CLUB UPDATE

A NOTE FROM ROBERT LAMBERT - YOUR CLUB MANAGER

Although summer is ending, fall is my favorite time of the year as cooler weather arrives, the beginning of college football, beautiful autumn foliage, and of course the upcoming holiday season. It’s just a great time of the year to be at Smith Mountain Lake There are still plenty of activities to enjoy at the Water’s Edge Country Club

Jeff Snyder and his crew will be aerifying greens right after Labor Day and with a little help from mother nature the greens should be in great shape by the end of the month This is a great time of the year for golf, so please take advantage of the cooler temperatures with lower humidity We just finished up a great member-member tournament, everyone had a wonderful time We have a couple of Footprints on the Green golf events coming up for Carilion’s Children Hospital and Cool Branch Volunteer Fire & Rescue Squad. Please give me a call if you would like more information Our men’s and ladies closing events are coming up in October, for information please contact the Golf Shop

Pickleball continues to grow at the Water’s Edge and as premium court times fill up in the mornings, we are working on court reservations that will be on our website for pickleball & tennis There is equipment in the tennis shop for pickleball and tennis if you need equipment to play, all we ask is to please return it when you finish.

Please stop by the barn to congratulate Kristina Wray who is our new equestrian manager Kristina has been working at the barn for 10 years If you have not had a chance to visit, stop by and ask about riding lessons, and trail rides. They have had another successful year of young equestrian camps, which creates memories for a lifetime

Many of our summer staff have returned to school and we wish them the best. I am grateful for our core staff like Brittany, Jasmine, Ivy, Savana, and Savannah They do a tremendous job!

A NOTE FROM ED CURRIN - YOUR GOLF PROFESSIONAL STAFF

The 2023 Season is rapidly winding down We have had a very busy tournament season, but do not put your clubs away as we still have several events on tap!

We will aerify greens on September 5th, and consequently, the course will be closed on September 5th and 6th. We will be hosting a “Next Round Trade In” on September 21st from 10:30 – 4:30 where you will be able to turn in any used golf clubs you might have for Pro Shop credit! It will be a great way to clean out your old set from your garage

Please remember that private carts are not allowed on the course at any time Walking the course when not golfing is prohibited As always, we would like to remind players to continue to take care of the golf course by replacing your divots and fixing your ball marks on the greens.

CLUB UPDATE

A NOTE FROM JEFF SNYDER - YOUR GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

Summer is here and the heat and humidity has been brutal Our programs are working overtime and doing our best to eliminate as much stress as possible.

We made our fifth ABW application and will continue our scouting to see if another is needed Next year, we will budget for more acreage to treat as these insects are also tearing up our intermediates. We have been mowing our fairway clean ups with a triplex mower to eliminate some stress due to our large fairway mowers The insects will never be eliminated, however the more we can lessen the stress, the better the grass will be This also includes watering. I’m sure you’ve seen us poking around with moisture meters. We do this to try to keep the soil in the 28-30% range We have determined that this is our target to make it through the day It is softer than we would like and does get a little too wet in some spots That’s what makes it challenging when you have numerous “hot spots” around areas that don’t need the water. We’re doing our best with standing by sprinklers and controlling flow, as well as pulling hoses If it dries out too much, I’m sure many have noticed the carts will “track”

As we head into the fall, we have greens aerification scheduled for September 5-6th, bulk fertilization the 11th,

seeding and sodding to follow. Please remember the course is off limits to walkers and personal carts. We have had multiple carts on the course after hours and damage done to 15 green several times If you know your kids are taking the carts out, remind them of our rules and that they and you are responsible for any damage

As a continuing reminder please replace your divots If intact, step down and you’re done If not, replace what you can and sand the balance smoothed out with your foot Also please fix yours and one other ball mark

CLUB UPDATE FROM THE EQUESTRIAN CENTER

A NOTE FROM KRISTINA WRAY - THE EQUESTRIAN CENTER MANAGER

Bring on the cooler weather! The barn has had a fun and productive summer The barn staff and I have been busy with lessons, trail rides, horse camps, and ring rides Although summer camps have recently come to an end we are already starting on "winterizing" the barn. There is so much to do! Inventory, repairing fence lines, cleaning, reorganizing, bush-hogging, inspecting and repairing all tack and other equipment, stripping and re bedding of the stalls, and adding sawdust to the overhangs

All of the horses are due for their fall vaccines and wellness exams Each horse will receive a dental check up to make sure there are no dental abnormalities Bear, the barn cat, Russell the pig and Pearl (mini horse) will also receive their fall wellness exams.

We would like to give a shout out to Sebi and Darcy Bassiur for completing lessons over the summer and accomplishing their first trail ride. Both Sebi and Darcy have worked very hard learning the parts of the horse and tack along with learning the basics of riding. The Bassiur family has visited the equestrian center multiple

times this summer and has brought treats and guests down to ride and visit I would also like to send a big thank you to Sue Hegg and grandson, Liam who brought Gus a basketball Gus loves to chase or "herd" basketballs while he is at the barn During the summer, Gus's basketball was popped and Sue and Liam came to the rescue! Thank you again!

Towards the end of summer, we have welcomed 2 new boarders to the barn We would like to welcome "Splash and Henry" to the barn We would also like to welcome their owners as well We are so blessed to have these horses board with us Their owners are absolutely wonderful

Please join us in welcoming Victoria James to the barn Victoria, has been riding horses since she was very young and grew up trail riding, training and barrel racing horses We have had the pleasure of trail riding and showing horses with Victoria over the past years She is a hard worker, determined, and we admire her love and passion for all horses.

We would also like to wish Abby Waters the best as she travels back to college this fall Abby was a wonderful addition to our team this summer Her hard work and dedication didn't go unnoticed. We will all miss her and hope to have her back next summer!

As always the barn is open daily from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM Please call the barn a day in advance to schedule a ride or event The Equestrian Center offers: Ring rides, trail rides, lessons, boarding, summer horse camps, birthday parties, and private parties.
