From the Director This past year was one for the record books. In the spring we presented Something to Say, the first major survey of African American art organized by the McNay. We broke attendance records with our blockbuster summer exhibition Immersed: Local to Global Art Sensations. And last fall, with Duke University’s Nasher Museum of Art, we co-created Pop América, 1965–1975—the world’s first truly inclusive, Pan-American approach to Pop, and a fitting commemoration of San Antonio’s first world’s fair, HemisFair ’68, on its 50th anniversary. The year 2018 was also a profoundly meaningful one for every member of the Museum’s family. We said goodbye to our late Chairman, past President, and lifetime Trustee, Tom Frost, who helped shepherd the McNay and establish its rightful reputation as a citywide oasis of tranquility, beauty, innovation, and inclusion. Thanks to Mr. Frost, our community has come to expect all this and more from their McNay experience. Also thanks to him, the Museum is now a special place where our community can come together, fall under the spell of beauty and truth, and leave changed, even transformed. So in 2019 we will honor Mr. Frost’s brilliant legacy by leaning in to the culture of innovation and inclusion he worked tirelessly to build in San Antonio, right here at Texas’s first museum of modern art. In the year ahead, we will continue to think outside the box, expand our narratives, reach new audiences, and speak directly to the backgrounds, cultures, and interests of more San Antonians than ever before. This spring, we will rev up the year of innovation with American Dreams: Classic Cars and Postwar Paintings, the world’s first exhibition to boldly pair two magnificent examples of high American design. (Please don’t miss the very first glimpse of American Dreams at our annual gala on Friday, February 8, chaired by Rick and Suzanne Cavender and Don and Lou Celia Frost.) Art museums across the country are expanding traditional definitions of art and artistic excellence, and thanks to American Dreams, modern and contemporary art at the McNay will now include sculpture in steel—and on four wheels—as true reflections of innovation in postwar American design. As a direct result of this shift, we will proudly welcome many first-time visitors to our beloved institution. In 2019 we will also take inspiration from Mr. Frost’s commitment to inclusion by presenting Estampas Chicanas, a stunning exhibition of prints by Chicana artists who are too often overlooked. Later next summer, the McNay will host the country’s first celebration of contemporary American artists who bravely construct identity through gender and its many outward appearances. And throughout the year, we will take our late Chairman’s commitment to inclusion beyond our walls and across our campus, as we physically open up the McNay to every member of our community. Tom Frost was kind, strategic, and blessed with a remarkable sense of humor. His moral leadership was a constant source of strength and inspiration for everyone at the McNay. We will therefore honor his remarkable life by embracing his vision of innovation and his mission of inclusion for the Museum—to engage a diverse community in the discovery and enjoyment of the visual arts. Yours most sincerely, Toby Calvert, President of the Board of Trustees, and Richard Aste, Director

