Our vision is to become San Antonio’s place of beauty and belonging. This season, the McNay brings that vision to life through exhibitions and programs grounded in a sense of place—your place—where we are all at home. In September, the Museum defines place as Texas and proudly joins four mighty arts organizations as hosts of the 2021 Texas Biennial. Together with Artpace San Antonio, FotoFest, Ruby City, and the San Antonio Museum of Art, we showcase emerging and established artists with strong ties to our great state. In October, the McNay defines place as San Antonio and celebrates the food culture that earned us the UNESCO recognition as a Creative City of Gastronomy in 2017. Presented in the Pat and Tom Frost Octagon, The Art of SA Eats illustrates vibrant local cuisine that always tastes like home. We pair this delicious presentation with our major fall exhibition in the Jane & Arthur Stieren Center for Exhibitions, Wayne Thiebaud 100: Paintings, Prints, and Drawings. Here, we broaden the definition of place to include the U.S. and focus on the everyday things that signal American culture: pie counters, ice cream parlor windows, rolling hills and valleys, and the dizzying streets of our urban centers. Through 100 paintings, prints, and drawings spanning an extraordinarily prolific career, centenarian California pop artist Thiebaud reminds us that beauty is everywhere. We just need to slow down and look. And we round out our fall season with The Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts exhibition Street Scene: Cities on Stage, which celebrates the beauty of built environments represented in our renowned Collection. This season, we also return to in-person programming. On November 7, we will proudly host a community-wide celebration commemorating the completion of the Museum’s landscape transformation. And at the dawn of a new year, we bring back our annual, in-person gala on January 20 with an exclusive preview of our first major loan exhibition of 2022. With a laser focus on a sense of place in a shifting, modern world, Georgia O’Keeffe and American Modernism (January 21–May 8, 2022) will celebrate the art of America’s modern era through the eyes of one of its greatest artists.

LANDSCAPE MASTER PLAN COMMUNITY CELEBRATION Sunday, November 7 1–5:30 PM The McNay is proud to celebrate the completion of Phase I of its highly anticipated Landscape Master Plan with the entire community on Sunday, November 7. This major transformation enhances the McNay’s outdoor experience with new sculpture, reimagined fencing, artful landscaping, walking paths, and increased ADA accessibility. Large hedges along the edge of the property were replaced with innovative fencing and native drought-resistant plantings, creating a more open view from the street. The Austin Highway and North New Braunfels entrances were reconstructed to include new entry and exit gates, plantings, walkways, additional lighting, and wider roads. The Austin Highway entrance has been named the Russell Hill Rogers Sculpture Gateway in honor of the generous support from the Russell Hill Rogers Fund for the Arts. The North New Braunfels entrance now welcomes visitors along Tom Frost Way, honoring the McNay’s beloved late board president and visionary champion of a new outdoor museum experience. Two acres of greenspace were also absorbed into the campus and named the Mays Family Park in honor of the generous $2 million lead gift from the Mays Family Foundation. The Park now features the Museum’s monumental masterpiece, Ascent, by Alexander Liberman, offering a dynamic art-viewing experience from the street at every angle.

October 28, 2021–January 16, 2022 Tobin Exhibition Galleries Steeped in memories both personal and cultural, the art of Wayne Thiebaud is comfortingly familiar and evokes reflection on our own experiences with the people, places, and foods we love. Thiebaud is best known for his tantalizing paintings of desserts and has long been associated with the Pop Art movement. Wayne Thiebaud 100: Paintings, Prints, and Drawings celebrates the artist’s 100th birthday through 100 works representing the artist’s achievements in all media through an array of subjects. Wayne Thiebaud 100: Paintings, Prints, and Drawings is organized at the McNay Art Museum by René Paul Barilleaux, Head of Curatorial Affairs; and Lauren Thompson, Assistant Curator. Lead sponsorship is most generously provided by The Brown Foundation. Major funding provided by the Arthur & Jane Stieren Fund for Exhibitions and the Elizabeth Huth Coates Charitable Foundation of 1992. The artist was born in Mesa, Arizona and grew up in Long Beach, California. One of his first jobs was at Mile High and Red Hot, a café known for its stacked ice-cream cones and hot dogs. At 16, Thiebaud broke his back playing sports, which led him to explore creative pursuits and become involved in high school theatrical productions. Thiebaud joined the United States Army Air Forces in 1940. In 1994, he received the National Medal of Arts, the highest award given to an artist by the U.S. government. Thiebaud personally requested the McNay Art Museum as a venue for this exhibition, Wayne Thiebaud 100: Paintings, Prints, and Drawings. On November 15, 2020, Thiebaud celebrated his 100th birthday. THE ART OF SA EATS/ SABOR A SAN ANTONIO

