FROM THE DIRECTOR
This spring, beauty is in bloom across the McNay’s growing 25-acre campus, indoors and out. From three new outdoor sculptures to a peek inside the beautiful mind of theatre arts visionary Robert L. B. Tobin, we are redefining the art museum experience and bringing your stories to life through video art, rare Goya prints, fashion, community partnerships, and more. We kick off the year in style with a timely tribute to the 1990s in Fashion Nirvana: Runway to Everyday, an immersive installation of video art and garments, all from the influential decade. Recently, the world honored the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, which ushered in a new era of hope, freedom, opportunity, and individuality. In response, the 90s became a golden age of culture across the US, defined by innovative video, music, and the fashion of Gianni Versace, Isaac Mizrahi, and Vera Wang. Co-organized with the Texas Fashion Collection at the University of North Texas, Fashion Nirvana brings us back to an iconic time in our recent history and pushes the artistic boundaries of the museum experience along the way. McNay reinvention continues beyond our walls and onto our sprawling outdoor galleries as progress is made on Phase I of our transformative Landscape Master Plan. As we realize the vision of a more open and accessible modern art museum, we create even more opportunities to engage our community through a growing world-renowned collection. As a treasured member of the McNay family, you have supported our continued commitment to innovation, inclusion, and accessibility as we redefine beauty for all South Texans. Thanks to you, more and more San Antonians see themselves and their stories here. Yours most sincerely,
Richard Aste Director
OUR MISSION

rom gowns to grunge, Fashion Nirvana: Runway to Everyday marks the first large-scale fashion and video art exhibition in McNay history. Set between the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and September 11, 2001, the innovative installation celebrates designers, models, celebrities, photographers, and video artists who made the 90s an iconic decade. Fashion Nirvana features over 50 runway to everyday garments by famous designers Christian Dior, Tom Ford, Jean Paul Gaultier, Carolina Herrera, Patrick Kelly, Isaac Mizrahi, Todd Oldham, Oscar de la Renta, Vivienne Tam, Gianni Versace, Vera Wang, and more. Advances in technology made video art increasingly accessible during the 1990s, and video artists responded to music, pop culture, advertising, and fashion of the time. Paired alongside fashion ensembles, projections by video artists Seoungho Cho, Rineke Dijkstra, Anthony Discenza, Kristin Lucas, Tony Oursler (in collaboration with 90s band Sonic Youth), Mary Perillo, Pipilotti Rist, and John Sanborn, create a multi-sensory experience. Fashion Nirvana: Runway to Everyday is co-organized by the McNay Art Museum and Texas Fashion Collection at the University of North Texas, curated by Kate Carey, Head of Education; Jackie Edwards, former Assistant Curator; and Lauren Thompson, Assistant Curator; and assisted by Alexis T. Meldrum, 2019-2020 Semmes Foundation Intern in Museum Studies. Major support is provided by Mercedes T. Bass, Mercedes T. Bass Charitable Corporation. Additional support is provided by Neiman Marcus and the Host Committee, chaired by Alice Carrington Foultz.

GOYA’S CAPRICHOS AND THE HUMAN CONDITION Francisco Goya was a great Spanish painter and printmaker known as the last of the old masters and the first of the moderns. In his famous Los Caprichos series of prints, Goya critiques society and pokes fun at the weaknesses of the human character. Included in the exhibition are four very rare working proofs for the Caprichos, offering an opportunity to see different quality impressions from the same suite in one gallery space.

Selena Forever/Siempre Selena is organized by the McNay Art Museum, curated by Kate Carey, Head of Education. K-12 ARTISTS SPOTLIGHT SUE FULLER The McNay is excited to announce the featured 2019–20 Spotlight artwork, String Composition #W-253 by Sue Fuller. The growing Spotlight program invites students to learn about the artist, study the artwork, and ultimately make something new inspired by this site-specific sculpture. A masterpiece of art and engineering, the artwork contains 400 pins, 1,000 screws, and 2,000 feet of nautical cord. String Composition #W253 was commissioned by the McNay for the Tobin Theatre Arts Gallery where it has been on view since 1984. Student responses to the 2018–19 Spotlight program focusing on Diego Rivera’s Delfina Flores remain on view in the Patio Gallery through May 10, 2020. Learn more at mcnayart.org/spotlight. Major support of Spotlight is provided by Rackspace, Semmes Foundation, Inc., and Texas Commission on the Arts. As of 11.18.19

NEW OUTDOOR SCULPTURE This spring the McNay welcomes three new outdoor sculptures to the grounds by artists Willie Cole, Alejandro Martín, and Tom Wesselmann. Willie Cole’s upbringing by both his mother and grandmother had a lasting impact on his work and can be seen through his continued use of shoes, hairdryers, and irons in his sculptures. The Sole Sitter combines the forms of several large highheeled shoes to create a sitting figure reminiscent of traditional masks of the Luba people, a large Bantu-speaking group from Central Africa. Museum purchase with funds from the Russell Hill Rogers Fund for the Arts.
Alejandro Martín is an emerging artist currently living and working in Mexico City. Martín’s metal sculptures are informed by digital symbols of his generation. Bold, larger-than-life hashtags feature prominently in his artworks alongside asterisks and block figures that seem to emerge from a Minecraft© game. Museum purchase with funds from Carolyn and Allan Paterson.
Tom Wesselmann was one of the leading American Pop artists of the 1960s. Wesselmann explored classical representations of the nude, still life, and landscape while incorporating everyday objects and images from advertising. About his artwork, Wesselmann stated, “The prime mission of my art, in the beginning, and continuing still, is to make figurative art as exciting as abstract art.” Museum purchase with funds from Marie and Hugh Halff.

VIEW & VOTE ACQUISITION At the 17th annual View & Vote acquisition event, the McNay Contemporary Collectors Forum (MCCF) selected two works of video art to purchase for the Museum’s collection, one by Jennifer Steinkamp and another by Martine Gutierrez. Steinkamp’s Botanic 3 (2015) features computer generated flowers blown by an unseen force. As the plants drift across the screen and collide with one another, they burst into seeds, twigs, leaves, and petals. The animations loop forward and back—transitioning between breaking apart and coming back together—eliminating any notion of narrative and mesmerizing viewers. In Clubbing (2012), Gutierrez dances on screen as multiple characters, both male and female, to playfully explore self-transformation and subvert gender tropes. Gutierrez’s videos combine influences from fashion photography, music videos, and classic film as ways of exploring the construction of gender and self, playing between fantasy and reality. AARON CURRY: HEADROOM San Antonio-native Aaron Curry attended Churchill High School and grew up visiting the McNay Art Museum. For over a decade, he has lived and worked in Los Angeles. As Curry’s first-ever exhibition in his place of birth, HEADROOM is a homecoming for the artist. This exhibition consists of newly created surface coverings, a painting, and two sculptures selected specifically for the AT&T Lobby. The repeated design is both a reference to the early days of image digitization as seen in video games and through copy machines, and a nod to modern art and science fiction that influence Curry’s artwork. Trained as a painter, Curry says he became interested in sculpture by the idea “of trying to pull something out into the real world.” HEADROOM is organized for the McNay Art Museum by René Paul Barilleaux, Head of Curatorial Affairs. Lead funding is generously provided by the Elizabeth Huth Coates Exhibition Endowment and the Ewing Halsell Foundation.
