4-WHEELING
Explore our boreal forests in a whole different way – on the back of a machine that will get you through some of the toughest terrain. Our region offers an unlimited number of backcountry and cutline trails or you can master our groomed and established tracks. Bring your own ATV for some lengthy ATV riding.
The 300-kilometre multi-use Iron Horse Trail connects many of the area’s natural attractions. The Beaver River Trestle, at one kilometre long and 60 metres high, is one of the highlights of the trail. New paving in the parking lot and along the trail to the trestle makes it accessible for everyone.
Artist’s rendering of Aerial Adventure Park Riders can use the Iron Horse Trail to access countless kilometres of backcountry trails and cutlines that weave through the region’s more rugged terrain. The Iron Horse Trail has various entry points and branches in three directions from Mile Zero at Abilene Junction. To the northeast is Glendon and Bonnyville, to the west is Smoky Lake and Waskatenau, and to the southeast lies St. Paul, Elk Point and Heinsburg. www.ironhorsetrail.ca facebook.com/AlbertasIronHorseTrail
There are well-used trails located north of Crane Lake, and the May Lake Trail is northwest of Cold Lake. Cutline trails can be found around Wolf Lake that join up to the trails in Lakeland Provincial Park.
BIKE & HIKE
From flat, paved trails to challenging terrain through nature, our regional biking and hiking trails offer a variety of experiences.
The Cold Lake Bike Park & Trails, which surround the Cold Lake Museums, has trails, a pump track, jump features, and more. The Park contains year-round, multiuser (non-motorized), single track, mountain bike trails for all skill levels. If you want to end your hike or bike trek with a dip in the lake, Cold Lake Provincial Park has an excellent trail system for hiking and mountain biking. The public beach area is one of best spots to access the water.
For a more urban setting, the 12-kilometre paved Millennium Trail takes you through the City of Cold Lake and into 4 Wing. The trail also connects to the Heritage Trail along the lakeshore. Grab an ice cream cone at the marina, or grab lunch at one of the restuarants close by.
In the Bonnyville area, take a leisurely stroll, long hike, or cycle through the M.D.’s Muriel Lake Park. The 13-kilometre trail system includes a path to the Lookout which offers the best view of the lake.
Moose Lake Provincial Park provides plenty of wildlife action on its six kilometres of trails. The tall pines are simply majestic.
Wildlife sightings are plentiful when you walk or ride along the 10-kilometre Wetlands Trail around Jessie Lake, which borders the Town of Bonnyville. You can now walk from the Town to Vezeau Beach via the connected trail, which leads you to the tunnel that takes you under Highway 28. Continue along the trail to Moose Lake, or take the branch of the trail that goes to the east to explore the paved North Shore Heights Trail. This section goes all the way north to the intersection with the multi-use Iron Horse Trail, ending at Hwy. 660.