Cooling down on a scorching day with a frozen paleta, or warming up in the booth of a cozy neighborhood diner are among the many shared experiences evoked in The Art of SA Eats. Here, five San Antonio artists explore the city’s culinary landscape through paintings, photographs, sculpture, and video. This exhibition creates moments of appreciation and discovery of San Antonio favorites—from burgers and menudo to pecan pralines and paletas. The Art of SA Eats / Sabor a San Antonio is organized for the McNay Art Museum by Edward Hayes, Exhibitions Senior Manager / Registrar; and Isabel Servantez, 2020-2021 Semmes Foundation Intern in Museum Studies.

Q&A WITH ARTIST EVA MARENGO SANCHEZ Q: Why do you choose fruit cups and conchas as the subjects of your paintings? A: I think pan dulce and fruit cups strike the same cord as Thiebaud’s bakery, ice cream, and snow cone paintings. They are an emotional portal to happy memories of sharing something sweet with people we love.

Q: How do you feel about food connecting people to a sense of home, memory, and/or comfort? A: The things we see/interact with every day form culture and create our sense of taste, identity, what comforts us, and makes us feel safe. I think food is particularly powerful in that way because we share meals with people we’re close with so our memories of food are tied to really personal and intimate relationships.

BETH VAN HOESEN AND WAYNE THIEBAUD FRIENDSHIP AND COMMUNITY

Beth van Hoesen and fellow artist Wayne Thiebaud were close friends. The two often shared studio space, and the expense of hiring a model, in the converted firehouse where van Hoesen lived with her husband, the artist Mark Adams. Both artists excelled at still life drawing and printmaking and one can see where their interests overlapped in van Hoesen’s Candy and Thiebaud’s Slice of Pie. Both artists also shared a belief that drawing from a live model was absolutely essential to the artist’s process. Van Hoesen would often find prospective models on the streets near her San Francisco home. She immortalized two of these models, Traci and Steve, in her masterful and colorful etching and aquatints. SPOTLIGHT AT 10 K–12 ARTISTS EMBRACE THE McNAY

September 16, 2021–May 8, 2022 Patio Gallery

Since 2011, artworks by Leonardo Drew, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Diego Rivera from the McNay’s Collection have inspired San Antonio K–12 students. Looking closely together and learning about the artist, young learners make connections with their own lives and create art with powerful and personal messages. In 2020, students took a cue from the fearless experimentation of Sue Fuller and sculpted from found materials during the Stay-at-Home order. Students and teachers cited the healing power of creativity in difficult times. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of Spotlight, student projects and documentation from the entire history of the program are on view in the Patio Gallery. “Spotlight projects from the past 10 years have been proudly displayed at schools and in students’ homes,” said Rosemary Hickman, Semmes Foundation Education Manager and coordinator of the Spotlight program. “We’re excited to share these inspiring examples of student creativity with the community as we commemorate a decade of youth creativity in San Antonio.” During the 2021–2022 school year, student artists prepare new work inspired by The Sole Sitter by Willie Cole on view in the newly improved Museum grounds.

2021 TEXAS BIENNIAL: A NEW LANDSCAPE, A POSSIBLE HORIZON Frost Galleries and Lawson Print Gallery

WHAT: 2021 Texas Biennial: A New Landscape, A Possible Horizon, co-curated by Ryan N. Dennis and Evan Garza, Curators and Artistic Directors, with the support of Rigoberto Luna, Curatorial Assistant and Exhibitions Coordinator. WHEN: September 1, 2021 through January 9, 2022 WHO: In addition to artists living and working in Texas, the Biennial curators have broadened the scope of the project to include “Texpats,”—Texas natives and artists with deep connections to the Lone Star State working in any part of the world. In another first, the 2021 Texas Biennial features international artists for whom Texas and its history are subject matter.

WHY: To be a significant part of the seventh iteration of the Texas Biennial, which, for the first time in its history, is distributed across venues in San Antonio and Houston, featuring exhibitions, programs, and works of public art. MORE: A highlight of the McNay’s presentation is the premiere of Donald Moffett’s Lot 052021 (the air we breathe). New York-based Moffett is currently organizing an exhibition project for the McNay, scheduled to open in March 2022. Created in collaboration with the McNay’s Head of Curatorial Affairs, René Paul Barilleaux, the exhibition comingles Moffett’s artworks with selections from the McNay Collection and the artist’s personal collection. Donald Moffett | Nature Cult | The McNay will be the artist’s first major presentation in his native San Antonio. The 2021 Texas Biennial: A New Landscape, A Possible Horizon is co-curated by Ryan N. Steve Parker Sounds: Sanctus November 7, 8, 9, & 10 | 5:30–6:30 PM

Texas Biennial artist Steve Parker invites visitors to activate a serene sound sculpture on the McNay grounds. The copper sculpture plays four liturgical psalms written by Hildegard von Bingen, a 12th century abbess and polymath whose work explored the healing potential of sound. Lawn chairs, blankets, chill vibes welcome, all ages.

