAL DAVIS HUMPHRIES Around the tennis courts we are very happy to introduce our new assistant tennis professional Davis Humphries. Davis is a Raleigh native that grew up playing tennis at the Seven Oaks Club and also in the academy program at North Hills. In 2014 Davis attended The University of Tennessee, Knoxville to pursue his career in marketing. He chose Tennessee because of his love for SEC football and being close to his family here in Raleigh. After college his career began in pharmaceutical sales in Iowa for dermatology and pediatric offices. After a couple years his love for the game of tennis came calling in, and in 2019 he moved back to Raleigh to purse a career in the tennis industry. Davis is very excited to bring his skill set and passion for the game to Wakefield.

The golf staff has built an exciting schedule of events for this year that will create new excitement for our members and build upon our traditions. In this newsletter, you will find the schedule of events for the 2022 season. The Wakefield Plantation golf handbooks will be emailed to the membership, and hard copies will be available in the golf shop. We would like to recognize our own teaching professional, Erica Britt, for being named an Operation 36 Top 50 Golf Coach for the second consecutive year. Erica has been responsible for the growth of this program for our juniors and ladies over the past three years. Congratulations to Erica on her deserving reward and a job well done! I would personally like to thank the Wakefield Plantation membership for your support over the past few years and we are looking forward to a new golf year. I appreciate the tremendous patronage our members have shown to the golf operation. As always, my door is open with any questions or concerns. Adam McLaughlin, PGA, Director of Golf

AT THE TURN
LEARN THE PROPER TECHNIQUE FOR THE BUMP AND RUN SHOT Set Up: Stand closer allowing shaft to be more upright and choke down on the club. Narrow stance drawing your front foot back slightly and ball in the middle of your feet. As you lean your weight towards the target, allow hands and shaft to lean.
Find the landing spot and pick the right club. If the Pin up close with not a lot of room to work with use more lofted club. (SW or PW) vs. A pin that is in the back of the green use (9 iron or 8 Iron). Our goal is to land the ball a third of the way to the target and let the green do the rest of the work for you. Stroke Thoughts: Quiet lower body maintaining posture and weight on left side. Feel as though you are putting it. "Y" to "Y". Exaggerate keeping your head down and maintain your posture until the ball is done rolling.
