I M P R ES S I O N S A MEMBER MAGAZINE
FROM THE DIRECTOR
This summer the McNay takes its commitment to excellence and innovation to the next level. Recently named by the readers of San Antonio Magazine as the “Best Museum in San Antonio,” the Museum’s Board and staff are truly committed to reaching and reflecting every member of our community across our 23-acre campus. (Throughout the summer, please stay tuned for exciting updates on improvements to our indoor AND outdoor museum experience.) Everyone should see themselves here because everyone is meant to be here—together—experiencing the joy, beauty, learning, and tranquility that has defined our Museum for 65 years. The McNay is indeed a very special place, and this summer we welcome home every San Antonian, because you have made our success possible. The season begins with the final weeks of American Dreams, the world’s first museum exhibition to pair classic American automobiles with postwar American paintings. Our Stieren Center for Exhibitions was transformed this spring to accommodate ten sculptures in steel—and on four wheels—as well as over twenty massive paintings, primarily from the McNay’s collection. We follow our celebration of postwar American culture with a tribute to the next era—the 60s, 70s, and 80s—and an iconic American artist who defined that era, Andy Warhol. The exhibition Andy Warhol: Portraits brings together over a hundred works from Warhol’s favorite genre, paired with American and European high fashion of the time. Warhol truly defined American high and pop culture, and his legacy is highlighted in the accompanying exhibition Transamerica/n: Gender, Identity, Appearance Today, the first U.S. presentation to focus on the spectrum of gender and its various outward appearances seen through the lens of contemporary artists. The exhibition is an opportunity for some members of our community to see themselves reflected on our walls for the first time. It is a wonderful opportunity for every member of our community to discover how others in San Antonio see and feel the world. The McNay is on track to becoming the most dynamic art museum in Texas, and soon the nation. Your support has taken us there. From all of us to all of you, thank you for 65 remarkable years of changing lives together across the Alamo City by bringing beauty in all forms to all people.
Yours most sincerely,
Richard Aste Director

Andy Warhol: Portraits features over 120 paintings, prints, photographs, and films that depict the artist’s favorite genre: the portrait. This exhibition presents a snapshot of New York’s art and social scene from the 1960s through the 1980s featuring portraits of Warhol’s friends and patrons, movie stars and musicians, and celebrities of the day. Personalities who populated Warhol’s inner circle are represented; some widely recognized names include Joan Collins, Debbie Harry, Dennis Hopper, Mick Jagger, Robert Rauschenberg, and Andy Warhol himself. The presentation takes a multi-dimensional approach to the work, exploring the formal, conceptual, social, and political implications of portraiture, identity, and fame. Andy Warhol: Portraits invites the viewer into Warhol’s world by examining the artist’s personal life, studio process, and use of a variety of mediums. Over a dozen fashion ensembles created by some of the designers pictured in the exhibition, as well as those worn by one of Warhol’s Texas art dealers, Shaindy Fenton, accompany the artworks on view. Garments by Halston, Yves Saint Laurent, Pucci, Mary McFadden, and more populate the gallery to illustrate the highly fashionable circle surrounding Warhol during this infamous period. Andy Warhol: Portraits is presented concurrently with Transamerica/n: Gender, Identity, Appearance Today, a broad survey of works in all media by artists who explore gender identity as manifest in appearance, presentation, and perception.
Andy Warhol: Portraits is organized by the McNay Art Museum from the collection of The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Curator-in-charge at the McNay Art Museum is René Paul Barilleaux, Head of Curatorial Affairs. Support is provided by the Host Committee, chaired by Rick Liberto. As of April 3, 2019.

Transamerica/n Gender, Identity, Appearance Today The McNay would like to give special thanks to the exhibition’s Lead Sponsor, the Ford Foundation, for a grant of $200,000. Across eight decades, the Foundation’s mission has been to reduce poverty and injustice, strengthen democratic values, promote international cooperation, and advance human achievement. We are grateful for the support of an organization that invests in innovative ideas, visionary individuals, and frontline institutions advancing human dignity around the world.
Transamerica/n: Gender, Identity, Appearance Today is the country’s first broad survey of artwork from across North America to explore gender identity as manifest in outward appearance. Transformative, transcendent, and trans-historical, Transamerica/n breaks down conventional boundaries and celebrates a spectrum of gender identity through individual presentation and societal perception. Transamerica/n showcases artists from underrepresented backgrounds in the United States, Mexico, and Canada who are deeply committed to exploring shifting definitions of gender identity and bravely testing the limits of self-expression. The exhibition also commemorates the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Riots, which served as a catalyst for the modern LGBTQ+ movement in the U.S. and around the world. Presented in tandem with Andy Warhol: Portraits, Transamerica/n focuses on generational shifts from the 1970s to today, with content spanning fine art, popular culture, and commercial culture. The exhibition includes a diverse range of artists—many from the San Antonio community— working across mediums. Included in the exhibition are photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe and Catherine Opie, figurative sculptures by Greer Lankton and Frank Benson, and installations by Xavier Schipani and Jacolby Satterwhite. Eschewing chronology in favor of thematic explorations, Transamerica/n focuses on narratives both personal and shared.
The McNay is proud to announce a major $175,000 grant from the Henry Luce Foundation for Transamerica/n: Gender, Identity Appearance Today. Each year, the Henry Luce Foundation’s American Art Program supports exhibitions that are anticipated to make significant contributions to the public and scholarly understanding and experience of the United States. Chosen from a highly competitive pool of applicants, the McNay is one of 14 museums across the country to receive funding from this year’s competition.