From its city streets to Texas hill country roads, San Antonio is a kaleidoscope of landscapes. Street Scene: Cities on Stage transports visitors to a number of destinations via stage designs from the Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts and artworks from the McNay’s Permanent Collection. The exhibition shows how theatre designers create realistic and fanciful stage settings that challenge and stretch our understanding of urban environments forged from steel, glass, bricks, and mortar. The artworks also offer artistic interpretations of small-town life. Some designs are imaginative, colorful, exciting, and surreal, while others depict more familiar visions of sleepy farm towns. Street Scene: Cities on Stage explores the variety of city, neighborhood, and rural streets seen on theatre stages. ARTISTS LOOKING AT ART: LYLE W. WILLIAMS

July 7, 2021–January 23, 2022 Adjacent to Zoch Gallery

Lyle W. Williams paints things that are close at hand and have personal meaning. Williams is an art historian and the McNay’s Curator of Prints and Drawings, Curator of Modern Art. His paintings are presented through the McNay Art Museum’s Artists Looking at Art (ALA) series, which salutes the vitality of the contemporary art community in the San Antonio area. Q: What got you started as an artist? A: I took painting classes with my friend Vincent Valdez at the Guadalupe [Cultural Arts Center] in 2012 and got hooked on painting with oils. Q: Does your curatorial practice influence your approach to art-making? A: Absolutely. My background as a curator tends to make me overthink decisions about what and how to paint. I find that I must get lost in the painting process rather than overthinking things. Q: Your paintings are in the The Face of Modernism gallery in the Museum, which contains portraits. Why did you decide to display your artwork there? A: These are symbolic portraits so they do have a connection to the objects in The Face of Modernism. Q: How do you choose the subjects of your paintings? A: I have long felt that objects held close by someone physically become imbued with the essence of that person.

MONET AND WHISTLER IN LONDON

August 18, 2021–January 23, 2022 Zilker Gallery

Claude Monet’s masterpiece Charing Cross Bridge, brouillard traveled from the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto to the McNay for this special exhibition. This painting shows one of the key bridges over the Thames River in London with the Houses of Parliament in the background. The Thames held a great fascination for Monet and many other artists, including the American expatriate artist, James Abbott McNeill Whistler. They were fascinated not only by the topography of the Thames but by the ever-changing light effects created by the moisture-laden atmosphere of the river valley. Monet depicts the Thames under a thick layer of fog which softens the sunlight into a diffused, golden haze. Similarly, Whistler showed the dewy air hanging over the river in his lithograph Early Morning. Accompanying the Monet and Whistler works are prints by James Jacques Tissot, John Marin, and contemporary New York artist Yvonne Jacquette. The McNay is thrilled to welcome AIM Partners in Education to the McNay Business Member family. We sat down with AIM’s Karla Kimmel, Director of Marketing, to get to know the organization.

Q: Tell us about AIM Partners in Education. A: AIM is celebrating 10 years in education this year! Our company was founded to provide educational support to students with disabilities. We pride ourselves on our service to these students, their families, and the schools that use our services. What started in San Antonio in 2011, has now expanded to service Austin, Houston, Dallas, El Paso, and the Rio Grande Valley.  Q: Why has your organization chosen to become Business Members at the McNay? A: Art in education has proven to build self-esteem, confidence, and even foster therapeutic benefits in students. Art helps children with special needs work through issues that trouble their development, like physical, emotional, mental, and behavioral conditions. AIM is excited to be partners with a museum that shares this love of art and education, while providing continuing education for teachers, student tours, and teacher resources that allow teachers to incorporate art in the classroom.  Q: What are some of the benefits of being a Business Member that you value most? A: The McNay Art Museum has some of the most spectacular artworks in Texas! The exhibitions are fresh and relevant to our current social climate, and the collection of classical and contemporary artists is mesmerizing. We are also looking forward to hosting a work event in the auditorium this summer and exploring the museum and grounds as a group.

Q: What do the arts mean to you and your staff? A: Art can make you feel and make you think. Art can be a shared group experience but is completely unique to the individual. Much like experiencing art, we work collectively to help the student, but recognize that each experience is unique to the individual.
