FROM THE DIRECTOR
This fall, the McNay takes San Antonians across the Atlantic Ocean and back as we celebrate over a hundred years of art from Paris, New York City, Mexico City, and of course, San Antonio. We begin in the late 1800s with the City of Lights and a spellbinding selection of glittering cityscapes in Paris: NotreDame and Beyond. Our founder, Marion Koogler McNay, also fell under the spell of the art of the French capital. As a woman artist who championed fellow women artists of her day, she included the proudly American expatriate in Paris, Mary Cassatt, in her then private collection. Mary Cassatt’s Women features an early purchase by our founder as well as an iconic Cassatt painting from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. We turn the century in both Paris and New York with an ambitious celebration of one of our great strengths, the Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts. Picasso to Hockney: Modern Art on Stage marks the first moment that this internationally renowned collection is showcased in the Jane and Arthur Stieren Center for Exhibitions since the opening of the 7,000 square foot galleries in 2008. We advance through the 20th century into the 60s, 70s, and 80s, traveling to Marfa, Texas with a celebration of Minimalist and Conceptual works on paper in What You See is What You See. To conclude our international travels and arrive at the present day, we cross the U.S.-Mexico border in La Revolución Mexicana: 100 Years Later, a presentation honoring the vision of Mexico’s brilliant contemporary printmaker, Artemio Rodriguez. The McNay welcomes you home, and we are excited to share news about your favorite San Antonio museum and the future of its sprawling, 23-acre campus. By next spring, we will have taken our commitment to engaging everyone to new heights with the completion of Phase I of the McNay’s Landscape Master Plan, which will focus on opening up and activating the campus through a barrier-free McNay experience. You cannot be what you cannot see, and at the McNay, we want everyone to see our commitment to mirroring our community in our galleries and across our grounds. San Antonio’s greatest strength is its diverse community— diverse in age, background, culture, identity, and passion. In 2020, we look forward to engaging all our city, indoors and out, right here at the first modern art museum in Texas.
Yours most sincerely,
Richard Aste Director

What Lisa loves the most about working at the McNay is the opportunity to see works by Picasso and Monet whenever she wants! She looks forward to being a part of the Museum’s increasingly innovative direction for many years to come, and to helping facilitate the growth of McNay staff through a deep commitment to staff development. Here’s to the next 30, Lisa!

MODERN ART ON STAGE Picasso to Hockney: Modern Art on Stage features more than 100 objects from the renowned Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts. One of the McNay’s great strengths, this collection is an unparalleled treasure trove of scenic and costume designs amassed by Robert L. B. Tobin, the late San Antonio visionary who recognized and championed theatre arts as fine art. Performance design has increasingly become an essential part of contemporary artists’ creative practice. Modern artists including Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Fernand Léger, Natalia Gontcharova, Joan Miró, Robert Indiana, Louise Nevelson, Robert Wilson, and David Hockney collaborated for the stage with the exciting and thought-provoking writers, musicians, and dancers of their day. In the 1970s and 80s, American painters and sculptors influenced by performance art positioned the U.S. at the global forefront of innovative theatre design. Dynamic directors and cutting-edge opera companies defined this era by inviting contemporary artists to design sets for new and classic works. Modern masters Jim Dine, Robert Indiana, and David Hockney created Pop-inspired stage productions. More recently, Robert Wilson and Lesley Dill merged drawing, sculpture, music, language, and movement into live performances they designed, conceived, and directed. As museums redefine their role in the world and cultivate new audiences, Picasso to Hockney engages the spectrum of art, music, dance, and theatre lovers by exploring how fine artists designing for performance challenged conventional theatre design, and often redefined their own work in the process. In 2020, the exhibition will travel to the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, Florida, and then to the Dayton Art Institute, Ohio.
Picasso to Hockney: Modern Art on Stage is organized for the McNay Art Museum by R. Scott Blackshire, Curator, Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts; Timothy James Retzloff, Tobin Theatre Arts Fund Assistant Curator, Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts; and Jody Blake, Former Curator, Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts. Lead funding is most generously provided by the Brown Foundation, Inc. Major funding is provided by The Tobin Theatre Arts Fund. Additional support is provided by Frost Bank Charitable Foundation and the Host Committee, chaired by Alice and Sergio Viroslav.

WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU SEE The McNay began collecting Minimalist and Conceptual prints in the late 1990s with the purchase of a suite of four woodcuts by Donald Judd, whose artistic vision made Marfa, Texas an international art mecca. While that was an auspicious beginning, the young collection did not have enough works to create an exhibition representing one of America’s greatest contributions to world art. In 2002, however, the Austin collector John M. Parker, Jr. lent the McNay a group of about ten key works that made our first exhibition of this important material possible. Since then, the McNay has continued to collect in this area, and in 2017, Mr. Parker gifted his entire collection to the McNay. This exhibition is the public’s first opportunity to see the McNay’s collection merged with that of Mr. Parker, positioning this as one of the largest and most important collections of Minimalist and Conceptual graphics in the state and region. Many of the works in this exhibition will be on view for the first time at the McNay. What You See is What You See is organized for the McNay Art Museum by Lyle W. Williams, Curator of Prints and Drawings. Lead funding is generously provided by Elizabeth Huth Coates Exhibition Endowment and the Arthur and Jane Stieren Fund for Exhibitions. Additional funding is provided by the Louis A. and Frances B. Wagner Lecture Series and the William Randall Hearst Endowed Fund for Education Programs.

LA REVOLUCIÓN MEXICANA 100 YEARS LATER In 2010, one of the greatest living Mexican printmakers, Artemio Rodriguez, created a portfolio of linoleum block prints to mark the 100th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution. These brilliantly contrasting black and white prints include portraits of prominent figures on both sides of the struggle. The artist’s portrait of dictator Porfirio Díaz and the Eurocentric nature of his rule strikingly contrasts with the portrait of the great revolutionary leader Emiliano Zapata on horseback in rural Mexico with small farms and mountains in the background. Complementing Rodriguez’s portfolio are prints from the McNay’s extensive collection of portraits of Zapata. This group of portraits, including works by contemporary artists, are a testament to Zapatas enduring legacy in the social, political, and cultural life of Mexico. Some of the prints in this selection are new acquisitions on view for the first time ever. La Revolución Mexicana: 100 Years Later is organized for the McNay Art Museum by Lyle W.

PARIS: NOTRE-DAME AND BEYOND The recent fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral served as a reminder of the special place Paris holds in the hearts and minds of people around the world. Even those who have not traveled to the City of Light know it as an iconic world center of culture, history, and art. This exhibition, drawn entirely from the McNay’s collection, celebrates Paris’s monuments and marvels. Highlights include eight large-scale color lithographs by Henri Rivière, offering a soaring view of Paris from the heights of Notre-Dame. Eugène Viollet-le-Duc’s beloved spire—which collapsed in the April fire—is hauntingly visible as it towers over the transept of the cathedral. Paris: Notre-Dame and Beyond is presented as a complement to the McNay’s installation, Mary Cassatt’s Women. While Cassatt’s art focused on an interior, domestic, and familial world, the works in Paris: Notre-Dame and Beyond feature cityscapes during the Belle Époque, the beautiful era in which Cassatt lived and worked in Paris. Paris: Notre-Dame and Beyond is organized for the McNay Art Museum by Lyle W.

