Eagle keeps its eyes peeled for prey from its treetop nest, a Kingfisher rests on a branch, a group of Pelicans chat in the reeds, a Tern balances delicately on a lilypad, or an Osprey takes off with its catch. While you can birdwatch on any lakeshore, some of the best spots are Muriel Lake, Moose Lake Provincial Park, Franchere Bay, Pelican Point, and Wolf Lake recreation areas as they offer excellent boreal forest and wetland habitats.

Be sure to add Ethel Lake to your list as it is one of Alberta’s most reliable count areas for the Yellow Rail and Sedge Wren. Cold Lake is an entry point for neotropical migratory birds such as Wood Warblers. In late May and early June, Cold Lake Provincial Park is the destination for birders looking for the possibility of spotting up to 23 Warbler species. The fall migration draws a repeat crowd. Cold Lake has one of Alberta’s largest Western Grebe colonies, and a spill-over population of Pelicans, Cormorants and Gull species. All photos on these pages are taken at Wolf Lake by Norm Dyrvik

There are just under 300 species of birds that can be found in our region. Early mornings are the best time to spot local birds of the Lakeland.

AERIAL ADVENTURE PARK The Kinosoo Ridge Aerial Adventure Park is here to take you to new heights — literally. Standing 60 feet tall, this exhilarating addition to the Ridge makes sure you can have fun at the resort year-round! The features of the towering structure pick up elements that are unique to our region — from the legend of the Kinosoo to the oil and gas and agriculture industries. There are several skill levels to choose from to get to the top. On the ground, enjoy the fully accessible features while basking in the lush green surroundings of the boreal forest. Want to take a shortcut? Head to the stairs to go straight to the top and get the best view of Cold Lake going. After you work up an appetite, stop by the Kinosoo Kitchen for a bite. From delicious burgers to fresh salads, there’s something for everyone’s pallet. Grab a campsite at the M.D.’s French Bay Park to make for a short commute. Tentative opening is set for May long weekend, 2022. Keep an eye on kinosoo.ca or the Ridge’s Facebook or Instagram platforms for updates.

4-WHEELING Explore our boreal forests in a whole different way – on the back of a machine that will get you through some of the toughest terrain. Our region offers an unlimited number of backcountry and cutline trails or you can master our groomed and established tracks. Bring your own ATV for some lengthy ATV riding. The 300-kilometre multi-use Iron Horse Trail connects many of the area’s natural attractions. The Beaver River Trestle, at one kilometre long and 60 metres high, is one of the highlights of

Riders can use the Iron Horse Trail to access countless kilometres of backcountry trails and cutlines that weave through the region’s more rugged terrain. The Iron Horse Trail has various entry points and branches in three directions from Mile Zero at Abilene Junction. To the northeast is Glendon and Bonnyville, to the west is Smoky Lake and Waskatenau, and to the southeast lies St. Paul, Elk Point and Heinsburg. www.ironhorsetrail.ca facebook.com/AlbertasIronHorseTrail There are well-used trails located north of Crane Lake, and the May Lake Trail is northwest of Cold Lake. Cutline trails can be found around Wolf Lake that join up to the trails in Lakeland Provincial Park.

Museums

COLD LAKE MUSEUMS The beauty, vastness, and abundant resources of the Cold Lake region have drawn a variety of people and businesses to Cold Lake for years. The Cold Lake Museums tell the stories of their adventures. There are four sectors in the building – the Cold Lake Air Force Museum, the Oil & Gas Museum, the Aboriginal Museum, and the Heritage Museum. The accredited Air Force Museum paints a picture of 4 Wing and its squadrons and units from 1954 to present. Stay tuned for an interesting new exhibit coming this year about the Cruise Missile that was tested here during the 1980s. The Oil & Gas Museum shows the unique technology developed specifically for the Cold Lake Oil Sands through interactive exhibits. In the Aboriginal Museum, you can learn about the history of the Dene Suline, Cree Nations, and Métis peoples living on the shores of Cold Lake – with new features to come in 2022. The Heritage Museum

Located at 4401-54 Avenue Facebook.com/bonnyvillemuseum www.bonnyvillemuseum.ca 780-826-4925

contains the artifacts and storyline of the first Europeans arriving in Cold Lake at the end of the 18th century. For those that don’t know, before the air force and oil, Cold Lake was a land of farmers, fishermen, fur trappers, and loggers who came west for new opportunities. The museum depicts their stories in various vignettes. A Radar Dome was added to the museum grounds, along with a small airpark, telling the story of Canadian Forces Cold Lake, and its role as part of the Pinetree Line.

BONNYVILLE & DISTRICT MUSEUM Learn about the history of the Bonnyville region through the impressive collection of artifacts at the Bonnyville & District Museum. The diversity of the region is depicted in fourteen buildings – a number of which are original structures moved to the three-acre property by volunteers. On site are three churches, an expansive hospital exhibit, the 1920s Vallee General Store, two quaint homesteader cabins, and a firehall replica. The museum houses a vast array of agricultural and industrial artifacts – some of which are housed in the blacksmith shop, early automotive garage, and restored tractor shed.

fully adorned with historic furnishings and artifacts, and is available for private bookings. A visit to the Bonnyville & District Museum isn’t complete without seeing the stunning collection of folk-art miniatures, made between 1930 and 1950 by local artisan Clementine Poitras. Snap a selfie in front of the seven-metre high, hand-carved statue of 18th century fur trader, Angus Shaw. The museum is open from May to August. Visit their website or Facebook page for hours and details. Admission fees range depending on age — Adult $5, Senior $3, Child $2, Family $10. Donations are gratefully accepted.

Splash ZONE

Take your water fight from the beach to one of our three splash parks — two in Cold Lake and one in Bonnyville. When the weather turns cool and rainy, head indoors for some pool fun.

From lake to land, there are no shortages of ways to keep cool at Kinosoo Beach in Cold Lake (1902-1st Avenue). Wait for the big SPLASH of water wheel bucket in the splash park, or enjoy three blocks of one of the best beaches in Canada. Looking for a thrill? Take a turn on the zip line, that drops you straight into the lake. Grab lunch or a snack at the concession located near the playground. It’s a bird, it’s a plane… it’s a splash park? Take a turn sitting on the propeller plane that is part of the splash park at 4 Wing Cold Lake, located behind the Col. J.J. Parr Sports Centre. Remember to look up as the real jets soar overhead. Bring a lunch and take shade in the picnic shelter or under the giant sunshade at the playground. Get a workout in at the outdoor gym by the sand volleyball court. With lots of room to run, you can cool down at the Bonnyville Splash Park (4100 Lakeshore Drive) featuring the iconic giant moose. Once you get tired of the water, a family cycle on the Jessie Lake Trail gives you a nice change of scenery.

Moving indoors, the Bonnyville Swimming Pool features a 25-metre main pool and a three-metre by five-metre teaching pool, hot tub, and sauna. Check the Town’s website
