Spring is in sight and fast approaching! There are only a few weeks left of winter and I am looking forward to warmer springlike weather this month One of the best things about spring is that the days are longer and with the longer days it’s easier to enjoy the club Speaking of longer days, Daylight Savings begins Sunday March 10th Clocks will “spring forward” one hour at 2:00am
Our team is ready and excited for the upcoming 2024 season Recently, we had a lot of positive feedback on the food that the culinary team has been presenting We thank you all for that feedback and welcome good or constructive comments We always pass these comments on to team members as words of encouragement and motivation are always appreciated
The Water’s Edge team managers have just gotten back from the McConnell Golf symposium It was a great team building experience for us Each year we come back with great ideas that were shared by each McConnell club
We have also had a tremendous amount of excitement about the wine club and tasting We are still taking memberships to our new wine club Please let us know if you want to join Our first wine tasting was a hit, we had four incredible wines It was fun and educational
Real estate inventories are still low in the Water’s Edge community
We are fortunate to have added an invitational membership, with only a few properties for sale in our community If you know anyone who would like to join the club, please share Ruth Rice’s contact information

Golf at Treyburn Country Club on Monday
Class I and Class II members have reciprocal access to the other McConnell properties. Historically, the McConnell Golf clubs are normally closed on Mondays. Treyburn Country Club is now open for play on Mondays and closed on Tuesday. What better way to spend your Monday than to take a short ride to Durham!
Please refer to the Member Services section regarding updates to the reciprocal play. If interested, please contact the golf shop at 540-576-3343 and ask for assistance making a tee time.
We have had another crazy winter, wet and warm! Seems like carts have been on the paths more than off this winter. The weather slowed us a bit but we are still busy finishing up some tree work and getting ready for the golfing season. We’ve removed the majority of our weak or dead trees and will begin to selectively remove trees that are needed for additional sunlight and air movement. Morning sun is essential for quality turf and the course needs some thinning. When tree work is completed, we will rent a stump grinder and finish off these stumps
As the ground firms up and we close out the winter, we will be going through fairways and finishing some “plugging” of thin areas We also will topdress fairways and continue doing so through the season Additional monies are budgeted to combat the ABW’s that continue to be a problem These insects have 4-5 life cycles in a year The products used throughout the season need to be targeted to maximize the effectiveness of the application
A new greens roller was purchased last year This is a larger, faster unit and has helped us tremendously Many times golfers would catch us before we finished
This year, we are replacing an old tractor that has served us well but needed to be retired. We are also paving our shop road and purchasing 4 “runabouts” for the crew. We have also purchased a fairway verti-cutter to help us remove some of the “puffiness” in the fairways. Our goal is to be the best we can be. Everyone has a part in this as well. Please fix your ball marks and replace divots in fairways. Remember, we ’ d like to replace as much turf as possible; only use sand when needed. We’ve also removed the enter and exit posts. Scatter carts as much as you can, especially around bunkers.

KRISTINAWRAY,EQUESTRIANCENTERMANAGERHello! I hope everyone is doing well! If you are anything like us, we are impatiently waiting for warm and dryer weather Although the winter has been mild, it sure has been awfully wet Vicky and I have been working hard to prevent the horses from getting thrush in their hooves Thrush is a common anaerobic bacterial infection of the horse’s hoof tissue characterized by a black, necrotic (dead), foul-smelling material and can appear in any season
Thrush typically affects the central frog or grooves adjacent to and in the middle of the frog (collateral sulcus). However, severe cases of thrush can also invade the white line, sole, and sensitive layers of the foot Although it is not contagious, without treatment and proper precautionary measures it can become dangerous In extreme and severe cases, horses can lose their frog along with the outer parts of their hooves called the hoof wall By preventing this we diligently clean the horses hooves daily removing all mud, grass, rocks, and other debris that lodges in the bottom of their feet We also work on pasture management, making sure that the fields drain properly to prevent standing water The horses are also on a strict farrier schedule to ensure their hooves are properly trimmed to aid in hoof health Thrush is typically easy to treat We have only experienced mild cases that required the help of a few products Our go-to is a product called Kopertox This is a liquid formula that kills the bad bacteria in the hooves and aids in the drying of the hooves to prevent more bacteria from growing. Thrush can appear in any season but the horses and ourselves are much happier working outside when it is warmer.
Speaking of warmer weather, we are excited to have you sign up your kids and grandkids for our summer camps. We have so many new ideas for activities that we think the kids will truly enjoy We have continued to work the horses throughout the winter months to ensure their ability to work hard in the warmer months Don't forget, we still offer ring rides, trail rides, and lessons during the winter months! If you would like to schedule a ride or to sign up for camps please call the barn at 540-576-2714 or email us at: barn@watersedgecountryclub com
As always we are thankful for your continued support!
HORSE FACTS:
Horses' hooves are made from Keratin, the same thing our fingernails are made of.
You can tell if a horse is cold by feeling behind their ears.
Male horses have 40 teeth and a female horse has 36.

