A NOTE FROM JEFF SNYDER - YOUR GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
Spring is in the air and we are very busy getting the course ready for another golfing season As discussed previously, ABW’s (Annual Bluegrass Weevil) caused some damage to our bentgrass fairways and tees last year. We have sodded most of the affected areas and we will be continuing to plug and sod some of the smaller areas and expect recovery to move along nicely this spring
Our first ABW treatment has been completed and we are scheduled for 4 to 5 more applications throughout the year to keep populations at a manageable level. Currently, no insecticides are available to completely eradicate these insects These products will help keep populations at a level so the bentgrass can survive the light damage
As mentioned before, we have committed a significant amount of money to purchase the products to help combat this issue now and yearly moving forward We have made two applications on fairways and 1 on tees and greens to help control the POA. We do have the POA on the greens seed heading, but that will be controlled with upcoming applications to our greens The greens are healing well from our aerification and are a couple of weeks ahead of last year’s recover due to “pushing” the healing with additional nutrients With the
warmer weather we have experienced thus far the first part of this year has also increased soil temperatures which increases growth to help recover quicker
You will see some new faces out working on the maintenance crew and with the addition of these employees, we will be able to get back to walk mowing greens on a regular basis Several stumps have been ground and areas seeded throughout the course and new grass will be starting to grow soon Walking paths from the tees to the fairways have been added for our walkers We did have a little scalping when we first cut these in, but this will quickly go away as the turf becomes accustomed to this new height of cut.
We need your help to keep our course in the best shape possible Please scatter as much as possible with carts onto the fairways and rough Repairing your ball marks is another way you can help and make a huge difference in the playability of the greens. I was always told to repair my ball mark and one more If everyone followed this instruction, the ball mark issue would go away Repairing your divots will also help improve the course conditions If a divot is intact, replace it and step it down and you’re done If only a partial divot is salvageable, sand the balance, smooth and you’re done. If the sand is mounded above the surrounding area, it can damage our mowers which can cause the quality cut to be off so please try and smooth the sand as much as possible
As a reminder, the course is not for walking, pets or personal carts. Please remind your guest through the season. Our crew is very excited for this coming golfing season and expect to provide great playing conditions for everyone to enjoy

CLUB UPDATE FROM THE EQUESTRIAN CENTER
A NOTE FROM SAMANTHA LESTER - THE EQUESTRIAN CENTER MANAGER
Spring is finally here and we are so excited! I must say I have a herd of happy horses that are loving every minute of it! Our pastures have been fertilized and we have repaired many sections of the fences All of the horses are shedding their winter coats and love all the extra grooming they are getting.
Throughout the years, The Water's Edge Equestrian Center has rescued a total of 6 horses due to starvation and other bad situations All but one were able to be used in camps and in the riding program Each one of those horses still hold a special place in our hearts. Our goal is to rehabilitate the horses and allow them to enjoy the rest of their lives to the fullest!
This is just a reminder that we don't just offer lessons to just children. We welcome adults who are interested in learning to ride or who have lost some confidence in riding from a bad experience It can takes time and patience to feel comfortable in the saddle We are here to help!
The Water's Edge Equestrian Center offers summer horse camps for all ages, boarding, lessons and trail rides. Camps are filling up quickly. Be sure to sign up early. Please call or email us.
Please call to schedule a ride at least two days ahead of time
Thank you to all of those who have visited and brought treats.
Horse Facts Horse Facts
Many horses do not like the taste of anything citrus Horses can be allergic to barn dust, flies, and bees A saddle that does not fit a horses back properly, can make the horse uncomfortable and can cause other damage to their back Pickling lime (the kind that is used to make pickles) can be used on a horses' wounds to keep the flies off (Trust me on this I've used it and it works!!)
Horses are herd animals and feel safer when they are apart of a herd.
