Problem There is not an easy way for tetrapalegic handcyclers to grip the pedals of a handcycle.
research Longitudinal Ethnography
This is Andy Dahmen, he suffered a spinal cord injury and is now tetrapalegic. My key observation with Andy is the extreme loss of independence that he experienced after his injury.
immersion
I rode a handcycle myself and realized that the bike allows tetrapalegic riders to regain their independence.
Precedent analysis
The two main competitors in this field are Quadgrips and Bike-on. The Bikeon system requires a level of dexterity that tetrapalegic riders don’t have, this destroys the independent aspect of the experience. Going forward I knew I needed to find a solution that would preserve this independence.
problem (restated)
Current pedal clip systems do not allow tetrapalegic handcyclers to use them independently.

Solution
The Velo Wrist Clip is better than existing solutions because, by wrapping around the hand, it allows a user with no grip strength to put it on independently.