PAINTING FOR PERFORMANCE
Organized as a companion exhibition to Picasso to Hockney: Modern Art on Stage, Painting for Performance presents an array of designs by five visual artists who ventured into the world of performance. This exhibition offers a unique opportunity to view rarely seen costumes and backdrops from productions created by Georges Rouault, Paul Jenkins, David Salle/Jeff Koons, and Terry Winters. Designs are complemented with paintings and prints from the same artists. Music, large-scale photographs, and production footage activate the space with the lush sound and myriad of vivid colors that once painted stages nationally and internationally. Among the productions featured are George Balanchine’s The Prodigal Son (1929), Paul Jenkins’s Shaman to the Prism Seen (1987), Karole Armitage’s Contempt (1989), Trisha Brown’s El Trilogy (2000/01), and Merce Cunningham’s Loose Time (2002).
Painting for Performance is organized for the McNay Art Museum by René Paul Barilleaux, Head of Curatorial Affairs, and Timothy James Retzloff, Tobin Theatre Arts Fund Assistant Curator, Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts. This exhibition is a program of The Tobin Theatre Arts Fund.

MARY CASSATT’S WOMEN
This fall, McNay visitors have a special opportunity to view Mary Cassatt’s Impressionist masterpiece The Cup of Tea in Mary Cassatt’s Women. Joined by the McNay’s own suite of Cassatt’s well-known and beloved aquatints and other works on paper, The Cup of Tea is on loan exclusively to the McNay from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Cassatt received critical acclaim for The Cup of Tea in the 1881 Impressionist exhibition in Paris. Mary Cassatt’s Women focuses on the artist’s images of the ordinary and often intimate moments from the daily lives of upper-middle-class women like herself as they care for children, ride the public omnibus, or enjoy the ritual of having tea. What makes Cassatt’s work compelling is how she elevates what could be dismissed as mundane subject matter through her masterful approach to color and composition. Don’t miss our Tea with Mary Cassatt event on November 13. See page 12 for details. Mary Cassatt, The Cup of Tea (detail), ca. 1880-81. Oil on canvas. CELEBRATING McNAY LIBRARIAN ANN JONES After 30 wonderful years at the McNay, our Librarian extraordinaire, Ann Jones, has retired. Ann joined the family in 1988 as a part-time assistant to the Curator of the Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts. She continued to broaden her experience as Assistant to the Head of Curatorial from 1989–92, and finally as the Museum’s Librarian. For the past 27 years, Ann has overseen San Antonio’s only research library devoted to Fine Arts and Theatre Arts. She also led the development of a new system to provide free, digital access to the Library’s collection, featuring over 60,000 books, periodicals, exhibition catalogues, and more. The McNay is grateful to Ann for her tremendous dedication to the first modern art museum in Texas, and we wish her the best in her next chapter.

LANDSCAPE MASTER PLAN The McNay Art Museum’s commitment to engaging a diverse community in the discovery and enjoyment of the visual arts is reaching new heights with the announcement of Phase I of its Landscape Master Plan. Spearheaded by Campaign Chair and Trustee Don Frost and Board of Trustees President Toby Calvert, this transformative plan will activate the outdoor Museum experience that has defined the McNay since day one. Existing hedges along the edge of the property will be replaced with aesthetic fencing and native drought-resistant plants, creating easier access to Marion Koogler McNay’s original 1929 residence. The $6.25 million project will transform the outward face of the McNay’s campus and remove the physical barrier for San Antonio’s community. Additional outdoor works of art, “invisible” fencing, landscaping, and increased accessibility will ensure everyone feels welcome and at home at the first modern art museum in Texas.
The greenspace triangle at the intersection of Austin Highway and North New Braunfels will be absorbed into the McNay campus. This area will be known as the Mays Family Park in honor of the generous $2 million lead gift from the Mays Family Foundation. The McNay is also grateful for additional major funding from the Kronkosky Charitable Foundation, the Frost Family, Frost Bank, and Semmes Foundation, Inc. in support of this important step in the physical manifestation of the Museum’s important mission. Thank you also to San Antonio-based architecture and construction firms Ford, Powell & Carson and G.W. Mitchell, and Austin-based urban landscape architects studio dwg. for their vision throughout. Phase I construction is slated for completion by Spring 2020 with Phase II in early development. The Museum will remain open throughout construction.
