COURSEUPDATE

“To say the weather has been a problem late September through early October, is an understatement I would like to share our prayers with our brothers and sisters down south that just got wiped out and lost everything The weather all season has been a roller coaster June 18”, July 7 98”, August 6 65”, September into early October over 10”

The hurricane was bad enough, but we kept getting more after it came through and it just would not dry out Fairways in places were pushing 4” tall We had to use rotary mowers to work these heights down Mowed them at 1 ½” first, came back again at 1”, and raised the actual fairway mowers to ¾” to try to start tightening them up The course did take a step back due to all this moisture; the grass just did not like the “wet feet” for that extended period of time

I appreciate everyone ’ s patience through this event and we ’ re doing our best to get the course back Areas will need some re-seeding and aerifying We will have a contractor come in and aerify fairways in November and follow them with some sand topdressing Leaf season has arrived, blowers and vacs are ready to go All this to get the course back to great conditions and enjoy the fall season As a reminder, replace your divots and step down so the blowers don’t pull them up Ball mark repair, no matter what course you go to, can always be better “Repair yours and one other” has been the motto for a long time

2025 Aerification Schedule

March 17th & 18th

September 2nd & 3rd

FALL MAINTENANCE PLAN

Aeration and Topdressing - Aeration is crucial for relieving soil compaction and improving water and air movement through the turf We’ve scheduled aeration for November The greens will receive a light topdressing to maintain smoothness and speed Expect minor disruptions, but these processes ensure long-term greens health

Leaf Management - As trees begin shedding their leaves, our team will be working to remove debris This prevents the buildup of organic material that can damage the course We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to keep the course clear

Irrigation Adjustments - With cooler temperatures, irrigation needs will decrease We're adjusting the system to avoid overwatering while ensuring the turf remains hydrated We will also inspect the drainage systems to ensure they’re in top condition for the wetter months ahead

Turf Nutrition We're applying a balanced fall fertilizer that strengthens the grass before winter dormancy This will help the course “bounce back” in spring with lush, healthy growth

Autumn is finally here! If you've ever had the pleasure to walk the driveway or ride horseback during the fall months at the barn then you know how fall completely embraces you The cool crisp air, the birds singing, leaves dancing in the wind, and the smell of years end and new beginnings surround you The horses enjoy being ridden in cooler weather so now is the perfect time to schedule a ride as we have many openings Get your horse fix today by scheduling a ride or simply visiting for pets

The ball machine will be available all winter By using the tennis ball machine during the winter, you can keep improving your game and stay ready for the next season If you are age 18 or older, you may sign up at the Water’s Edge golf shop to reserve the ball machine and/or check out the key The fee is $15 for a 90-minute session Prior to your first use, however, you will also need to set up a time with me to go over the ball machine’s proper use and storage It’s easy to learn and fun to hit against but can be seriously damaged by improper operation.

Dress Warmly - Layer Up: Wear moisture-wicking thermal layers, a hat, gloves with grip, and a warm but breathable jacket to keep comfortable while practicing Footwear: Use shoes with good traction to prevent slipping on potentially icy or wet surfaces

Warm-Up Properly - Dynamic Stretching: Warm up with dynamic stretches to get your blood flowing and muscles warm before hitting the court Gradual Intensity: Start with gentle rallies before increasing the intensity of your practice

Have Fun and Stay Motivated - Invite Friends: Consider inviting fellow players to join you Practicing together can add a fun social element and keep you motivated Set Goals: Use the winter to focus on specific skills you want to improve, whether it’s consistency, footwork, or shot placement By taking these precautions, you can enjoy practicing with your tennis ball machine outside during the winter while improving your game!

When We Care started in 1990, the goal was to provide Christmas to a few underprivileged children in Franklin County Several businesses and individuals came together, raised money, and provided for several children that year. From that point, it has grown into We Care helping over 1,000 underprivileged children at Christmas alone Their Christmas event involves having approximately 100 volunteers over a period of a week. During the week they have the parents of the children come and shop at their Christmas "store"

At the end of the week, they have a party for the children. The party involves refreshments, games, and, of course, SANTA CLAUS Just to see the look on a child's face when they see Santa and knowing that they will have something to open on Christmas morning makes

Christmas more meaningful One of the amazing qualities of their organization is that every dollar that is donated stays right here in Franklin County We Care relies solely on donations that they receive from the community that allow them to continue having such a wonderful event As part of The Water’s Edge Footprints on the Green initiative, we are collecting new, unwrapped toys from November 1st-December 6th. There will be a drop box at the clubhouse for donations

If you have in questions or would like to volunteer for We Care, please call Jerry W. Greer at 540-483-7900. If you would like to send a monetary donation, please mail to :

DECEMBER COOKIE OF THE MONTH

White Chocolate & Cranberry Cookies

Ingredients

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 cup white sugar

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 large egg

1 tablespoon brandy

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1 cup dried cranberries

3/4 cup white chocolate chips

Recipe by Kenric Hunt, Executive Chef at Brook Valley Country Club

““Every year, without fail, my grandma and I would gather in her cozy kitchen to make her famous white chocolate and cranberry cookies for Christmas. It was our cherished tradition, the perfect mix of flour, sugar, and laughter As we measured, mixed, and baked, the kitchen would fill with the irresistible aroma of those festive treats The cookies weren't just delicious; they were a warm and comforting reminder of the love we had for one another ” - Kenric Hunt

Directions

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) Grease 2 cookie sheets

Beat brown sugar, white sugar, and butter with an electric mixer in a large bowl until creamy Add egg and brandy and beat until incorporated.

Combine flour and baking soda in a separate bowl Stir flour mixture into the butter mixture until just combined Fold in cranberries and white chocolate chips

Drop batter by heaping spoonful onto the prepared cookie sheets.

Bake in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes, switching racks halfway through; cookies will still appear slightly doughy

Remove from the oven and let cool briefly on the cookie sheets before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