American Dreams
Classic Cars and Postwar Paintings
Organized by the McNay, American Dreams: Classic Cars and Postwar Paintings explores the ingenuity and innovation of postwar America. This period, known as America’s Golden Age, witnessed the explosion of Abstract Expressionism, Pop art, and Op art; the mass production of automobiles; and increased wealth and consumerism. The exhibition presents 10 classic cars as modern sculpture, alongside paintings from the McNay’s collection and select loans. Characterized by exaggerated tailfins, wraparound windshields, and generous chrome detail, these classics of the 1950s and 1960s were called dream cars. From a rare 1948 Tucker Torpedo—one of only 51 Tuckers ever made—to the beloved 1963 Chevrolet Corvette, a pinnacle of vintage ’Vette design, many of the cars on view pushed design boundaries through expansive volume, nontraditional color combinations, and highly styled flourishes. Additional highlights include a 1957 Pontiac Star Chief convertible with missile-shaped side trim, and a 1956 DeSoto Firedome sporting factory colors of pink and iridescent plum. Classics restored to factory-correct interiors and exteriors are joined by several restoration-modification (“resto-mod”) cars, most notably the Spurs Camaro restored and generously lent by Larry Mills, Executive Vice President, Holt Companies, San Antonio. Abstract paintings from the McNay’s collection include strong representation of women artists, including Judith Godwin, Grace Hartigan, Dorothy Hood, and Joan Mitchell, alongside their male contemporaries Sandu Darie, Friedel Dzubas, Hans Hofmann, Ralph Humphrey, George McNeil, Larry Rivers, Theodoros Stamos, and Frank Stella. Pop pictures by Robert Indiana, Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist, and Ed Ruscha—some on loan for the exhibition—illustrate the movement. Op paintings include a striking oil by Edna Andrade, a monumental work by Larry Poons, and a pulsating acrylic painting by Julian Stanczak. Together, these artworks represent key developments in American art just after World War II and through the 1970s. American Dreams: Classic Cars and Postwar Paintings is organized by René Paul Barilleaux, Head of Curatorial Affairs; Kate Carey, Head of Education; and Jackie Edwards, Assistant Curator. Funding to date is most generously provided by the Elizabeth Huth Coates Exhibition Endowment and the Arthur and Jane Stieren Fund for Exhibitions. Additional support is provided by the Director’s Circle and the Exhibition Host Committee, chaired by Linda and Larry Mills.

Estampas Chicanas One of the great myths about such important social developments as the Chicano labor movement is that they are progressive on all fronts. However, many Chicana women, especially Chicana artists, have been excluded. This exhibition focuses solely on Chicana artists, many of whom have had to fight to make their voices heard. The artworks in this exhibition, all generous gifts of Harriett and Ricardo Romo, include works by Judy Baca, Patssi Valdez, Barbara Carrasco, Ester Hernández, Alma López, and others. This exhibition is organized for the McNay Art Museum by Lyle Williams, Curator of Prints and Drawings. Lead funding is most generously provided by the Elizabeth Huth Coates Exhibition Endowment and the Arthur and Jane Stieren Fund for Exhibitions. Judy Baca, Absolutely Chicana, 2002. Screenprint. Van Gogh to Munch Seduction and Anxiety
The end of the 19th century gave rise in Europe to heightened anxiety about the future. This anxiety, coupled with greater exploration of sexuality and the human psyche, led to the creation of psychologically charged and complex art. Some artists, such as the Symbolist Charles-Marie Dulac, turned to Catholicism in their work to suggest a way forward; others, such as Paul Gauguin, sought deeper human truths in faraway cultures seemingly unspoiled by the progress of industrialization. This exhibition traces the development of art focused on the inner world of the human mind, from Vincent van Gogh’s penetrating portrait of his last medical doctor, Paul-Ferdinand Gachet, to a claustrophobic brothel interior by Edvard Munch. Vincent van Gogh, Portrait of Dr. Gachet (detail), 1890. Etching. Collection of the McNay Art Museum, Gift of the Friends of the McNay, 1980.19.

Jeanne and Irving Mathews Collection of Art Glass Jeanne and Irving Mathews, whose family owned Frost Brothers, a Texas high-fashion retail chain, began collecting Art Nouveau and Art Deco glass at Paris flea markets in the 1960s, on buying trips for the store. What began as a hobby soon turned into a passion for the couple. Over three decades of active collecting— beginning at a time when few people were interested in French art glass of the late 1800s–early 1900s—the Mathews developed one of the finest collections in the United States, along with a formidable library on the subject. Jeanne Lang Mathews stopped collecting glass on the death of her husband, in 1994. She bequeathed their collection of more than 150 examples of art glass to the McNay, where it complements paintings, theatre designs, and other works of that fin de siècle era. Now, for the first time, the Jeanne and Irving Mathews Collection of Art Glass is installed together in a gallery dedicated to the collection. The Jeanne and Irving Mathews Collection of Art Glass is on view in the Brown Sculpture Pavilion. This installation is organized for the McNay Art Museum by Heather Lammers, Collections Manager & Curator. Funding is most generously provided by the Jeanne Mathews Art Glass Fund. Additional support is provided by Harold J. Wood and John O’Brien.

