Get ready to embrace the beauty of spring at the Water’s Edge Country Club on Smith Mountain Lake There are only a few weeks left of winter, and I am looking forward to warmer spring-like weather this month

We are currently in the process of doing a couple of projects around the club We have just finished up sealing a section of the wall and foundation in front of the clubhouse to keep water away from the building. Next is reinforcing the retaining wall at the pool area in order for us to plan other projects for 2026. Once the retaining wall repairs are completed, we will be resealing the parking lot. I would like to thank everyone ahead of time for your patience as we complete our scheduled projects.

One of the best things about spring is that the days are longer, and with the longer days, it’s easier to enjoy the club. We have lots of events and activities in the upcoming months, like our Wine Dinner, Men’s & Ladies opening days, Breakfast with the Easter Bunny, and Easter Brunch Also, be sure to mark your calendar for the Kentucky Derby Party on May 3rd

It will soon be time for outdoor dining; be sure to make a reservation for lunch or dinner to enjoy the warm weather Chef John is ready and excited for the upcoming 2025 season The culinary team has done an exceptional job creating the best dining experience for our members We had a lot of positive feedback on the food and plan to build on our successes

We thank you all for that feedback and welcome good or constructive comments. We always pass these comments on to team members, as words of encouragement and motivation are always appreciated.

COURSEUPDATE

JEFFSNYDER,GOLFCOURSESUPERINTENDENT

Ice, snow, rain, and brutal cold. Another crazy winter. Seems like carts have been on the paths more than off this winter. For the month of January, the course was only open for 4 days with little or no play on those days. Seems like all we’ve been doing the last few months is cleaning up after storms. Helene caused considerable damage that we cleaned up. Then the ice storm brought down more trees and limbs and we’re still working on finishing up that debris.

Our Gradall has been in the shop, when returned we’ll complete clean up on trees the machine is needed for. We’ve removed the majority of our weak or dead trees and will begin to selectively remove additional trees that are needed for additional sunlight and air movement. Morning sun is essential for quality turf and the course needs some thinning. When tree work is completed, we’ll rent a stump grinder and finish off these stumps.

As the property firms up and we close out the winter, we still have many plans. We will be going through fairways and finishing up some “plugging” of some thin areas. We also will be topdressing fairways and continue doing so throughout the season. We budgeted additional money to combat ABW’s that continue to be a problem. This insect has 4-5 life cycles in a year. The products used throughout the season need to be targeted to maximize the stage at the time. Capital investments include another rough mower, blowers, and a weather station to assist us in our watering plan. Using this information in conjunction with wetting agent products used on the course we hope to only improve on “water management.” We have been leveling sprinkler heads and added some quick connects to use hoses where we can.

Our goal is to be the best we can be. Everyone has a part in this as well. Please fix your ball marks on the greens and one other. Please replace divots in fairways. Remember, we’d like to replace fairway divots as much as possible, and only sand if needed The enter and exit posts are gone, so please “scatter” as much as possible when driving, especially around bunkers

Let’s have a great year!!

KRISTINAWRAY,EQUESTRIANCENTERMANAGER

Hello everyone! I hope the winter months have treated you well. The horses, cat, and pig did wonderfully through the winter. Many of them kept their blankets on for quite some time but they thoroughly enjoyed the extra hay and grain they received to keep them warm. If you are anything like us, you are ready to shake off the cold and see warmer days. With warmer days comes the shedding season. The horses will be losing their winter coats and will need lots of brushing. Adults and children are welcome to call and schedule a time to help us groom. You yourself will go home with a coat of hair so feel free to bring an extra change of clothes.

I am very happy to announce that we will be having our Derby Party again this year. Details of this event will be sent out very soon so please be on the lookout. This event helps out the barn significantly, so we hope to have a great turn out! If you have any questions or would like to assist in helping with setting up or planning, you can do so by contacting myself or Ruth Rice. We hope to see you all there for the greatest two minutes in sports!

2025 Summer Camp dates are now out. We are so excited to already have kids signed up. Itineraries along with lunch/dinner menus will be sent out in March. If you would like to sign up your child for camp feel free to email me at barn@watersedgecountryclub.com or calling the barn at (540) 576-2714. Camp flyers with all the information can be sent via email or be picked up at the Equestrian Center office.

Dates for other events such as the ice cream socials, bingo nights, movie nights, and other events will be added to the calendar very soon. We are anticipating a fun filled year and hope to have you join us!

FITNESS NEWS

Tennis&PickleballNews

As spring nears, we are busy readying the courts for the upcoming tennis and pickleball seasons. The hard courts (pickleball and tennis) are playable now. Therefore, weather permitting, regular pickleball is scheduled to resume in March on Monday, Friday and Saturday at 9:00 a.m. A pickleball social is on tap for Saturday, April 26th at 4:00PM so mark your calendar for a fun occasion!

Servicing of the soft courts should be completed in mid-April when 9 a.m. M-W-F doubles tennis will begin again. In the interim, the ball machine is available for tennis fans age 18 and older who want to tune up their play following the winter. You may reserve the ball machine online and check out the key at the golf shop The fee is $15 for a 90-minute session Prior to your first use, however, you will also need to set up a time with me to go over the ball machine’s proper use and storage It’s easy to learn and fun to hit against but can be seriously damaged by improper operation

Be sure to check Weekly Happenings for more specifics on both regular play and upcoming spring events which are in the planning stages. Remember, it is never too early to get ready for summer sports. Now is a great time to take advantage of the Water’s Edge work-out room!

I look forward to seeing you on court soon. As always, you may contact me directly at: 434-927-5039 for ball machine instructions, private lessons or racquet restringing.
