Welcome

Some people think childhood wonder is a feeling you outgrow. But it’s right here waiting for you in River Country. A place where glowing waterways meander gently through tall gums and vast open plains; where nature lovers go to chase the rise and fall of the sun; and where the great night skies leave you wild and breathless.

Dip your toes into the mighty Murray River, sip locally-crafted wines and toast marshmallows by a campfire. Take the road less travelled and discover national parks, museums, cycling trails, walking tracks, golf courses, restaurants, and vineyards.

Explore all this glorious region has to offer on two feet, two wheels, two strokes or four hooves — there are no limitations.

You’ll find River Country just over three hours from Wagga Wagga, 2.5 hours from Melbourne, and centred around the thriving border towns of Echuca Moama and Barham Koondrook. You’ll be at ease and in awe all in the same breath. Those wide eyes, that galloping heart, and a smile so wide — it’s all here waiting for you.

Welcome to River Country where the best memories are made.

WELCOME TO COUNTRY

Welcome to Yorta Yorta, Wamba Wamba and Barapa Barapa country. River Country acknowledges the traditional owners and custodians on whose land we live, work and explore, and their rich culture and spiritual connection to country.

We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging, acknowledge their stories, and celebrate their living culture and unique role in the life of our region.

Water Adventures

Our stunning stretch of Riverina heartland, bordered on the south by the Murray River, features native bush landscapes, thriving rivers and lush backwaters. Our riverside home is an aquatic wonderland that attracts kayakers, swimmers, birdwatchers, bushwalkers, boating enthusiasts and anyone looking to cast a line.

BOATING AND FISHING

River Country is home to five beautiful rivers — the Murray, Edward, Wakool, Niemur and Murrumbidgee — and boasts some of the best inland fishing you’ll find anywhere in Australia.

The region’s natural waterways are a fertile breeding ground for native fish species including the Murray Cod, golden perch (yellowbelly), trout cod, silver perch, bony bream, blackfish, redfin, goldfish, flat-headed gudgeon, Australian smelt, southern pygmy perch, Murray hardyhead, oriental weatherloach, mosquitofish, freshwater shrimps, yabbies and more.

Boat ramps are plentiful around these parts, but if fishing off the bank is more your style, you’ll find an abundance of secluded spots along the river’s edge to throw in a rod.

If you prefer nature gazing over fish catching, the natural environment lends itself perfectly to that too. There’s no better place for daydreaming and relaxing than in a tinny on the water, or perched under a gum tree on the riverbank as the world floats right on by.

For more information on fishing pick up a copy of our Fishing in River Country brochure.

CANOEING

Our still waters deliver the perfect antidote to today’s fast-paced life, offering a peaceful setting to escape civilsation and take a mindful pause.

The Edward River Canoe & Kayak Trail winds through both Murray Valley National and Regional Parks with 61km of paddling trails, as well as opportunities for camping, picnics and swimming. The Edward River Bridge picnic area is an ideal starting point to explore this unique river system and has a wheelchair-accessible kayak launch.

The Murray River Canoe Trails in the Murray Valley National Park and the Barmah National Park are also a paddler’s delight, all providing easy water access and a front row seat to some of the most spectacular wetlands and birdlife in the country. You’ll find canoes available for hire in Echuca Moama and Deniliquin.

If you’re looking for an easy space to kayak, Moulamein Lake is perfect with Aqua Yaks available to hire at the nearby caravan park.

STAND-UP PADDLE BOARDING (SUP)

Standup paddling is fast becoming the ultimate water adventure here in River Country, offering a truly unique perspective for exploring our local river systems and wetlands.

You won’t find a more relaxing setup than being out on the river surrounded by nature, water lapping at your board as you glide downstream to the rhythmic stroke of your paddle.

Nothing beats a sunrise or sunset SUP — it’s hands down one of the best ways to view our iconic rivers and picturesque bushland and the very best way to release the stresses of everyday life.

You’ll find plenty of hire options across the region, as well as guided SUP tours which are the best way to discover the many secret gems hidden beyond the riverbank.

WATER SKIING

The wide, protected waters of the Murray at Moama and at Picnic Point near Mathoura offer the perfect conditions for water skiing, wakeboarding, kneeboarding and barefooting.

Moulamein Lake is also a local favorite for water skiers.

Whether you are an absolute beginner, or a seasoned expert, this is a fun and active way to spend time on the water. You can also grab some lessons from the experts to really make the most of your water ski experience!

And if you love fast, loud boats, don’t miss the region’s pro waterskiing event, the Southern 80 in February each year, which draws thousands of visitors to the river’s edge for a full weekend of heart-thumping, ski racing action.

MURRAY VALLEY NATIONAL AND REGIONAL PARKS

With ancient forests of River Red Gums, waterways teeming with birdlife, and outdoor activities like kayaking, cycling, fishing and bird watching, these national and regional parks serve up all you would expect from a park experience. More than just natural beauty, with nods to our recent history of forestry and grazing, this is an outdoor history lesson you will not want to miss.

Murray Valley National and Regional Parks are in multiple precincts along the Murray River and Edward River. A solid fuel fire ban applies between 1 October and 31 March each year.

Bookings for camping are required. nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/camping