Anastasia Pelias: mama New Orleans native Anastasia Pelias presents a monumental sculpture immersed in a painted landscape, the installation commissioned by the McNay for the Museum campus. Pelias’s artworks span painting, drawing, video, sculpture, and installation, and are united through a cultural identity that combines her birthplace, Louisiana, and her ancestral roots in Greece. Installed by the artist, mama is at once a temporal artwork, an homage to Pelias’s family history, and a site for quiet contemplation. Dario Robleto Acquisition On the occasion of Ancient Beacons Long for Notice, Dario Robleto’s recent, highly praised exhibition at the McNay, the Museum acquired Sundials, More Loyal to the Moon (2016). The first work by this San Antonio native to enter the collection, the artwork bridges many scientific disciplines, including astronomy, biology, cardiology, oceanography, paleontology, and psychology, to disciplines within the humanities. Over the past decade, Robleto’s unique combination of curiosity and empathy—and a firm belief that art can and should make a difference in the world—have led him in diverse, unorthodox directions. Similar to other sculptures by the artist, this one comprises a wide range of materials, including seashells, butterfly wings, paper, powder pigments, beads, and Plexiglas, all meticulously transformed by Robleto into a dazzling assemblage. The exhibition, seen by over 25,000 visitors, included two other works from this series. Dario Robleto, Sundials, More Loyal to the Moon, 2016. Various cut and polished seashells, urchin spines, white tusks, squilla claws, spirula shells, butterfly wings, cut paper, colored powder pigments, colored plastic beads and glitter, acrylic domes, print on paper, brass rod, colored and mirrored Plexiglas, glue, painted wood. Collection of the McNay Art Museum, Museum purchase with the Victor and Peggy Barton Creighton Charitable Trust, 2018.29.
View & Vote At the annual View & Vote acquisition event, the McNay Contemporary Collectors Forum (MCCF) selected two works to purchase for the Museum’s collection: Robert (2007), by James Gobel; and Dedicated to La Duquesa de Alba/Black Alba (2004), by Yasumasa Morimura. James Gobel begins his process with photographs and proceeds to make drawings in pencil and yarn, then composes a mosaic of felt pieces. When viewed from a distance, Robert, which references Giovanni Battista Moroni’s The Tailor (Il Tagliapanni) (1565–70), could easily be mistaken for an oil painting, but on close inspection reveals the warm, fuzzy texture of felt. Through extensive use of props, costumes, makeup, and digital manipulation, Yasumasa Morimura masterfully transforms himself into recognizable subjects, often from the Western cultural canon. In this artwork, a self-portrait, the artist draws reference from Francisco de Goya’s painting of María Cayetana de Silva, 13th Duchess of Alba. Both acquisitions premiere in the McNay’s summer 2019 exhibition Transamerica/n: Gender, Identity, Appearance Today.

Member Spotlight
Mary and Kurt Wagner—Members since 2015 IMPRESSIONS:
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
KURT:
Well, we’ve been married for 51 years now. And we’re both retired, and we’ve lived in various parts of the country, and we find San Antonio to be the nicest.
IMPRESSIONS:
How do you feel about the art in the McNay?
MARY:
It is wonderful. It’s surprising. You never know what you’re going to find around the corner. You think you’re going to see one thing, and there’s something else that says, “Look at me!” “Take a picture!” “Try it yourself!”
KURT:
I grew up in New York City, so I’m used to seeing artwork at the Guggenheim and the Museum of Modern Art. I would say that, on a smaller scale, the art you have here at the McNay is every bit as good.
IMPRESSIONS:
What would you tell someone who’s considering becoming a McNay Member?
KURT:
There are a lot of benefits, a lot of programs that we enjoy, and they are well worth coming to and seeing.
MARY:
Watch the calendar so you don’t miss anything. The ArtFULL Wednesdays are wonderful. We have art on the wall, framed, that we did on the ArtFULL Wednesdays.