MARCH COOKIE OF THE MONTH
LemonCookieRecipe
Recipe by Todd JacksonMy daughter isn’t a fan of rich chocolate desserts, but she loves anything lemon, and these cookies are one of her favorites, which means I can usually enlist her help in the kitchen when I make them.

10 1/2 ounces 10x sugar
12 ounces of egg yolks
2 tablespoons grated lemon zest
1 1/2 pounds of all-purpose flour
Directions

Add the egg yolks slowly on low speed, fully incorporating and scraping down the sides of the bowl after each egg Blend in the lemon zest
Add the flour, mixing just to incorporate 3
Using a plain tip, pipe out cookies from a pastry bag onto parchment-lined sheet pans 4
Bake in a 400-degree oven until lightly brown 8 to 10 minutes 5
Let cookies cool, dust with powdered sugar, and serve Yields 5 dozen cookies 6
APRIL COOKIE OF THE MONTH
Butter Pecan Sandies Cookie Recipe
Recipe by Bruce McIntoshIngredients
Butter Pecan is a flavor that reminds me of my earlier years This recipe has been a great find for me; now, I get to share it with all of you!
1 1/3 cups pecan halves
2/3 cup light brown sugar, packed
2/3 cup granulated sugar
8 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
1/2 teaspoon table salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons Pure Vanilla Extract
Directions
1
2
4
3/4 teaspoon butter-rum flavor
1 teaspoon cider vinegar or white vinegar
1 large egg
2 cups King Arthur Gluten-Free Measure-for-Measure Flour
1 1/3 cups butterscotch chips
1/3 cup granulated sugar, mixed with 1 to 1 1/4 teaspoons salt, for topping*
Preheat the oven to 375°F Lightly grease (or line with parchment) two baking sheets
Place the pecans in a single layer in a pan, and bake until they've darkened a bit and smell toasty, about 8 to 9 minutes Set them aside to cool, then chop coarsely
In a large bowl, combine the sugars, butter, shortening, salt, baking soda, vanilla, flavor, and vinegar, beating until smooth and creamy
3 Beat in the egg, again, beating until smooth Scrape the bottom and sides of the bowl with a spatula to make sure everything is thoroughly combined
5
Mix in the flour, then the chips and toasted nuts
6
If you're going to refrigerate the dough, cover the bowl, and refrigerate for about 4 to 5 hours; or overnight Cookie dough refrigerated for 3 1/2 to 4 hours will spread moderately; chilled overnight, it will spread much less
7
Mix the 1/3 cup sugar and salt for the coating, and put it in a bowl Use a spoon (or a tablespoon cookie scoop) to scoop 1 1/2" balls of dough into the sugar/salt mixture, rolling to coat Then transfer to the prepared baking sheets, leaving 2" between them on all sides; they'll spread quite a bit Or, use a teaspoon cookie scoop to scoop 1 1/4" balls of dough
8
Bake the cookies for 11 to 13 minutes 11 minutes for smaller cookies, 13 for larger ones Their edges will be chestnut brown and their tops a lighter golden brown (For dough that's been refrigerated, add 30 seconds to 1 minute to those baking times ) Remove them from the oven, and cool on the pan until they're set enough to move without breaking Repeat with the remaining dough
9
Store cookies, well wrapped, at room temperature for several days; freeze for longer storage