The exhibition is organized by the McNay Art Museum curated by René Paul Barilleaux, Head of Curatorial Affairs; Jackie Edwards, Assistant Curator; Bianca Alvarez, 2017-2018 Semmes Foundation Intern in Museum Studies; and Lauren Thompson, 2018-2019 Semmes Foundation Intern in Museum Studies. Lead funding is most generously provided by the Ford Foundation. Major funding is provided by the Henry Luce Foundation, Inc. Additional support is provided by the Host Committee, chaired by Dr. Carlos E. Alvarez-Meraz. As of April 3, 2019.

Commissioned works by emerging Latinx artists are a particular focus in Transamerica/n, reflecting San Antonio’s Hispanic majority and our close proximity to the US-Mexico border. Through the artworks and programs presented, Transamerica/n seeks to establish the Museum as a safe community center where all visitors can be their authentic selves, be inspired to dream and grow, make sense of the world, and find their special place in it. Transamerica/n is an open dialogue that raises awareness about relevant topics, presents new ways of experiencing art, and cultivates belonging within our community. Enjoy a live performance from Jose Villalobos during the Members Preview Reception.

CLOSE AT HAND: CONTEMPORARY STILL LIFE
Over the centuries, artists have answered the question of what to paint or draw by creating still life compositions. There is a good reason for this: still life objects do not move, and they are often close at hand in an artist’s studio. This exhibition focuses on contemporary still life prints from the McNay’s collection. One of the highlights is a recently acquired series of working proofs for Katje Oxman’s Evening Softly Lit.
Lead funding is most generously provided by the Elizabeth Huth Coates Exhibition Endowment and the Arthur and Jane Stieren Fund for Exhibitions.

WE’RE STILL HERE: NATIVE AMERICAN ARTISTS, THEN AND NOW
One of the rarely seen highlights of the McNay’s collection is a group of more than 70 drawings by members of the Kiowa tribe. The earliest of these—dating to the 1880s—are by Silver Horn, perhaps the most famous of all the Kiowa artists. His works chronicle Kiowa life and culture on the plains. Complementing these drawings will be an installation by San Antonio artist Joe Harjo which will focus on the contemporary Native American experience. Lead funding is most generously provided by the Elizabeth Huth Coates Exhibition Endowment and the Arthur and Jane Stieren Fund for Exhibitions.

EXAMINING TRANS IDENTITIES AND GENDER FLUIDITY IN THE ARCHIVES In conjunction with Transamerica/n: Gender, Identity, Appearance Today, the McNay is partnering with University of Texas San Antonio Special Collections to showcase the history of LGBTQ+ communities in San Antonio and South Texas. UTSA Special Collections sustains the University's teaching, research, and outreach mission by acquiring, preserving, and digitizing primary resources with significance to our region. This tandem exhibition is organized by Melissa Gohlke, Assistant Archivist, and Katie Rojas, Manuscripts Archivist for UTSA Libraries.
San Antonio-native Aaron Curry’s diverse body of artworks ranges from large abstract paintings and dynamic wall coverings, to hanging sculptures and monumental outdoor works. Characterized by a profusion of exuberant colors and shapes, Curry’s art incorporates a variety of motifs from Surrealism and modernism to Pre-Columbian art. Based in Los Angeles, Aaron Curry is the ninth artist to present work in the McNay’s AT&T Lobby. 11

DOUGLASS FOUNDATION’S GIFT OF PAINTINGS
GEORGE TOBOLOWSKY’S SEA OF GALILEE MENORAH
The Douglass Foundation’s generous 2018 gift of paintings by masters John Singer Sargent, William Merritt Chase, and Frederick Carl Frieseke immediately transforms the McNay’s holdings of American painting from the late 1800s-early 1900s. The first paintings by each of these artists to enter the Museum’s collection, these sensitive and personal portraits of family and friends by Chase and Sargent are significant additions to The Face of Modernism installation in the Zoch Gallery. The Frieseke landscape provides an American-influenced counterpoint to Cézanne’s Houses on the Hill in the Lang Galleries.
To further enhance the collection of outdoor artworks, the McNay recently acquired Dallas-based sculptor George Tobolowsky’s monumental menorah. Tobolowsky is widely known for his steel and stainless steel sculptures created from found objects, discarded machine and industrial parts, and scrap metal. Unlike the Hanukkah menorah with nine candle holders, this menorah has seven branches and is one of the oldest symbols in Judaism.

TRIBUTES
In 1964, a group of eight Junior League volunteers led by Marcia Gygli King and Peggy Pitman Mays offered tours of the McNay for student groups. Fifty years and thousands of tours later, the Docent Council has over a hundred members and continues to provide opportunities for the public—particularly school groups—to enjoy and find meaning in works of art. The McNay would like to pay tribute to the inspiring efforts made by two docents. We honor their legacy by continuing to bring inspiring educational programming enriched by the docent program.