Tributes Jonathan C. Calvert Jonathan C. Calvert, of San Antonio, Texas, Emeritus Trustee of the McNay, passed away peacefully at dawn on August 23, 2018, surrounded by his family. A man who missed few sunrises or sunsets, Jonathan was born April 25, 1930, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the third of four sons born to James Henry and Carolyn Rice Calvert. He attended the San Antonio Academy and Texas Military Institute, and graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy and Princeton University. A former Marine, he entered the investment business, and worked in New York City and Chicago before returning to Texas. He loved his community, and enjoyed serving on the Boards of the McNay Art Museum and Saint Mary’s Hall, and marching with the Texas Cavaliers. At the McNay, Jonathan served on various committees and chaired the Development Committee. An avid photographer, he beautifully documented his many global adventures over the course of his long life; a selection of his photographs of South America was recently on view in the McNay exhibition Picturing Latin America. Jonathan was indeed a self-described “adventurer”—after developing a passion for mountain climbing at the relatively late age of 37, he spent his last 50 years exploring remote corners of the world, and enthusiastically shared many of his favorite climbs and trips with his daughters, his grandchildren, and his beloved wife and equally fearless co-adventurer, Betty. A devoted family man, Jonathan also maintained a close friendship with his first wife, the longtime McNay supporter Margaret Corning Boldrick. Scholar, businessman, rancher, artist, and adventurer, Jonathan Calvert was defined by his fearlessness, his quiet humor, and his great strength of character, and he will be remembered for his generosity to the McNay. In his autobiography, The Urge to Know, Jonathan described himself as “a relatively ordinary man who lived an extraordinarily full life.” That account of his adventures will continue to inspire his family and friends to live life in the extraordinary way he did: deliberately, willfully, and with insatiable curiosity. “Do not be afraid to fail,” he wrote, “because if you are, you will be afraid to risk. And if you are afraid to risk, then you will miss out on some of life’s greatest experiences.”

Thomas “Tom” C. Frost Thomas “Tom” C. Frost, of San Antonio, Texas, Chairman and lifetime Trustee of the McNay, passed away on August 10, 2018, surrounded by his family. A civic, economic, educational, and spiritual force in South Texas throughout his long life, Tom was born to Thomas Clayborne Frost and Ilsé Herff Frost on October 29, 1927, in San Antonio. He attended the San Antonio Academy and Texas Military Institute, served in the US Army, and graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Washington and Lee University, in Virginia, with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce. He returned to Texas and began a career at his family’s bank, starting in the mailroom and moving up to the president’s office by age 34, to become the fourth generation of Frosts to lead Frost Bank. Tom married Patricia “Pat” Holden Frost, and together they welcomed into the world four sons, 13 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. A man of great faith, he served Christ Episcopal Church for over 80 years, in addition to leading development activities in the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas. Equal to Tom’s faith was his belief in the power of education to enrich and transform lives across our community. Tom joined the Board of Trustees of the McNay Art Museum in 1971, filling the vacancy left by his father. (Tom’s great-uncle Joseph H. Frost had been the first Frost to join the McNay Board, and was among the seven original Trustees named in Marion Koogler McNay’s will to establish the Marion Koogler McNay Art Institute. Tom’s son Don Frost today continues the family tradition of serving on the McNay Board.) From 1971, Tom served as the McNay’s Treasurer, Vice President, President, and ultimately Chairman, in that last role leading the Museum through what was then the most ambitious capital campaign for a San Antonio artsand-culture organization. “My father was proud of his family’s involvement with the McNay—the first modern-art museum in the State of Texas—and he always boasted that the McNay has been primarily funded by private resources since its inception,” said Don Frost. “Dad understood the importance of the discovery and enjoyment of the visual arts, and the Museum’s capacity to educate our diverse community. Thanks to his great efforts, the McNay has a strong foundation from which its Director and Board of Trustees can expand its influence and citywide outreach.” The McNay thrives today because of Tom Frost. We will honor his legacy here by bringing beauty, tranquility, and inspiration to each and every member of our community.
