Project Objective Design a rehabilitation toy for children at the Kaurie Sue Hamilton School in Riverton, Utah. Children at the Kaurie Sue Hamilton School have a variety of different impairments including autism, rett syndrome, down syndrome and cerebral palsy.
5
Problem and Opportunity Statement
Contact with nature and outdoor activity plays an important role in developing children and leads to numerous benefits. For children with autism who benefit from sensory play, there are virtually no toys or systems in place that helps foster their relationship with nature. There is an opportunity to enhance children’s relationship with nature. Using sensory toys to explore natural materials and concepts about nature can encourage children to explore and understand their natural environment.

Research: Key Insights Interviews with physical therapist Hedi Lane, a site visit to Kaurie Sue Hamilton School and online research led to key insights.

Sensory Nature Blocks are wood building blocks with unique textures inspired by nature. They integrate sensory play, outdoor exploration and learning with imaginative play.
13
Design Considerations Facilitate Relationship with Nature and Outdoor Play Safety
The block textures are named after natural objects and occurrences which starts a dialogue about nature and introduces the child to outdoor exploration.
The blocks are finished with a safe and non-toxic formula of beeswax and jojoba oil and made out of a hardwood which wont splinter.
Sensory Exploration Each block has a different texture, allowing the child to encounter a variety of textures through play.
Durability The blocks are made out of beech wood which can endure tough play.
Natural Materials The three materials used are all natural: wood, beeswax, and jojoba oil.
Environmentally Conscious Wood, when sourced responsibly, leaves a smaller environmental footprint than alternative materials
14
Packaging On the Shelf When in stores, a tag with details about the product will hang from the bag.
Independence The canvas drawstring bag makes it easy for children to clean up with little to no assistance. Just toss the blocks in and pull the drawstrings to close.
