CLUB NEWS Happy Summer! I hope by now you have had a chance to enjoy the new Breaker Bar & Grille down at the pool. If you have not met Deborah Johnson yet, please introduce yourself as she is our new Sports Club Food & Beverage Manager. Lots of fun and exciting events planned for this summer and fall at the Sports Club. It was great to have the Rex Hospital Open back this year after being cancelled last year because of Covid. Many thanks for your support of this event. While it may have not looked the same, the crowds on the weekend made it feel the same. After tying at twenty-one under par, Mito Pereira beat Stephen Jaeger on the first play off hole by holing a three foot birdie putt. It was great to have professional golf back at Wakefield Plantation. Special shout out to Golf Course Superintendent Todd Lawrence and his staff for their remarkable work given that we had close to four inches of rain in a twenty four hour period. Lastly on July 6th, we will be hosting a golf marathon to raise money for the Folds of Honor. I will be joining the golf staff as we will be playing from sun up to sun down to raise money for this great organization. We will be providing live updates while playing. Their mission is to provide scholarships to spouses and children of America's fallen and disabled service members. See below for the link should you wish to donate or learn more about this organization. http://support.foldsofhonor.org/site/TR?team_id=3232&fr_id=1291&pg=team As always, we cannot thank you enough for your support of the club. We look forward to an awesome rest of the summer. Be well and safe! Michael Thomas, Club Manager

Instructions Note: This dough requires chilling. Cream butter and sugars in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Cream until light and fluffy. You can also use a hand mixer. Add oil and stir until smooth. Add egg and vanilla, mix until smooth, then stir in the salt and baking soda. Mix in oats and flour until just mixed. Stir in coconut, nuts, and cornflakes. Scoop 2 Tablespoon balls of cookie dough onto a cookie sheet covered in wax or parchment paper. No need to spread the balls out, you’re just going to chill them. Cover with plastic wrap and chill at least one hour. (If you chill longer than 4 hours you may need to let them warm up a few minutes on the counter before baking.) Preheat oven to 350°F. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper or silpat baking mats. Place cookies 2 inches apart on prepared cookie sheets. Lightly press down with the palm of your hand. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until the bottoms just start to turn golden brown. Cool at least 5 minutes on the cookie sheet before removing to rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 1 month

ORIN SWIFT WINE EXPERIENCE Saturday, August 21st I 6:00PM-9:00PM Ages: Adults I Location: Reserve Fee: TBD
Mark your calendars and watch for reservations opening for a top notch wine experience! We will be hosting an Orin Swift wine experience featuring one California’s storied winemakers. The history of Orin Swift Cellars dates back to 1995 when on a lark, David Swift Phinney took a friend up on an offer and went to Florence, Italy to spend a semester “studying”. During that time, he was introduced to wine, how it was made, and got hooked. A few more years of university led to graduation and eventually a job at Robert Mondavi Winery in 1997 as a temporary harvest worker. Deciding that if he was going to work this hard, it would eventually have to be for himself, he founded Orin Swift Cellars in 1998; Orin is his father’s middle name and Swift is his mother’s maiden name. With two tons of zinfandel and not much else, he spent the next decade making wine for others as well as himself and grew the brand to what it is today. Paired with delicious food from our talented chefs, the selection from Orin Swift with be one you do not want to miss. This will be a social move and mingle event centered around experiencing the wine, the stories behind the process, and the food stations! Attendance will be -limited so make sure to keep an eye out for calendar sign up! (Pricing to be released on McConnell Calendar Event sign up 30 days prior to event)”

TENNIS TIME Ladies and Gentleman it is officially hot outside! Before I get into what is coming up this summer, I want to take a moment to recap the last two months. Our program welcomed a new tennis professional Caitlin Whoriskey to the team in May. Caitlin has been a huge asset to the team and we are so excited to what her share her knowledge of the game with our members for the years to come. This spring we hosted our first ever pickleball beat the Pros charity event for the "The Joel Fund". Over $800 was raised in less than four hours as teams of members came out to challenge our professional team of Caitlin and Kyle. The spring USTA league season was wildly busy and Wakefield crushed it sending three teams to compete in the State Championships at the end of June. Congratulations to teams Duerr, Spina and Wolborsky on this accomplishment, we wish wish you all the best as you get the opportunity to compete with the best teams across the state. Ok it is time for some summer fun so let's start with the juniors. Over the months of July and August we will be offering three weeks of junior tennis camps. Each of these weeks our staff will be providing two age categories
of camps, our tennis tots (4-7yrs.) and our junior tennis (8-12 yrs.). These camps are full of fun but also a great opportunity for our players to sharpen their skills on the courts and maybe even throw a water balloon or two. If you would like to sign up please visit the Wakefield event calendar or give our pro-shop a call. Also coming up this summer is our USTA junior L-4 tournament. This tournament will take place July 12th-13th and is a great opportunity to see some of the top junior players in the state compete. These kids really are amazing to watch! On the adult side it's time for some Mixed Doubles! Not only is it Mixed Doubles league season, but its also time for one of our most popular tournaments of the year, the Mixed Doubles Club Championships. This year's tournament will take place on Friday, July 30th and wrap up with the finals on Sunday, August 1st. Also coming this summer is our sold out Men's tennis/golf trip to beautiful Old North State Club. The guys will head out Friday morning July 9th for three days of non-stop Pickleball, Tennis and Golf fun. Trips like there are what makes being a member of McConnell Golf Clubs such an awesome experience that local clubs just cannot compete with. We know it's hot out there but it's not going to slow us down at the Wakefield tennis center. If you would like to get in on the fun this summer please give us a call and we will happily get you plugged into the action. No matter what your age or sill level we have programs for everyone in the family. We hope to see you on the courts soon!

TEE IT UP The golf season is full swing at the Country Club at Wakefield Plantation. In the past couple months we have hosted many successful events including the Azalea Ladies Member-Guest, Tuscarora Men's Member-Guest, and the Rex Hospital Open. The membership and our staff were excited to see these events back at our club this spring. The Rex Hospital Open was a huge success this year after returning from being cancelled last year due to Covid-19. Todd Lawrence and his staff did an amazing job with the golf course after we received over 3 inches of rain on Wednesday and Thursday of the tournament week. Mito Pereira was our champion this year with a score of 21-under par for the four rounds. He captured the title in extra holes over the current number 1 ranked player on the Korn Ferry Tour, Stephen Jager.
